[Q] Backporting JB email & Activesync? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all,
I was wondering if it was possible to, say, replace the ICS version of Activesync & Email (that are bugged with a battery drain) with the JB versions (which are supposed to be fixed).
Can I just:
- download a JB ROM
- take the two apps
- force them into my rooted GS3
- fix the permissions
- and voilà?
Or am I missing something?
Cheers!

Any hint on this would be great
Cheers

why just dont wait for the official release?
it may be 2 week away.

True, but the use of "may" is the reason while I'd like to do that before, if possible

Hi,
i downloaded the new Android 4 Update for
my sony ericsson xperia arc S and ive had nothing but trouble with my phone
since. It freezes all the time, cuts off when im on facebook, wont let me set a facebook status, just stops running etc.
Can anyone help me out
What do i do?
Do i remove it?
HELP PLEASE!!
Thanks
Jacqui

Did you download the alpha-builds of these ROMs? If yes, then that may be the cause of your problems as these alpha-builds are not much stable, buggy of-course and not meant for everyday usage. You should better download a stable release of the ICS ROMs for these devices, when made available by Sony.
Hope that helps, thanks
Everything you just said went straight over my head!! lol
*Technophobe* lol
It came through as a notification to my phone saying new updates available so i downloaded it and had problems ever since. Can it be removed?? x
Well, you could download previous stock rom ( your previous android version ), and try to flash it.

[Q] Installation of Jokersax 0.7.0.0

If I am currently on jokersax beta 0.6.9.2, can I just flash the updated rom over my current version? Or do I have to wipe data and cache in order to flash it? Because I've been thinking about getting around to updating but would rather not lose anything. My other question is if the update to 0.7.0.0 would be worth it. Is there large fixes or just small bug fixes? Thanks ahead of time for your help.

I would not recommend it. Version 7 was made primarily as a base for a Jellybean port that Joker was working on, and appears to use a different GPU driver that fixes browser rotation but also lowers performance. You're better off waiting for the next version.
OK. I've been considering just waiting until a stable release anyway. So, now I think I will. Thanks.

There are two different ROMs:
0.7 - Normal
0.7 - Special
Flash normal one, and everything will be fine.
I saw that. But will that be incrementally better than 0.6.9.2? Or lots of fixes?

As my experiences in these CM9s, the 0.6.9.3 is most stable. But like any other CM9, the camera issue is really big to have been preventing me to install. Additionally, the FingerPrint scanner has never worked, either.
Let's keep waiting till the official ICS will be realeased by Moto

No need to wipe anything. Just install the zip for updates. And yes, it is better.
There are two different roms:
0.7.0.0 is the update
0.7.0.0 Special has Jelly Bean elements. It is a work in progress.
So, once the atrix gets an official ICS update from Motorola, and we get a stable build of CM9, will we have to wait until the official 4.1 update to get a stable release of CM10?

There is no guarantee of an official 4.1. But we will get CM10 in some form.
Will it be stable though if we don't have the 4.1 drivers?

You are confusing stable with compatible. Stable means all of the bugs have been worked out. We will not know if ICS drivers are compatible with JB until they are released.
If ICS drivers are not compatible with JB, major aspects of JB can still be ported to ICS (though it will probably not be the same as pure JB).
OK, thanks! That's just the explanation I needed.
0.7.0.0 issues
I installed from 6.9.1 to 0.7.0.0 last night and would like to report my findings. Let me start by saying I am new to the whole changing ROMs and kernels etc. so I am sure I haven't checked everything just yet. The problems I have found so far are as follows:
1. When using the ICS or ICS+ browser it seems to randomly decide to reset itself back to the initial google page. Iknow I read a post somewhere that reported Opera browser was not working either. Anyone know of a working browser for this release?
2. There is an issue with watching online video. I can watch streams from CNN, YouTube, Fox News just fine. When trying to watch anything on Netflix I only get audio with a black video screen.
3. Battery so far seems to be lasting about the same as 6.9.1 but I probably need more time to make a better evaluation.
4. Camera is working fine. Of course the Video camera is not working.
I am using Apex launcher with Jelly Bean theme and no issues. The only reason I am posting here instead of in the development thread is because I do not have enough posts yet.
does the biometric reader work on the ICS roms for the Atrix?

