I have a HTC Evo 4G LTE that has been rooted, for some reason I can not get the tether to work, I was able to get the Hot-spot activated, and it works flawlessly. But I can not get the WiFi tether to work. The profile is set to generic, and the build, prop is set to false.
Are you using this app to do it?
WiFi Tether for Root Users
If not, you may want to give it a try. It works for my phone.
Use WiFi tether for rooted uses and do what the app dev tell you to use in the description

I am using WiFi tether for root, that is why I am stumped...I am stuck with S-on, if that has anything to do with it.
I don't know much, but I know I'm S-ON as well and have no problems with it.
Don't u have to set profile to ics or something like that? Try it.

have tried
Auto
Generic
Generic ICS/JB (wlan0)
Generic ICS/JB (wlan1)
I then tried it with WiFi encryption, then I turned it off.
It shows a SSID and asks for key, but always fails.
Have you tried everything the dev says to use for HTC phones?
It sounds like no. There are other things your missing

WiFi-driver reload: make sure this is checked
MSS clamping: make sure this is checked
Routing Fix: I usually have it checked, but lately when I've connected to LTE I have to uncheck this to get it to pass along the internet connection.
Hope this helps.

I have rooted my phone via zedomax and that worked great. I have SU, etc..
I downloaded WiFi tether but can't get it to work. I have tried a Ubuntu machine and my HP Touchpad, neither will connect. The Linux box would show the connection but it showed an icon I am not familiar with, maybe AdHoc not sure.
The touchpad didn't see the connection at all?
Any thoughts or suggestions?
make sure u have ur device set under generic ics in the wifi tether pref
For wifi tether to work:
Set profile to generic ICS (as Tickleme said)
Set MSS Clamping
Set routing fix
That'll get you running.
Mine works just fine without either mss clamping or routing fix. Only thing I had to do was set it to Generic ICS.
If you just changed your SSID or passphrase, make sure you "Reinstall binaries/config" under the options menu or whatever it's called.

Mine didn't, nor did it work without those on the Evo3D...but if it works for you guys without MSS/Routing that's cool.

When I do this i get a error message that says it couldn't write a file or something, dam.. will uninstall and try again.. leave as is... Ok no re-install and just changed it like you said and just connected while writing this message.
works great thanks for the help...
Slower than crap on 3G at my house, but at least it works.. Again thanks guys..
So what is the minimum to get wifi tether to work? HTC dev unlock? Root? Or both?

Yea just root via the zedomax method and then install wifi tether, setup like mentioned in this thread and your good to go.
took all of 5 mins to root, the phone has to reboot 3 times and your done. Simple, if done with linux even easier... don't have to mess with drivers and all that crap..
Chow..
Anyone that use it having problems with it connecting to there transformer, my tab sees it but wont connect, just says saved...anyone else?

i had issues trying to get devices to connect to the phone when using version 3 of wifi tether... so i scoured the net and found an .apk for version 2.x and now everything is working fine... that was an OG evo not an LTE though

Make sure you are using this tether app. Like others have said, make sure you go into settings> Generic ICS for profile.
If that alone doesn't fix it, try checking 'MMS clamping' and 'Routing fix'. Make sure to also 'forget' the access point on your transformer before trying to connect again. This works awesome for me and my Nexus 7.

Just remembered that another issue I had, not sure if it would pertain to you, was the wireless adapter my computer was using. My laptop would connect without issue but PC that was using an 802.11N adapter wouldn't pick up my phone. Issue went away when I changed it for a G adapter.
Can someone please help with WiFi tether. I have a EVO LTE rooted. I have the settings set as generic ics I have mms clapping and routing fix checked. I changed the ssid and the password. I get the computers to connect but with no internet I tryed using the WiFi fix to use the stock hotspot and I got it to work for about 10 min. I also tryed Firefox still no luck please help. from my EVO using xda premium
Make sure your settings are setup like this:
Change Device-Profile: Generic ICS
Change Setup-Method: Netd (master)
none of these things worked
Is your transformer rooted with the ad hoc fix baked in. I believe it's a problem on the tablets side not the LTE.

I've unlocked my Rezound and rooted it. I checked the root and its says "congratulations, you are rooted" With that said... I downloaded WiFi Tehter (just as I did with my last HTC Incredible) and tried to hook up my Motorola Xoom. The Xoom won't recognized the Rezounds Wifi but my wife's laptop will but then it won't get online. As a matter of fact, my daughter's IPhone can recognize the Rezound tether and get online.
I have tried every combination of settings to no avail and am willing to try ANYTHING at this point.
make sure you're set to 'Netd (master)' and not ad-hoc. Android devices don't like connecting to ad-hoc networks.

are you sure you have root? http://download.chainfire.eu/204/SuperSU/CWM-SuperSU-v0.94.zip flash this in custom recovery (i use amonRa) itll give you root on a stock or any rom. open superSU and update binary
download "root checker" from the app store (burrow apps)
start it up grant permission and be sure your rooted.
Also is your mobile data on? i know it sounds funny but i made this mistake before. no mobile data no tether but you can still connect.
also you need to be unlocked, on a custom recovery, and rooted.. i personally use an uninstaller to uninstall to the stock mobile hotspot app.. ive heard it interferes with the rooted apps.
Ok, Here's where I'm at:
On my HTC Rezound -
Device Profile - HTC Rezound (LTE/CDMA/GSM)
Change Start Up Method - Netd (master)
Wifi Encryption - not checked
Change Channel - on channel 1 (2412 MHz)
Wifi-driver reload is checked
Enable Access-Control is not checked
Keep Alive is not checked
Shutdown Timer is not checked
Idle Shutdown is not checked
Quota Shutdown Limit is not checked
Lan-Network - 192.168.2.0/24
MSS Clamping is not checked
Routing Fix is checked
Preferred DNS - 8.8.8.8
Alt DNS - 8.8.4.4
And yes, the phone is rooted. I checked with the Root Checker program
On the Xoom:
Wifi is on
Advenced settings-
Network Notification - not checked
Keep Wifi on during sleep - Always
Wi-Fi Frequency band - Auto
Mac address - 40:fc:89:f6:b2:09
IP Address - 192.168.1.105
Bluetooth is off
The Xoom still doesn't see the Rezound.
Laptop doesn't see it either
So aggrevating!
I use the following settings on rezound for all roms. In WiFi tether:
#device profile: rezound
#set up: auto
#ssid: change it
#channel: 11
#routing fix: checked
I don't have internet so I actually use this app constantly for x-box live. WiFi tether has worked on every Rom I've flashed(all of them!). With the exception of aokp 1.1 which had WiFi issues

