Someone started a thread a while back on this, but I wanted to start my own hoping that this issue may get a little more attention, and keep a detailed thread for future use. I love this phone, but this is the one significant issue that I have.
I spend most of my day and evening on wifi since I have it available at work and home. I've noticed since day one that I wasn't getting my notifications on time specifically in Gtalk, and still exists to this day after the latest 2.13 OTA update. When I hear my phone get a notification, I will check it, and the notification has a timestamp in the notification drop down, so I know I got it just then, but then in gtalk the timestamp on my message is several minutes earlier. I have seen it as much as 45 minutes late. It is very noticeable whenever I turn on the screen that instantly I get a notification. The issue exists with all push notifications. Gmail notifications will arrive late as well as exchange notifications. I've seen reports about it happening with WhatsApp messenger. It has been theorized on other forums that the wifi radio goes too deep into sleep for the notification to wake the phone up.
My wifi policy is set to stay on always. I've tried factory resetting. I know that the wifi stays connected while it is sleeping and is not disconnecting. I've tried multiple wireless networks. I've tried 2.4ghz vs 5ghz. It has nothing to do with smart sync disabling data as this is happening during the day and not between the hours of 12am and 7am.
I have done a lot of searching on Google about this issue, and I've determined that it is an issue with the entire line of HTC One series phones. People have reported this issue on the One X (International and ATT), the One S, Incredible 4g, and of course many other reports on the Evo LTE.

Please feel free to test this yourself. Connect to wifi, turn your screen off, send yourself a gtalk message from a separate account. If it comes in on time, wait about a minute and try again. If it doesn't come in, wait as long as you can stand or just turn the screen on, and see your notification come in. I tested this on a friend's Evo LTE who insisted he wasn't having the issue, and I was able to duplicate this. It seems that most people must not use wifi as much as I do, and maybe just haven't noticed.
Current solutions / workarounds:
Turn on Best Wifi Performance in the advanced wifi settings - kills battery
The best solution that someone found on another forum was to use an app called REGPON Wifi KeepAlive. It is an app that puts a partial wakelock on the phone in order to keep it from going into deep sleep. Check both boxes included in the app. The first starts the process, and the second will turn it off when wifi is disconnected. This doesn't have a huge effect on battery as I thought it would since it is putting a wakelock on the phone. I actually get very good battery life still, and can last through the day with heavy usage. It's nowhere near the significant drain that you get with the Best Wifi Performance option.

That could be considered a workaround, and I have tried it, but wifi doesn't go to sleep until after several minutes after you turn the screen off when you use that setting. Then of course mobile data kicks in and notifications come in on time.

Recently I disabled the best wi-fi performance option (I enabled it on accident while messing around with settings on launch day) which obviously increased my battery life dramatically by actually allowing my phone to go into deep sleep. But now I hit a new issue.
Before I go on, I want to state that I DID apply the SmartSync fix and that my data IS working while my phone is in deep sleep.
New emails I receive with Gmail app do not get pushed to my phone as they should. They are anywhere from 5-15 minutes late if they even show up at all. If I happen to turn my screen on, automatically I get the notification of new emails.
Is anyone else having this issue with Gmail or any other app? I find it strange that while I have data (wi-fi/3g) enabled and working with the screen off, emails still come in delayed.
Any help would be appreciated. I have searched around and most of the answers I came up with (regarding HTC devices like the One X) had to do with SmartSync messing up the connection or someone not having the notifications enabled. I'm at a loss 0.0
EDIT: I tested this with Google Talk had my main account up in Gmail and in another browser windows my other Gmail account. Added both of them, talked to my self, if my device screen was off, I would either get it 1-2 minutes late or not at all. Once I turned my screen back on, the notifications poured in. I also tried the same scenario with my main Gmail account logged off (in case it was canceling out the messages to my phone, which it wasn't) and I had the same outcome. I edited the title to reflect that this isn't a Gmail only issue.
EDIT 2: Did more tests, I tried turning Wi-Fi off completely and running the same tests as above to my surprise everything worked as expected. I initially thought it might be because of my 5Ghz Wi-Fi band, so I tried it all again on my 2.4Ghz channel -- had the same problems as before. Somehow the issue pertains to your screen being off and Wi-Fi being on.
EDIT 3: I just tried streaming Pandora and shutting the screen off (maybe WiFi WAS somehow shutting off) Pandora kept playing no problem. I messaged myself on Talk, got the notification right away. This is very bizarre 0.0 But it might confirm this only happens when the phone is in deep sleep mode... Still doesn't answer why it doesn't happen on 3G or why notifications sometimes still come through.
EDIT 4: Still no fix but I have discovered that for some reason if the screen is off ANY data doesn't go through. Let me explain better:
If I have some thing like Pandora running then it will continue to run once I shut my screen off. But if WiFi isn't being used and I turn my screen off and then lets say I try to connect to it with Cerberus or ping it from my PC or something it will not even though the router reports it as connected.

