Just a thought - what you guys think of this new HTC coming out - HTC Proto.. the oval shape part of the camera much resembles the Amaze in my opinion. 2 bad its rumored to be a bogged down entry level device - 1gb duo-core / 5 megapixel cam / 4 gigs of storage space lol.

wait, are you talking about replacing the recent apps button with the 3 dot menu or adding it up to make it 4 buttons? lol... at this point i'm still lost for words as to why they got rid of the search button though... i'm not feelin the 3 capacitives at all - but ofcourse that's just me... I'VE GOTS to have a search button. period. lol

They should just get rid of the static/hardware buttons altogether, and use software buttons like on the Nexus Galaxy, etc. Then, through mods, the choice of buttons, and how they look, is yours (or, more accurately, the developers).
It actually look nice for entry-level phone, im diggin it! That "amaze oval" camera looks huge though
Also guys, the recent apps soft key Is amazing, on my galaxy Nexus I'm always quickly switching between apps really quickly, lightning fast!! I prefer it over the search key! And I used the search key A LOT!

I remember Google at one point saying they wanted to get rid of the menu button because it was a mistake because it confused a lot of the newbies.
Also I think sense 4.1 has a feature where holding down the multitasking brings up the menu.

I was thinking, for AOSP ICS roms, either an apk could be created, or flashed into roms, that repurposes the menu button as the task switcher button, like on the Galaxy Nexus (Prime). Since the menu "button" is essentially in the app itself, the menu capacitive button becomes superfluous. Also, I've never had a phone or rom where holding down the home button acts as quick as just pressing the TS button on the Nexus Prime.
So, instead of the following buttons:
Home/Menu/Back/Search
We would have:
Home/Task Switcher/Back/Search
I like the idea of making it an app, as some would want to leave the buttons the way they are, whereas others might think this is a good idea. I hope the Cyanogen considers this, and puts this in their "Cyanogen Settings" section.
Here are a couple of threads that talk about the same thing, albiet in different phone forums.

Maybe you could use the bottons as quick launch icons. Allow the user to pick apps that the buttons would launch.
i think thats a great idea. i felt the same way when i read the features of ics
it doesnt seem impossible. cm7 already has the option to set program shortcuts for long pressing the the menu or home buttons, etc
Why the menu Button why not the usual home button. Instead of replacing the menu function why not replace the small icons with the ICS running apps manager.

Exactly what I was thinking. Instead of having my 4 most used apps on the bottom of my home screen (Handcent, Facebook, gmail, market) that would be pretty sick to have the captivate button as quick launch buttons for those apps.

I would say the search button. I never use it and ICS has a dedicated search bar. But yes I agree, now with ICS my next phone will have on screen controls. It looks so nice!

Personally, I think I'd rather have the screen real estate without the buttons moved to the screen, especially since we have the buttons anyway. That said, I'd be interested to see what could be done with a gesture area down there. Just so long as the on screen buttons are an option that can be turned off returning the capacitive button function.
Guys - We will have no "on-screen" buttons like the Galaxy Nexus does, ICS will use hardware buttons if they are present. So no, you will not have your 4 most used apps, you will have Home|Menu|Back|Search.
Have a good day.

^his larger, bold text, has hurt my feelings and trampled on my dreams. I kid, I kid. I like the hardware buttons anyway, the onscreen buttons for nexus ics would take up more room anyway. I got a taste of that using the ics launcher on the market.

Did you read the thread? This isn't about "on-screen" buttons. It is about changing the purpose of the existing capacitive buttons to somewhat mirror the functionality of the on-screen buttons on the Galaxy Nexus.

I installed AOSP ICS beta for Neo the other day, and saw some ports of the on-screen buttons for back, home, and recent apps. that's awesome, but it takes up a whole lotta screen space. I love the recent apps button, and would love it integrated with the system UI without taking up screen space. Any chance of devs acomplishing that? (maybe integrate it with the status bar, or some hot corner or something)
i hate long-pressing the home button to use that function

Tried it even tried the 25dpi one, but i can't shake the feeling that it's taking up screen real-estate. For example, when i play a video in landscape mode, it's still there, and i dont wanna look at it while watching a video. Also having 2 home and back buttons is kinda absurd xD but just the recent apps button, that's out of your way, would be neat