I've heard that Foxfi doesn't work with the Droid DNA--is there any way to use turn this device into a mobile hotspot without having it pre-included in my data plan?
This is my first smartphone; I've been using my Nexus 7 and a dumb phone for the past few months now, and I felt I should upgrade to a smartphone since I'm not living on campus anymore. This seems like a great phone in and of itself, but I'd still like the option to tether my tablet. Any suggestions?
As long as you are rooted, you can use WiFi Tether For Root Users (yellow WiFi bars picture) and it will tether just fine. You won't need to include tethering in a data plan to use it.

I am seeing exactly the same issue. Numerous errors on starting, unable to tether. Or more precisely, other devices can see the hotspot and tether to it, but do not get Internet access.
My main problem is that my phone will show up as a device instead of a router (like it used to on my OG Incredible), thus not allowing other phones or tablets to connect to it because they don't see the connection. Laptops work find though. I use "wireless tether for root users" with the green signal symbol and not the newer version because the new one doesn't show the data speeds and total data used in the app.
I am using the latest yellow version and both my Galaxy Note and Lenovo laptop tether to it but do not get Internet access.
sorry for jumping on old post.
Just wondering. On my moto droidbrazr maxxbi did an sqlight hack to bypass the entitlement check and was able to use the stock hotspot app even though i was on unlimited data. Would a similar work around work for dna?

LOL for anyone still using the DNA, I just installed NuSense Six and FoxFi works perfectly - not ad-hoc, full infrastructure mode, so it will work with devices other than PCs.

I'm using all stock roms (I was s-off and flashed stock recovery, grabbed OTAs, flashed TWRP recovery). I installed SuperSU & BusyBox than was able to tether using Barnacle Wifi Tether~ it gave me an error for adhoc but I was able to click associate and use my 4g on an iPad.(Also checked external IPs & ran speedtests to confirm it was using 4G)
Not working for me. It gets stuck at "please wait while starting". And just spins. I can back out of it but nothing good happens.
My phone is unlocked with HTC Dev, rooted from TWRP, S-on. I went to JB with the OTA so I'm stuck with S-on unless someone finds an exploit for Hboot 2.09.
The 2 biggest reasons I root are for ad blocking and tethering. That's why I never found it that important to S-off. Well now neither of them work.
Its seems as tho Sprint/HTC locked down anything writing to the system. Tethering doesn't work, ad blocking host updates or updating binaries in SuperSU or superuser or busybox all cause hard reboots.
I'm really frustrated at the moment. I realize that it's mostly my own fault for taking the OTA, but I'm just looking for work arounds that don't involve paying Sprint more money...

You got to reroot! Not as bad as it sounds - because I was able to do it.
Unlock the bootloader:
http://htcdev.com/bootloader/
Install TWRP:
http://teamw.in/project/twrp2/98
Use the "Download - Fastboot Method"
If you need ADB and Fastboot, download from here http://d-h.st/iqA
Now install root by installing http://download.chainfire.eu/298/SuperSU/CWM-SuperSU-v0.99.zip using TWRP.
Disclaimer. Not responsible if your phone blows up. It worked for me, and worked well.
Good Luck!!!!
If you are using WiFi tether app, you need to go into settings and set the profile to Generic ICS, enable MSS Clamping and the routing fix, and you should be good to go.
Edit: There have also been reports that the s-off exploits for Hboot 1.15 & 1.19 work with the 2.19 Hboot (look for the thread in the dev forum)., so you may want to look into that also.

Ok, try this for setting:
Change Device-Profile:
Generic ICS/JB (wlan0)
Change Setup-Method:
Netd-Ndc (master)
WiFi-driver reload
checked
MSS clamping
checked
Routing Fix
checked
Also need to turn off connection manager (this enables WIFI from time to time to see if WIFI is avaialbe, and if it is turns off mobile network). If you don't, once it cylcles on the WIFI the tethering app will respond as WTH happened. Do this in Settings -> Mobile Data -> Automatic Connection, uncheck Connection Optimizer.
Note: Had connection issues until changed to Netd-Ndc (master)
I know this thread is about wifi tethering... but what about USB tethering? I can't seem to find a darn thing about being able/unable to USB tether...
I've tried many different versions.
The closest I've got to working is on 3.2-beta2-modv5 (wifi tether trevE Mod)
It shows internet access on my computer, but doesn't load anything. If I look at my Evo, I see the 3G constantly going in and out. I have done all these settings:
Generic ICS/JB (wlan0)
Netd-Ndc (master)
Send Netd Max Client Cmd (if I disable this it will not even say internet access)
WiFi-driver reload
MSS clamping
Routing Fix
Connection Optimizer OFF
I have tried with different SSIDs, encryptions, etc.
Every time I start tethering it says TETHERING STARTED WITH ERRORS, SHOW LOG. So I do this and can see everything failing to start. Any help?