This is interesting...maybe the wifi performance toggle is associated to the smartsync, and all?.....I will say that with it unchecked I am getting some really really good battery life here compared to previous phones....but I also notice at times when emails are not pushed till I wake the screen during the day....Also the fact my wifi doesn't automatically reconnect to my house when I get back from work till I wake the screen...little things like that...
Havent messed with the best performance setting but will try it today now...

Have it, and it is unchecked. That's the weird thing, wi fi doesn't actually turn all the way off because SOMETIMES I do get the push notifications (late, however).

what is the smart sync fix?
When I installed this app, my cpu reduction and frame rate reduction was enabled. Does that mean this is standard with this phone. Does using this app to disable those setting improve the performance?
Issue continued overnight, tried various other things and nothing seems to fix it. I want to get my notifications but I don't want to destroy my battery life xD is anyone else having this issue?

I have the same problem on my 2nd evo as well after returning the 1st. Going to try a rom with the fix tomorrow. I'll report back with what I find. Hopefully I won't have to return again....

It's definitely not a hardware problem because if that was the case the phone wouldn't work with wi fi almost at all. My wi-fi connection is rock solid even when the screen is off, just for some reason it won't notify I have the messages until the screen gets turned on.
I did some tests on my gf's stock phone and she's having the same issues, I told her to do some tests on her parents wi-fi when she goes there. I wonder if sgt slaughter has any news.
Btw if you definitely need them on time and need to be on wi fi but don't care about battery life that much just enable best wi fi performance.

Actually more like a Smart Sync break ... The built in settings/app put your data connections to sleep when your phone goes to deep sleep; this is done to save battery when phone not in use for extended period.
Some folks hate losing the data connections so a flashable "fix" is available for the "problem" ... Look around; you'll find it

its a sense problem, there's a thread in the one x forums on how to fix it. I'll post when I get home if I can find it. it shuts down to a 'power save' mode after a while plus after midnight or 11 or something.
Just wanted to update that I installed a custom rom that contains the WiFi fix mentioned and although my WiFi doesn't seem to drop how it did before (at least after one day) my notifications are anywhere between 4-10 minutes late on average through WiFi. This seems to be across the board for Exchange email, Gmail & Google Voice.

Yes my setup also had the wi-fi fix, I can even see my phone connected to the router when the screen is off, the connection is strong.
I had a suspicion it was probably the basic transfer rate of the browser and for some reason I could not adjust this on my fancy 100 dollar router with dd-wrt flashed onto it so I set up a repeater with my older router on stock settings. It seems like the notifications are coming through better now (albeit not instantly) but at least I don't have to turn my screen on every time. It might be a placebo effect or just luck (because at times it does work even with my other router).
EDIT: Ignore the italicized sentence. It was just a stroke of luck, the problem came back.

I am rooted and running Fresh Evo LTE 5.1.1 which has the "Disabled SmartSync deep sleep mode" already installed. I also leave my WiFi off (for the same reason as the OP outlines - messages are just plain not arriving or if they do it's after I turn the screen on).
I use gtalk as my primary form of communication on my phone and what seems to be happening is messages from my two closest friends are never arriving. It's hit or miss but seems to be ~45mins after my screen turns off that they send a message and I never get it. One is on Sprint on my family plan and the other is on Verizon. The weird thing is that if I look in my gmail > conversations the messages aren't there either.
I haven't been able to verify any SMS messages that I haven't received but I have noticed that my email notifications seemed a bit wonky but this issue may be fixed with changing my "push" hours (which is retarded to have factory set to only push email between 8am - 8pm).
Question for the smart kids in the class: When does the phone reach "deep sleep"? Is it around ~45mins after the screen turns off?

