how can i partion and transper file to sd card - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

how can i partition and wat is the safest way to transfet my file to the sd card. i got 2gb sd card.

You can partition with pretty much every recovery software. I think rom-mangaer will even let you do it from a bootet OS.
How you transfer stuff depends on the version of Android you are running.
AFAIK (I'm really not so sure):
Starting with ICS all you need to do is select from the Settings what should be moved to sd.
Before ICS you need to move Apps manually.

Sdcard vs Sdcard2 vs Sd_ext - can this be fixed?

Why did they make the sdcard folder on the internal ram? All my apps write to arcade not ed_ext. Titaniumbackup, Rom manager, browser, you name it. Not to mention a factory wipe in cwm wipes the arcade folder. Am I missing something? Are the devs going to fix this within the Rom?
Great question... This gets on my nerves.... It wasn't this way on my Droid Charge and boom I saw it on my Bionic and now the Rezound...

That is because we are using a Unix file structure. (EXT/2/3/4) Unix (and its derivatives) see drives (USB drives, extra internal drives, SD cards, etc) as folders/files not as devices. There are ways to make these devices appear to show up as a device rather than a folder to the user, but at its core it is still treated as a folder by the kernel.
Desktop linux file structure has all extra storage devices listed as folders in the /media folder of the / (root) partition of the file system.
This structure is also why we have the /system and /data partitions in Android. Its another throw over from the linux base (desktop linux is usually / and /user or /home)
Seems there is no consistancy between OEMs and how they tell the file system to arrange user storage. Some have /SDCARD1 /SDCARD2 and HTC has the external card listed inside the internal memory. It could be that the internal memory is mapped to the /media of regular linux.
/sdcard is a symbolic link (shortcut) for /mnt/sdcard and /sdcard2 is a symlink for /mnt/sdcard/ext_sd
So really they are all the same, just how they choose to link the location is different. Either way, that is just how linux works.

considering the available storage does it really matter where the data goes?
I've just htcdev unlocked my bootloader (which wipes the phone) and it didn't touch the internal sd card or sd card2. Installing a ROM that wipes the device did not either.
So what's the big deal where it goes? I use the internal storage for apps and game data and my 32gb sd card for media and roms.

And all that really means is that, if your application writes data to a different location, you just copy the data to your SD card. Not really a lot of work. Got used to it with my Dell Streak 7...

When I did a few wipes, it did wipe my sdcard folder. That is problem 1. #2 is then I have to config all my apps that default to sdcard. #3 I have to now backup sdcard and sdcard2. #4 wah I don't want change.

That's what I read, so I backed it up, but htcdev didn't wipe it on my device (does a factory reset when unlocking), and it wasn't wiped when I installed chingy's rom (that auto wipes), so I don't know why some are experiencing this.
Not to mention that wiping with amon ra also does not delete the internal sd card.

Titanium backup was mentioned, it's really easy to go into preferences and edit the backup storage location. I used to walk a lot of people through it with the remote unlocking process I would do.

[Q] SD card help

I am new to this and i want to swap my 8gb sd card to a 16 or 32....can anyone tell me the steps on how to go as far as formatting or doing a partition on the card....not sure how and don't want to mess up....thanks
Insert new SD. Go to settings/storage and data/ Press erase on the SD u wish to erase.
Cyanogenmod
OR, you can back up your current sdcard contents into a folder on a computer, turn off phone, insert new sdcard into phone, turn on phone, reconnect to computer. Copy and paste the contents of your sdcard backup folder, minus the main folder name you filed it under, then reboot.
Sent from my MX2 using XDA.
be careful which one you choose to format if doing it from your phones settings
remember
the sdcards are flip flipped if running eclipse
if running cm7 I don't think they are flipped
just backup all files to be safe to your computer

Then i am assuming that i dont have to partition the card or format....just stick it in and boot the phone...I backed up my card to the computer already...

I'm pretty sure it will mess up something

[Q] Internal Storage always running out of space...

Hi,
I have an Xperia Play.
However, I am always running out of space on my internal storage...but I don't know why.
I am rooted with with both Titanium & App2SD installed.
I have very few apps installed and nearly all of them have been moved to my SD card. Yet I only have around 40mb free on my internal storage (from a total of 400mb).
I cannot figure out what is using all of my internal space. I have looked in Titanium at apps using my interal storage and it does not even come close to the 350mb it says I am using.
What could be using all this space and is there any way to find out for sure?
Thanks!
Its the app data and the dalvik cache.
Have u heard of partitioning and s2e?
move app data and dalvik cache to sd ext. that gives u more internal memory.

Hi, I think it's useless to open another thread about same "issue".
I have an Xperia Ray and with only 400Mo in internal storage it's not easy to install all that I want.
I moved all app to SD when possible, made some of them system app with TB, cleaned cache and data when possible.
My Ray (updated to ICS) is rooted and I installed the nAa's CWM 5.0.2.7 "recovery".
What is needed to partioning the sd card ? Is this possible with a locked bootloader ?

