I got myself an Otterbox Defender case a few days ago and because the phone seemed so much heavier with it on I decided to do 2 drop tests on the floor from hip height to see how it behaves. There was no damage to the case and the phone also seemed to be in one piece. An hour later, when I was browsing the web, I noticed a lot of dead pixels, mostly clusters in the corners of the screen but also scattered along the left side. The next day, however, I saw that the dead pixels that were more widely spaced had disappeared, and only the tighter-packed ones remained. Now there are even fewer, and my guess is that they'll all be gone by the end of the week.
Has anyone else had this happen to their phones? Is there a Defender owner out there who managed to drop the phone from a height greater than hip hight without breaking the phone? I'd like to know what the limits are on this case, because the extra weight doesn't seem to help the phone at all, even with the extra protection.
I have dropped mine from the roof of my two story house onto the driveway 3 times and nothing happened.... if you're screen has dead pixels then you had issues before you put the case on

No defender protection and i dropt the streak atleast 5 times on the concrete, i only have a small silicone case protection. And i'm very lucky no screen damage.
Dropped mine from the dinnertable with no protection. Ended up with the right bottom corner totally dead. It started creeping up on the right side during the next few weeks. Until it went totally dead. Had to buy a new one (100$).

Worst thing about the defender case is that stupid belt clip, if a piece of clothing gets stuck in with the phone as you click it in, your phone will fall out, i have lost count of how many times mine has fallen from the belt clip onto concrete, phone is fine though, case has one small dent, but again, its fine and still going strong. Unlike the PDMI port.

i figure its only a matter of time before i knock it on the floor. do the skins give any kind of protection or is it too thin? would i be better off getting a leather case that could absorb some of the impact? i wish someone would make an otterbox type skin. something that covers back and the sides and has a lip that sticks up higher than the screen so if its dropped it wont land on the screen.
The skins are fairly thin but will protect from small dings and bumps. Against any kind of drop the cases will provide much better protection.
The skins only help with scratches and small item dings, not dropping the device.
For that kind of protection buy a case with decent edge protection.
Alright thanks. I couldn't tell what thickness they are from the picture. Probably get a skin later on down the road.
dont worry that much, the device is very well built and it will resist 1.2 m falls or so. Get a skin or something for the scratchs and you will be fine as long as the falls are not higher than a desk.
I have dropped it, and the only thing that happens is that the plastic cover gets some hits.

Ya my daughter has dropped mine several times. (13 months old) Have yet to have any issues with it. (No case, just skin on the back)
Nice. Glad to here its pretty well built. I kinda would like a skin with a semi thick rubbery material.
My daughter dropped mine a few times too from about 3ft - no problems with the gtab. Thought I was going to kill her at first, though.
Dropped mine this morning from about 3ft, no problems.
Well that is good to know. I'm hoping that it isn't wasn't too delicate. Man, I still can't wait to get mine.
I dropped mine it didn't make it.
I fell asleep with mine in my lap sitting on the couch with a blanket tossed over me. I woke up and started to get up and the tab slide down the blanket and landed screen down. The tablet was in a folio type case one used for the larger kindle.
I Only explain this the circumstances to show this was not a direct drop to the floor.
The the tablet showed no damage, but the screen is now in operative. When booted the screen is nothing but white. I think that a silicone case may have deflected enough of the shock that the tablet may have survived. The Kindle case only has the loops on the corners to absorb any impact from this type of fall. In any case, they are fragile. I was very surprised that my tablet was in operative after this incident. The tablet still can be accessed with NVflash. and appears to be booting, but nothing on the screen but white. Replacement on the way from the woot deal.
After this incident, I think it will be very hard to protect a tablet from a direct drop to the floor above 1 or 2 feet.
Are you referring to a Kindle DX case? I'm thinking about picking a Kindle case up for my g tablet as well but don't know how it fits.
Yes thats the one. It fits pretty well, but I don't feel it offers much in the way of protection. Even when closed the tablet is very close to the edge of the case.

Clattered to the floor
Yes mine clattered to the floor, but it turned on and worked ok, after a panic attack..
Seems well made, but don't think it would survive a concrete fall as well.
I did notice that when the battery is near discharged, and it won't stay turned on, it seems to corrupt the sdcard if I keep fooling with it to get it to stay on.
I had to reformat to get the framework to stop crashing et.al.. and I did restore from clockwork..

I'm pretty sure he meant that he bought one from the recent Woot! sale as a replacement.
I droped mine...
I dropped mine and broke the glass LCD cover. The screen works fine and the touch works all over the screen, but there are several cracks with some bits missing. Is there a replacement available anywhere?
Dont drop your gtab while its plugged in... i dropped mine not even 3 feet off the side of my bed... onto my carpet floor, landed right on the charger port, and Completly broke it off! u can see it here...

