I'd love to be posting this in the actual dev thread, but I can't.
Currently, I can't use the Gallery app because despite having items in both internal and external DCIM folder, screenshots, and where ever else it looks, I consistently get a "no items" error when launching the app, either from the home screen or from Camera.
I came from v3.1.2, full wipe, flash v4.1.3. I had a couple issues right off the bat (including this one), so I reflashed. After the reflash, this is the only problem I have left. When using the Camera, photos still save as they should, but Gallery is full-on retarded and doesn't find anything.
Besides the reflash, I've cleared both Media Storage and Gallery, with no consequence after a reboot. Anyone have any other ideas?

Go to stock and reflash?
I haven't seen this myself... but i would wipe again and flash. If that doesn't work you might have to go back to full stock and do a factory reset unfortunately.
Another thought... do you have a .nomedia folder at that folder?
Happened to me once after a base change. A restart fixed it.

Nope, no .nomedia in any of the folders Gallery should be pulling from. Everything worked OK with v3.1.2, so I'm not sure what broke.
I noticed one other guy in the SHOstock2 thread had this problem, but he never came back with a fix.
I'll get a nandroid and TB and trying going back to stock. Will it make a difference going to stock vs. stock + root? Do I need to revert the bootloader as well?

shouldn't matter but I always go not rooted and factory reset then Odin stock kernel with root and use mobile Odin from there so I never have to use triangle away and never up my count.

Welp, wipe > ucle5_stock_rooted > wipe > SHOstock2 4.1.3 and everything seems to be working so far. Gallery works, screen stays off. Just a bummer it took so much messing around.
Thanks for the help!

I've been trying to put my phone back to its factory condition in an attempt to pin point a problem but what i've noticed is that nothing really truly reverts it back to that state.
I got the stock ATT Gingerbread file listed in another thread and tried to odin back to stock but when i browse through the file structure there are still old folders from previous applications as well as all my mp3s are still in a folder i created called "Muzika" and a bunch other crap... so its not truly doing a format of my phone.
Can anyone tell me if there is a way that completely formats the note and reverts it to factory state, maybe a thread or some info that i've missed along the way.

Thanks for the reply. I'll have a go on that thread tomorrow.
I started having an issue with my phone where the pictures on my internal and external memory card are no longer being displayed in the gallery, but they are present on the memory cards. Quickpic and other apps display all of the pictures, but I want to use the stock app. I'm not new to this either. I've had the Galaxy SI, SII, and SIII since launch with no issues to date and flashed ROMs 100+ times.
Background:
I was running CM10 for a month and a half until a few days ago when my gallery and camera would crash repeatedly. They would open for a moment and then close, no error message, no force close, just exit without a message. I rebooted, cleared cache, cleared dalvik cache, wiped data from both the regular menu and from recovery, and the issue would not go away.
I then flashed Jelly Bean DLI5 with a data wipe. It would show any new pictures I took in the gallery, but would not show my old pictures that I copied into the folder. It would also not see anything at all on the external memory card.
Flashed to ICS LG8 with a data wipe and an external card format, same issue. I then learned if I copied pictures over to the camera folder 12 at a time instead of 500+ at once, they would then show up. I did that for my camera, download, screenshots, etc. folder. After a while, my pictures disappeared again.
Flashed to CM10. Pictures wouldn't display still.
Flashed back to Jelly Bean DLI5 and used an app called "fish bowl photo" to manually choose which folders I want added to the gallery. All my pictures showed up, everything looked great. Hours later in the day, all of my external card pictures are gone once again.
For every picture I copy over it gives a message along the lines of "this device may not be able to read this file, copy anyway?".
If anyone has any ideas it would be greatly appreciated. I have no clue how this issue has survived so many ROMs and so many full wipes.
The SDrescan app just freezes. Clearing cache+data from gallery and other such places does not work.
Also, the gallery closes randomly while I'm browsing through it. Could happen after 2 seconds or 2 minutes.
Thanks in advance.
i had this same problem on my phone for about 2 rom flashes.........i cant say i have a Fix, just what i did to fix after many many attempts to do the same things you are doing, wiping, clearing, flashing, ect......
Sooooo what i did was 2 things, i 1st created new folders to mirror the ones i already had and moved my pictures in bulk to each one of there new respective folders and DELETED the old ones that were not showing up. this worked for most of the pictures ( After a reboot they showed up )
the other thing i did was use the NEW gallery from the note 2 ( FLOW GALLERY ) and it seemed to pic up all my pics with no issue.
so i dont really know which one of these solved it.....as i got so fed up i was trying things all willy nilly and those are the last 2 things i did.
it does get frustrating though, so i hope you get it solved soon.