Had the iPhone 4s for about 6 months and had the EVO LTE for the past 3 weeks. Before my iPhone, I had the EVO 3D and EVO 4G. I found love for both phones, which is why I want to switch to the White S3. Seems like a potential great hybrid. However, there are some things I'm forseeing as a possible problem. Hopefully, there are ways around.
~When using exchange eMail, many of my eMails have pics integrated into them. My iPhone showed the pics as part of the eMail. EVO's make me download each pic as separate files. Can the S3 do it like my iPhone?
~What are the tactile buttons on the S3? I thought the one on the left was the menu button, but was told that was wrong. With that, how do you multi-task without the button and what is the button on the left?
~When playing music through my car stereo with my EVO LTE and I change songs, there is a weird digital noise blip. Anyone notice this with the S3?
~What's so horrible about TouchWiz that are sending people into Frenzy's in other threads? Personally, I think TouchWiz makes the phone look more like iOS.
~On the launch bar, is there a way to move where the apps launcher drawer is? I like it in the middle. Is that customizable?
Again, these are small things that I like, and any help is greatly appreciated

1. Not sure since I use Gmail and in the Gmail app, the attachments are on the bottom of the email and I can open them up individually.
2. Left button is the menu button. You multi task by long pressing the home physical button.
3. No sound issues whatsoever. Played great in the car.
4. To me TouchWiz is a little cartoonish but it doesn't bother me as much as others. But I think because it looks like iOS that's the reason people really hate it .
5. No way to move the apps launcher icon to the middle, but you can get a launcher if that's a big deal.

Thank you for the answers. The have prompted for two more:
~If the menu button is one of the physical buttons, does that mean that the apps are aware of this and don't allocate the bottom of the screen for it as well. That bottom 5% where it's all black, except for the menu icon that is. I feel that would be dumb
~If I do root, which I have never done before, does that interfere with updates that come out? The reason I ask is, I may want to switch dialers, where the app drawer launcher is, and a few other minor things
Again, thank you so far

The touch keys on either side of the physical home key are recognized throughout the entire OS, apps included.
Also you do not need to root in order to use a different Launcher [to change app launcher location).
On screen buttons have so far only been used on the Galaxy nexus, so the screen space on the S3 is purely for whatever your doing on it.
Also in case your still confused on multitasking, Holding down Home (physical middle button) brings up your running/recent apps, in which you can A: tap the one you want to go to or B: close them out by sweeping them left or right just like the notifications.
And the new touchwiz allows lock screen shortcuts now, just throwing that out there since your coming from an Evo background.

Hi guys I'm from the UK and will probably be getting this phone when they release it as the htc deluxe or whatever over here.
On my one x, I can change functionality of the recent apps button to act as the menu button, getting rid of the ugly black bar at the bottom of the screen. I was watching a video review of the DNA, and it looks like this has been removed?
Can anyone confirm if this option has been put back in?
it isn't HTC that made this descision it is Google.. they got rid of the back button for the recents button in ICS... I havent looked back since ICS... I love my recents button for quick swapping between apps... but I'm sure if you want once the developers get into the device they will allow custom button mappings. maybe not to the extent of the nexus line where you can map widgets to the button but it should easily be the menu button
Actually its the same as the one x it just wasn't enabled in the settings on the DNA in the video.

i can confirm that in the current stock buid, the option to remap buttons has been taken out, and from what i understand it was vzw descision not htc
easy fix on custom roms to remap it
Engadget's review stated this option was removed.
Do people miss having a back button when web browsing? Since there isn't even a menu button, I assume people use some kind of swiping on the screen? Unless the back button and address and such always are shown on screen....

Hmmm so hopefully this will appear on the unbranded European/global versions. Verizon took it out? I thought we had it bad over here for crapware on branded phones, but to take it back out is just mind boggling.

You can't really blame HTC for this one. This is due to poor app programming and updating. Google has clearly stated, for 2 years now I think, that apps are to have their own triple block settings button. Yes, most phone manufacturers have kept the hardware button and that has allowed software developers to not care about following the design guidelines that Google has put forth. I think that as more phones forego the menu button, a move which I fully support, the apps will be upgraded accordingly. Blame the apps, not HTC.

You can ABSOLUTELY blame HTC for this one.
There are 2 easy solutions to this:
1. Software buttons.
2. The same god dang buttons they used on the ONE X with a long press!
It's terrible that a logo is more important than non-horrible functionality.
I do agree with you that they could have implented that. I think that my ideal set up is to have the HTC logo act as the multitask button and a long press of that or the back button act as the menu button. But I still blame the app developers more for not following long standing Android design principles. In fact, the only reason they get away with it is because the Play store is open. Whenever Apple changes design guidelines, they do not allow the app to be used on the new OS until the app has been updated to follow the new design guidelines. I sometimes wish Google had a little more control over the Play store.
Do people not research a phone before they buy it anymore?
A simple search and / or watching a few of the early video reviews would have shown the button layout and how they function..
It makes NO sense (pun intended) to me that people buy a phone knowing it's features, or lack thereof, then throw tantrums on an internet forum over them..
^^^ fair enough
Know why App developers haven't implemented menu buttons in their apps? Samsung phones have menu buttons.
I don't care for the lack of a menu button myself, and long press on the back button would have made sense to include.
