Rooting, unlocking, and bluetooth - HTC Rezound

I've been lurking here for a while and i found a lot of good stuff, mostly for my old phone (HTC Incredible, LOVED it). When i rooted the Incredible, i really kinda winged it without fully understanding what i was doing and miraculously came out on top, with the help of a friend of mine. I kinda wanna avoid that this time with the Rezound, so i want to educate myself a little better. I have several questions and i wanted to consolidate them all to one thread, so please bear with me. I apologize ahead of time if anything i say is incorrect; i am not as adept with phones as i would hope
1) To start, for now, all i want to do is unlock/s-off the phone so i can set it up for a new ROM and get all the bloat off. I have found several ways of rooting the phone, mostly with Gingerbread, but i just upgraded to ICS about a week ago. However, from what i understand, the procedures seem to be pretty similar, but there are several of them online. What i have come across as the ones that i understand are:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1829484
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1504824 - The all-in-one tool
Basically, can i follow these steps and use the phone with stock ROM? I also heard something somewhere about affecting battery life, but cant remember if it was in a good or bad way; any truth to that?
2) I was planning on unlocking bootloader using the HTC Dev's site. Next thing i'm not totally understanding is what it means to "flash a recovery". I was planning on using Amon Ra, though im not sure what it means to do that.
3) Once i follow the steps (was planning on using the first thread i posted), will i be able to remove anything i want, even with the stock ROM on there?
4) Last one is kind of an outsider, but i used to have a laptop with bluetooth capability, and i used my phone essentially as a remote control for music since it was hooked up to some nice speakers. On my desktop now, i have a USB dongle, but when i try to hook it up, it keeps telling me that i need Mobile Hotspot/Tethering, when pretty much all i do is want to play music over the computer speakers. Any solution to that/will rooting fix that "problem"?
I understand a lot of this is already posted, but none of them were really explained as in depth as i would have hoped. Any help here, be it answering the questions, posting some good articles to further educate myself, etc. is much appreciated. Thanks in advance guys, and thanks for making an awesome phone even better!:good:

You need to unlock the bootloader before you root it.
Step 1: Unlock bootloader
Step 2: Flash AmonRA recovery
The command is:
fastboot flash recovery recovery-ra-(rest of name).img
Step 3: Boot into recovery, then either flash a custom ROM or SuperSU for the stock ROM
Once you have root you can freeze/uninstall bloatware to your desire.
Are you sure the USB dongle for your desktop is bluetooth and not wifi?

thanks for the response, will look into doing those steps in order
I am positive the dongle is bluetooth. i can pair the device, but when i try to connect it, it will tell me i need to purchase hotspot/tethering to use this feature. the only thing i want to use it for is play music through the computer, so if there is an option in the bluetooth settings that i can change so it knows i dont want to use the network, im alright with changing that.

I've never heard of that happening, but once you root it, you can disable/remove all the Verizon crap so it won't bother you anymore.

S-off is achieved in a completely different way. You are boot loader unlocked, which means you can only get root and install ROMs.

So if i wanted to s-off the phone, is the only way to do that through the wire trick? i tried doing the Perm Root in the all-in-one kit, but i cant really get it to work. I got it to flash the zip, but still says s-on. anyone had luck with the all-in-one tool to root?

S off has nothing to do with root.
If you want soff you have to do the wire trick.
You dont need soff for root.

Wondering if anyone knows how to flash to Page Plus?? I have to also flash a Droid Razr Maxx and found info on how to do that so wondering if I can use the same process? Any information would be very helpful and greatly appreciated.

[Q] Root Questions + S-Off HELP needed.

So like most users, I was very excited to hear about the ICS leak by Football since I've been waiting MONTHS for some sort of development on that.
Getting impatient on waiting for CM9 and Evervolv builds for the Amaze, I really wanted to try this new leak for T-Mobile. So I figured that in order to do that, I must get S-Off.
It seemed like a tedious process so I've been holding it off for a while. Now that I've got a copper wire and everything, I wanted to do the deed once and for all.
So I accidentally flashed a stock rom (which I thought was a good thing since the instructions said I needed a stock rom), but I seem to have lost root access. Superuser runs, but battery calibration says I need to have root first and Titanium Backup doesn't work. However, my phone still says unlocked and I can still run ClockworkMod Recovery. The S-Off program tells me that there's an error. Is there anyone that can help?