Thanks for the quick response. I'm going to try those two things in order right now.
Did you create the new folders for the internal and external cards? Or just external?
Thanks again!
just try one folder and see if it works......i even went to the extent of using quick pic to create the folders within the app instead of root explorer prior to rebooting.
but i have flashed many roms since then and no longer have that issue with the "Flow Gallery"

Unfortunately neither of those worked. I'll try the folder trick some more after work.
Another strange thing is that the gallery (even the flow gallery I just installed) will randomly close itself while looking at pictures. So that's the stock and Note II gallery doing that now.

Thats crazy.....i know you have wiped. but have you tried the superwipes. or dialing *2767*3855# ( Will Wipe NO MATTER WHAT AFTER YOU PRESS # ) then going into advaced in CWM and formatting system/cache/partition
i would do all of these, to make sure that there is not something lingering from earlier flashes. i do them anyway before ANY flash just to be safe.

I'll give it a go in a few hours when I'm home from work and let you know how it goes. Thanks for all of the ideas, I appreciate it.
Edit: On the way home I use Quickpic as mentioned. I changed a folder, rebooted, it was there. Did another, it worked. Did 5 or so individually and they all worked. I then did the last few without a reboot after each and now I only see a few folders on my external card and nothing from the internal. I was so close!!
Ok, I tried everything mentioned without any luck.
Tried 10 other things too.
I then removed the external SD card. Then wiped the phone via the dialer, wiped the phone from the setting menu, flashed LG8 via Odin, wiped it via recovery. Copied the files over that go on the internal memory. Everything works, gallery doesn't close by itself. Put in a new external SD card, formatted it, copied the files over and so far everything is OK. It could change at any moment though and I'm worried about changing ROMs now. I'll check back in if it screws up again soon, but hopefully it was just that one card.
Thanks again for the help.
my phone is stuck on the vibrant screen. currently using slimbean. i was restoring my files using titanium backup. i finished the backup. i reinstaled chainfire 3d. then as i was installing, it rebooted. then it got stuck on vibrant screen. i tried recovery. it is still working. however. i tried to restore it. first there is an error. then retry. it worked. however the time i backed it up was qhen i was still on froyo. is there a solution? or just odin back to stock? or i am in big trouble? havent tried download mode as i am not at home. what to do?
Wait, so you tried to restore a Froyo nandroid when on an ICS ROM? That is a no-no. If that is a case, I am sorry but a trip through Odin is in your future.
If you have not done that, then try to boot into recovery and either do 1 of 2 things. Wipe /cache and /dalvik and see if that works out for you (remember boot will take longer after doing that, 2-5mins). Or you can try to reflash the Slim Bean over itself and see if it will reboot.
But in all likelihood, you'll probably have to flash back to stock and come back through the normal pathway.

im all good bro. odined back to stock. then froyo, then exrom, then slim bean. im all good now bro. and i have set my nandroid to the latest. on slimbean. thank you for your help sir.
however, there is an error with regards to internal storage. i have transferred my pictures and music files back to my internal storage. however. it seems the device cannot read the files. especially pictures and mp3 files. nothings appears on the stock gallery of slimbean. so, i used quickpic instead. and the pictures are there. however, the mp3 are still gone. tried an mp3 player app. its still not there. mp3 are nowhere to be found on the list. but the files are on my internal storage. i have used the search button. i have found several threads in regards to this. but there is not definite solution for this as of the moment. there are suggestions. but it doesnt necessarily means that it will work on other devices.
There was an issue with ROM manager and the .nomedia file screwing up media scan. Uninstall ROM manager and delete the .nomedia file from phone (anywhere you see it). Then go to settings>manage apps>all apps>media storage and delete data. Reboot your phone and allow 5-10 min for full scan. Your pics etc should be there etc.

Hello, s2 galllery just become unusable. How ? Well I connected device to the pc, copyed some photos to pc and then deleted some photos of s2 gallery from my computer with shift+delete. after that I disconnect device and guess what? Yes gallery and photo itself either lags alot even though its even less photos in the mobile than before or does not even start or says gallery is not respoding. Restarted device - did not help. deleted gallery data(cache) from applications section also did not help. I hope to find an answer without doing a factory reset.
for now it doesnt even start - says loading for ever

Did you do a safe disconnect of device?
Also, why does doing factory reset bother you? All you need to do is backup apps/appdata via Titanium Backup Pro, and SMS via SMS Backup, factory reset and restore backups and contacts will sync via google account. Its no big deal your not going to lose anything.
Also, why on earth call this a "major bug" when its completely obvious that it isnt otherwise it would be very common and well known about already. Plus you dont even bother to mention what ROM you're using, did you even check the roms thread? Or if stock did you contact Samsung?
I don't like factory resets either, I actually avoid them.

