Non sammy based ROM gallery and MTP not working properly - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I normally use Sammy based ROMs like Neatrom or checkrom and i usually save pictures and .zips to my external sd.
However, when i switch to AOKP/AOSP roms, i noticed a couple of problems:
1) Gallery doesnt show pictures because my pics are in external sd
2) Stock Android camera doesnt have the option to save pics to sd card
3) external sd folder itself is empty.
4) The phone and sd card is viewed as an entertainment device when plugged into my laptop, as opposed to being the normal MTP usb drives. This means the files on my external sd card do not show up.
I think all these happen because my data in the sd card is not being mounted properly. Ive tried using remountSD apk and it does mount my external sd properly, which allows me to view my external SD using ES File explorer, which solves issue 3. However, it does not solve: 1) gallery still doesnt see my pics. 2) Android camera still cannot save to sd card. 4) Phone is still detected as entertainment device.
This is one of the biggest reason for me to not use AOKP/AOSP roms.
Any help or explanation of why these things happen would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Does anyone know anything about this at all?

What AOKP/AOSP are you using?
External SD issue
-Under ICS Aokp/aosp, your external SD card is mounted here: /mnt/emmc (use es file explorer to browse the root of your phone)
-under JB Aokp/aosp, your external SD card is mounted here: /storage/sdcard1
Gallery Issue
Visit this thread for solution
Android camera
-Android camera cannot save to SD is a known issue for AOSP camera app.
-If you are on ICS, download Camera ICS, which is the same Aosp camera app with all these functions you need eg SD card save. You can also try other alternatives.
-If you are on JB, download Camera JB+ which is the same JB camera with many more functions you are talking about. you can also try other alternatives.
Connection to Laptop
-entertainment device means your phone is connected as MTP instead of Mass storage mode (you got it wrong there)
-to connect in UMS mode instead of MTP, Go to Setting>Storage> press menu for options > Usb computer connections>select Mass storage
solved

Thanks Joke, you've helped me understand these issues alot!

[Q] Apps use internal storage as SD card, can not see actual SD card

New Atrix, unmodded. Tested on default storage setting set in either internal storage, or sd card.
16g sd card.
Card contains music, books and pictures.
File manager of the phone can see it and folders on it just fine, music player can see music files on it just fine.
Market bought music player( Power Amp) does not see SD card, it can only see internal storage as SD card.
Cool Reader- same- it thinks internal memory is SD card.
Neither can browse to the SD card.
Both apps worked with droid x and nexus s phones succesfuly before.
Apps that have ability to browse internal memory (tiny player and fbreader)- can go to /sdcard-ext/ and find files there.
Is there any way to make sure that apps, that are built to use SD card for their media would be able to see and use SD card, instead of "virtual" SD on the Internal Storage?
Thank You

Hi,
I had the same issue with a app called Slideshow Bob. I came from a Samsung Captivate and the file system was such that the external card was seen as a subdirectory of the internal card. I never had a problem with this arrangement in apps. However, the Atrix sees the external card as completely separate and some apps simply could not "see" the external card. My solution? I used a different slideshow app. Not exactly the ideal solution, but I had spent enough time trying to work around it. I don't know how other android devices have the external card arrangement, but this may be a bigger issue than we'd like until app developers change their apps or Motorola decides to change it's storage arrangement. Hope this helps.
Thank you for your answer,
using different apps is a work around.
I used different one- moved my content to the internal storage.
Both work.
What I realy would like to see is - those apps work as intended, the way they do work in most android phones from Droid to Nexus S.

Has anyone tried to replace the Music folder on internal storage with a symbolic link to the Music folder on external? Not sure if Android supports symbolics or not...
Should have known it would'nt be this easy. Tried it on existing SD and found that symbolic links are not supported on FATx. Reformatted my SD to EXT3/2 and booted back up. I get a SD format not recognized error.

Unable to see SD card as USB while using AOKP ICS

I'm currently using the Hydrogen ICS ROM, but whenever I hook my phone up to my PC using USB, only the phone internal storage shows up, and I can't view or access the SD card storage through the PC.
When I was still on a Gingerbread ROM, I was able to see both of them as separate partitions.
What's the reason for the change, and is there a way to work around it?
This is a answer i found in the resurrection rom, many thanks to Ibsonic
01) Download "Android Terminal Emulator" from google play
02) Open app
03) Type these commando's (press enter after each line)
su
setprop persist.sys.usb.config mtp
reboot
and you will have MTP with sdcard again, be patient, the drivers will load and install automatically
Had the same problem as you described. You can give it a try
Again thanks Ibsonic

i'm not sure weather this will work, but i once encounter issue where CWM won't read my external SD card, after going through all the trouble, i found that a quick format for the SD card in "setting->Storage->Erase SD card" does the job.
Do make a backup of your SD card content.

