Thinking of buying Droid RAZR or Droid RAZR MAX - Motorola Droid RAZR

So I am currently eligible to upgrade my phone through Verizon and I have been trying to figure out which phone to buy. I have been using a Droid X for almost 2 years and I absolutely loved it!
I rooted my Droid X shortly after buying it 2 years ago and have learned most everything a rooted user needs to know
(ex. Flashing custom ROM'S, using CWM recovery to create Nandroid backups, using an SBF to return the phone to out of the box software)
and I even learned how to use ADB commands to flash the Motorola stock system images when I had a Motorola XOOM tablet
That being said I really enjoy all things ROOT like over clocking and under volting, and of course flashing custom ROM'S so I guess my question to the Droid RAZR community, many of whom I'm sure are allot like myself would simply be...
Do you REALLY love your Droid RAZR or Droid RAZR MAX??? Is there allot of development out there for this phone? Are there custom ROM'S and the ability to use the Wireless Tether function?
Any advice and personal experiences with this phone would go a huge way toward helping me decide if I want to make the jump or not! Thanks everyone!

I can really recommend the RAZR, I do love my phone! The only thing I regret is not waiting for the MAXX, but on the other hand, no one knew it was coming when i bought my phone!
I bought the RAZR because I wanted a phone that survives daily life. I sail a lot and my phones usually die by moisture... The RAZR isn't water proof, but it has some water resistance. Mine have taken some blows as well and survived.
The only real con I can think about is the locked boot loader, but now that kexec is released it should not be a problem any more :fingers-crossed:

I love my Maxx, great battery life! Since ICS upgrade GPS is not as quick, occasional lag, but far better than any android I've ever owned.
That being said if I were due for upgrade I would probably pick the S3. As long as it wasn't as bad as the previous galaxies I've owned... Love the size and the big screen. But that's just me. The Maxx is awesome though. I would get that rather than the RAZR for the awesome battery life.
Sent from my DROID RAZR using xda app-developers app

If you want all day battery get a maxx, but since the bootloader has only recently been fully bypassed it will be a bit before a completely asop based rom will be at daily driver standards. That being said there are some very nice roms built on the moto kernel. I personally don't think the og razr would be worth it, but the maxx will bring you back to 2 days of battery life you may have once had with an old school dumb phone.

Get the galaxy s 3 or wait for the razr hd.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone, does anyone know if the RAZR HD is supposed to be released soon?
And if so I would imagine it will be some time before a root tool is released along with any other development...
Btw is the bootloader bypassed on the MAXX through some kind of bootstrapper app? similar to the old DROID 2 Bootstrapper program?
Sent from my DROIDX using xda premium

If you want a good wireless radio and good battery life get the RAZR Maxx. If you're into rooting and flashing stuff I don't know if the RAZR series is the best choice.
See what the next Google phone brings, I'm thinking they're going to the GSM carries this time but who knows. I've heard stuff about there may be more than one Google device by different manufacturers. If true Verizon may get another. Or else wait to see what this rumored RAZR HD brings. Then make the decision if you can wait a few months lol.

Can you root a stock Samsung phone now without having to deal with that "Rage against the Cage" nonsense? Tried it once on my wife's Facinate and my anti-virus program wouldn't let Rage run, even when I disabled it. (I know there are ROM's with pre-rooted Kernels you can flash. Just flashed rooted GB 2.3.5 kernel to my Galaxy Tab.)

Yep, I know but it's either buy me a phone now or buy my wife one now, so how do you think that's gonna go? Lol
But all that aside, I checked out the razr today & plan on comparing it to the Rezound next week. My bottom line is reception & my x2 has never failed me where my wife's dinc hasn't been too impressive so htc might not be the best for me.

Rage in the cage new? Never had to use it. First root ever was a one click root i found somewhere. Then i used Odin to flash the stock froyo pre-root. I believe i seen a pre-root GB stock over there, too.
Sent from my DROID X2 using xda premium
I believe "Rage against the Cage" is the exploit scheme that they used on the Samsung one-click boot process. It's been about 6 months since I've tried to root the Facinate, so my memory is sketcy. The upside is that, as you mentioned, there are probably a lot of pre-rooted ROM offerings that can be easily flashed with Heimdall (or Odin, if yer into that).
I agree Sammy makes a good phone. Wife loves her Facinate. Sadly, the Galaxy II never made it to Verizon, but now lots of folks are waiting for the Nexus, which should be out around the end of the month. But I also like the Moto Droid line, now that we've been given some developer attention. The hardware is top notch, and my X2 is running VERY snappy and stable on Moto-Ginger-Funk v7a. I have no reason to want to trade up for a long while yet (unless Google cannot get a handle on their funky Market issue).
Droid Razr looks very sharp (sorry for the pun). I'm a little afraid of the non-removeable battery, though. There are loads of times that I have recoved my X2 from brink of "brickhood" just by pulling the battery and booting into recovery.
I'm not too crazy about the Razr's non-detachable battery. All too often taking the battery out and putting it back in seems to solve a problem, without having that ability on the Razr I'm somewhat concerned.
Odin=Heimdall but for diff operating systems, i believe. When my contract is up, I'm looking into sprint if vzw isn't allowed to launch the SGSII. And no, i have no intentions of turning this thread into a "who it's better sprint or vzw". Carry on w/ upgrade discussion...

