[Q] Awful sound quality on any ICS Rom - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everyone. Just to let you know, I posted this on the i9000 forums as well as it seems to be non device specific.
Basically, any ICS ROM (I primarily use CM9 and MIUIv4) I use has really awful sound. CM7.2 sounds superb!
How do I describe the sound? Well, it's like there's a tiny thumping mono aural sound when you listen to your music. And when a song hits a high note, everything just goes muffled/crumpled.
Any ideas anyone?
(even on the i9000, with Voodoo sound, does the same effect)

I noticed the same as well with custom ics roms, it must be due to lack of some stuff left behind in gb roms or some compability problems. Hopefully it will be fixed with the official ics.

Cheers for that! I thought i was the only one!

Change the sound setting

If you go to settings>sound in ics there is something called 'Audio effects'. Disable that for your wired earphones and internal speaker and sound would get back to the way it is in gingerbread.
cheers!

Thank for your reply, but alas, I cannot find any setting like you said. There's the DSP effects, but changing any of the settings there (enable/disable) does not help in any way.

VERY annoying on and off sound

The Atrix makes this extremely annoying sound when it's being turned on and off. I went to setting and sound to try to see if there was any options to disable this but I could not find anything. Does anyone know if it's possible?
thanks
Rafa
Gingerblur 3.5 silences the SD mount/amount sound, look under development thread.

GladiAtrix silences the sound as well.

It plays the default notification tone when you mount/unmount the internal SD cards upon boot/shutoff. You can change/silence it in the sound settings. This will change/silence all notifications that use the default sound though. Be aware of that.
Swyped on my rooted and frozen Motorola Olympus.

That doesn't always work. Mine doesn't even play the default notification, but rather a very loud and annoying ring.
I just changed to Gingerblur 3.5 and loving it.
I want to be able to hear notifications, just not SD card mounting/unmounting. The weird thing is that it doesn´t even play the new default notification sound that I´ve set (all other notifications do play the new sound).
After having messed up my Galaxy S I would really like to keep the Atrix clean and original as much as possible...so I´d really like to avoid installing new non official roms and such.

google silent mp3. download it. convert it to .ogg (necessary?) file using a free converter. put silent.ogg in /system/media/audio/notifications. reboot phone. change notification ring tone to silent. done
**must have root access and use something like rootexplorer**

But wouldn´t this disable all my notifications? I would like to disable only sd mounting/unmounting.

[APP] Nook Color Tweaks

Want to try to overclock to 1.3ghz+?
Tired of the speaker not being loud enough?
Tired of hiss and noise with your high sensitivity headphones?
What is this?
I have made a free app in the Android market to tweak a few things I've added to the Nook Color kernel. I hope to add more features to this app later. For now you can adjust:
*CPU speed per stepping. Allows you to overclock as much or as little as you want.
*CPU voltage control. Undervolt for better battery life and/or overvolt for better overclocking.
*Headphone analog gain
*External speaker analog gain
*DAC gain
*USB Host control(requires OC kernel 06/18/11+)
*U-Boot control(courtesy of FatTire)
What can I do with this?
The CPU settings allow you to customize the CPU clock rate. With my overclock kernel the OMAP CPU has 5 OPPs(steppings) available. This app allows you to change the clock rate for each of those OPPs at runtime. Want to try to overclock to 1.3ghz? This app allows you to set the clock rate of your choosing.
You can also use this app to help get rid of hiss and noise on your headphones. I have sensitive headphones and I find the hiss and noise to be downright abnoxious on the Nook Color. With B&N default settings, I can only turn up the "Android media" volume to 25-35% before its too loud. This means the volume difference between the noise floor and the audio is very small which makes the noise noticiable. To partially fix this issue you can either turn down the DAC volume in this app or turn down the headphone analog gain. I prefer to just turn down the headphone analog gain until I can increase the "Android media" volume to 85-90% for comfortable listening levels.
If the external speaker is too quiet you may need to increase the DAC gain. Note that this will also increase the headphone volume so you may need to subsequently decrease the headphone analog gain.
Why use this app and not the other apps in the market?
The primary advantage to using this app versus other more generic apps you might find in the market is that this app makes low level changes in the driver to increase volume. Other apps must make these changes in software to be hardware agnostic. This leads to reduced audio quality versus hardware level changes.
Note: This app requires kernel support. For audio settings you will need a newer 2.6.32 kernel found in CM7 Nightly 88+ or my(Dalingrin) overclock kernel for B&N Froyo 1.2 and CM7.
For CPU settings you will need a 2.6.32 overclocked kernel from 06/09/11 or later.

