He has the I9100G variant. He should NOT be looking in Original Android Development. Rather, he should be looking in the I9100G Development section.
Kernels/firmwares/ROMs are not compatible between I9100G and I9100.

Huh? You want to update, or you want to root?
To update, download firmware and flash via Odin.

ROOT your phone with this very easy method : forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1501719

A good alternative is the Siyah kernel, which provides root along with a lot of features.
If you don't want to flash a custom kernel, then what jokeys linked is the way

That same method will root any ICS firmware, including 4.0.4

If you need to claim warranty, you will just flash back your original firmware. It takes less than 10 minutes.
Now, you need to remove yellow triangle and reset binary counter after you are rooted.

Rooting can not damage your phone.
You are the only one that can damage your phone if you don't know what you are doing and can't read or ask questions.

Yes, the process is same as for the I9100 version. There are a few threads explaining how to root and flash custom ROMs here. Search and you'll find plenty. If you get stuck somewhere or don't understand, ask here. Good luck
