*SOLVED* USB to PC w/ various ROMs - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

I have a question that deals with the way the phone connects to the PC (Windows 7) via USB. I'll try to describe it as best I can.
With the stock ROM, or anything based off of a stock ROM (GB or ICS); I can plug the USB cable b/w my phone and PC and not have to tap the notification and "turn on USB storage". The PC will see the phone as a "device"; meaning, you can see it in My Computer as a 'phone', then double click, then see SDcard and Phone (something to that effect).
The above also works perfectly in JB ROMs that I've tried. Most specifically, CM10 unnoficial, and CM10 Nightly.
For some reason, this does not work in CM9. Not through the previous unofficials, the nightlies, RCs, and subsequent 9.0.0 and 9.1.0 releases.
IDK if this is "my" problem, but it's a pretty nice feature to not have to bother with the notification tapping. Mainly because it breaks SDcard dependent widgets and such while you're in USB Storage mode.
Anyone else?

I'd suggest going into settings>storage and pressing menu and tapping usb computer connection. Here, you can choose between 3 modes: MTP, PTP and mass storage. You are probably on the MTP or PTP, and in Computer your phone must show up with a mp3 player like icon, right? I'm on jellybean and just assuming the usb computer connection settings are in the same place.

[Q] Can't Access Tablet through my computer after Vegan-Tab 5.1.1

I loaded Vegan-tab 5.1.1 and everything is working great, except that i can't see my tablet as an external device anymore while connected by usb to my computer. I do see the sdcard & sdcard2 files from the ifilemanager.
Is there a way to fix this?
I noticed something similar and it turned out to be me. I was expecting the "USB connected" message when I plugged it in. However, when I looked at the top bar, there it said "USB". I pulled down the bar, clicked on USB CONNECTED and I was back in business.
Possible for you as well? Something to check...
Me too
I'm having a similar problem with Vegan 5.1. The tab is connecting and I'll go to select "Turn on File Sharing" or whatever the option is and everything will appear hunkydory. However, if I attempt to transfer a file it will hang up for a while (on the PC side) and then eventually the connection will be broken. If I look, there is a file of the right size on the internal sd, but I'm not willing to fool around with them in case they're corrupted.
Somebody please help! I've had a good search and can't find any recent posts on this topic.
My trouble shooting advice :
A) 5.1.1 has a pull down menu that you have to "active USB"
B) I installed android USB drivers on my PC just in-case so i wouldn't have connection issues.
C)May need a "powered" USB port like Portable HDD .. example: (MAC keyboard USB port isn't powered).
Vegan by default after install leaves system in USB debugging mode. Go into setup/ applications/development and turn it off.

Thanks. That solved it.

Not Recognized By Computer

My device isn't recognized by my computer. Is the tablet supposed to prompt me to enable USB storage when it's plugged into a computer?
Nope...For me it just shows up in my computer..a new window doesnt pop up like it regularly does for new items inserted.
win xp didn't worked for me either - win 7 worked without any problems
I guess I'm not clear. When I had a rooted NOOKcolor (replaced stock ROM with a Gingerbread one), on the device itself would be a prompt to enable USB storage when it was plugged into a computer. This would appear in the notification bar at the bottom. Once I clicked yes/ok on the device, only then would it appear on my computer as a storage device. This doesn't happen with the Sony. I'm using a Mac.
So, those with a computer that recognizes the device, are you prompted on the tablet to enable USB storage or does it simply appear on your computer as a storage device with no prompting? Again, I'm not referring to your computer prompting you to do anything. I don't have another Honeycomb tablet to answer my own question. Thanks.
Honeycomb doesn't support USB mass storage. It uses MTP instead so things may work
a bit different than you expect. If you're on a Mac you need to download the Android file transfer program from google.

Thanks so much for the quick reply! Now I can stop scratching my head in bewilderment. Now I recall reading about Android file transfer program. I think I downloaded it months ago.
Yep, just checked my Downloads folder. It's been sitting here, never installed.

ICS and USB debug/Mass storage

With the new ICS firmware (and I don't know if its all ICS) you need to turn off debug in order to use Mass Storage.
Is there any application or other way around this? It gets a little annoying to always have to do this.
Titanium backup needs debugging on for some of my apps and if not using mass storage mode the phone connects via MTP mode which is very slow
I would willingly pay for an app/widget that does the following
Once pressed turns off debug and asks you to plug in USB for mass storage.
Prior to disconnecting the USB cable you select to disconnect which then un-mounts the storage and then turns back on debug
figure should be easy to make for some dev out there
Anyone have an idea on this?
Guess no one out there has an idea
Hmm, for me the only difference running ICS and checking or unchecking dev option/USB debugging is whether or not I can manually unmount the phone in Windows, it always connects as a media device and I have no otion to turn that off.
Mediamonkey takes forever when my phone is connected as MTP (say 15 minutes to build the sync list?), and the only real option to use it to send fresh music to my phone WAS connecting it as mass storage (15 SECONDS for the sync list).
So I would really really appreciate any hints on how to get my S2 to connect as mass storage. It's the official ROM rooted using Chainfires respective kernel.

