Why are all these apps "running" on my s3?? HELP PLEASE. - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Disclaimer: I'm a total smart phone noob who recently went from a cheapo tracfone to a Samsung Galaxy S3.
I seem to be getting really bad battery life and I just went into my app manager and clicked on the "running" and there's a big list of apps in there...all with timers running..including a couple games I dloaded. Why are they "running" and are they draining my battery? How do I shut them down? NOTE: When I play a game or use an app, to get out of it, I just hit the Home button. Is there a way I should exit from each app?

After hitting the home button, hold it down then a list of your recent apps will show up as thumbnails, slide them off the screen to close them.

And if you are finished with an app exit it with the back button, exiting it with the home button just keeps it in ram (multitasking)

Great! thanks didn't even know I could do that. Ok so I did that and swiped them all off the screen...then did it again and went into task manager and it said "Active Applications: 0"...ok awesome. However, then I went back intoSsettings ->Application Manager and "runnning" tab and there's still a big list in there:
Settings
Factory Mode
Software update
T-Mobile My Account
AllShare Play
MAPServiceSamsung
Bonus Apps
Google Services
Dropbox
Maps
Task Manager
Media Hub
MobileLife Contacts
Email
SecPhone
GBA service
S voice
Samsung Keyboard
Deep Sea (live Wallpaper)
now I obviously understand Settings, task manager and wall paper, but why are the rest "running"??

You are always going to have running apps and services, that's unavoidable.
Just clear the recent apps menu by swiping them away and forget about the rest.
If you are rooted you can use a root explorer to go to system/app directory and delete bloatware.

This is a computer, pal. And all of them run dozens of processes. Leave Android kill by itself those that are not needed anymore...

On your Windows PC (if you have Windows), press CTRL+Shift+ESC, then click on the processes tab of the window that shows up. For extra excitement, click on "show processes from all users". See all those apps running? You don't need to care about 98% of those. That's Windows doing its thing.
Loading up a task manager on Android results in a similar list. Most of that list is just Android doing its thing, including keeping apps cached in case you need to go back to them. In almost all cases, you don't need to do anything. Even if you exit an app by pressing the Home key, Android will just page it out of memory pretty quickly unless it's specifically designed to run in the background (or just poorly programmed).
Your best bet is just to ignore task management software as they tend to do more bad than good.

visit the thread "apps safe to remove" and delete or freeze all unwanted apps forever
sent from: designed for humans

Also remember to go into S Voice settings and turn off the wake ups etc
Then go follow the tread posted above and have Titanium backup or System Tuner Pro etc ready, to Freeze bloatware.
Also you use Kies? Can also remove or rename 'kiesexe' from system/bin.
Then enjoy! Went from 90-110M free ram to 220-320M now after loading all my widgets etc

Swiping them away in that menu clears them from memory.
All running apps/services are not shown in that menu.

[Q] Mutiple Apps Opening On Their Own

When I open some Apps, 10 other Apps open along with it. Is rooting the phone the only way to have access to the means to stop this?
Thanks,

Don't pay so much attention. In general, those applications don't use your cpu and battery. Android has its own task manager system.
Yeah dis is even happening to me,the reason is so simple like one app needs the other apps so they are even opening up.

what the appl you using which is opening others appl can u name the apps
if you kill apps, they will probably get restarted automatically and left in the background. If the apps are working correctly, this is not a problem, as a well coded app does not use CPU/battery when in the background.
Actually, I just quit using a task manager to kill tasks (I just let Android kill them as necessary) and I have no problems (phone is not slower, power drain is not higher).
Maybe the thing is that after you stop a task in a task manager it does not update immediately and you don't see the task being restarted, and when you go into the task manager after running some app just then you see the apps restarted.
Also, some apps are very generic (maps) and used by other apps, and some apps need to be running all the time (latitude, mail client, widgets, etc.) and killing them would make them not work properly (widgets no longer updating, not getting new emails, etc.).
My advice is to leave the apps running if you are not very sure of what you are doing, because the OS will eventually kill unnecessary apps, and until then they should not use any CPU or battery.
Only thing is to stay away from badly written apps, the ones that use too much CPU even when in the background or when phone is sleeping. You should probably wait for a night after installing a new app to see if you have higher drain. If so, just uninstall and search for an alternative.

[Q] Closing apps nessecary?

Hey guys,
First off i would like to thank the fuys at the forum here how to root my phone etc. Was a big help.
Now for the question:
Since the start i always went to task manager after using an app/browsing to close the app altogether.
Do you really need to do this or will pressing the home button and just minimizing the apps affect battery life?
Thanks in advance,
Tim

just dwnld a task killer app from market and install the same and set the auto kill apps frequency and ur done with
Noooooooo. Don't install a Task Killer. Android is very, very good at memory management.
http://www.xda-developers.com/android/the-view-on-task-managers-for-android/
Or....
Don't use an app that automatically kills tasks. These use more juice than they claim to save (plenty of threads about same on here since I've been a member).
Unless you know a particular app doesn't close 'gracefully' & completely shutdown when you exit it (due to poor coding, etc), or if the rom you're using has some system processes that are a bit wonky; for example, some builds of some roms in the past have had issues with media service going haywire & not auto closing after it's done its thing after boot, you shouldn't need to manually close processes.
Like MistahBungle says, no need for an app killer. using the 'back' button instead of the home button closes most apps. and for apps like browser, instead of closing page after page, hit the home button, then use task manager to kill it. Or place a shortcut to "applications manager" or "running services" somewhere convenient and manually close unnecessary apps running in background.
Aight. Thanks guys.

[Q] Back Back Back until app closes?

