This has been discussed in the past but a) it a long time time ago, so maybe newer tools are out and b) no definite conclusion was drawn, so please can I ask again, what's the easiest way to back up all apps, data and settings (idealy including home screen settings, ringtones, everything) to survive a superwipe (i.e. restore it after a super wipe and new ROM version installation)?

Use CWM Recovery to do a complete backup. Very easy to backup and restore.

But restoring a CWM backup will overwrite the new system with the old one. What I want is backup all data, apps and settings but not the system data. And then restore them after I install the new ROM.

Hey all! I'm new to android and am ready to flash a rom. However, I am concerned that i will lose some gamesave/App data.. I have used titanium backup to backup all system and app data with the batch feature.. Can I just run the restore all feature to get everything back the way it was? Will i have to replace all my widgets?? It just seems to simple! Thanks!
Titanium backup will restore your apps and data.....and system data. It is very important that when you restore, if you have backed up any system data, do not restore that. The rom you flash will have its own system data, so you don't wan't to load your old data over that. Force close city. Just restore "user apps" and it will be just like you left it. As far as your widgets, yes, you will have to restore them. All your wifi access, wallpaper, etc is linked to your google account (if you have it checked under settings>privacy.)
another approach, slightly different, but can accomplish the same end goal is using nandroid provided in the custom recovery. i personally prefer nandroid as the source code is available online (i.e. everybody can view exactly what operations it is performing) where as titantium backup does not publish its source code.
before flashing a rom, i'd do a full nandroid backup. after you've flashed the rom, your data *should* still be intact as most ROM's are not scripted to wipe your personal data when you flash them. if for some odd reason your personal data is erased from a ROM flash, which it shouldnt, you can chose to nandroid restore just the /data partition, which is where all custom settings and user data are kept, other than a few which store on the /sdcard.

This might be a stupid question, but is there any way to get my backup restored? I just tried to restore a backup through CWM but it wiped my villainrom flash and went back to what I had before.

Is that not the whole point you backup XX try ZZZ decide you dont like it and restore the backup of XX which wipes ZZZ .

yes I realized that eventually, I thought the point was to save your data like apps, themes, etc. so you can load them in the new rom. my apologies
You should not restore cache. When you boot up to a new rom, it will just redo the cache anyways.
As for Clockwork Recovery backup and restore, it does a full backup of the rom, including cache and user settings and apps. It restores back to the original rom as well.
I think you want to restore your settings and applications of your old rom into villainrom. I wouldn't recommend it as it settings for stock and custom might be different and can cause weird issues.
on that note, is there any way to access that information after flashing the new rom (to see what apps i'm missing and download them all again so I don't have to just redownload each one as I realize i need it?) without restoring the backup

There is this wonderful app called Titanium Backup, it backup all your wonderful apps. This way, when you switch ROMs, you can just restore all those wonderful apps that you have been stockpiling.
On my stock rooted ROM, after wiping data, cache and dalvik cache, I've created a Nandroid Backup.
My question is, if someone restores this backup to there phone, which is the same as mine, will it have any of my information, or could it possibly cause any problems?
I was simply going to upload it, so that if anybody has any problems installing the latest OTA or hasn't got a working Nandroid backup, they can use it.

Em well first off, if you done the wipe data ect first then you will not have a NANDROID Backup as there is nothing there to back up,
Second i wouldn't recommend anyone but yourself use the back up but if its between friends ect from with in the phone in settings go to factory reset and that way your data will be clear for the most part and safe to share with friends you trust in-case anything is left behind but i would not release to public in any capacity and then proceed to create your NANDROID backup from within your recovery app.
If you really had to do it that way, you would want to create a NANDROID backup for yourself, reboot your phone go to settings factory reset, then boot back to recovery make another NANDROID Backup (This one for Friends clear of your data)

The whole point of me doing the wipe data etc first, was to clear any personal data from the phone.
The Nandroid backup was so that there was a working stock rooted rom.
My question should have been does it keep any data that cannot be manually deleted. e.g. Serial numbers etc....But I think I found the answer. Apparently it does and it can cause problems when restoring.
The only reason I was going to do it was because, I have seen a couple of people using the HTC One X, that are trying to get from stock rooted 1.26, to stock rooted 1.28 and this backup would get them there.

If you take the boot.img and system.img from your backup and then use dsixda's kitchen to create a flashable rom.

There should be no information or data in your output rom so anyone can use it etc
Been having some issues with my SGS3 and charging, using JellyBam (v7, fairly old, so thought I would start fresh on latest version).
Using CWM5, I did a backup. Factory reset + wipe cache + wipe dalvik cache, then flashed the new ROM. Figured out what I needed to for the charging issues, but forgot I didn't to a titanium backup with all my apps, and more importantly the app data.
I can confirm looking in the CWM data.ext4.tar that the data I want is in there.
So I backed up my new flash setup, restored the previous backup, thinking I would do a titanium backup and get everything setup in my newly flashed ROM. After restore (I did another factory reset + cache + dalvik wipe first), it presents me with the google login wizard, and it seems to have remembered some of my apps but not others. So the restore seems to not have worked.
If I try reinstalling the app it gives me the 'Unknown error code during application install: "-24"' error
Any ideas how I can get the restore to work correctly?
OR some way from the fresh install (providing that restore works too) to grab the app data from my data.ext4.tar and move it into my working install? I tried just copying the file into /data/data but that didnt seem to do the trick

Flash the firmware you made a cwm backup of restore via CWM .
Flash Philz recovery and make a new backup .
Now get 'error while restoring /data'. Seems to be an issue on CWM5 for >2GB backups.
Going to try flashing Philz recovery and try again
Nope no joy. Is there any way I can extract data from a nandroid backup?
As I'm only really fussed about a handful of apps so could do it manually

maybe there is the way, but is better if you make a update of your CWM,... 6.0.3 or 0.4 touch... by the way I always use two mores apps for backing up data from my SIII ... one for sms, contacts ecc.. to extSDcard "Super backup pro" and the other app for backup data apps "Ultimate backup pro"
Hey, everytime I want to flash a new ROM or even new version of the same ROM,
I like to clear everything beforehand and factory reset my device.
The issue is everytime I do that I have to download all my apps again and configure the device all over again (apps & phone settings) .
I need some guide about backing up the maximum data possible (settings and applications) while still keeping the new flash as clean as possible.
I own Titanium paid version.

if u have titanium backup than all you need to do is backup all your user apps + data. then when flashing a new rom you can rather manually wipe the phone through recovery. in twrp you can go to wipe and then advanced wipe and choose Cache,Dalvik,Data and System..DONOT choose internel storage else youll wipe everything even ur media and backups.
in titanium you can create titanium backup as a zip file for you to flash, so create that.after flashing a new rom flash the titanium backup as well, so as soon as your phone is up and running you can go straight to titanium backup batch actions and restore all user apps and data. you wouldnt need to download your apps again.
