I wanted to start a thread to source some ideas for improving the stability of CM9 that would be easy for anyone to implement. Please feel free to share yours. I'll try to update the OP semi-regularly with your suggestions.
Not necessarily arranged in order of effectiveness.
1) Fix permissions in recovery. I'm not sure what this technically does, but it seems to have helped with responsiveness and stability.
2) Modify read/write speed of SD card. This can be done easily with a variety of apps, but the one i chose to use was SD speed increase. I used the suggested value of 2048. Its really easy and seems to have made a difference in when I am playing music.
3) Changed media apps that I use frequently (apollo and beyondpod) to system apps with titanium backup. I cannot confirm if this has made a substantial difference, so I may remove this within the next couple of days.
4) Turned off surface dithering (settings--->performance) - not sure I noticed any difference in visual appearance or responsiveness.
5) Enabled 16 bit transparency (settings--->performance) - again, not sure if it actually did anything.
6) Using an app such as system tuner, disable unnecessary apps from automatically launching at startup.
7) Long press the back button to kill the foreground app. I do this for apps that I feel don't need to be running constantly, such as the browser, xda app, etc. This function can be enabled under settings--->development.
I haven't tried fixing permission yet but it may work. Has anyone tried format system. Some roms say format some don't.

I'm coming from a fresh install of CM9 beta1 (wiped cache, system, data and dalvik) and so far I have had 1 random reboot and just a few force closes. Haven't tried doing fix permissions, might do that later today and see what happens.
if a ROM says not to format system, it is likely because it automatically does it.

In the past I would wipe my entire card and it helped with clearing up roms :/

I would like a "remove all" apps in the "recent apps" menu. Kinda like on the s3. Probably not going to happen, but if someone gets bored and thinks this can be solved by a zip file or something, I'd sure appreciate it

You can map the back button so that when its long pressed it kills the foreground app. That seems to help from having tons of apps running.

I have that set up, but I never really think to use it.

I don't know exactly how long this has been happening, but recently I noticed that my phone doesn't seem to fully sleep. Opening Spare Parts it tells me that it is awake pretty much 100% of the time (see photos)... more than likely what's been raping my battery. Also, I have no idea what "Phone on 0.0%" means. Right now I am running Bionix 2.1, Dragon Kernel 3.1.2 w/Voodoo enabled, and KB1 modem.

If I had to guess..it would be the Dragon Kernel raping your battery. Try a stock kernel and see if you get the same results
I understand that using Dragon Kernel will use more battery than stock, but has anyone else using it experienced the 100% awake thing? I am more concerned about the phone not "sleeping" ever which has to REALLY be using the battery.

Check the settings and make sure your display and other settings it may be stuck (not sure how that could happen) but try messing with the various settings then reboot and check to see if that works. If not it may just be a quirk in the rom/kernel and reflash a different rom or kernel
Well so far I have ODIN'd, reflashed Bionix 2.1, and flashed a different kernel with the same results... 100% time spent without sleeping. Any other ideas?
I'm having the same issues as the OP. I'm currently running eugene's lates kernel in the Dev forum. I forget which number it was.
I'm starting to think it might be an app. I uninstalled a few apps and I haven't found the culprit yet. About to uninstall everything and start from there. According to System Panel, Spare Parts is a cpu hog or whatever.

I'm running cm7 1.6.1 on t'bolt and I'm noticing when I go into sub menus instead of switching, it overlaps. I'm also running animod but not sure if that's the cause, because it didn't always do that.

I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest that you changed the default fonts to something of your own liking and that the font is most likely to blame...
Agreed. It definitely looks like fontface and size were changed which is causing the overlaps.
Thanks for the reply guys but what I meant was if I do menu>settings>adwlauncher>uisettings.....the menu that would come up, appears on top of "uisettings"(for example) I added a clearer pic. These are two screens showing at the same time.

Revert to the default fonts and see if it continues to happen on this menu too.
Did you ask the same question in this ROM's thread (in the development section) ?
Yeah I tried that but it didn't work. Don't have enough post yet to post in development. It won't let me.
Sent from my ADR6400L using Tapatalk
I would say it's a problem with "animod" or your settings. I assume animod modifies animations or transitions which is probably what caused your problem when going from one menu to the next. It's definitely not a CM problem though. Try removing animod, restoring to a backup prior to animod changes, or wipe and flash CM...problem will probably vanish.
Ok well after a full wipe and flash. I found out animod wasnt the problem it was the epic bold and blue theme I was using from the theme chooser. Which sucks cuz it was the best blue theme. Thanks for all the help.
Sent from my ADR6400L using Tapatalk
Yea, whenever you have a problem...always mention if you've themed anything. I have never used (or heard of) animod so that was the likely candidate to me since I wasn't sure exactly what all you did with it or what it does and you didn't mention themeing.
Either way, glad you figured it out.
Heh, I did a quick Google search for 'animod' and only got stuff related to anime cartoon stuff !