Am I being paranoid or is my phone getting slower and slower :S I get tired of closing apps in the 'Running Services' tab. Is there a way to completely close an app? I got in the habit of hitting back until I return back to the homescreen but that doesn't work on all apps such as Facebook.
No thats the propper way..
If an app doesnt stop after hitting the back button it wont do this anyway
you have to kill it on task manager
apps like facebook wont close doen because they own notifications and live messaging

Hi
Android are supposed to keep apps 'cached' in the background - having them ready should you need them once again.
One way to 'kill' apps, to free memory is to install a 'task manager' og 'task killer' (search one of these phrases in play).
They are designed to kill a list of apps with a single touch...however Google doesn't recommend this way, as they claims it might leave the system in an unstable state.
As i can't post links, you can 'google' this: 'task-killers-answer-google-developers'
You might have a rogue app or memory leaks, or your VM values are bad for your device. Are you running out of RAM? Is your CPU usage maxing out? Are you using swap or compcache? What are your VM/sysctrl values? All these things and much more can destroy a ROM.
I find that many custom ROM's have a habit of using stupid VM values. Try getting RAM Manager from Play Store and using the "Balance" preset, it works great. I also highly suggest "SystemPanel App" from Play Store (costs $3), it has an awesome Monitoring function to record a history of how all your apps, services and processes are using the CPU. That is, if the CPU is maxing out... get a CPU Usage Monitor to find that out.
EDIT: If you are using an sd-ext partition, it can also kill performance. Especially if you move dalvik-cache to sd.

[Q] How to close an app and make it stay closed

I've tried doing a lot of personal research before asking. I have watchdog and betterbatterystats. I found 2 apps chewing away at my battery. After using the app I always press back and then it pops up do you really want to exit and I select yes. However, I look at the processes and I will see it running in the background. Using stuff like advanced task killer (and a bunch of other killer apps) doesn't help, as soon as it kills it, the thing just spawns again. I had to force close it or sometimes reboot the phone. Is there any app that locks down these apps so it only allows process to run when the app is in the foreground and as soon as we leave it closes all aspect of that app? (I can't uninstall those 2 apps cause they are kinda essential; but by no means does it require any background process or need to be constantly running). So far it only runs in the background if I opened the app once, but if it starts to auto run I'm screwed.
Is there any app like the cydia backgrounder where I can set a whitelist or a blacklist that only lets the app run in the foreground and as soon as I press home it will stop all its process.
Autostarts in the market. It let's you see what apps start up under what conditions. I would assume you can just doable all conditions the apps can start up from and it would do as you describe.

I have autostart doesn't work, ok I give you an example:
Groupon app. If you don't load it after a reboot it doesn't run, however as soon as you opened the app once. Theres like no way to close it.
Come-on... one of you guys must know how to close an app and prevent it from loading up after I leave the app. Isn't there anything like cydia backgrounder that I can set so apps are only allowed to load in the foreground and closes as soon as go back to the launcher???
Solution
The best solution to this is to install titanium backup. After that, create a widget in ur homescreen and select titanium backup widget (action). Then, select the action freeze/defrost/launch and after select the app ex. Facebook and create the widget. After, you will notice that the widget for the Facebook app has created to ur homescreen with a green locker. If u press on it, it will lock the app (freezed it actually) so it doesnt run. if you want to run the app, tap again on it and automatically will defrost it and launch it.
Hit thanks if i helped you

I just want to add some info for a better understanding even if I understand what you meant.
1. A package showing in the process list after you chose "exit" is a sign for a service running. This is not necessary bad as there are many services doing nothing but waiting for events to process (of course some service do stuff in the background and it is good to look after those).
2. In Android there is no such concept as an app, there are activities (dialogs), and services and both have pretty complex life cycles (not just opened or closed) as you can see here
But back to your question: the right way to get rid of apps you don't want/need (also called bloatware in some cases) is to freeze them. One good tool for doing that is titanium backup.

I understand the point of apps that show up and are 0% cpu usage like facebook etc. I was only using it as an example. There are plenty of other apps that do infact chew up cpu and battery after it is loaded for the first time and is unable to close the background processes (they are shown in the watchdog and betterbatterystats). So the only way is to freeze and unfreeze everytime I use these apps?

Android by design kill tasks when the resources become sparse. For this to work, an app must be able to request to be restarted once this occurs - the app (or more correct, "service") is sticky. This is why when you close the facebook app, it's restarted within seconds anyway.
If you are running Android 4 (ICS) or later, you can tell the phone not to autostart apps at boot directly from the Settings menu. Enter settings -> apps -> all, select e.g. Facebook, then click the button "Disable". Now it's gone, and for real this time! The disable button is at the place on the "Uninstall" button, and uninstallable apps are not possible to disable this way - but you can always remove them.
Some apps are neither disable nor uninstallable, though.
But if the autostart app is parental control r something like that, it wold be harder. Firstly the thing would not let you to settings. You could fool it when some settings notification appears, like there is wifi, by clicking on it you will get there without a problem, but you would not be able to delete it. To deal with it, I do personally recommend this: Root your device, get total commander for android (no, trust me, ES would not make it), open TC, get to mnt/asec where are stored installed apps files, find folder attached to that app, change the permisions that everybody could write in it, change ownership and group to some of your other apps and delete that folder. At the end, there shoul be emty folder with an emty folder in it. That should **** up the app so much that its not going to work anymore. Now you can do whatever you want.
Use Purify app
u can use boot manager module in xposed
I'm using clean master and it allows me to bock these app from autostarting.
It can solve by greenify pro smartly. You can google for greenify. After installing greenify (xposed installer) (need allow some feature) allow the modules it will work 100℅. If any errors message me on Facebook/n3xt2u
