You cannot flash kernels in locked bootloader.. And most of the mods are also there for unlocked one.. Unlocked bootloader has very few Roms.. Better unlock it and experience a whole new world for your phone

There's no different in apps or mod.
But there's rom. Most rom here are build for unlock bootloader, u can overclock and stuff.
Pretty cool but u will lose DRM keys. So no more "download music info" in walkman. All apps that need DRM keys won't work,

Yes it is, and there are guides in this forums by DoomLord.
From my own experience, the only thing I miss is walkman's "download music info" which I don't consider important. If you are one of the "flashers" I suggest unlocking it

lock bootloader mean u can't flash any kernel and u just can flash stock based rom..unlock bootloader allowed u to flash any custom kernel that is compatible with any custom rom u want to flash..
Hit thanks if u understand what i'm explaining..:good:

This and other mentioned are RESULTS of difference but where is difference ITSELF ?
WHY cant I flash any kernel except stock ?
Don't tell me "because you go brick".
It is RESULT.
I can flash stock rom and it communicates with locked BL however - I think - new stock rom has it's own management of booting.
Then - base question is NOT explained and I am really curious of answer.

Locked bootloader means it can only boot sony signed kernel
NO CUSTOM KERNEL NO ALWAYS ROOT
Unlocked means it can boot any kernel made for that device
You can always have root and have custom kernels
You can also get CM and all new features
The rom for locked bootloader can work in unlocked but vice versa is dangerous

NO, bravia won't work and this is the only thing i miss from locked bootloader.
As far as i know DRM stand for Digital rights management, so you can't download music info anymore. But there are many modded walkman apps can do that.

Yes. That I did, on older stock ROM, ST26i_11.0.A.3.28_WE. Lost root after upgrade to latest.
Downgraded, prefer have root than latest ROM however speed is about 15% higher on new ROM, must be better kernel and libraries.

why would u want to downgrade? u can have root access on every ROM even if your bootloader is locked.
So for unlocked bootloader just flash a custom kernel with "autoroot" function. Once u flashed that kernel, u will have root access after reboot.
For both locked and unlocked bootloader this tool from b1nary should also work...

As the name suggests LOCKED BOOTLOADER means the bootloader is locked and cant be accessed, so you can't install custom kernels as it is locked with the kernel by Sony itself......yes you will lose your DRM keys, you cant use trackid and the download music info which are somewhat pretty useless for me........those were such small sacrifices so you can access the vast open world of modding your phone.....hppe that helps.

nopes, DRM is on the kernel, when you unlock your bootloaded DRM keys will be erase. You can't never ever get it back !! :cyclops:, but DRM keys are not necessary for me actually

I think album art downloading in Walkman is the only thing that breaks.
Seems that the location button on the messaging menu also doesn't work.
"I got my values. So you can keep yours, OK?"
But what if we knew where they were, so somebody can extract those before unlocking the BL...? And then we can restore them?
If they're on the kernel, is there no way to remake the stock kernel with DRM keys??
Track id also does not work
Who bothers we can download it from Google play again
If drm keys are on kernel.. Can a copy of stock kernel be made to preserve those drm keys?
Sent from my ST25i using Tapatalk 2
Not on kernel I think...
Because update also contains a new kernel...
One more thing, Search option in geotag of album app is also not working...

But an official Sony update wouldn't delete official Sony data! So what if DRM keys are in BOTH kernels?
Also, how can we make a copy of the kernel? I'd do it, if I only knew how...

He meant with unlocked bootloader. Still, strange, works for me even unlocked.
"What really matters in this world, anyway?"
TrackID works even with unlocked BL, what is not working since drm keys are gone it's the "download music info" that is another thing!
Its already gone so no use!

Have you searched?
Has told you must root and install cwm.
Without being very rigorous you have, working in locked bootloader:
MIUI
DualCore
Xtream
The first one has a completely new interface. The other 2 are based on original Sony Rom and then tunned for less trash and better performance.
Hope it helps... but search first

Are you sure about this ?
KA SSpeed is based on a tweaked Kernel... and with Locked BL you simply can't flash Kernels.
For the 3 I stated I can confirm they work on locked BL, for KA I wait for some feedback.
I can tell you that KA-rom doesn't work with locked bootloader, isn't designed for stock kernel I guess. I almost bricked my phone but luckily I could run Sony Update Service to restore it. Miui is a good choice for us with locked bootloaders but I personally don't like miui that much.
I'm a bit afraid of trying any more roms until there is a way to unlock the bootloader for us that officially can't. Most good roms need a custom kernel anyways.
But I do wan't something more compact, and with the look of AOSP. Maybe I'll try Xtream or DualCore, if it works well with locked bootloaders that is...

