I use chomp sms as my messaging app on eclipse 2.3 and it gets killed in the background. Can I make chomp a system app to avoid it being killed?

Yes you can make almost any app a system app. Just move the apk to system/app and change permissions to rw/r/r and reboot. Although this in and of itself will not stop chompsms from being killed or pulled out of memory.

That, and I think if you make the app a system app, you wont get updates. Or at least update notifications. i dont know how that works.

an app like chomp sms should still get updated as a system app with no issues. as for it getting killed...do you have a task killer installed? The system is killing the process to free up ram for the rest of the system to use.
You can keep the app in memory and it shouldnt be canceled ever if you do this for your chomp process
Code:
sys.keep_app_1=com.p1.chompsms-1
should be the line to add to your build prop to keep it in memory. however it will always jack the memory it need but should never close
I don't have a task killer but I am running v6 supercharger

Hello guys! I'm currently using Handcent but I just don't like how the default Messaging app is always on. Is it possible to remove the default since I have Handcent or it is needed for Handcent to work? Handcent is not a standalone messaging app?
If your talking about the notification on the status bar, you can turn the stock messaging app's notifications off by pressing menu in the app>settings>scroll down to notification settings and uncheck the first option.
If you want to uninstall the stock completely, you would have to do it through titanium backup.
Hope that helps!

Uhm, I'm not bothered by the double notifications but the stock messaging app. Without that, would I still be able to use the sms feature only using Handcent? Or is it dependent on the stock?
Why not make a nandroid and play with it? You can remove it with root explorer but the best way to do it would be to use adb commands while booted into recovery. More than likely, if you remove it with an app like root explorer or titanium, the app will be running at the time of removal and screw things up.
If you remove the app and something is screwed up, just restore the nandroid.
I'd be interested to know if things still work properly as i use handcent too.

Oh, good idea! I'll try it but can you teach me how to use adb to remove it? I have adb working, I just need the commands xD
Oh ok, that makes htc sense.
The best and easiest way to do that from your phone would be to download titanium backup off the market, which can uninstall stock apps like the messenger.
Just tried it, still recieving texts from handcent only, but you might still want to do a nand just in case.

I'm not a power adb user myself but a quick google search will tell you what you need to know. Here's a page I found - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=706074
Go into a command prompt and enter:
cd (tools directory of sdk)
adb remount
adb shell rm (folder that app is in)/(app name)
exit

So I'm trying to figure out the point to the blacklist feature in Handcent. I know it hides all the texts that are on the list, but they are still accessible via the stock messaging app no problem. Is there a way to stop the stock app from showing particular messages, or disable the stock app all together? Just seems like a pointless feature to have if it is bypassed so easily.

I wouldn't advise that. Isn't the stock MMS app tied into the framework? I believe this would kill your ability to send and receive messages.
I think the blacklist is to block who ever u want from texting you.

This is pretty much what it does .. I have done it.

I always wondered if that was possible without breaking something....
With launcher pro you can hide it in the hidden apps list..or on adw just put it on your homescreen then.hold it then edit then change the name and change the icon then take off notifications

Launcher Pro allows you to hide applications and in the stock messaging app go to settings and disable navigation notifications. Problem solved.
Edit: I missed the post above mine.

if u are looking just to hide dome text so your partner wont find out....you need to download sms guard on the market ,install and go to settings and put a password do no one wont getting......that works perfectly....now the only problem is if the sent u a multimedia message it wont block ....hope it hepls
I've tried the blacklist from handcent myself but really didn't like it nor worked for me that well. Now I'm using blaclkist app from the market. Much better than the blacklist that comes in handcent.

i get every text at least twice! any ideas on what is going on? on rooted gb from p3droid. anybody else experiencing problems? thanks
I've had similar problems with my X2 on Froyo but only when communicating with my friends on AT&T (they both had iPhones).
It's not unique to the rooted GB. It is a bug that, for whatever reason carried over from Froyo.
They said the bug was patched in gingerbread. Are you sure you're not taking about getting the same text in 2 different apps? Meaning in stock texting app and a 3rd party app. If so then you need to disable notification in the stock texting app.

I have not had 1 duplicated message since i went to GB (Now on rooted GB).. So check your settings, make sure you disabled the stock text app if your using an SMS program.

Not nativly no. SMS/MMS does not work over wifi, regardless of the source phones type...( iMessage will do this yes, but iMessage is not using SMS/MMS even though they do it from the same app. it's handleted totally diffrent, and it's only iphone to iphone, there is no option to get an imessage on an android, it's apple gear only).
I froze the legacy sms app with BT.
Then loaded gosms. No pictures would pass thru. Even after making adjustments in advanced.

I've always been scared to delete stock messaging app
Any phone speed, ram, or other benefit obtained from this?
I normally just leave it alone, and disable notifications.
You can even hide the app in the app drawer if you're using Go Launcher, other launchers may have this ability as well.
I was wanting to know the way to replace the system phone/contacts with rocketdial? I've tried this before,by deleting system phone and contacts thru TB but got tons of FCs.

you dont need to delete anything install app and then change phone and contact shortcuts icons in your home screen by the ones of the app
howver you can use system contacts if you want and after install the app if you go to a contact and press to make a call it will ask you wich dialer you want to use by definition you mark the box and choose app dialer and thats it...
i try it, before post sorry for my english but dont delete those apps from system the solution is right there.
just press thanks if i help you
Hi...
I am currently using Neko95 GingerSnap, and, since i tried MIUI, i loved the UI, i use ExDialer.
When i missed a call, the notification only disappear (automatic) if i open the stock app.
I Linked exdialer to ex partition of sd, rebooted and converted to sys app (Link2SD).
You still have the stock apps, but they are small...
The next thing that i will try, after consult the community if it works, is to, before flash, exchange the stock apps for the ones that i will use... (if someone that reads this can tell, please...)
With best regards, Shaib Lftg
Are you talking about extracting the rom than replace the phone and contacts apk with the dialer and contacts you plan on using ie...rocket dial and renaming it to phone.apk and vice versa

I don't like the idea of having multiple applications which have the same function on my phone... ie...
Stock browser-dolphin browser, stock mms-go SMS pro..you get the picture...