I also have the dual core mod which I BELIEVE sets my deep sleep right away which is probably why I have the problem more often than you do. One question just so we can start gathering facts large scale, if you're on 3G do you have the problem still? What if you turn 'best wi-fi performance'?

Correct - I have this problem on 3G. I run on only 3G because the problem is more prevalent on WiFi, but still very common on only 3G.
Currently I have "best wifi performance" turned off. Do you want me to test with it on or off?

On. When I turn it on it pretty much eliminates the issue, it acts just like 3G. But for me 3G is almost perfect (a couple seconds of delay but I can deal with that). Remember though that if you leave it ticked on it will destroy your battery life.
WiFi is on, best WiFi performance is on as well.. I'll run it this way a couple of days and see if I can replicate the problem.
I just wanted to say that I've been having similar issues. I have tried turning on best wifi performance, but I don't think that is helping. For one thing, when I have that turned on, when I wake the phone, the wifi is often times not connected, and it shows 3G. Then it will connect to wifi shortly after I wake the phone. On top of that, I'm still not getting notifications on time. I was notified of an email when I woke the phone that actually came in 10 minutes earlier. Hopefully HTC/Sprint is aware and working on a fix.

Sorry if this has done the rounds, but im new to forumn and none of the posts seem to have all my symtpoms.
I bought a few weeks ago a tf201. everything is great, bar two points.
1) - battery life is emmense when docked on the keyboard and in use, and undocked. BUT when i leave it docked it just seems to refuse to go to sleep and manages to chew up just about all the battery overnight. from the battery monitor in settings the wifi and screen stay on overnight so it loose 5-10% or so an hour.. not great
2) not sure if this is related to the above, but again only happens when docked. if it does go to sleep (i think). when i come to wake it, nothing happens. in the end i have to press the power and volume buttons to reset it, then it wakes back up again. interestingly when its dones this it doesnt appear to have lost much battery charge.
So it seems that either it doesnt want to sleep, or if it sleeps, it sleeps a little too much.
im running the latest OTA ICS update as of last week and havent got that much installed widget wise etc. Ive been pouring over the forums for people with similar issues and the nearest i can find is people recomending using flight mode apps to keep the tablet from completely sleeping. this sort of works but the batteries then need charging every 2-3 days, which is better than daily but not great.
any pearls of wisdom as this for me is ruining an otherwise great device...

Maybe try setting WiFi on sleep to never under the advanced WiFi settings?

Email Accounts set to "push"
Email clients connecting to Exchange usually have a "push" option that continuously syncs with the mail server. Some of them (like Touch down which is what I use) allow you to set off work times when it won't be polling the server so I set it not to poll between 10:00 PM and 6:00 AM.
Also, look at the accounts and sync area in the settings and see what other stuff is being synced. I had no idea until I looked just now how much stuff is getting synced under my gmail account. It's not just mail and calendars like I thought but also a long list of other things.
Then, looking under "Backup and Restore" in the settings, I'm seeing that it's doing a "backup app data, wifi passwords, and other data to google servers". I'm assuming that means all my mail etc. When I first set up the tablet a couple of days ago I noticed that all the wifi connections from my Droid 3 showed up so that was the first time I realized that my phone must be doing this too...
That's a security issue in that by my employer's rules, sensitive company data isn't supposed to be stored on other people's servers so my exchange data really should not be backed up to google. And it doesn't make any sense to do that anyway. If one of my devices dies and gets replaced, when I configure the account on the new device, all the data will sync from the mail server anyway.
The point being that I'm discovering that there is a huge amount of stuff being synced from my android devices that I didn't even realize. That could be bogging down the network (particularly if on a connection that's slow to begin with) and also causing battery drain.
I'm experimenting with turning a lot of stuff off that I don't figure I need - both for the phone and the tablet - to see what difference it makes.