Well you are on T-mobile so you have two choices here. you can S-off if you want to have total freedom or you can revert your phone to stock and relock your bootloader and flash it and then re-unlock again. but remember flashign this without s-off may prevent you from getting s-off later on.

Well, I can't flash the PH85IMG without S-Off, right? Because on the HBoot screen, it would load the file but i wouldn't be asked if I wanted to install it. So I had no idea what to do. I thought I had to have S-Off to install it. Does this really mean I've lost root even though my phone says unlocked and I can run Clockworkmod?

Pretty sure you just use fastboot to lock, open a command prompt with your phone attached in debugging mode, type in fastboot oem lock, then install the stock rom listed in the development section. (If I am wrong on this, someone please feel free to correct me.)

Can't get root

alright guys so my only rooting/rom changing/whatever experience comes from the Droid 1, which was an extreme breeze to install and get root access easily, well overall super easy to install all you needed well now I'm having trouble with the rezound as it's a little more complicated (for me) anyways here's what I need help with
I unlocked my bootloader following the super noob guide, In the super noob guide the directions say to install the ICS leak 3.11 and then install the All in one HTC rezound tool thing I did all of that and Managed to unlock my bootloader and I am not 100% sure if I instaled the custom recovery but It seems like I did, If AmonRa is the ICSandwichy looking bootloader with the blue letters, IF it is then I did install it then here comes what I need help with, I cant seem to get anything out of clicking the perm root on the extras I am running the program on administrator and also tried it without running in administrator, I tried and tried but I can't seem to get root (checked with app root access and odesn't give me it) I even tried installing it through the options of the clockworkmod thing/Adamnro by clicking on the install su & superuser? option it says it installs it but once I'm checking it doesn't work
I have however not installed any kernels nor roms im still running on the ICS leak from when I unlocked the bootloader, Help me great XDA community
any help will be appreciated
EDIT: I forgot I also run it in debug mode and when I try to get perm root I do it when the phone is on
The easiest way to install super user is through amon ra recovery,I believe it's under advanced or devoloper options.or just flash a rooted custom rom I suggest picking one that includes the boot image that gets flashed in bootloader. The newer roms are mostly set up for s-off only and don't include an easily flashable boot image.

I had to flash these 2 files in recovery to get root working. You might need to install busy box once booted up but not 100% sure if that was needed.
I could not get root working by using the option in Amon or the tool. Flashing these 2 files was the only way I was able to get root. I was on 3.14 leak though but should be the same for 3.11
If you are still having trouble and you have a windows based system, t wouldn't hurt to give my toolkit a try. It doesnt have the super fancy GUI but it is very functionable. I designed it to help myself when i was a super noob. It goes through the whole process step by step and explains in the simplest terms possible how you should do it.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1571746
just a tip, make sure you have all of the htc drivers when you are doing this and then once you have finished the step telling you to install the recovery, go back into the bootloader by either doing it manually or using my program once your phone is on. (util, then roboot into bootloader) Once you are in the bootloader, see if you can get into the recovery section. If you got in successfully then you should be in a differnet menu, from there go to the development section of amon ra and then select root. Hopwfully you get success but if you did not do the following.
Go to the mounts section of amon ra and then mount the phones usb storage. It should still be plugged in so the device should show up on your computer. Go and download the latest superuser from here:
http://androidsu.com/superuser/
place it in the root of the device storage thats on your computer (the root is the main directory or folder)
then unmount the storage from your phone and go to the flashing section on Amon Ra. From there select the superuser zip folder from the sd card. Flash it and if it still gives you an error i would check your steps or request more help because i cant help you beyond this point.
I hope this walkthrough has helped and good luck on obtaining root. With root you arent limited to anything. If you are feeling good after you get root i would suggest trying to get s-off. To get s-off you have to do hardware tricks not just software tricks, but s-off is much harder and more dangerous. Have fun with your new and hopefully rooted device!
wow after having this post up for a matter of seconds i have a thanks, glad i helped!
thank you very much this worked magically
thank you for your great reply but I tried the above method and it worked beautifully I still checked out and downloaded your tool it is very nice good job on it dude and I got S -off already as well wire trick was tricky as I was trying to use a copper wire and it was workin then I got my old ipod charger cable and cuted it then got mad because I thought it wasn't going to work because they were like tiny wires tied toguether but who knew first try and it worked perfectly...

