Restoring CWM backup - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have never been able to restore backups made with CWM.
Every-time it says something about boot.img not found.
It doesnt mather if I go from stock to aosp, from cm9 to cm10, from stock to cm10.
On internet Ive found that the cause is because of incompatipable CWM versions but an backup made with Siyah kernel can not be restored by Siyah kernel.
I find it hard to believe I am the only one with this problem.
Thanks in advanced!

Well, only different Cwm versions cross my mind as I have been able to restore backups several times. But every time before restoring, as a matter of precaution I flashed the kernel that backup was made with (e.g. Siyah 3.3.1.).

Nandroid Restore Question

Am I able to nandroid restore from MIUI to something with voodoo and vice versa?
I believe you have to odin back to stock first.
the restores are done from CWM so i think yes?
nandroid doesnt back-up the kernel i dont think so you need to flash a kernel thats compatible with whatever rom you backed-up or i think it'll bootloop
using nandroid to go between different CM7/MIUI roms will work (for the most part, as CWM will actually backup the kernel for those). However, you can't use nandroid to go between CM7/MIUI and samsung roms.

[Q] How to get nandroid backup working on newer roms

Hi
I'm having issues with doing a nandroid backup and restore using current stock roms such as KI3.
I read the boot loader changed here compared to older roms, but I'm not sure that this alone is the issue.
What I did is install a frakenstein stock rom, meaning the whole rom was put together from seperate parts of different versions from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278:
This Frankenstein™ Non-Wipe package has: PDA: XXKI3| Modem/phone: XXKI3| CSC: XEUKD1
Download: http://www.multiupload.com/7JTWS2E37R
Over this I installed the rooted rom from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399: CF-Root-SGS2_XX_OXA_KI3-42-v4.2-CWM4.zip
Just from the rom side of view, so using the phone with it everything was fine.
However now I did a nandroid backup and later a restore since I wanted to try Cyanogen mod 7.1
The restore itself ran through without errors, however I found that almost all .apk files of /data/app were missing, even google apps like gmail and market.
I heared CWM did not go well with the new boot loader so I tried running the restore after applying an older rom (first just the old boot loader) but this did not help.
I then found that the backup itself did not contain the missing apk files, so the backup process itself was not done properly.
To get to a working state again I had to extract the apk files from an older backup and collect the apks that were still missing manually.
After restoring again and then copying the apks using adb push I had the system working again.
Anyway:
It seemes to me that i had the original boot loader applied when doing the nandroid backup, but that was apparently not enough to get it running properly.
Can anyone help in creating a properly working nandroid backup from one of the newer stock roms like KI3 and KI8?
Thanx!

Standard method works CWM restore+ backup . Should know i have done ten backups and restores on KI3 today no problem

You mean so you do not have to use odin to flash a such roms?
I think you can make those yourself. Just do a factory reset, clear all caches and then use odin to flash the rom, and then apply root and go into cwm to create a backup.
You could share that backup with others.
Ofcourase that would not be entirely stock anymore since root and CWM would be included there.

Interesting - so no problems at all with CWM backup and restore based on a KI3 at all? Including custom settings and own apps installed?
Which rom exactly did you flash and how did you apply CWM?

Standard CWM backup/restore works for me too.
I used the same KI3 Frankenstein firmware as you (OP) but KI3-v4.1 of cf-root.
Thanx.
I installed the 4.1 kernel and also to be sure the old boot loader and made a CWM backup the data.img is now 259mb instead of just 100mb so I think now its a proper backup.
Now I can go ahead and properly try out CM 7.1

Nandroid restores Kernel?

Does a restore through recovery restore the Kernel or just the ROM and Modem?
I know they used to not restore the kernel but some have been saying that it does restore the kernel now.
Yes. The kernel will be restored along with everything else.
And doing so will not trip the flash counter.

Nandroid in CWM 5.x (the I777 has never had anything older) does restore kernel.
2.5.x (common on first-gen GalaxyS, especially the Voodoo-modified one) did not.

cannot make nandroid backup

Hi guys! After flashing siyah kernel 2.6.13 i cant finish a nandroid backup with the customized cwm. Does anyone have the same thing? Any ideas how to solve it?
When I run into troubles like this I've just put a kernel on that I knew did work, made the backup, and made sure that I had the desired kernel to flash back to after a restore, so basically I've substituted to get around this sort of thing.
It seems, though, that the kernels are getting more and more temperamental about which ones will flash each other by CWM recently. Siyah isnt as friendly anymore for whatever teason. Because of this I've been using mobile Odin and pulling the tar files out of CWM zips as this works regardless.
Enough space on the sdcard?

[Q] Recovery mode

Guys, currently I'm using DorimanX kernel. It has the latest CWM which is version 6. But I dislike CWM v6 because when I backup my ROM it will give out 2 folders that are backup and blobs. It is quite irritating to me because before this I copied the backed up ROM into my laptop and back to my phone but an error persisted, it said "MD5 mismatch". Thus, I would love to go back to CWM v5 without losing the DorimanX kernel, is that anyhow possible?
Thanks in advance.

There is no need to go back to an older CWM recovery version.
(You would have to flash a new kernel with the other CWM. Or flash a temporarily CWM just before using CWM recovery.)
Boot into CWM recovery, then select BackUp & Restore. There you can change the backup format from dup (incremental backup format with blobs) to tar (classic full backup).
Good luck !