I'm pretty sure that the razr has a failsafe two buttons u.press to kill battery connection or something similar
.like a "hard kill" switch.
I am upgrading to the ReZound Monday. There are more reasons not to get the Razr, than there are to get it lol. If you are in an X2 now, you are better off either keeping it and riding out your time, or getting the ReZound/Nexus, at least right now.

What led you to the Rezound? Beats audio or the the display?
Sent from my DROID X2 using xda premium
Well, the headphones alone carry a very hefty price, so getting them "free" for the same price as the other phones is a good incentive(probably why they aren't advertising the phone). I already have the SkullCandy Titan Earbuds, so I really don't NEED the Beats Audio ones. But, the camera's on it are both better. The screen resolution is on par with the nexus on a DX2 size screen. Removable battery, SD storage, unlockable BL, 1.5GHz processor.. Basically, the only "feature" it doesn't carry is the super slim design, and who gives a **** if the phone is lacking in so many other categories? lol.
My moms Stock Inc2 walked all over my X2 with Eclipse before I even put CM7 on it for her! HTC is doing all the right things, even with Sense. Too many people complain about Samsung, and I lived in Korea for 2 years from 07-09, we are getting their leftovers over here(Thanks FCC/FTC, and assholes running patent wars..Apple).
Yeah Im gonna look into adding a line soon. Not sure if I'm going to resound or nexus yet
Rezound looks sick. As does nexus(ICS!) but I can see resound getting ics eventually.
ha. HTC edge I thought about until I saw it was Tegra. I will wait for reviews on that before even trying it lol. This phone has lowered my expectations for tegra devices lol

We did that actually, got the original DX the day they came out. Loved em. I moved from a bb curve and she from a Moto rokr. When the DX gb bugs hit we were offered DX2s and took them since we had the car docks etc. Didn't feel like switching 100 worth of accessories.
AtLemacks right, seems that the Razer with limitations or something without. Hardware is close enough on either one. Why move to another Moto and keep banging your head against the wall like we do daily.

Came from the OG Droid, Droid 2, then this. I can't believe how fast and smooth this thing is. You certainly need to root it as soon as you get it. I had never rooted before this phone, but it took me about a week before I rooted my X2. I was getting frustrated because I felt like it could be a much better phone than it was. After rooting, playing with a few ROMs, I've found that this thing is as amazing as I thought it could be. Definitely the best non-4g phone.
There are much better phone's than the x2 at this point. I'd wait till the Droid 4 or galaxy nexus release.
Feeling Liberated with my X2
And which ones are those??? As stock this phone sucked when i got it, once your rooted rom'd and running the proper scripts and tweaks its amazing and a half, ive used the bionic and the razr.... Not impressed, our development started out super slow but the last two months has been exciting, i wouldn't wait unless you plan on using it straight out of the box
from my X2 roaming the north
Just fyi...RAZR probly gonna get eclipse as well soon
And I would say check out other phones as well.
this phone is solid but it seems its a love it or hate it phone
root is simple. Use petes one.click or zergrush.
Either way. I am pretty sure Verizon extended their return/exchange period for phones bought after november. Believe u can return/exchange unit january or something...not just the 14 day normal period. Just google for more info on that
I just got my droid x2, I'm probably gonna root it later or tomorrow. Its pretty beast!