[Q] Some help would be greatly appreciated!

Hello all, I have been coming to this site for a few months and have found a wealth of helpful info in that time for my previous phone, which was an HTC Desire. I recently switched to a new carrier (T-Mobile) and I got an HTC Amaze 4G. This phone came with ICS already installed. I have browsed through many threads, and read many pages in several threads on making the phone S-Off, unlocking bootloader, and have yet to really understand what exactly I need to do to root my device.
My goal is to just get me phone rooted so that I can install superuser and so I can use some backup/recover apps, remove/freeze most of the bloatware preoinstalled on the phone, and maybe install some custom Roms sometime in the future.
The only thing I have accomplished currently is unlocking bootloader. I still have S-On and Hboot 1.93.0002. I hate to sound like a noob, but after reading through many threads, I am still not sure what exactly I have to do to get this phone rooted.
Can anyone share some info that will help me get my Stock HTC Amaze 4G with stock ICS preinstalled rooted please? I can certainly use some help.
Now that you have unlocked bootloader I think you want to flash a recovery. Download hasoons all in one tool, check that you have usb debugging checked to perform functions. Most users are using 4ext. After recovery is installed flash super user.

I will need to have S-Off before I can use his program, correct? I will need to use the wire trick to get S-Off I assume after reading some threads....
Where I am getting confused is it says I have to be rooted before I can do the wire trick to go S-Off.... but I can't figure out how to get rooted first.
**EDIT**I just watched the video from Hasoons program on doing the wire trick, seems simple enough. Only problem is according to the instruction page on the juopunutbear S-Off page, I have to be rooted as a prerequisite before I can do the wire trick, and I can't seem to be able to figure out how exactly to root my device after I unlocked the bootloader. Getting a head ache from this
Don't look at the S-Off program. Look at this instead.

[Q] How to get S-Off after Rooting and 1 other question:

I need some advice, I have two problems I need to deal with on my new LTE phone.
First: I received my EvoLTE two days ago and immediately Rooted using HTCDev and the TWRP recovery. I wrongly believed this would give me S-Off and obviously I was wrong about that. So...I need to learn how to get S-Off after Rooting. From reading on the forum it seems I have to do the S-Off procedure and then go through the Rooting process again.
Question: I'm Rooted presently, can I follow the S-Off procedure while Rooted which will un-Root me apparently, then once again do the Rooting steps? I don't know if I have to un-Root first, then do the S-Off steps, then Root again, or if I can just do S-Off which will un-Root me then Root again.
I haven't found a clear answer yet and appreciate any and all help.
----------------------------
Question: I've had my LTE for 2 days now, I've rooted and added apps that I had on my OG Evo but have not installed a custom ROM yet. From the beginning my phone turns it's sound profile to "Silent" automatically without my input. I can go to the Sound Profile and it will be turned to "Silent", I press on the "Normal" button and Normal shows up under "Sound". Within a couple of minutes the Sound profile reverts to "Silent". It's more than annoying to say the least. I need to fix this as I need "Sound" with the phone.
I do have Extreme Call Blocker installed and have it set to "1st Ring Mute", I wonder if that could be affecting the phone and making it go into the Silent setting? On my OG Evo I used Extreme Call blocker for over 2 years and it didn't affect anything. Just throwing this out there in case anyone has ideas.
I can't find any other Settings that would affect the Sound or that would make the phone revert to "Silent". I need some help on this one guys.
I appreciate it,
Thanks,
DC

As far as I'm aware, it shouldn't matter if you're rooted or not. If you do the dirty racun method (not what I did), you should be ok. There are a couple of stickies in the HTC EVO 4G LTE Original Android Development forum that you wanna check out. I used the method under [HBOOT 1.19/1.15 S-OFF] Downgrade HBOOT 1.19 and lower on HTC EVO 4G LTE method, and it worked perfectly. I didn't even do it right the first time I tried it (tried to skip steps!!), and I was still able to go back and follow the steps to correct my screw up. I prefer the one where I do all the steps, because I can account for where something might go wrong.