Well if everything works fine, Its not that your "avoiding it" its simply that you "dont need" to use it. So your original comment makes no sense.
Only time you need to wipe data is when moving to a new rom base/type, If you face issues or if you just want to do a clean install.

Avoiding it by not messing up with it. I could choose to go and play with things that will require a factory reset. I think I made that pretty clear, you just have to read it, think about it and read it again.
I'm good with semantics & semiotics, didn't I tell you that?
BTW, I flash with MO, it does the wipping itself.
Be good now.

And at what point did you make it "pretty clear" ?
Also what has Mobile Odin got to do with the price of fish? The wipe in question is in general if you have issues with a particular rom resulting in attempting to clear it by clearing non-default data/settings, Not about when wiping before/after first rom flash which is mostly for custom roms via CWM when its strongly advised unless moving up version of same rom. Since it ounds like you only use stock rom then you will very rarely come across teh need to use wipe.
Either way its not that your "avoiding" it, its simply that you have no "need" to use wipe in your circumstances because its not necessary.
Wiping data/factory reset is no big deal either way as the most important stuff can very easily be backed up and restored so if you have issues with system and cant resolve it then just backup everything and do wipe (and/or clean install of rom) and restore it back, simple.

Second quote TheATHEiST
Obviously you are talking to somebody who is very inexperienced with Android.
You can always download gallery apps from the play store. This would be along your lines of something you can do to fix it.
Also this is not a major bug!! Very very very minor at best!

I rooted my xperia x10 mini around a year ago, and all was fine. I recently unlocked the bootloader, and decided to try flashing a new rom and kernal as Sony refuse to do any further updates. I backed everything up on titanium back up, videos, contacts, apps etc. And also followed the instructions to do full back up when I flashed the new rom. I followed everything to the letter, but when the new rom was installed, I could find no contacts, music, apps or anything? I thought the best option was to use cwm and restore back? That looked as if it had gone ok, but there was a message at the end to say something? img? could not be found, and it didn't revert back, just hung at nAa screen, and would do nothing else.
After reading a few threads, I thought I'd go back to SE stock firmware - better than a dead phone! But although the sd card is showing all my back ups, including titanium back up, nothing is showing in the phone apps, or folders, all my contacts are missing, pictures, notes, everything :crying:
How do I get everything back to where it shoud be?? It may be a stupid question, but I hope you can offer some advice please.
The phone is rooted again. Thanks in advance from a newbie flasher
Did you restore your backup using Titanium again then?
The other way is to do advanced restore from CWM and choose data only.

Pictures are usually stored on the sd-card, so they won't get affected if you change your rom or kernel, not sure what happened with that, but the best way to get everything back would be to use CWM and choose advance restore to get your data back I suppose, it will restore everything that was on internal memory.
The reason you got stuck at the nAa-kernel logo when you restored from cwm previously is because you also restored your old rom, which doesn't run with the nAa-kernel.

It may be that just the thumbnails of those pictures are messed up, not the pictures itself. I would suggest copying your pictures to a folder on your computer, deleting them from sd-card and open the gallery, so it can update it's thumbnails (it will delete them all). If you then move back your pictures to your sd-card it will generate proper thumbnails again.
The txt-messages should be in your CWM-backup.
I don't know if you had CWM installed on your phone before you flashed the kernel, and what kernel you used when you made the backup. It can be a bit tricky if you tried JellyBean, but not impossible. I need a bit more information from you to be sure about how to go about that.

Hi. Yes, I installed CWM before hand, and did a complete back up, I used the miniCM7 robyn rom and the nAa-2.6.29.6-nAa 14 kernal. I had considered jelly bean, but thought I'd just start with this one, before working my way up! Someone suggested ST15i 4.2.0.A.62 but it didn't sound right for the X10mini? I only bought the phone 18 months ago, so its a shame there are no further updates.
I did try to restore through the advanced setting on cwm, but it didn't work, I had the same message as before about something being missing.
I noticed another thread about a similar problem, a mismatch between numbers?? Not too sure, but it sounded similar to the problem I had.
At least I have back most of my pictures Thanks for your help.

hmm, it sounds almost like your sd-card is experiencing some problems, maybe you could copy the whole thing to your computer and reformat it. but i don't think the backup will be valid anymore.
The number mismatch is the md5-checksum, The backup calculates a number when the backup is created, which is stored alongside your backup.
The restore function then uses the same method to create a checksum from the backup-file and compare it to the number created when the backup was made. If they don't match, the most likely option is a corrupt backup file, which is a pain.
And no, the st15 is the 2011 xperia mini i think, you better stick with E10-kernels and robyn-ROMS for the x10mini (if it doesn't have a hardware keyboard)
