People app missing - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have purchased a cube u30gt android tablet (custom evolution ROM with 4.1.1 loaded onto it) and the "People" app is missing.
The thing is, in /system/app, both contacts.apk and the contact sync service apks are there (even under accounts, if I look at my Google account I can sync my Google contacts), however there is no actual people application.
I can't install a third party app (GO contacts) as it says it is incompatible on the play store.
Not really sure what to do? Anyone had this?

Download Nova launcher. It will have a shortcut in the dock. I'm on v1.7 and I don't have it in my app drawer either.

Did you fix permissions?
,, nvm nit working for me either.
Which version are you using? Beta 1 or alpha 2?
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
i tried both, which were you able to get working?
and by manually pushing it just copy and pasting the apks into /system/app should do it right? rebooting doesnt seem to do much more
i also cleared the data/cache for email.apk, and changed the permissions on all 3 apps too
with beta1, the email app completely disappears, and with aplha2 the icon is there but it FC's when i open
What LCD density are you using? 161 on mine, and it works..
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
im using 161 as well
Well, all I did was push the three apk to system/app and rebooted. It worked..
Sorry..
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
Same here, just put the apk's, rebooted and cleared email app cache. That's worked.
But it's not designed to density like 160 ou 180, some buttons ares too small.
Don't like it does not use push for gmail account, at best it's a 5 minutes check..
When I use the GTab Email it goes to checking incoming servers and goes back to the login screen with a gmail account
Anyone know of or have one that works with exchange? Thanks!

You can use titanium backup to do both of those things. I'm not sure if incoming sms/mms still need stock or not, so make sure you back it up.
it is safe to remove mms.apk from system/ apps and messaging is safe to freeze in titanium
cool guys Thanx.
Would this be a possible solution to not using the stock messenger that is native to GB 2.3.3 as well, if you use a SMS/MMs app from the market ?

yes, i am using handcent after completely removing the stock app, sending and receiving and picture are fine
How do you fully remove the stock messaging app? I installed Handcent and I kept getting notifications from both stock and handcent even after I disabled them for the stock messaging app. There's noway to clear the defaults, if so please advise. Thanks.

Use tb. Open up the app grant it su permissions. Choose back and restore. Find the stock msg app then press on it and choose uninstall. Reboot. Or use root explore. Open the app go to system then choose apps. Mount as r/w "it will be in the top right hand corner" then find the stock msg app and long press on it and choose delete and reboot. Or rename the .apk to .bak so if you ever want it back just rename it back to .apk

For all who would like to have Stock ICS Email with Exchange support, Here you go!
To install the Stock ICS Email app:

if it does still not work, after copying files try change perms to read/write and owner to "root": on my hd2 this resolved the problem

Slightly off topic, but I was digging around for a Sense 4.1 version without forced Exchange ecryption... this looks to be it:

[Q] Stock Jelly Bean SMS app instead of Samsung's ?

Hello,
I was wondering if I could replace Samsung's messaging app with Google's SMS/MMS app or just install Google's. I really prefere Google's one but for some reason I want to keep a Samsung-based ROM (not for Touchwiz launcher, but some apps like the Camera with no shutter lag, S-Memo which I use with my C-Pen,...)
Yes you can, but you need first remove the stock messaging app
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium
How can I replace it with Google's SMS/MMS app ? Where can I download it and will it work with my Touchwiz-based ROM ?
You can pull the apk out of CM10 build.. Push it in system/app after renaming.. But keep in mind your smses will not be threaded..

Try this.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/....com.android.mms&feature=search_result#?t=W10.
I was going to use it myself but decided to stick with handcent which i've been using since GBread.
I expect you can do with this app what i done with handcent, - go into stock app - setting disable notifications, go to app manager the disable the stock message app - setup notifications on new message app and you should be good to go.
The dev also got the google calender etc too.
Hope this helps and works - let us know :good:

I extracted my MMS apk from my cm10 ROM, download it: http://db.tt/kCXioNLo
then use root explorer to copy it to system/app folder.
Then you set the right permissions (all of the first row checked and first of second row only, if in doubt check on the other apps permissions and set the same)
And the look for Semms.apk (or something like this), backup and delete it

I made a flashable cwm package for you .
It does every thing itself.
enjoy,
Thanks all ! But i've no thread in sms/mms, you have an idea ?
You will not get threaded messages in aosp messaging app.. Use the app someone posted from the market.. It is modded to be used in Stock roms
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
Is there really no way to have threads with the original file ? I remember when I got the Galaxy Nexus for a week, I had threads on my SMS/MMS app. With the app on Android Market I'm having issues with LightFlow and the unread count from Apex Launcher doesn't work

I'm currently on the Sprint S3, and I flashed your package. All went well, but when I tried to send a picture message, it force closed the app. When I tried to re-open the thread, it just force closes.
Btw, is there any way to get the little message icon in the lockscreen for this replacement? I miss being able to slide outward on that message icon to be presented with the latest thread.

Thanks for the apps.
How do I install the new launcher. It's a zip file. Do I need to sideload? Do I need root?

Thanks so much. I really like the messenger and gmail apps. I've got no need for inbox now.
I couldn't get the new Google Now launcher to work though, I keep getting Google search FC's. I'm not rooted and so I can't disable Google search before installing the velvet.apk. Any ideas on how I could get it to work?

You can't disable the original apk once you install the new one. I think you have to be rooted for it to work properly

Try install both Velvet.apk and GoogleHome.apk then restart the phone

Works but Google Search stops
Hi,
It works and installed ok for me, but then Google Search stops responding every 10 secs of idle use.
Uninstalled and no issues using stock launcher and Google Search.
I figured out the search force close issue.
You just need to turn off "OK Google" Detection. This shouldn't be a big deal because you have moto voice.
Just swipe left for google now, then go to settings, voice, and turn off "OK Google" detection.
