Broken USB predicament - G Tablet Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hoping someone can answer me this. I have a broken USB miniport (Stood up too fast and yanked the cord hard enough to break connector off the mainboard). Fortunately I had a rom loaded and I was able to drop files on via USB stick or microSD or dropbox. My question now is, can I return to a stock ROM without NVFlash on the PC? If I created a backup from another tablet that was freshly loaded with stock/CWM could I simply restore it using CWM on the broken tablet?

Yes, it's possible, but, not advised because the stock ROM is not rooted, so you won't be able to fix things by using the command line utilities (to write partitions or to format, etc.) in case something goes wrong.
And, since recovery mode does not have networking enabled (it should be possible in CWM, though), you will need a working rooted ROM to do things without a working USB connection.
Additionally, going back to stock without nvflash (and without modifying the update.zip file) requires the recovery to be stock recovery and now CWM.
Why do you want to go back to the stock ROM anyway?

[Q] Unroot Tbolt with broken USB port

I have a rooted Tbolt and the platic surrounding the pins in the USB port has broken off. One of the pins bent so my computer won't recognize my phone when connected. Still charges if I plug in carefully, but no data connection. Verizon is sending out a warranty replacement but I'd like to return the phone to stock in case they power up the phone - don't want the fact that I rooted to void the warranty. Any suggestion on how I can return to stock unrooted? Have not installed a custom ROM or kernel at this point, just rooted using dbzfanatic's EasyRoot + S-off program.
Download this on your phone, put in on root of SD card, rename to PG05IMG and flash it from recovery menu.

Thanks for the reply. Quick question - if I reboot into recovery using CWM and select wipe data/factory reset, will this accomplish what I'm looking for? Will that have any effect on the backups on my SDcard? Sorry if these are n00b questions, but this is my first android device.
You don't need to boot into cwr, you can just boot into the default system recovery menu and flash the file directly from there.
Files on the sd card will not be effected.
Excellent. Thanks again for the prompt replies, yumms!
You may also be able to use Wireless ADB (on the market). Don't think you need it, but just in case - thought I would throw it in there.

you dont flash that file in the stock recovery either, its done from the bootloader.
If things get a little hairy, I suggest a +1 for ADB over Wireless.

[Q] Reset for warranty repair over wireless/adb?

I have a loose USB port on my phone, making it very hard to get a reliable connection between the phone and a PC. It still charges, although it's usually very slow to charge as well. Problem is, I've got CM7 and clockworkmod recovery running. I have a backup of my stock ROM which I could go back to, but I don't think that's sufficient for warranty repair. Is there a way to do the necessary ODIN/heimdall steps via WiFi (for flashing the stock image), or on the phone itself via a terminal emulator? If it's something that increments the flash counter, I have a jig that works if I apply pressure to it correctly (for now...again, loose USB port), so I can reset that back after. If I understand correctly, I basically just need a way to flash the stock recovery, and possibly flash the kernel back to unrooted, without USB.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

You should flash back to your stock ROM backup first. Then, go on the market and download mobile Odin pro. With this app, you can flash kernels and stuff. Then you should download the stock kernel, and flash it to bring your phone back to Stock.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777
for a little more detail see this thread.
Thanks to the both of you. I've managed to get everything back to stock, and migrated to a replacement device. All that's left is to stick the phone with a bum USB port in the mail.

[Q] just fu** up my tab trying to get ICS!