Follows are outstanding issues over ICS roms which are still in waiting for resolving:
1. Camcoder (video recoder)
2. FingerPrint scanner
3. 2D renderer
4. Some browser problem relating to flash player
5. Crystal Talk (call noise canceller)

[Q] MS Exchange on AOSP/AOKP ROMs

Have been watching the development of JB ROMs for the Rezound, but not making any move, principally because I absolutely have to have functional BT calling or I can't use the phone.
Now that BT calling has apparently been fixed with CM 10.1-based ROM's, I'm discovering that there is apparently a problem with synchronization of Exchange-based accounts on AOSP/AOKP ROMs.
Anyone aware of an AOSP or AOKP ROM that has complete Exchange functionality? Can't make a move until that's working too.
Thanks in advance.
SOLVED: See Post #6. (Known issue with workaround).
I was able to get it to work on Tron, but thats one of the roms that doesnt have the BT fixed yet My suggestion would be maybe check out Touchdown or mobimail on the playstore. Both programs cost something, mobi is cheaper but both programs work great for exchange sync

Same, same. No problem using exchange with any of the JB roms. I think it was the particular exchange servers some people were connecting with that was the problem for the folks who have had issues. Unless your IT folks configured it restrictive you should not experience any issues.

I think it was just that Exchange 2007 servers weren't syncing the contacts.
Newer versions sync everything just fine.
SOLVED - Known issue with simple workaround
So apparently this is a known issue with Exchange and Android Jelly Bean. I finally was able to drill through the Android support sites and found the following link:
https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=35208
In post #17, the instructions are to set up an Exchange account with auto-sync enabled.. Once everything is synced, you can turn off auto-sync and the synchronization will run fine, it's just getting the data on in the first place.
Once I did so, I had no problems whatsoever getting all Exchange information (we use Exchange 2003) onto my tablet running JB. Now I can take another look at the JB ROMs for the Rezound. :good:

[Q] Back to ICS?

I have 2 Motorola Droid Razr Maxx phones.
After it updated OTA to ICS - I Rooted and life was good
After it updated OTA to JB - I lost root and life sucks
At the time of Root - my primary reason was for WiFi tether.
After the the OTA JB update - my wifi tether app stopped working and that was disappointing but I also have noticed other issues.
I also use app organizer for grouping similar apps - those will no longer launch as they did in the past. When I go to All Apps and
launch the camera - only the front facing camera will work.
I HATE Jelly Bean and would love to be able to use RSD Lite to load the ICS sbf and stay with ICS till they can get these issues taken care of.
I looked at the Tutorial of How to revert back to ICS from JB - but that appears to be referring to the early leaked version and assumed that you made your backup as you should.
Other post state that you cant go back to stock ICS period.
I really don't want to flash a ICS rom on the JB o/s - I would like to get rid of JB and go back to ICS completely.
Sorry this was long winded.
Is there a way to do what I wanted to do - or should I just dump both phones in the storm drain and get lost phone replacements?
And yes - I know the replacements would have JB on them - but I could take them back to my service provider and gripe about the unmodified phone.
My camera and auto app organizer work fine. I would reflash jb if I were you. And no you can't go back to ICS.... Trying will just put you in a bootloop, and you would have to flash jb anyways
I think mattlgrof made a jb utility for this, or you can follow one of the tutorials. Full file, not the updates.

[Q] KitKat or Gingerbread - Frustrated Xperia U owner

Hi all, I am currently running a custom lightweight JellyBean ROM on my Xperia U after having used the official ICS update and it making my phone unusable (thanks Sony!)
The phone runs okay 50% of the time on JB, but the rest of the time I get horrendous lag and apps hanging. I can't even answer the phone often because the phone app hangs and the caller has hung up by the time the phone becomes responsive again. Also it seems the longer I have a ROM installed for the slower it gets. And when it is running well I can never type a text at full speed anyway as the auto correct gets confused and goes crazy.
Enough is enough, I need a ROM that actually is usable in day to day life, from what I can see I have two choices, either I go back to Gingerbread and accept that I wont get the modern apps/features/smoothness that comes with Android 4+ or I switch to Kitkat which has supposedly been designed to run well on 512MB devices like the Xperia U.
The apps I use frequently are:
- Opera mini
- Whatsapp
The apps I use occasionally are:
- Camera + album
- Walkman
- Facebook
- Kindle
- Youtube
- Google maps
- Google now (mainly just the reminders, although it is so slow now i tend not to bother now)
- Twitter
What are peoples experiences with Gingerbread vs KitKat for the Xperia U? Which is faster and less prone to hangs? Will Gingerbread run all the apps I currently use? Is there any issue with downgrading to Gingerbread after running JB?
I am really inexperienced when it comes to flashing ROM's so I only want to do this once and get it right
Thanks in advance!

As I can see you are not heavy user. Both Android version will do just fine. But both had their pros and cons. For example GB will be very lightweight and very stable (almost no bugs) but it is very old. Like you already knew not all app support GB anymore so you will have better stability in trade for compatibility. On KK otherwise will be supported by almost every app and have better lib, drivers, eye candy thingy but might had somewhat unsolved bugs. So its up to your choice. But im strongly suggest KK as its now almost bug free.
Btw,dont be afraid to flashing rom. Its really easy. As long as you follow the instruction you will be fine. And maybe someday you will be flashaholic too like me! Lol! ,
