S3 - suddenly Mobile network not available - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a Samsung S3 GT 19300.
Purchased in Hong Kong. Using China Unicom, and I have a monthly plan, fully paid up.
It is stock - I have not rooted it.
Suddenly, about 3 days ago, I started having problems with it connecting to the network. I ignored this issues because I was on vacation, and roaming ... so I thought it was due to the roaming.
I'm back home now, and I can not make any calls.
When I call out, the phone:
- sometimes doesn't connect to the network - the call doesn't go through at all
- sometimes dials the other end, but there is no sound between the two phones. When that happens, the phone connection lasts about 15 seconds, and then the Samsung phone shows the network as not available, with the circle with a slash through it, and says "Mobile
network not available".
I've rebooted many times.
I've took out the SIM card, and put it back in.
I've checked the firmware - and the firmware is current.
I've disabled JuiceDefender Ultimate
Strangely, I CAN send data thru the network, but can not receive or make calls.
I also found out that WHILE I CAN SEND / RECEIVE data (internet), FourSquare can not identify where I am...
Suggestions?

actually it seems like a problem with your network\sim card.
i'd try first to ask other users under the same network if they experience problem and replace the sim card

Backup Data factory reset ..
Try with a different sim card are the usual first steps .

I forgot to update my post.
I used a friend's SIM - which is on the same network (China Unicom) as my SIM card is ...
I had the exact same problems.

One of my friends tells me I should re-install a ROM ... What do you think?
QUESTIONS:
Should I try to root the phone?
I ask because (a) it's not yet
(b) I want to back it up, and understand Titanium Backup to be the best ... but that needs to be rooted.
FINALLY - how woulld you back it up? I hate losing data.
I have a huge DROPBOX account ... but don't see a great way to use that to back it up.
Thanks.

i've a similar problem but with sms..

If it's within guarantee then just take it back to the store. Sounds defective and rooting would void your warranty on a faulty device. You'd probably find that rooting and a custom rom would not help anyways.
My $0.02 is take it back to the store, but back up your setting to Samsung drive thing. It backs up message too.

[Q] Voice Mail icon

So after upgrading to ICS I have a voice mail icon on my notification bar. This is a data only device for me with no access to voice mail does anybody have an way to clear the icon?
Kirby
Ditto! Had it since first upgrading myself. Just figured out you can slide notifications away after pulling em all up, but sadly that one won't budge.
It's not a big problem, but does get rather annoying.
Has anyone tried removing the phone apks?

This does remove the notification but borks the entire system. No cellular reception at all if you remove the phone.apk and .odex.
similar issue here
I got my Mediapad 2 weeks ago and had to get a new TMO SIM to make calls (old SIM refused to connect to network). I have had the new voicemail icon ever since and I have not upgraded or rooted anything. I'm looking forward to getting a clue on this mystery!

The typical way to get rid of this is to call yourself and leave a voicemail then delete that voicemail. I've had this problem on Android devices in general on the last few iterations of the OS. The problem with the Mediapad is that most of us have a data only plan on our tablets.
I had a similar problem when I asked T-Mo to disable voicemail on my prepaid SIM. Ever since, any device I plug the SIM into remains convinced that there's a new voicemail. This has remained the case for 1.5 years now. Perhaps this is an overall problem with their provisioning of accounts that don't have voice/voicemail.

So getting a new SIM could possibly resolve the issue.

I doubt it. For an unrelated reason I had to do a SIM swap on one of my trips to the USA, and the VM icon problem persisted through to the new SIM.
I think it's an issue in the way the accounts are provisioned. And T-Mobile hasn't managed to figure out a solution because I tried with them several times.
Come on guys simple solution.go to settings->apps->look for phone app and clear data/cache if this doesnt work do the same to the dialer app. This only clears that pesky voicemail notifacation.doesnt clear voicemail inbox

For me at least this won't work because I have neither a phone app or a dialer app. Nothing to clear, I personally think this is a provisioning issue that T-Mobile needs to deal with.

That's the only way I know how to remove the voicemail icon. Can your device use the wifi calling feature? Maybe then you can do what the quote says...
FOUND IT!
I have a T-Mobile Springboard running ICS as well. I went to settings->apps->Mobile Data... and hit Clear Data. It should immediately get rid of the stupid VM icon and I still have access to the mobile data.

I'll have to try that when I get home. I meant to bring my tablet with me this morning but was running late. If this works, thanks for the tip!

I don't have any option to clear data so unless I'm missing something this isn't option for me.

Rkwhyte,
It is found in Settings->Applications->All apps->Mobile Data
from there select Clear data and BOOM the voicemail icon goes away. Don't touch mobile network configuration though.

The only problem I see though is if I turn the device completely on then turn it on again the VMail icon appears again. But that's okay. At least I know how to clear it when I'm working on my tablet so that I don't accidentally touch it again (which I've done many times).
I have the same issue with my tablet plan :crying:

HELP NEEDED!!! Cant send or recive calls!? PLEASE HELP!!!...