I use KA on locked bootloader and so far no problems. You just need cwm to make it work, and we all know you can install cwm even with stock kernel
Flinux,
With locked bootloader you have to make big sh#t to brick phone.
Unless it specifies on Rom information you have to edit updater-script file to flash into locked boot.
You can try dualcore, has it probably is the most light Rom, personally I use MIUI because it is the most configurable Rom available for xsx and has updates every week. Maybe a bit more heavy in memory... but my phone runs a full day with all roms, so no questions there.
If you need a Rom confirmed in locked bl I can share my modded zip for last miui version.

I said "almost"... but it wasn't a "brick" per say, just a stupid boot loop, and I lost CWM so I couldn't go into recovery to reflash. But as I said, I solved it by reflashing original with SUS. I have used KA-roms before on my Xperia neo, but I didn't get it to work with my Xperia S.
Anyways, I think I will try dualcore, since I don't care much for the sony launcher anyways. It seems like a pretty light and batteryfriendly rom. (too bad dualcore has stopped developing this rom...)
Great... another dev leaving xps...
My Huawei x5 had more devs and more roms available... and no locked bootloaders or flashboot locked modes.
Xps is an amazing phone, but for modding and development.. it sucks
I can't find other explanation...

As much as I understand ur ques u wanna ask that "if u unlock ur bl...flash custom rom(not all need unlocked bl though)..go back to stock, then will all ur apps work?"
Firstly a recommendation from my side is to use the SEARCH button and google
And to answer ur ques...if u unlock ur phone via official method or with se bootloader unlocking tool, u will lose ur drm keys which u can't ever get back unless u have backed up ur ta(trim area). Though I guess nobody has tried the ta part for his device as it's really dangerous process..any step u do wrong and ull end up with a hard bricked device since ur ta will be damaged...an easy way to unlock while retaining ur drm keys is test point method but the condition is that ur device should 12w11 or earlier manufactured as sony doesn't allow the test point method in newer models after 12w11. Hope this help still I recommend u to use search. U can get all this info by reading and searching

[Q] I need a lot of advice... thanks for looking

Hi people. This is my 3rd android device. Two samsung products, and now the Z ultra.
So I have no idea what people are talking about... I'm used to ODIN... so is flashtool a similar piece of software?
My xperia Z hasn't arrived yet, Im just trying to get my head around sony and the way their devices are run..
So.. questions...
1. Backup your TA partition (I read that this has important info that I don't want to loose... Do i do this with flashtool? Do i also reflash this partition at a later date?)
2. Unlock your bootloader (Why are some people not unlocking bootloader... Do I understand correctly that some features will stop working... like x-reality?? If so, can't they just be reactivated with a custom ROM?)
3. I see there is a recovery for locked bootloaders... (can you still flash kernel's custom ROM's zips using CWM with a locked bootloader?)
Ive spent 3 days looking on the threads here, but I think because of my previous devices I have a preconceived idea of what i should be doing.. I'm confused.

Now everyone knows you're a n00b!
First of all, the minus of unlocking bootloader is losing your DRM keys. To do this, sony has provided us an official way through their website (just google it). Or you can do this via flashtool too. After unlocking, you will lose xreality engine and won't get FW update from sony anymore through official means (pcc or ota, but you can always flash). Some says trackID will be lost, too, but hey, who use it anyway?
The plus is, you entered godmode for flashing anything into your phone.
Unlocked bootloader can be relocked through flashtool, but relocked is not the same as locked, because xreality is still lost, cmiiw. To restore to original locked state, use backupTA (search thread in xda) BEFORE unlocking bootloader. And backupTA needs root, so we need root w/o unlock bootloader first (already plenty in other threads).
And yeah, what a maze this is.

Well it's harder to make, apparently. Currently even custom recovery for locked bootloader is not finished yet. Check the development section. And flashing things that normally isn't allowed on locked does have limitations, check in other xperia devices threads.