I'm not telling you to go out and try this because its dangerous but I dropped my tablet while it was in a swiss gear slip cover kinda thing and I am glad I made a custom aluminium case on the tablet because I had dropped it 18ft LOL...It's 100% working no scratches no joke
I am a musician and I use my G-tab for music charts. I dropped mine from the music stand twice this past weekend during Easter services and no problems whatwoever. I carry it around in a padded backpack and the other day I forgot it was in there and threw it in the back of my truck with my guitars and other gear. I heard a "crunch" sound and I thought, "oh crap". When I checked it it was all good. That's good enough for me.
Maybe a weird query but I'd like to know this
Mine is 5 weeks old and miraculously I haven't dropped it yet and in last 5 years this is the only phone which I haven't dropped. But the scaring part is, how will it manage if I really do drop it? So if anyone of you has this experience please share with us.
Regards.
lols. in the last 5 years, this is the ONLY phone i've managed to drop! And i've dropped it TWICE!!! OMG i was/am pissed about it.
But luckily, my friend wants to buy it off me, and now I can pick up a brand new one. HAHAHA.
Hopefully, I will not ever drop the new one.
Once. It was in it's case......
three times. perfectly working, one of them it was a crash with my moto. I get injuried but my phone is perfect
I never drop my phone's. Maybe I dropped my last HTC Desire once in a year.. but it was not serious or anything. People need to be carefull with their stuff
so... so many time. At least 15, 10 onto pavment/gravel. The screen was almost flawless throughout all this but a few weeks ago I was drunk and put the phone in my key pocket. Few deep scratches now. Body has some marks but not bad for how many times its fallen, I think its weight helps.
No case/protector.
Very happy. All my phones get beat up, this seems to last better than most.
Just once. Yesterday. I lost my breath. Until I found out nothing was damaged
Haha. Dropped it twice 3 days ago. My heart skipped a beat or two when I heard it smash to the floor. Must've hurt the poor thing so bad haha.
I seriously had a dream where my phone fell apart. One of those dream you don't realise its a dream you know..
the first time i dropped it scuffed the plastic on the corner a bit, the second - two light scratches on the screen. pretty annoying after having had 3 iphones and managing to never damage them!
I've never dropped a mobile in 14 years and I'm not planning on starting with that one
I don't bother with screen protectors and the likes either, haven't managed to scratch a screen yet.

Knocked mine off a shelf onto a wooden floor yesterday. Dropped about 4 feet. Back popped off but...
After turning it over very slowly i was relieved to see the screen in tact.
Phew. No case either. May have to buy carpets for my house to protect the sii from further incidents! (or just be more careful)

Ok i have also a Zenus Withe Cover
Galaxy S1 also droped few time but same nothing happen...
Cheers
I dropped mine once when i was drunk and somehow the back cover and battery went flying of. Put it back together and turned back on all good.
But have no idea how that back cover came off? I have trouble taking it off my self.

I dropped the phone out of my pocket while running and the phone slid on the floor, back cover popped off and battery came out. No damage to the phone and it was working fine. I had the phone in my pocket next to my keys another day and figured it was alright since the screen is supposed to be protected by Gorilla glass. When I took my phone back out I had a few noticeable scratches in the glass. I thought that was impossible with the Gorilla glass and haven't put the phone back in the same pocket with my keys ever since.

Gorilla Glass is Scratch Resistant not Scratch Proof. So using it without a screen protector is a bad idea.
Anyway, I have feeling relieved now, after seeing so may of you had already dropped it but nothing happened. So I guess the build quality is good, reliable, that's another very good side of this beauty.

PS- Keep them coming.
Dropped it twice, both times during exams. It helped quite a lot passing 'em tho

Only have it a few days and im ultra careful with it i nearly always keep it in my pocket when im out and about and when im at home i make sure to keep it out of the way from my 2 year old son who picks up anything and everything
so i just joined the team...
i dropped it just now,,,its been 5 mins(the late is due to my paralyzed condition when i dropped it) .... Its totally fine,,,working just perfect,,,looking as awesome as it was,,,
just when u look very closely at the screen(light coming from right direction),u ll notice a 2 mm long scratch on the screen which is like thinner than the thinnest hair,,,,it nothing ....but i am just too angry at myself
I've dropped it a few times with cases on and no scratches on anything, a few weeks ago I was in the basement at work and was using the flashlight, this time without a case and somehow slipped out of my hands and got a 1mm scratch to the plastic bezel on the side was extremely angry at myself!! But it's not bad you can't really notice it unless you look very closely.
Anyone seen any drop test on the net? Havent been able to find a video of it.
The closest to a drop test that i found is this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zv4Llv3UedY
A dude tries to scratch its screen using random tools.
But I guess some of you have dropped your phone already, so how did it go and did you use any protection around the phone? I've read that our Ace isnt that sustainable.
i have dropped mine several times, from 3FT to 5FT high, i use a protective back case (the perforated one which clips from the back) and a normal screen protector.
The phone is still alive, no scratches. I manage to destroy 2 protective back case though due to the drops.
The reason i bought this perforated back case is that the chrome finish in the galaxy Ace is sensitive since it is a chrome finish over a plastic base, not a chrome finish over metal.
Did you ever drop it with the screen faced down(using the screen protector)?
That would be interesting to hear about.
I personally use/like the transparent silicone one, since it's bump resistance, good grip as well!

