Doubt about stock recovery (3e) and CWM temp-images on GingerBread FW - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I am currently using a SGS2 I9100 with the stock rom (With a 2.3.5 Gingerbread FW) and I'd want to make a Nandroid copy before starting flashing stuff.
I've read about temporal CWM images (volume keys CWMv4 or touch CWM6) which temporall installs CWM as the recovery menu until you reboot the phone, that are nice to make nandroid backups or recovers.
But I've always seen them on thread about ICS, so I have a doubt: Are those CWM images compatible with all FW? either GB, ICS, JB; etc?
Thank you in advance.

CWM6 is compatible with all FWs. But better flash custom kernel that already has CWM.

Thanks for your reply!
So CMW6 (touch) would work.. but what about CMW4? I have readed that CMW5/6 may result in a hardbrick when using temporary CWM.. which didn't happen with CWM4.
Also, I discovered that I have the 0x19 HW chipbug.. is this safe to use anyway with any CWM version?

It's safe as long you don't use stock 4.0.4. kernel.

choose the correct 4.0.3 stock rom and flash the same thro Odin
Flash through odin. I doesn't matter whether it is Gingerbread or ICS.
But do not use CWM to wipe. You will brick it.
Good luck!

I flashed Siyah over the stock kernel. Would it be safe to wipe in CWM now (using 4.0.4, XXLQ6)

Can I upload from 4.0.3 (with cf-root) to 4.04?

Hi.
I have on my Galaxy S2 the stock ICS 4.0.3 (XWLP7) with CF-root kernel 5.4. I would like now to upload the phone with ICS 4.0.4 (XWLPU). Can I do it now like always with Odin or should I do first something else with my phone (wipe etc.)?
Thanks in advice
You can do it either way, I prefer doing it via CWM recovery.
To avoid BrickBug flash latest Siyah Kernel first (v4.1.2) before you do any wipe operations.
Then do a full wipe and flash desired rom.

dwnld the 4.0.4 firmware and flash the same using ODIN since ur upgrading from a stock rom to another one it will not be an issue, but after flashing 4.0.4 u have to re-root your phone, since stock XWLPU 4.0.4 will automatically unroot ur phone

You can just upgrade using Odin, no problem.
Note:
-once you upgrade to 4.0.4, then say goodbye to CF-ROOT kernel.
-Just flash a custom kernel like Siyah, speedmod, Dorimanx, Dream at once.
Why?
-Because stock ICS 4.0.4 kernel has a brick bug enabled on it.
-This bug is also present on all kernels based on stock 4.0.4 kernel. CF-ROOT and all insecure kernels fall into this category
What will happen?
-If after rooting your phone after upgrading to 4.0.4, and you wipe your phone or try ROM backup while running stock/stock based kernels then say goodbye to your phone.

Hi. Thanks for your answear. But I would like to know how should I do it, step by step. I have download it the Sizah kernel 4.12.
1. enter the CWM recovery mode and install the Siyah kernel (install ZIP from external card)
2. reboot the phone or?
3. enter CWM recovery mode again: hold down the volume up button, home button and power button.
4. in CWM recovery I have to choose the wipe data/factory reset
5. after wipe phone reboot
6. enter the Download mode and install the new ROM with Odin
Why should I install the siyah kernel? I still have the cf-root kernel (my phone is rooted).
After upload the new ICS 4.0.4 if I wanna root my phone, I should make the root with Siyah kernel via Odin or? Do you think the Siah kernel is better from CF-root kernel?
Thanks
I thought the brick bug has been taken care of in the latest CF kernels

that was not because of cf-root kernel's ma8 since they r tweaked stock kernel's with EMMC_cap (Brick Bug) removed , hence there would be no problem, as i have used one two days back to root a friends phone which was on stock 4.0.4 LPT firmware without any issues
the brick might be caused by the wrong CF-root being choosen like the one's marked with * that people might have dwnld'd without properly reading why it has been * rd.

I had the same feelings two until yesterday,
Two different guys, running Wanamlite LPU ICS 4.0.4 ROM with CF-ROOT kernel (the Rom's default kernel), hardbricked their phones after wiping data in recovery while trying to flash another ROM.

will 4.0.4 brake my device???!!