Yeah, although I do love the hell out of this phone, I'm actually jumping ship today. Heading toward the HTC Rezound. I'm sure it has plenty of its own problems, but there's the hope of an unlocked bootloader soon.
Depending on whether you can get 4G speed where you live/frequent.
If so, then you should probably get a 4G phone.
I still don't understand why Droid Inc 2 is more expensive than x2 (but hoping to find out soon if the deal work out with another member for me to get Droid Inc 2 for my wife.)
That said, at $299, iphone 4S 32GB will hold up value a LOT better than Android phones unless you are dead set on getting an Android or you get good 4G coverage.
i don't understand why would you want to pick Droid x2 coming from motorola atrix
i mean Atrix has the same processor but have 1GB RAM as opposed to 512MB of DX2

Thinking about switching from a Nexus

So I have cracked the screen on my Galaxy Nexus for a second time. I am thinking about getting the razr maxx with the insurance instead of another nexus. I was hoping you all could give me some straight forward feedback about the device. For example, is the battery life really that great? What is development like here on xda. How is the screen? Call clarity and so forth. Thank you all in advance and I appreciate your time for reply.

If you are used to flash junk and customize your phone a lot. Keep your nexus.
Call quality on RAZR/maxx superior. Camera better on RAZR. Battery is outstanding on Maxx.

I have prob 5 friends w modded nexuses. The screen is sharper on the nexus but much easier to read in any kind of light from me on the maxx. The battery if amazing. I can avg 5 hrs screen on time on 3g alone. The camera is actually much better than I originally thought and takes nice pictures very easily but no camera is as fast as the nexus...although I have only seen a stock nexus actually work correctly in the camera Dept.
I miss ics as I have had it on many phones since last oct but the ics leak is good for the RAZR. Still great battery life there. I rooted mine and froze a bunch of apps today that I don't use but I get the same battery life whether I freeze them or not.
One mild complaint that you may have is the RAZR gallery has a terrible pinch zoom bug. I use quickpic for my gallery and froze the stock gallery along w a lot of other stuff.
In the end its a phone. Calls are clear. Reception is great. And it really last all day. No rebooting all the time. No errors. No problems here. I like that.

Having never owned a Nexus I cannot compare the two but can offer my opinions of the MAXX as it compares to many Android phones from my past. The battery is simply amazing, best I could have ever hoped for. I can abuse my phone (granted that term is subjective) throughout the day and still have some juice left when I go to bed at night. My dad only uses his for calls and his lasts 3-4 days consistantly.
The screen is OK. IMO it is far inferior to the GSII that I came from. If you look close enough you can see a slight screen door effect that looks rather grainy. Not as bad as my Photon was, but still not as good of a screen as I have seen in other phones.
Motorola phones are not known for having a big dev community. I saw a lot more dev activity when I had an EVO 4G, EVO 3D and GSII. That may be the deal breaker for you if you are looking for much more than an out of the box experience.
Having said all of that, if you want an extremely solid phone, then the MAXX can deliver that. My experience in reception is much better than anything I ever owned on Sprint or Verizon and I live in an area with great coverage.
Good luck with whatever you choose.

I would love a gsm maxx razr, now it's only 4 USA and I'm out of the borders.
I like razr, gotcha XT910 in december. Bought it because its amazing hardware , but I can't say I'm happy stuck in 2.3.5 GB due locked bl. Others devices in same categorie like SGII, Arc S,, and HTC now are running ICS flawless. To us, we can.only hope get hands on ICS by Q2,, at least.
Also, this is my second razr, and tomorrow I'll leave it to motorola service center again. I've a reason to be disapointed.
Have top phones since 90's and this is far away my best phone ever. Moved to android (came from 'siri' phone) because it's very popular in Brazil, and overall razr design. But you need luck to get a razr with no problem at all, at least, those made here, all LatAm, have to say. I dont see guys from XT912 (you have one right?) complain' about it.
May be too late indeed to motorola unlock bl, SGSIII is on the way with a 1.8 Quade core....
The AdamOtler vdd seems a bit radical, but he made the point. Cannot comment an opinion without reffer to it.

Although the ICS leaks and ROMs are really good. They are not flawless. And won't be until the official release. Even the devs admit that. They all have bugs, albeit very minor bugs.
The big things for me was the HDMI out and the micro sd card. If you get a maxx then you get the awesome battery. While the dev for the phone is low right now, ICS is just around the corner and with a boot workaround here/being worked on I think the razr is the better phone.
both are great devices. so it depends what you want to do with each.
if mods, hacks, roms, flashing are your thing - Galaxy Nexus
limited tinkering - moto razr.
having said that, razr has better battery life. very lightweight. better camera too. plus storage is expandable.
I had the Nexus before I had my Razr Maxx.... Night and day. Radio was garbage in comparison on the Nexus, always bad reception. Battery life is SO much better. Razr feels much more solid. Aside from ICS, the nexus honestly seemed like a piece of junk when I got this.
Is cm9 available yet? Can you even flash custom roms?