EDIT: Just tried a 3 sim card and it worked so I will get another T-Mobile Sim to see if the problem is a didgy sim card...strage as the sim works when I put it in a micro sim to sim adapter in another phone!?
Im in the UK, with T-Mobile and randomly cant send/recieve calls or texts
I called T-Mobile and they refreshed the network settings but I still cant call...they said it wasnt anything to do with network coverage as it was displaying i had signal, but in call settings > additional settings or call forwarding > voice call:
it says "Network or Sim error"
my sim works in another phone too so its not a dodgy sim...so it is 100% down to the phone that I cannot call or recieve calls or texts so not just call settings being messed up, problem surfaced 2 hours after flashing Foxhound 0.3 (but in those 2 hour calls/texts were working)
I have done hard reset, and facory reset, restored a backup...also flashed stock XXLF2, and also LF8 but all with no luck
My IMEI number is displayed in about phone, it is displaying full signal, and T-Mobile in the dropdown menu and im able to use my mobile data from T-Mobile so what is wrong, and how can I fix this?
Would be forever grateful to whoever can help me out...even if your not sure any ideas are welcome as my £500 phone is as good as bricked to me!
I will take it into T-Mobile to see if they will replace the handset under warranty but how do I go about making it seem it hasnt been rooted or flashed custom ROM, I know I need Triangle away but what order etc?
Thanks allot
Remove root apps .
Run Triangle Away
Flash original stock rom .
Check rom counter .

"unknown" phone number on settings

Hi Guys,
I am new on SG2. I'm using stock rom, ICS 4.0.3 and I found out that my phone number in Settings is "unknown".
I noticed this problem since I bought it on store but I didn't ask the store staff why this thing happen.
Can anyone give me an advice what's wrong on my phone? TIA. :fingers-crossed:
you didnt flash or root etc ?
can you receive calls and does it connect to your provider ?
I've NEVER had my phone number appear there since day one from the first stock, unrooted Gingerbread ROM out of the box. It's never really bothered me. I think it has more to do with the way your provider's SIM interacts with the device than anything else.

I just change my kernel version to speedmod but this problem happened since the day I bought my S2 on store.
Yes, I received calls, messages and signals from my provider.
What do you think is the problem?
phone number got stored on your SIM, if you didn't got one from your carrier, just flash cm9 and from dialer settings add your phone number. After that it will show on every Rom every phone, until you change your SIM.
Yep Atifsh is right. Either flash CM9, change it/add it (dialer/settings/additional settings/my phone number), then go back to whatever rom you were using if you want. Or....get an older dumb phone which has the ability to edit your phone number/save it on the sim; put sim in dumb phone, add/edit number, put sim back in SGS2. Profit.
Thanks guys. Can you give me a link to the best CM9 Rom I will use? TIA

not registered to network after turning off the flight mode or signal loss

My unit says 'not registered to network' whenever i make a call but i can use the internet provided by my sim. This happens wheneve i access the flight mode and after turning it off i cant make any calls or texts.. but i have a strong signal and can use the net. I bought this already to samsung service ctr and they said that they changed the board. But the problem is still there. When i use my sim to other phone it works fine. And whenever i put it back to my s3, everything seems to be normal because i can make calls and texts already. Just dont access the flight mode.. havent tried if the problem will activate if i have a complete signal loss. Anyone one there with the same case? Pls help me with this one..

My Xperia Z2 suddenly cannot make or receive calls unless i'm on GSM

Hey Guys,
Desperate lurker here saying First of all thanks for all the guides and everything that the devs and everyone that the community has done. I've search all of google and xda but i can't seem to figure out what's wrong with me Xperia Z2 .D6503
. T mobile carrier.
Basically since yesterday, I noticed that my phone couldn't receive or make any phone calls. but data internet, wifi internet and text messaging was working fine. Whenever people call me, i would just get a voicemail notice. At the time I was on the Marshmallow Existence rom. Ive done a lot of troubleshooting since then and still I can only make a call on GSM Mode.
Here's what i've done.
Wiped data and "reset" my phone on the Existence ROM - didn't work.
Wiped everything and flash Resurrection ROM - didn't work still.
Used someone else's sim card , couldn't receive calls either.
Use my sim card on a different phone - that one worked (SO IT'S NOT THE SIM CARD'S FAULT)
Placed back my sim card in the Z2 and reset flashed the stock rom from this page https://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z2/general/stock-t3355768
but that didn't work either.
I've also manually put the Tmobile APN.
Basically calls only work when changing it into GSM mode. but when i put LTE/WCDMA/GSM. Calls made under LTE/WCDMA/GSM Won't even make a dialtone when I make a cal. It basically just ends after a few seconds
I'm starting to think it might be a hardware issue because no matter which ROM i put, no matter how many factory resets and data wipes i've done. I can only make calls on GSM Mode.
Does anyone have any other ideas or should I just cry and buy a new phone.?
I suggest you to flash your phone with flashtool v0.9.18.6 and flash 291 ftf and wipe all
@whatsadophone
Have you try resetting APN for your SIM card when on your device?
thanks to everyone who tried to help. I don't know what happened. but after i tried putting the sim back in the Z2 to check my signals using Signal Spy, It suddenly can use LTE again. Only problem is since i installed that stock ROM, I lost my recovery mode and can't get it back. But i wont push my luck and just keep it like it is till i buy a new phone.