Hey there ^_^
first of all sorry for my English
I was want to ask about the ICS 4.0.4 for the i9100
Because somebody says that this rom may brake my device...
The problem that I have i9100g and upgraded for 4.0.4 but my friend have i9100 and I upgraded his mobile to 4.0.4 (the united kingdom rom)
so hhahahaha I would pay him if his mobile been broken later
Summary is the 4.0.4 for the i9100 will brake my device???????
Thanks ^_^
and sorry it's the first time I write a thread
It will brick your phone if you wipe data or restore nandroid backup through temporary CWM recovery, but only if you stay with 4.0.4 stock kernel (from Samsung).

If you friend doesn't ROOT his phone, he will never BRICK his phone.
However, if he wants to ROOT his phone or if his phone is already rooted, then he must flash a custom kernel e.g Siyah, speedmod, Dorimanx or dream kernel immediately

You can check if your EMMC chip can be bricked ('eMMC check' app from market) if it is known as INSANE, than it is highly possible to brick it.
But...
You will probably brick INSANE device when perform wipe in CWM recovery on stock 4.0.4 kernel.
If you use stock 3e recovery with stock kernel (even with root) or even CWM but with custom kernel with disabled CAP_ERASE function (all actual custom kernels I know) than your phone is safe.
If you are not sure:
1. Use stock firmware without any modyfications or
2. Use stock firmware with root only but stay with 3e recovery or
3. Use stock firmware with custom kernel (root and CWM included) - optimal sollution or
4. Use custom rom with custom kernel included (I'm still not sure about CF-Root kernel becouse it is almost stock kernel, I don't know there is cap_erase disabled or not - in case you want to use it with CWM) or
5. Use 4.0.3 with... anything you like (3e, CWM, root, stock, custom, dualboot...).

[Q] Flashing New Kernel And New ROM on CM9 SGS2

Hello guys,
I got Samsung Galaxy SII I9100 with cm9 (see attached file).
I want to flash a custom LPU rom (SPEEDMOD K3-31 kernel based), and I got some question before I do that
First, I need to flash the SPEEDMOD K3-31 kernel using Odin and then the rom from recovery, right?
After some reading in here, I found out that my kernel is stock based (really?). Does it mean that the "wipe data" function may hard-brick my phone?
I think I'm a bit confused - I've seen too many different ways to do this
Thanks!

from your screenshot, it shows you are presently on CM9.
CM9 has root access and CWM recovery by default so there is no need to flash Speedmod kernel via Odin first.
I assume you are presently on CM9 and you wish to flash a Custom Stock LPU (ICS 4.0.4) ROM, which has Speedmod as its kernel.
Follow these steps:
# don't flash Speedmod kernel via Odin.
1. Boot to CWM recovery
2. Wipe data/factory reset
3. Format /system (under mount and storage)
4. Flash Your custom ROM
5. Reboot phone.
Done
If I missed any of your questions, let me know

So when do I need to flash the speedmod kenel (the rom's kernel)?
And my current ROM/kernel won't get me a hard brick?

Your current Rom's kernel, is Cm kernel. It's very safe.
Your new ROM's kernel will be flashed together with the Rom. So there is no need to flash the kernel again.
To confirm this,
After flashing the new ROM, check the Rom details.

[Q] Need advice on some simple queries

Hi,
I use a Samsung Galaxy S2 GT-I9100, ICS 4.0.3, XWLP7, Siyah Kernel 4.1.1. I have some simple queries and need someone to advice on the same.
1) Since i am on Siyah Kernel 4.1.1, would i be able to upgrade my phone to JellyBean using KIES, when the update arrives?
2) I guess if i flash a stock kernel i would lose Root. Please correct me if i am wrong. Secondly, would it be possible to flash a stock kernel using CWM? If yes, please provide me the links to get a CWM flashable kernel.
3) I had taken a Nandroid backup after installing the Siyah kernel since it came with a new version of CWM. If i wish to restore the nandroid backup, how should i go about it?
Your valuable advice would be highly appreciated.

1. You might need to flash a stock kernel to do the same
2. Flashing stock kernel will only remove the CWM recovery, you will still have ROOT access.
I don't know where you can find the stock kernel in CWM zip format but you can flash the normal .tar stock kernel using mobile Odin
3. You can restore your backup the same way you took it, ie via CWM recovery (under Backup and restore). nothing special!
However, you need to use the same version of CWM recovery to used to backup to restore.
Thanks a lot Jokesy!!!
As usual your answers are to the point.