Cause no Samsung phone has ever had problems. Give this video a break as Adam has no clue about the razr. He doesnt dev for it so he has no reason to talk ****. Just because they built it this way does not make it any less disposable than other phones. If it breaks and its your fault, then guess what, you fed up. If its not your fault you get a replacement or switch.

Buying Droid Razr, need help!

Hey guys, I am a Nexus S 4G user looking to buy a new (used) phone. I've been researching phones for about a month now, and it eventually came down to the Droid RAZR and the HTC EVO 4G LTE/HTC ONE X. I've decided to go with the RAZR simply because I'm really liking the slimness of it. Now I'm here to ask you guys what issues do I need to know about the RAZR and what should I be wary of when buying it. Also, if there are any ex-Nexus S users in the RAZR community, could you please let me know what you found lacking in the phone compared to the Nexus S? As far as I can see, NFC is the only let down, but I only used it once or twice. Thanks in advance!:good:
Edit: Sorry, just realized I posted in the wrong section. Please forgive my noon self, and move this to the Q&A mods please?

Since you are coming from the nexus s, if you are used to flash roms kernel etc, forget them. The razr have a lockedbootloader and few dev so is a bit a let down from this point of view.
If you don't care about modding then is a really good phone, is slim, very well build with a good reception. Someone say that the wifi is not that great i find it normal. The camera is not as good as many other phone.
Compared to the newest phone (like the htc one x or the galaxy s3) is slower but if you don't play game is still a fast phone.
So to sum up, if you can find it at a good price then is worth buying it (considering it you don't care modding, if you are buying android for modding then i suggest you to forget motorola)

Ow, is it really that bad? I feel so stupid now for not checking the development for the RAZR. Guess I'm just a spoiled Nexus user When you say the camera isn't as good as some phones, how would you compare it to baseline phones such as the iPhone 4S and Galaxy Nexus/S2? Also if you've had any experience with the Nexus S camera, can you please tell me how the RAZR's camera compares to that? Thank you soo much for the help especially for warning me about the boot loader issue though! :banghead:

How is the video recording and image stabilization? I was watching some camera test videos on Youtube, and the RAZR's camera looked really shaky?

I guess u are seing reviews when RAZR had GB? They have improved the camera a lot with ICS update imo
There IS development for the RAZR. Yes, it doesn't have an unlocked bootloader, but KEXEC is in development which will allow loading of new kernels. Currently, it's main issue is that CPU1 stays offline for some reason when booting up modified kernels.
Otherwise, there is a pretty good development community out there. CM9 is out for the RAZR as is MIUI. There are other ROMs as well. Again, it's not like the Galaxy which has an unlocked bootloader, but quality-wise, the phone is awesome. Excellent radios, fast and responsive and just thin like a razor!
If you can, you might want to look at getting the RAZR MAXX. Much better battery life than the Original (OG) RAZR. I have the OG RAZR and I can get pretty good battery life IF I don't play games. But, with some tweaking, I've been able to keep it going all day at work if I limit my use to texting, checking emails and some web surfing.
I suggest you spent a little more to get a Maxx. The extra battery really worth it because LTE is much, much more power hungry than 3G. Here in NJ I saw several listing for Maxx asking 350, and Razr for 275.

Thank you guys for the help! I'll definitely take the MAXX into consideration as battery life is a big point for me. As for the lack of development on the RAZR, I'll keep my Nexus around as a backup phone in case the development gets too slow.
By the way, does the RAZR/MAXX have any known defects or issues that I should check out when buying used?
Thanks again for all the help!

I just bought one used and should have tested the speaker as it was faulty. Swapped it out of my OG Razr though and ordered one on ebay. I got a mint maxx off craigslist for 300 yesterday.

I agree also there is lots of development for the razr locked bootloader or not.

I read your post after buying the phone but your right, I should've tested the speaker. Thank God though everything seems to work perfectly. The closest Maxx was about an hour away , so I settled on the base RAZR in white, mint condition for $250.

Is rooting easy on this phone compared to the Nexus phones? I think I'll play with it for a few days before I root it and flash it to metropcs.

very easy, check out the development section
The RAZR camera isn't that good. It comes out blurry sometimes. Pictures only come out decent in sunlight. And from time to time I experience lag. It's very annoying.
But going to a Motorola I knew I was sacrificing things. Now I got a reliable wireless radio phone and great battery in the RAZR Maxx and ICS, closest to stock ICS that isn't a google phone or a custom rom!
I had a Galaxy S2 on Sprint before this phone. That phone's camera kills the RAZR in video recording and taking still pictures. And I never EVER had lag on the GS2. My big beef with that phone was it had the worst wireless radio on it combined with Sprint's network, sucks.