Did the drop with the screen facing down. No problem because the silicone case i am using protrudes, creating a buffer between the screen and the case.
I dropped my phone face down too from about waist height, since I'm using a silicone case and screenprotector, no traces of damage at all.
Dropped my SGA a while ago, face down. Aint quite sure about the height but I guess its around 3ft.. or less maybe lol.
I can say there aint any damage done to the phone.
I did perform some quick-test (camera, microphone, loudspeaker etc.) after the drop just to make it sure, and all of them works just fine.
p.s. I was using Capdase soft case at the time I dropped it, so I think even though I dropped it face-down, there wasn't actually a contact between the screen and the floor.

I really don't like those silicone case since it makes the SGA thicker, the perforated back panel protector are just right, it protrudes as well in front, but not as deep as the silicone cases.
And as for dropping it face down, the thing is most of the time it drops on its corner (due to one side being heavier). Making it fall face down will be coming from a small height not giving enough air time for the phone to actually rotate on its heaviest side
I dropped mine from around just ~10cm or so, while using VillianROM, and it hit the ground on it's top corner, and my network and sound stopped working when I checked my phone after a while. After that, none of the Froyo firmwares would work when I tried flashing. Only Gingerbreads would, but with no network and sound. Totally weird of a situation.
I accidentally dropped it twice. First one around 2 ft high. Produced no scratches. Second one was worse as it was higher around 5-6 ft high and ground was wet at around 10mm deep. Back was all wet. Good thing only the back cover was scratched. I had it air cooled for a night and turned out pretty well. No hardware/software issues covered after the accident. It must be noted too that I had no accessories attached back then!
i have 2 so small scartch eve invisible in sometimes can i use the phone without screen protector, i have te vietnam version
I can tell you it's not the drop, it's the force it hits the floor with, believe me: I can tell.

Yup i remember that I dropped it a month ago when I was filming my brother's son's insane activities....
He was just one and a half years old...
I was filming him on my bed and he came near the ace and smacked it.. LOL...
Ace went right down flat on the face...
That was my first and only drop.... But nothing happened no scratches...
I just use a scratch guard..

Good luck trying to find someone who'll do that, but have a look around this forum/use search etc. there are plenty of people posting their dropage stories.
Unfortunately what I have gathered from the majority of these is that the plastic material is very brittle and some users have been posting pictures of the cap being cracks with gaps or hairline cracks from often pretty minor drops.
The white variant also is not fully white plastic, but black-painted-white plastic so when this is chipped the black shows through.
So just don't drop it!
hello
I did not test it
but I think that XS is extremely weak
It's doesn't have gorilla so should be breakable as ice
plastic is eco green and get glossy as soon as it possible so it isn't soft plastic so breakable too I think
I don't wish You all to drop it
I will do a video if I get enough donations for the repairs or for a new device (almost for a new device at least)
not scientific, but I have dropped mine from a meter onto hard wooden floor, it landed screen down, my heart stopped, but it survived .
The bottom cover is the only weak part of the SXS, the rest of the phone will survive the drop.

I would be willing to drop mine, if people donated at least 2 third of the cost of the phone, or I would be happy to donate to someone who is also willing...
kinda get scared at the thought dropping it deliberately
Have dropped mine twice onto asphalt, from the heights of 1.5 meters and about 1 meter. Only a couple on tiny scratches on the screen, the phone still works OK. Lucky me...
Dropped some times and nothing i think i was Lucky once screen down on the asphalt

mine is fallen from my car door on the wet asphalt, then it bounced in a water puddle, i took it up immediatly, throwing a lot of blasphemies, but no severe damages at all... just a little in the top corner, but is not even visible after a few days... just a waste of blasphemies... but i think i was very lucky
I take it asphalt is the stuff they use on roads, tarmac?
lucky
Not later than 5 mins, my phone fell flat back from three feet. And its okay. No problems yet.
What's your drop story?
Sent from my GT-I9205 using xda app-developers app
Ive droped it about 5 times now, the first without the case on and all it did was chip some chrome off but ill replace middle housing when it comes to selling so no panic there the other 4 times were onto concrete screen down in a thin side case, and not a scratch yet
I dropped my mega a few times with no problem ,once I accidentally caught my headphone cord with my hand then it went flying to the ground like a sling shot and survived. A few days ago though, I dropped it face down on bitumen and the screen cracked from the top corner going down towards the middle. It was still functional straight after, but about half an hour later I couldn't swipe to unlock it. It was a rainy day so I'm thinking maybe water seeped in and stopped it working? Either way I think it's a write off
The cover I had covered the corners and sides, but had openings for the front top and bottom portions. I think if I had a cover that covered all sides completely it may of survived.
I think it all comes down to luck and how the phone lands, if you have a cover and it hits a corner that is protected it should survive.