U can do it with a locked bootloader. Normally I would advise u use s2e but that wouldn't work on ICS.
Here's how u partition
Backup ur SD card
Boot into recovery
Select advanced
Partition SD card option
Select a size : recommended 1024
Select swap as 0. (32 if gaming)
Reboot
However u will need an app to move the stuff to the partition. Try link2sd
u can partition via recovery or via PC. try ad2sdx by amarullz for sd ext @babylonbwoy, are u wid stock kernel, cos these a2sd things are kernel related. and i dont think stock kernels support it.

Thanks guys.
Right...so I looked into what you were saying.
I ended up partitioning 1GB of my SD card and using it with Link2SD.
Everything was great, it created loads of space on my internal storage.
BUT...then I rebooted my phone.
After a lengthy 5 minutes boot up, I was presented with error upon error. I now have no space on my internal storage and the secondary partition on my SD card is all used up too...I guess Link2SD has somehow failed.
Any ideas?
do one thing just back up all the apps then reboot recovery n flash a stock rom with 2.3.6 xxkph/ddkq6 baseband n dnt use app 2 sd jus use stock app2sd given in manage applications........ good day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ur space will increaseor jus use optimizer 15 tools ..... pro version its an better option!!!!!!!!!!!!!choose what ever u like..................
Sorry for using same thread Red_Kop...

I tried with Rom Manager option "partition sd card", it didn't work. I had choice between 128MB-256MB-512MB (choosed 512) and swap size I choosed 0 and after 32Mb, but none worked. After rebooting everything was the same.
Then I tried rebooting recovery and setting size myself but it didn't work too.
U can't just do that. You have to use an app to move the data to the memory card. Try s2e if ur on gingerbread or link2sd if on ICS
Ok, I'm on ICS, thought that I have to prepare sd card before moving things.
I'm a total noob when it come to android, only few weeks using it.
First partition via clockwork, then install link2sd.
Link2sd will give u a move to SD option

[Q] CWM back up moved to external SD card problem

I have a rooted i9300 running Paranoid Android 4.1.2. My problem is when I use my root file explorer to move my nandroid back up made with rom manager to my external SD card and go look for it when I'm in recovery mode I get the message NO FILE FOUND when I select it. The title of the back up is there but apparently there is no file there!! I'm a touch confused as I have another SD card I keep all my ROMS on just to be safe and they were all moved there using the same root file explorer.
move the whole folder
I'll give it a try, cheers.

FAIL..!!! lol
I moved the whole folder again and it has made no difference!! majorly confused now.
Gonna just try and copy the folder and move the copy to my external SD card. Kind of defeats the purpose of what I was trying to achieve by having all my roms and back ups on my EX SD to keep space on my internal storage lol
Make a backup on Ext SD card then copy previous backup to the same location .
jje
To clear it up, try copying the whole clockworkmod folder, not the whole backup folder
Will give all of the above a try thanks folks.

[Q] Problem with Link2SD

I need a little help i have a problem with Link2SD. I assign 500 mb to ext2 partition, and i have all my apps in the sd card, playstore, facebook and 2 others are linked. Well my problem is that, i have a notification for less space in internal storage :/ when i trying to install some new games ( well i have like 5 games installed already on the sd)... So why i have just 19% free space in internal storage if i have all my apps in sd? PD : see the image and sorry my bad english

Im gonna try that . But i have another issue, why when i install apps automatically install on sd card, i remember in old version of link2sd, new apps are linking to sd and no install on sd. How i can activate that if is possible?

Yeah that is activated at the first but for some reason didn't works, idk but now is working, thanks.
I've been having a similar problem to the OP. Am I right in thinking you move ALL applications to internal storage, even the ones that install to SD card by default and then link them?
I guess there's a problem with your rom or kernel. Who knows

But is this the way to do it? Make sure user apps are are on PHONE before linking?
I'm using LinkSD and it saves me a lot of space in /data.
The way it works :
When installed, an app has three or four parts : the .apk file, the .dex file (in a deodexed ROM), the data folder and, eventually, one or more .so in /data/data/app_folder/lib
- If the app is in internal storage, every parts of it are in /data : .apk in /data/app, .dex in /data/dalvik-cache, data folder and libs in /data/data/name_of_the_app folder
- When the application is moved to sd Card, the .apk file is moved in /mnt/asec/, but the .dex and the data folder remains in internal storage (some applications may also have data in SD Card)
- When the application is linked, the .app, the .dex and the .so files are moved to /data/sdext2 (which is the place where the 2nd partition of the SD Card is mounted), only the data folder (without libs) remains in /data/data (internal storage).
So, the best way to save place in internal storage is to link user applications (no need to move it to internal storage first, it also works when the application is in SD Card).
All my 50 user apps are linked, and I still have 85 Mb free in /data.