Or at least an app that selects and deselects the option automatically as I mention above.
Sure a dev somewhere can make lots of money for an app like this

Thanks for the info but I already knew this. Also you didnt need all these steps in gingerbread and previous software versions.
Also for people using USB debug this must be turned off before being able o do all of the above.
Im just saying an app can be made that does all of this with one click
Well, get onboard here, test and say if it works.
I have USB Debugging always on and I am currently running LP7 version of ICS.
When I plug in the the phone I get the Media Device (MTP) coming up on the phone - which is ticked.
In Windows Explorer (Windows XP) just below Control Panel (in the folders window) is a +GT-I9100. Clicking on the + I see a subfolder +Phone The items in this folder are the Internal SD of the phone.
From this I just drag and drop. I haven't noticed any difference in speed between this new way and the old method in Gingerbread.

Try transferring a large file you will see the difference between transfer speeds in MTP mode and mass storage.
Also with MTP you can only do one thing at a time. For example let's say you are transferring files. While doing that you want to erase something else. It will wait for the original transfer to finish prior to starting

But will this work even with debug on?
Yes. As mentioned in the linked post:
- connect cable
- classic "usb connected" notification appears in notification bar with option to do usb mount
- adb available.
Doesn't like my Mac either
When connecting my galaxy s2, I get the attached error.

MTP wont even work properly on my Windows 7 machine. It refuses to update the explorer process as long as the phone is plugged in. So navigating the phone means a lot of plugging and unplugging to get anything out of it.
Changing to UMS means my 2 devices (Internal SD and External SD) are visisble right away, but sadly are not displayed with any storage bars underneath . As a result I can't access them anyway and the second my phone goes to standby it stops the "process".
So any help or hints how to get my damned phone to actually work and show the storage bars underneath is most welcomed.

[Q] Is there any ROM/APP wich enables UMS on this smartphone?

Hi,
MTP and PTP are full of problems... so I want to have the old reliable USB Massive Storage (UMS) enabled in this phone, Is there any ROM with this feature?
I'm with stock and I would prefer not to unlock the boot loader unless I can get that feature with a ROM.
I tried this app with no success
I want any PC to detect my phone as a USB flashdrive containing only the sdcard files, not any partitions like system or data or such.
thanks

Nope. UMS is dead as far as Google is concerned.
what do you mean by that? I know some ICS ROMs with UMS (but for other phones) so it's no dead dead dead and doing a quick search there are some people using ums un Jelly bean
What I mean is, UMS support isn't the way google wants people to do things.
It's a kludge when google wants phone memory not be segmented for apps vs media and such.
I've found MTP works very well on this phone compared to others i've owned.
It's a partitioning issue on any phone that comes with ICS natively.
mmm may be I wasn't clear about that, sorry,
I only want any PC to detect my phone as a USB flashdrive containing only the sdcard files, not any partitions like system or data or such.
And we are saying it isn't going to happen. What trouble are you having with mtp? Maybe we can help.
Ok, thanks, my problem is the following
I have 3 windows machines and in all of them the following happened
> I connected the LGOG to the pc and selected the pc software option in the phone
> Installed the LG software
> The LG software Drive disappeared from "Computer" (as expected I suppose)
> The phone-drive never showed in Computer
> I unplugged the phone and plugged again and selected MTP
> The phone-drive never showed in Computer either
In one of the PCs I got an error while installing the MTP driver, don't know how to solve that, if I try to reinstall the LG software the LG software driver disappears
Also I can't copy files to my phone if I don´t have Administrative access to the PC... that's main the reason I want UMS
Uh oh.
So, if I understand correctly, I'm going to need to install CM in order to use my phone as a thumbdrive.
While I have no problems using MTP, the INSANELY SLOW TRANSFERS are basically going to force me to find another solution.
Great phone, but 2MB/sec on a standard USB 2.0 port just isn't working.
More research, it appears that I'll need to install an FTP server on my phone, or use a wireless data sharing app (sadly not possible in my case as my wireless network is firewall-external to my wired one).

[Q] Dirty Unicorns Mass Storage problem

I cant post in the Dirty Unicorns thread so I am posting here. People said that USB Mass Storage is working flawlessly in dirty unicorns. However, I still can't get it to show up at all. I'm wondering what steps I should take? Right now all I know is when I connect it via usb, on the phone, a USB Mass Storage page opens up for a split second, then closes. I have it enabled in the storage settings. Any help with this?
Have you tried different ports on the PC, different cords, and/or a different PC to make sure it's not something with the rom itself since it is working for others? If there's not a notification when it's plugged in to tell you it's connected, then it's probably one of those 3 things. Does MTP work? Also, open the Device Manager and check the driver status when you plug it in to see if the PC does recognize it and whether or not it is trying to load the correct drivers.

I'm getting the error "This device cannot start. (Code 10)" in device manager. Also, it first shows up as drive L with a yellow triangle, but then it disappears after a little while.
Also, I am able to successfully connect it, get the drivers automatically, and keep the USB Mass storage page open when using a different computer. So it's got to be something with my computer right now. Think you could walk me through what to do with the drivers and whatnot?