Have you ever wondered just what is running in the background, using up all your memory, draining your battery and why/how apps can start themselves back up even after you have stopped them running either through the settings menu or with a task killer............
I did, so I looked into this app and this is what I've figured out so far.
Some apps (Google maps for example, as this is one of the worst culprits I've found so far) have rules built into them which can start the app running in the background whenever a certain parameter is met on your phone, this means that no matter how many times you kill the app it can always find a rule to get going again which is another reason you shouldn't use a task killer as they create an endless cycle app starts task killer kills it app starts again task killer kil........ you get the picture? Which often ends up using more resources which our wildfires are seriously lacking.
Some of the rules are ridiculous too such as Google maps can start itself simply by you plugging in the phones charger.
Well anyway back to the point, this app https://market.android.com/details?id=com.elsdoerfer.android.autostarts&hl=en autostarts can disable those rules (needs root access) and the best way to use it I feel is like this.
Start the app and wait a minute for it to load, then hit your menu button and choose group by application .
Search through the list and disable the parameters for apps you don't want running in the background.
Be very careful with system apps as some can stuff up the phone.
This app increases the speed of my phone big time and allows me to control what us running and when. I'd say its the best app I've ever bought.

Hi would this effect v6 supercharged script if i used this? this sounds a good app
Not to my knowledge, I'm running v6 too.
All it does is break the rules so an app you don't need in the background can't start until you allow it to by selecting it from the app drawer, then if you close/kill the app when you're done with it it shouldn't start up again by itself.

Thanks for reply. I will get it now. Can i ask a quick question? How do display your setup on each post? do you write it each time or copy paste? Sorry, its just new to commenting here and only been reading the forum for a year, learning lol.

sorry, me again could i just ask you what you set Google maps permissions in Autostart? as i can see, Ive turned all off apart from bottom 2. As the permissions seem not needed.
The way I set it up is all or nothing, that way every loophole is closed for apps I don't want running.
You can change your signature by clicking on your username top right, from there I can't remember as I'm not at a PC.
Click around in your profile till you find signature tab or edit signature.

Thanks for help Ive set one up now. I have found a logo picture from Google images of cm7.
I hope i haven't copied anyone's but if i have please pm me and ill change it.
Interesting app, will definitely try soon.
Feck me sideways!!!
Best app ever. Period.
Thanks for telling me about this app.
So all i have 2 do is to cross out apps that run when i "reboot"?
This is the 1st option of autostarts.
Thats all ?
Kind of but if an app doesn't really need to run, look at this picture and read the labels,
For example Google maps can start itself by plugging in your charger or installing a new app.

So to me the best way to deal with it would be to cancel everything then it will only start when i want it to and if you close it properly it won't hang about in the background.

Hi,
So I had had FC issues with contacts on eclipse 1.2 previously, and i had thought maybe it was just bad data or something that could be fixed with a data wipe. What happens is that dialer works fine and i can call people and make text messages, but when i switch into the contacts pane, and i try to select one of my contacts to look at them, contacts crashes (see attached screenshots if that makes no sense)
Anyways it's really annoying because i can't add any new contacts because it crashes whenever i try. So i was putting up with it until i decided to switch to eclipse 1.3. Well, i took the plunge today, and 1.3 happily does not have the problem. So i went in to delete the Swype that comes with eclipse because it's really crappy, and i wanted to put on Swype beta to my phone (why isn't nitro just building Swype beta into eclipse, i don't get it... Clearly the beta is much better).
So i go into root explorer, head over into /system/app and delete Swype.apk - and contacts immediately crashes. I'm not kidding, immediately. It must have been running in the background or something, but it immediately forced closed. And now the problem is back. So clearly deleting the original Swype is what is causing the force close issues. And the fact that i replaced that Swype with the beta and there is now another version of Swype.apk in /system/app doesn't make the fc issues go away.
So I'm left wondering, why is Swype causing this FC issue? Obviously there must be a dependency somewhere in contacts.apk... Does anybody else seem to have this problem? Does anybody know of a solution other than just living without Swype beta?
Any thoughts?
Sent from my DROID X2 using xda premium
Would anyone be willing to try to replicate the problem? All you would have to do is just make a nandroid, then go to /system/app and delete or rename Swype.apk and tell me what, if anything happens, see if your contacts app works...
Sent from my DROID X2 using xda premium
i went about removing swype from my eclipse rom by using titanium backup to back it up then uninstalled it through there. I then booted into recovery and wiped dalvik cache, rebooted phone and installed swype beta, no issues for a month or so.
hope that helps
Ignore post sorry.
Wiping dalvik cache did not fix the problem.

First switch your input method to something other than Swype, Rename/remove the following files, reboot, then install Swype beta.
/system/app/swype.apk
/system/app/lib/libswypecore.so
/data/dalvik-cache/[email protected]@clases.dex
/data/data/com.swype.android.inputmethod.apk

I have ics and my home screen is constantly refreshing and it takes about 5 seconds for everything to pop-up. Same thing for my app tray. It didn't do this with GB. How can i fix this? Is there a ROM that i can use but still keep the blur stuff? I'd rather just stick with sick ROM if possible. I've tried resetting my phone daily but that isn't the problem. I posted pictures of my app tray and home screen.
Thanks in advance! !

Mess around with the settings within the app. Menu-apex settings. Try turning off transitions for example. Same thing helps if u disable transitions from developer options in normal settings

I tried Apex, didn't like the lag.
I am using NOVA instead. Looks the same as stock ICS launcher, yet buttery smooth.
For more tweaks on making ICS smoother, try these:

I'm not looking for thanks.
Check your free memory. This normally happens when your launcher gets thrown out to make space. Maybe get rid of some bloat.
Edit: Another option could be raising the memory limits to throw out apps earlier (hopefully not the launcher, lol, but apparently that gets kinda elevated treatment).

As of other launchers, I had the best experience with stock launcher, smoothest of the pack...

I get these every once in a awhile to. I think its due to the launcher needing more memory. It seems to happen when I am doing many things at once so I would assume its just running out of ram to use