I love it! It works great so far for external speaker, really helps when in the car with music and in a case watching netflix. Thanks again!
Awesome app Dal, just what I was looking for! Thanks for all your awesome work on the NC.

I am running CM7 5252011 #87 nightly & this app notifies me that the kernel is not compatible & I need a later ver of CM7. What am I doing wrong. BTW thanks for this app. It is a big deal!!!!
Thanks,
kev
Just tried messing with the settings for the headphones, and wow, its so much clearer now! Awesome app, really makes the NC that much better.

two good things happen with this apps:
first, it really reduces hiss in the headphones to levels i cannot hear
second, finally it has a link to donate to the person who contributed the most in making the nook the great device it is now

. . .
Man volume fixes, and usb host coming in at the same time.. you know somthings are brewing when the devs go quite for a while.
I am actually having some problems with this app. I can increase the DAC a little bit, but if I even touch the external speakers option the sound goes out which requires a reboot. I am running nightly 87, with the oc kernal of 5/23. Any ideas? Great app by the way, I can tell from increasing the DAC that it helps a lot.
5 stars for you on the market
of course!

Lol. I thought I was the only one!
So, increase the DAC, then if you open the speaker or headset, the sliders go mute by default. So open it and just slide the sliders over
A bit confusing. I even did a restart because I thought I broke something...
FYI, CM7 nightly 87 does not have kernel support for this app yet. You will need to wait for the next nightly or you can use the OC kernel now.

I am probably missing something really simple, but for the life of me can't figure out how to fix this without a reboot.
I increased the dac slightly, then I increased the external analog gain slightly, and it stopped playing... or i thought it did.
I checked my speaker volume through the main settings and it was all the way up. I checked it in the cm7 settings and it was all the way up. Then i went back into this app and increased the dac about halfway and could hear what was playing, but barely. And when I increased the gain more it did get a bit louder, but not loud enough to listen to from more than a couple inches away.
Story for the trouble, i know I'm just missing something. Thanks for any help

This issue is fixed and the app is updated.
The problem was that the gain settings were defaulting to 0 on first run. This should not require a reboot to fix. All you need to do is turn up the speaker analog gain. I would turn it all the way up. You should have no problem hearing the speaker at this point and it will no longer default to 0 once you adjust the gain.

[Q] Google Now location services issue

I recently did a clean install (full wipe) from CM10 late October release to the stable CM10 that was just released using the latest TWRP (2.3.1) and apps reinstalled with Titanium.
Everything seems to be working, but Google Now has a card that says "Location Services is turned off..." However, all my location services are enabled in the settings menu.
Is anyone else having this issue? Is there any available solution?
I have this issue as well. Not just CM10, but ParanoidAndroid has it as well.
Fixed it!
Updated gapps through the goomanager app and all is right with the world again!
Google now works fine, except for the fact i have to yell for it to understand me. Also when i activate it and it makes that bloop sound its static sounding.

Are you on aosp? Try speaking in a normal tone using the top microphone. As for the notification sound being distorted, its just really loud for some reason. In viperrom (sense based) you can lower the notification volume a bit and distortion goes away. You should be able to independently adjust notification volume for different notifications. I haven't found an equivalent fix in aosp roms yet but its basically the same issue

I'm on cm 10 if i googled right then yes aosp. Viperrom was my previous rom if that tells you anything. And talking into the top mic worked.
Look around the play store and see if you can find an app that has a seperate adjustment for notification volume and use it to tone down google now and the distortion should go away, you should still be able to use global volumes to keep notifications loud. Wish it was baked in like viper rom

Forgive me asking but why would you want to disable it? Having stereo sound in landscape mode is a great feature.

Thing is the earpiece speaker is not the same as the bottom one, and when having stereo ans music/voice/something on different channels it ends up beig really bad... Especially if thay sound changes channels from left to right its a really bad experience... Thats why.

Speaker Volume Boost

Can someone tell me how to increase SPEAKER (not headset) volume on the note 8. Exynos and rooted. Basically how to increase it in mixer gains.
Have you used the "adapt sound" feature in the phone settings? If not, run the adapt sound tutorial, and it should make a noticeable difference. It has for mine and I know others have been pleasantly surprised by doing this also.
I believe the file to edit is /system/vendor/mixer_paths.xml . You'll have to search through many lines to find the relevant sound paths to edit. Most default to like 80, just raise the number up, reboot and test.

Hi,
I didn't do any of that. I simply changed the adapt sound setting.
Please look at the post prior to mine and try using the adapt sound function in your note 8.
Ok Devs could really use your help on this. The path for speaker just ends