I am looking at getting the phone too. From what I understand is when your bootloader is locked, it will only load signed boot partitions. So any modification to the boot partition outside of the official stock kernel will not boot when locked. So installing any custom kernel (OC/UV/etc) with stock rom needs unlocked bootloader, or installing CM (which has it's own kernel anyway). So best is getting custom roms (only modified system) with stock kernel.
Also like already said, unlocked bootloader means no updates from Sony. I would backup TA at all costs anyway.
I doubt stock kernel supports kexec, but I guess you can hack the system init process to load different ramdisks. Which is why I guess they are having trouble with locked bootloaders with recovery ramdisks in the dev forum.
I am waiting for the C6806. Here are my plans:
1. Root using vroot (hope it doesn't infect TA with something ;o)
2. Backup TA Partition
3. Unlock
4. Deal with loss of DRM
5. Install whatever ROM/kernel for daily usage
6. (maybe make official TWRP)
7. Get official updates by restoring TA partition, stock kernel if necessary
or...
1. Root using vroot
2. Backup TA Paritition
3. Stick with stock kernel
4. Help with getting locked 2nd ramdisk working with stock init
5. Is the stock ROM awesome enough? (Not sure since we don't have 4.3 )
Also hoping info comes out about ATT bootloader soon on Note 3.
LTE phone is out by 9/25 I am thinking with US warranty support. (C6806)

Thanks for your thoughts biff...
I was also going to wait for the LTE version, however only two cities have it in my country, and I rarely travel to them, and the added price made be think again...
Thanks to all for their contributions on this thread especially op for having the balls to expose his new noob levels I'm coming from Samsung note and this has helped put things in perspective.

[Q] Custom ROM & security

Since large part of us might get their Z2s this week (hopefully including me :silly, I'd like to know what options we have to make our Xperias secure with soon-to-arrive custom ROMs.
From what I managed to find, the most convenient option (at least theoretically) would be to:
- unlock bootloader
- flash custom recovery
- flash custom ROM
- reflash stock recovery to prevent lockscreen bypass and adb access in general
- relock bootloader to prevent flashing custom recovery and regaining adb by potential attacker.
- then if needed, reflash recovery online if rooted, reflash new/updated ROM, reflash stock recovery back
Now, I've read that Xperia Z2 (other Zs probably as well) will softbrick with locked botloader and custom ROM/kernel, rendering this method useless. Am I right?
If yes, what other options do we have?
all i know for sure is its more complicated than samsung models n im gonna wait till there a way to root it without messing with the bootloader
-Unlock bootloader
-Flash kernel of the ROM you want (DooMKernel for stock based)
-Boot into the recovery that's baked into the kernel
-Flash the ROM you want
All AOSP ROM's require fastbooting the kernel from the zip (unless stated).

I cam from Samsung also, but really not difficult to unlock Bootloader at all actually.

So there is no way to block access to recovery after flashing custom ROM?
Also sorry for probably dumb question (I'm new to Xperias): do you maybe know if current recoveries baked into CM support encryption? I know there is no CM for Z2 yet, I'm asking about current Z series phones.

Well... On newer Xperia's (2012+) you can flash a recovery to the TArecovery partition, so you could remove it I suppose... But if the kernel you are using has a custom recovery baked in (they usually do on Xperia) then you could flash back the stock kernel, if you don't want recovery on stock based ROM. but as far as CM is concerned, you cannot remove recovery.
And yes all CM has recovery baked into Xperia kernels. We'll have official CM support from FXP team as soon as they receive their device too. Good times ahead

Its not so much the unlocking of the bootloader that bothers me, i reckon i could do that. Its more the effects of it, what gets lost, stops working properly etc

Not sure, thats why i aint doing nothing to it, apparently theres a folder that contains licence keys, which you will lose when you unlock bootloader. until i know a bit more about it, i aint messing with it

You lose the DRM keys. You can't keep the DRM keys if you root as of yet, because you have to unlock bootloader to root, and you can't do TA backup without root. Vicious circle.

What would I need the keys for? Sony sends the code to unlock the bootloader.
Music info, X-Reality engine stops working and so on...

That was the one, i knew it was something important. thats why im waiting till there a root without unlocking, i could probably manage without most of it, but i want the bravia engine working and any other screen or audio stuff it affects, altho i was wondering, could you not just redownload the stuff you want and in doing so aquire new keys?? or is it not that simple?