Turn off your profiles? I've been using CM10, and that's what I'd recommend. I don't know for sure, but I'd figure it was an issue either with the ROM, or a setting that you didn't think of. I don't really use profiles myself, so I don't know what would be causing that. See if it follows you into another ROM.
running dirty racun method shouldn't unroot u. are u actually rooted or just bootloader unlocked? if you are actually rooted u have super user or supersu app on your phone. if u are just bootloader unlocked and have twpr installed you are not fully rooted. u have to relock the bootloader, then run dirty racun, then u can just flash a rooted rom. that is basically what i did.
i unlocked bootloader, installed twrp, relocked, ran dirty racun for s-off, then unlocked again, then flashed meanrom and i was rooted with full access and s-off.
whether i needed to go through the unlock and lock to begin with i don't know.

Thanks to both of you for your suggestions. I successfully used DirtyRacun this morning after first having my phone bricked and my 16g sd corrupted and ruined last night. The guys with DirtyRacun were great and walked me through an Ubuntu procedure that brought the LTE back to life. This morning I was successful in getting S-Off using DR. (what a relief!)
I've got to reinstall TWRP and will be reading on the forum about how to do that. I did the one procedure where you get it unlocked and TWRP installed with S-ON before backtracking and doing DirtyRacun's S-Off bit of magic. "Bricking" my phone last night and running the fix erased TWRP so I have to install it again.
thanks,

What do I need for root?

Hi guys!
I read the forum, then read some more. And then read sticky topics and other links....
... and I'm totally confused now!
I want to root the phone, so I can manipulate the memory of it. That's it. I don't want to lock, unlock, S-off, flash or whatever the term it is for whatever action.
Is there a glossary on those terms, readable by a human being?
What I need is the Game CIH to work, so I can get more money/coins/lives/whatever in my games.
For that, I need the phone rooted.
And there we have it Now you know what I need, so if there's someone that can tell me 'go follow THIS tutorial' or 'read here', I would be very grateful!
This is most likely already poking my eyes out, but I have no idea what ROM flashing is, nor why would I want S-OFF instead of S-ON....
Help!
AW: What do I need for root?
If u only want root you dont need s-off
S-off gives you the ability to flash everything, even another bootloader
but if you dont even have an idea about that, better stay away from that
Heres a list of those terms :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/Glossary
Do u have a GSM or cdma phone?
This guide is for GSM, the part of unlocking+root should be the same for cdma , but if you are cdma better wait for another cdma user just to make sure

No, i said you need an unlocked bootloader
That is not the same as s-off
S-off is only needed if you want to flash aosp roms one day
Just follow the instructions of the second link (a+b) and you will have root access
But make a backup first
Conclusion:
1 backup (adb , there are tools for that, i think one was named ultimate backup tool, if you dont find it search for Android 4 backup without root or similar)
2 unlocking bootloader (htcdev, a from link)
3 flash custom recovery(adb , b from link)
4 flash superuser (copy to SD, boot to recovery, install zip from sd)
That should be all for root

I managed to understand the instructions you linked to, but it's good to have a summary just to make sure I did indeed understood everything as I should have
But there's a problem :/
B4. A link to recovery on mediafire is dead :/
And I don't have 10 posts yet, so I can't post in dev forum and ask OP to make an update.
On the other hand, he clearly stated he doesn't read private messages regarding other people problems :/
I'll go if I can be useful somewhere else on the forum and get myself up to 10 posts
Any recovery made for your phone should work. I would recommend 4EXT Touch Recovery. I uploaded it here for you http://www.mediafire.com/?702ttkdggk69g3i so just unzip it and use the recovery.img as the instructions imply.
Do note that I downloaded this recovery via their app I downloaded from 4ext.net using an Evo 3D CDMA phone. I do know 4EXT works with both CDMA and GSM phones but I can't be certain if they use different recovery.img files.
Thank you all!
I successfully rooted the phone, thanks to you!
Actually, not only you, mostly the guy who wrote the crazy good tutorial!
But without you my mojo wouldn't be enough to make it through
I unlocked the bootloader via htcdev.com, then flashed recovery image and finally ran superuser.apk.
I'm in the process of restoring all my data back to the phone at the moment, and this should be it I guess
Thank you so much for your help, going through the process once really put all the pieces together for me.
Now I really know what some terms actually mean
So... if I would like to install different OS (CWM, CM...), it's much easier now, right?
I should go to recovery and say "install from a file" and select my new OS?
I think so... but nevermind, I'm done with the questions. You've both been more than helpful already
P.S.
Oh so many smilies... can you tell I'm happy?