Tried getting a cyagen 9 ICS rom on my 3g wifi 10.1 tab, forgot to install the clockwork stuff, and now it wont work no more. Think i managed to delete everything on it!? Did manage to install clockwork after via odin but now it find no files on sd and nothing else will work. The sd card will not appear via usb on my pc so i cant put new files in!?
Is there any hope for it or is the garbage can next stop?
Magnar, Norway
Apparently you can see the device with odin - I'd recommend doing a full restock, you can follow the guide at the overcome experience: http://www.teamovercome.net/p7500/?page_id=5
Scroll down on that page until you see the "Re-“Stocking” Yer System…" part and follow the instructions there.
Once you do that your tab should be back in working condition and you'll be able to install CWM and a custom ROM with it. And another piece of advice - always (seriously, ALWAYS) do a nandroid backup of your system before flashing ROMs, especially if you aren't 100% sure what you need to do. This way, if something goes wrong, you can always just restore the backup and you're good to go.
Best of luck!
Why don't you just mount your tablet to you PC through - mounts and storage in CWM recovery? It should work. If not, do what the guy above me said.
jippi
Tried mounting usb but it did not work just got error. Tried the full restock and that did the trick. THANKS
That's why reading helps, It clearly says "Flash the zip using CWM" because modified files cannot be flashed by the stock recovery due to Googles restriction's to avoid breaking their EULA, so the work around would be using a personal made CWM. Problem is stock one is only meant to flash update.zip, to specific folder's, when you install a ROM via stock, it just dumps and replaces everything in one place, It's like getting all your 3 Science subject notes mixed in 1 notebook, you have no idea what is what.

[Q] Trouble with CWM loading anything

So, I bought a new Wifi Tab and finally convinced the wife that I wasnt going to destroy this thing by rooting it and trying custom ROMs. However, I am not having much luck with CWM. Here is what is going on.
I used Odin to flash CWM 5.0.2.7. Then I promptly made a nandroid. Then I rooted it and made a nandroid with it rooted, then I installed Titanium Backup and promptly backed up everything. Then I copied all of this to my PC before continuing. So I am pretty safe (I thought) unless I manage to spill my drink on it.
I then tried to flash the latest AOKP on it and it seemed to flash ok along with the gapps. However when I tried to boot it, all it would do was reboot into CWM. I tried power off, power on, the reboot within CWM, reflash (multiple times), all to no avail. All it would do is boot straight to CWM.
I figured no problem, I will just use Odin, restore to stock and restore my backup. So I restored to stock, reflashed CWM and put my backup back on my storage and it just fails with MD5 mismatch. I searched around and all I can find about the MD5 is not to rename the folder. I dont rename the folders, just copy them back and forth so thats out. Is there a way to disable this and would I want to?
My only guess is that my USB cable is at fault and somehow it is corrupting my files. It is not the stock cable, but a 3rd party I bought online because it was longer. I've used CWM on both my wife's and my phones with no problems. Does anybody have any suggestions on why anything I try to do with it fails?
Also, I havent done as much searching on this as I should have, but is there a way to just have the Tab mount a folder as a generic usb drive instead of this mtp crap? My skyrocket just mounts like a usb drive and I transfer files on and off with no problems, its quick and painless. This mtp stuff is just annoying.
So I am just updating this in case anybody else comes across the same issue. I suspect it was the cable I was using. I downloaded the zip files with the tablet instead of transferring them with USB and they seemed to flash better. I ended up removing the MD5 file from the CWM backup that was stored on my desktop to force CWM to restore it and it restored but it crashed about 30 seconds after booting up so I think something was corrupted. (Hence why the md5 didnt match). So I just restored to stock, re rooted and restored my apps with TiBu. I still am not running a custom rom as the wife insists she needs the camera even though she has yet to take one pic with it.

[Q] All ROMs and backups accidentally deleted. Please help!

I apologize if this has been covered elsewhere, but after an afternoon of searching and trying things, I think I need to just ask for advice, since I don't know what I'm doing.
I have a rooted Tab 10.1 wifi with TWRP installed, but somehow managed to delete all ROMs and backups from it, and there is no ROM installed. Was I drunk? Perhaps. I thought I was cleaning house, but clearly screwed up. So I can boot to TWRP or Odin mode, but there's no OS, so it can't actually boot to Android.
I thought I'd just stick a ROM on it and flash that, so I ordered a USB cable to connect to my PC, but no dice. Installed the Samsung USB drivers, and it shows up as an Android device in the Device Manager, but I can't mount it to get access to its storage and copy over a ROM.
Is it possible to mount the storage and copy over a ROM under these circumstances? Or do I have to use Odin or something like that? I haven't used Odin much, but I seem to remember it doesn't work the same way as just flashing a ROM, and I'd need some other firmware file. Any advice would be appreciated!

I think that the easiest way is to flash a stock rom with Odin and start over from there. It's a bit time consuming but it works.