Post Your RAZR/RAZR Maxx Story.

How did you end up with this phone? What made you choose it? What makes you keep it? Post your story.
I have the Razr Maxx on Verizon Wiress (CDMA). Things I dislike about this phone...
1. The camera, it's no slouch but I got use to the camera on my previous GS2. That has better lense/camera.
2. Slight lag here and there, again I came from a GS2 that used Exynos processor.
3. No HD display BUT I am a big fan of Super Amoled. I just love how the colors pop.
4. Locked boot loaders!! (My Samsung GS2 was so easy to root and flash things on.)
There was even some points I thought of selling my Maxx and getting a GS3. I loved the GS2 but main problem was it had a really horrible wireless radio plus being on Sprint network did not help. I had no intentions in getting a Razr when I walked into the Verizon store. I already liked Samsung, I just needed better service. Had my mind on the Galaxy Nexus. But I loved the build of the slim RAZR. Tried it for a week or so, Ioved it. Got signal in areas I never did with other phones being on other networks. Battery was a big problem, like most Android phones, I said eff it and got the Maxx.
The radio and battery life make up for all the things I dislike about this phone. I just got a case from Seidio and that gives me the new phone feel again lol. I gave up things getting this phone but I've also gained things so it balances out

had thunderbolt. wanted battery. got maxx
Had rezound. Battery was terrible. Got talked out of getting a new phone (within 14 days) and instead got the extended battery. Still awful battery, and other problems. Got replacement rezound. That was even worse. Finally they let me exchange, and I got the maxx because I wanted the battery.

Well kholk and mbm got the CDMA Razrs to boot properly with both cores! So its only a matter of time until custom kernels come along with roms.

3 weeks and all is working perfect on ice w/SlimROM. 4 months total. All in all it's been a very good phone the whole time . I do recommend getting an otter box or something if you are very active I broke my screen and it cost me .
also have working Linux 12.04 and all open office full programs
forget to charge one nite and it still runs all day the next...
64 gb SD card - 500hrs video and 1000 songs and still 18 gb. (I have 5 Linux distros for testing also -10gb)
12 games
off air GPS maps for all of northern NY plus Google maps off air redundant
scanner
free tether
Had galaxy nexus loved everything except the poor signal and battery life. RAZR Maxx fixed both problems. I'm keeping it unless the RAZR HD battery can compete with it.

Former fascinate and Charge owner. Upgrade became available before the unlimited ban when upgrading. Got the maxx after checking all phones in the Verizon store and it being the most polished feeling.
Happy ever since. Screen and audio playback are not the best but everything else kicks ass.
Can't imagine having a lesser phone and there is no desire to deviate from stock.

Verizon offered me a maxx after 12 defective razrs, wish I would have asked for a s3.

I have previously owned: Samsung galaxy s, zte blade, HTC desire z. I wanted something with awesome built quality and as thin and light as possible. The chosen one was the RAZR only missing now for me is custom kernel plox

The main criteria to buy a phone, is it has to be able to works as a phone. Period. Previously, I have RAZR V3xx, before changed to other Nokia phones and the Nexus One. V3xx was a very good phone which did a very good job as a phone; makes and receives calls. It also a very good HSDPA 3G "modem", USB tethered to laptop. Now I have RAZR XT910... and it just as good as the V3xx. I don't care how many cores, benchmark's scores or frames speed, but, if it cannot functioning as a proper phone, than it is worthless to me.
Thank you.

Holy crap batman. That's almost hard to believe. If it were a Nexus, I would believe that.
After my 3rd Galaxy Nexus, I got fed up with it. Purchased a Razr. The Maxx was then Released. Sold Razr. Bought Maxx. Friend was selling his Razr dirt cheap. So I bought it. And now have two Razr's.

I switched to a razr maxx after three galaxy nexus bad phones. The razr Maxx does everything I need it to do.
Development is heating up on it too.
I have a galaxy s3 also but I'm finding that I keep going to the razr when I NEED my phone to just Work....like when I'm at work.
I go back to the gs3 because the screen is STUNNINGLY BEAUTIFUL. The razr just works better all the time.

But its a lot better than i had expected, and obviously i needed the battery life with work so that's why I'm here

When I used a gnex I thought the two phones performed similarly although the Motorola came out on top when you needed data or GPS or phone signal or battery.

i was thinking moving from SGS2 ....to SGS3 .. not , after seeing both , i got razr maxx cuz of battery , and IT'S NOT a faulty or lazy phone

Yeah, only plus with the gnex was the ton of dev support and tweaking. But I'm pretty happy with my maxx, the battery and signal blow the gnex away.