The exchange DATA, meaning your actual mail does not get backed up explicitly anywhere with vanilla Asus/Google ICS Firmware. What it backs up is account settings, and the options you select. Backing up all your mail would be awesome (under the right circumstances, such as when you need that backed up, and some apps will do so, but generally for a fee.
OP, for battery concerns, make sure that in settings, Asus Customized setting that "Mobile Dock Battery Saving and "Disconnect network during sleep are both selected. The latter option stops most or all synching when sleeping.
It sounds like you are experiencing SOD (Sleep of Death) not quite as horrible as it sounds, but if you have to push power button and or/ Power + Volume for 8-10 seconds to get it bac, does it then vibrate and reboot, or just come back to the Homescreen imediately? If it's the first one, look up SOD. I have had only ONE event since .28 rolled, and before that perhaps a dozen on .21, and NONE before that so it's due to SOME recent changes to firmware, at least in my case. Interestingly, I was able to stop it on .21 by disabling the same option we have been discussing. The two battery savers in Asus customized, and WiFi, Advanced: "Keep WiFi on during sleep" (You have to hit the "three dot" menu and choose advanced from WiFi Settings.
Anyway keep us posted, and let me know if you have SOD, or just a deep sleep - if you REALLY want to know how often and how long your tablet spends in deep sleep get CPU Spy (no root require, I believe) and after several hours, it will let you know what the CPU has been doing, for what percent of that time. it is an AWESOME way to determine how much deep sleep you are experiencing with the device.
My battery is not really satisfying.. though i uses only 15% brightness, it sucks up my battery like hell... 10% decrease in an hour... is this normal?

I think i was get the dreaded sleep of death as when it slept to 'wake' it i had to reboot it.
Ive run through all the suggestions here + a few suggestions from the forumns, setting wifi to never, adjusting the dock battery usage, checking my sync options. In sheer frustration i removed all widgets and removed a shed load of apps (both pre-installed and ones that i had installed) installed cpu spy and tested. interesting that it appears to be ok now. charged the dock and transformer up on firday night and its still got juice today, all be it that dock is nearly dead and the transformer has 80%+ thats with 2-3hrs use every day and obviously sleeping...
one thing i did note. when it was docked before and 'sleeping' in the transformer battery was low it would charge for long period when it was sleeping? it doesnt seem to do that now. if the transformer battery is low and i sleep it. the power \ charge light stays on for 10-15 mnutes then goes off.. so def looks like something was keepign it awake.
go to settings/asus customized settings and scroll down to battery saving and check the two power saving settings :good:
Ok, this is a good one. I'm a long time root/custom ROM person all the way back to a G2 and I've not heard of something like this happening.
I got an S5. Rooted it successfully with Chainfire's auto root as described here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qaZvtGwwziQ
All was well, but after a few days, I began to notice that I was not getting notifications regularly. After quite a bit of testing, and here is where it gets really weird, I was able to determine that:
-When the phone is connected to wifi and
-When the screen is off
I get NO notifications. Gmail, Facebook, Life360, nothing comes through. I've waited 5+ minutes to get one, and nothing. Then, when I turn the screen on, they all come flooding in at once. If I disable wifi, notifications come through fine. This makes no sense to me. SMS and MMS however, work fine regardless of root and/or wifi connection.
I spent quite a bit of time with a TMO rep who did all she could do to no avail. She said I should return the device for another one, which I did today.
On an unrooted, brand new device (no apps installed either), I could now get these notifications when connected to the wifi. Strange, but ok. So I rooted it, and the SAME problem began again. No notifications when on wifi.
I must have sent 30+ emails to myself trying various things to get it to work on wifi, but no dice.
I checked to make sure wifi stays on when the phone is alseep, and it was.
I checked the Samsung push service was active, and it was.
I am on the ANCH update.
I am seriously stumped here. I suppose my next step is to unroot it and see if the problem goes away. I am really surprised that no one else has reported this!

Well, I just took the NE6 software update via Kies, and nothing has changed.
I should also have said in the first post that when on wifi, and the screen is ON, all notifications are instantly delivered.

Have you tried different wifi access points? You could have background data disabled under power saving mode. I remember seeing an option to block notifications while the screen is off. I can't remember exactly where the option is located tho.