[Q] Internal SD damaged - How to rescue? How to fix?

Suddenly I get this error in the notification bar:
Damaged SD Card - SD card is damaged. Try reformatting it.
And the SD card is not mounted. It's the internal one, the USB storage one I guess.
My external SD card works fine and is being mounted.
This is a huge problems since a lot of apps doesn't work when there is no internal SD. Swiftkey can't find it's languange packs, Gallery and many other video/image apps also fail etc.
If I reboot to recovery and to install zip from sdcard, I can see both my internal and external sd card. So recovery seem to be able to mount the internal sd, but android itself does not.
Now, I could format it, but I would like to at least be able to back up before I do, which is a bit of a problem since can't take the card out and use in a card reader and I can't get android to mount and share it either, even though recovery is able to mount the card just fine.
1) Does anybody know why this has happened?
2) Does anybody know how I can backup the contents of the internal sd, even if I can't get android to mount it?
3) Does anybody know how I any other way of fixing this problem?
Thanks in advance!
Rom & Kernel plz? :silly:
Also, Not really sure about this but I have a far reminiscence of having read somewhere that you can actually access your folders through USB from CWM once they are mounted. Please someone confirm this because I may be speaking bull****; otherwise you could try to backup your data from your very same computer.

Flash latest Siyah kernel (if you're on ICS/JB) and then boot to CWM. In mounts&storage mount USB storage and connect pc and phone via usb.

[Q]Mass Storage only external SDCard

Hi,
I'd like to know if there is any way of selecting mass storage mode only for external sd_card. When I conect to a PC or any other device, if I select mass storage mode, both internal and external storage connects, but I would like to connect only external one (the sd_card itself). Is that possible?
Just for the record, I'm using CM9 now, but I haven't found this option on any of the roms I've tested.
Thank you.
Just remove the sdcard from microSD slot and insert it to card reader ._.

I'm sorry, maybe I didn't explained it correctly... Of course, this is a way to access the sdcard, and I know there are some other solutions, but it's not what I was asking. I don't want to remove the battery cover each time I want to access the sdcard. I don't want to wear with me a card reader always...
There are some cases in which I'd like to use this feature. For example, my car stereo has an USB port. In case I connect the SGS2, both storage units connects to the stereo, but it only detects one of them, in this case, the first one (internal Storage). This has 2 problems, the first one is that I use the external sdcard for music storage, and the second one is that some applications that stores data in the internal sdcard stops working.
I know there are many other ways of doing things (using a usb drive, removing sdcard...) but I just wanted to know if selecting only external storage was possible.
Thank you.
I`m interested into this too...
Phone forgets ringtones selection when they are stored on internal card after card disconnected from PC

Access SD-Card (formatted as internal storage) via USB or Filebrowser App?

Hi P9000 users!
I had now time to test some stuff with my P9000. One question: I inserted a Sandisk 128 GB SDXC Card (UHS) and formatted as internal Storage (want to move apps). Worked fine for the Phone and i was able to move apps to the SD. But after connecting Phone to USB (via MTP & unlocked phone) it only shows 32 GB internal SD. Also via File Explorer app on the phone i cannot find the external SD or mountpoint....
Anyone with same issue? I also changed connection-type to USB and then my OS (Win 10) does not open phone file system at all.
thx and br

We did an article about the SD card memory management in Marshmallow a while ago on the XDA portal that explains this, I'd suggest googling for it as I can't remember the title.
Edit: Something to do with the SD card being formatted as Ext4 (linux file system standard these days) and Windows not supporting Ext4 filesystems.
Thx for reply, so i am afraid its related to Android 6 default behaviour. So if SD is formatted as internal storage you cannot access via USB from PC or managing files on it via file browser app? Thats really disappointing for me since it then switches SD card to enhanced app storage only, useless for image, videos, music etc. Of course i can format as portable SD, but then no movement of apps are possible (via root its maybe the only option).
In SD portable mode, i also had issue that SD cards randomly disconnects and one time it even needed to be reformatted. Have read about that in another thread, that this is related to physical sd mount... will see to fix this with some tape :/ (gives me not a good feeling here)

Update: checked some forums and blogs, seems not to be android 6 default behavior that you completely cannot access the files on adopted SD-card anymore. after adopting as internal storage... anyone could also reproduce this? I will try doing factory reset with SD-Card inserted..