I have not had a chance to try other wifi access points yet, but will do that today I hope.
I did check all the power saving modes, and all were disabled.
I'll look for an option to block notifications when the screen is off, but it seems like if that was turned on, then I wouldn't get notifications regardless of being on wifi or not.
Interesting note though: Last night, on wifi, I did get notifications for some emails. So it does "work", but they are very, very delayed. I'll try and determine how delayed today as well, but for now, I will just leave wifi disabled

Did this ever get fixed? I've been experiencing the same issue it's driving me nuts. I have my phone set to not sync, I'll manually sync but it will take several minutes, if ever to sync. My phone is getting good wifi speeds between 60-90mbits down, and I can browse the Web without delay but stuff that syncs... Facebook, Gmail, etc. All have an excessive delay.

I use Textra for my messaging app and when I open a message from the lock screen alert the keyboard will not Swype, I have to tap the keys unless I close the message and open it in the app. Only thing I can find wrong so far, what about you??

you have to click the close button twice to close all. If goggle play services doesn't take right you can get a battery drain. The blue logo with your phone number doesn't work right unless you add multiple accounts to the build prop. My calls have some sort of noise I'm told -once and a while I have advanced calling active and a sound mod installed so that could be the reason for that.

How's everyone's battery doing? Mine has been significantly worse since LP. I used to get 6-8 hours SOT, and now I'm at 4-5. Haven't done a full wipe, could that be why? No obvious culprits show up on the battery usage list though.
On my own .509 PRF:
WiFi will randomly disconnect, and then it will say that the AP is disabled. This also happens when say leaving my apt to go to work. Disconnecting from my home router when out of range (obviously) then arriving at my office I can see the office's AP listed, but it says disabled as well.
Another bug has been losing bluetooth after ~15 minutes of connectivity. It will then drop the connection, cycle BT on/off a couple of times, and finally reconnect after about 1min.
I've started fresh many times, so I'm going to try another PRF on here, make another new one, and if those both fail I shall return to 4.4.4
I haven't really experienced issues on 5.0.2, but battery life has been about the same for me getting up to 5 hours of SOT, 6 hours even depending on what I did that day. I'll say though, in general our Lollipop variant for Verizon still separates us from the general Xperia community since twice already I flashed scripts that's supposedly for all Xperias and it does not work as planned for the Z3v.
Mine is working great, have had some wakelock issues but I'm using non root greenify, basically force close on some runaway apps. I have noticed battery charging takes a bit longer and on wireless it doesn't kick off and will continue to maintain 100% which I'm indifferent about. Battery life has skyrocketed, getting 6-7 hrs screen on. Was getting roughly 1 hr per 25%, now 1 hr per 15%.
battery has been as good as before
my GS9+ is on the verizon network if that matters.
In the last 4-5 weeks my notifications, especially those with sound have become severely delayed. It is especially noticeable with apps such as:
SmartThings (when doors open and close at)
Nine (Exchange email)
HikVision Connect (Doorbell camera motion notifications)
It seems to happen more often when on wifi, but i can't confirm that.
When I get up at work from my desk it is like the phone wakes up and all of the sudden I get 5-10 notifications all at once. This also happens at home. It is like the phone wakes up and catches up with a bunch of notifications that it forgot to report.
SMS notifications don't seem to ever be delayed.
Was there a software update or app update that someone knows that might be causing this problem?
Granted I don't have Verizon at all, but my s9+ isn't having any notification issues.
Did you try disabling battery optimization? I turned mine off so that the phone wouldn't put apps to sleep and etc. Power savings for wifi turned on? If so try making sure that's turned off so your phone stays connected to wifi when the screen is off.
Any of the power savings mode enabled or other power savings apps you may have installed?
Mobile data plan permitting try running the phone on mobile data only (no wifi) to see if the issue happens as well.
Are there other apps effected by the issue your having? If a select number of apps are effected (and others are not) try getting in touch with the app developers and let them know what is going on.

I'm on Verizon. Similar deal. I let a system update get applied "Just security patches, no big deal", and it broke some of my notifications. Not all of them. Just some of them. I thought this was early Sept, but might have been in late Aug.
It's "doze". It used to only happen if your phone sat still for 20 min, but it was supposed to wake up with movement. Now mine kicks on after 3 min and movement doesn't impact it at all. You are supposed to be able to whitelist apps you don't want put to sleep, but it seems to be ignoring that setting for some of my apps. After three min I can send my phone a message, and it won't alert me at all. It's not until I turned on the screen, that they all come rolling through.
