Apparently I am wrong and I will admit it. From everything I saw and read it looked like the PRL did not have anything to do with LTE or the PCS G block.
Driving through Houston or should I say riding through Houston, with an EVO LTE and Galaxy 3. The Sammy is fully stock. EVO LTE is not of course. It has the latest firmware and base with a 12124 based prl. I couldn't get a 4G connection on the evo. I tried everything until the last thing I tried, PRL update to 25xxx. Boom.. 4g.
It makes total sense now. It's based on the MCC MNC records in these prls. Although it has nothing to do with the acquisition records themselves. Maybe it is just hard coded to g block. And later if another carrier is added it would get pushed or hashed to the other carrier like evdo does.
I want to confirm.. Has anyone been able to pickup LTE with a non 24xxx or 25xxx prl?
On another note.. The scanning is fixed on the EVO. I found I had a 4G indicator more on the evo than the galaxy 3. Shocker there. Would have thought it was the other way around.
Need to change my sig to read wimax 4g signal now but technically it is still correct as it will not give you a better signal

In the one day I had both running here in Dallas the s3 grabbed LTE sooner and held it further. In most cases the evo never connected.

Something like.. With 25006 you test lte. Then load 12124.. Now test in same spot. If no lte then hit, update profile, toggle lte cdma mode, reboot etc. Still no lte? Then hit update prl. Do you have lte now?

I'd say it's pretty well confirmed.. I've had S4GRU test 12124 on his S3 in an LTE area and it would not connect to LTE.
Any other EVO LTE users in LTE areas, I'd like to see a test or two as well to set this as 100% confirmation.

Next week, I'm flying from Atlanta to San Antonio, which are both supposed to have LTE. I'll test and report back.
I can confirm that LTE does NOT work with the 12124 prl. I went to an area in my neighborhood that I know has LTE and it only picked up Sprint 3G. However, when I updated the PRL through the settings to 25006, I immediately got 4g LTE.
This is outside the Atlanta perimeter btw.
Prl has no direct impact on CDMA (Sprints own) services nobody ever said LTE was a CDMA service. It makes sense to me that they would need to some how update the phone when more LTE upgrades are finished but that's just me

Lol I'm saying it could, lte is a gsm based technology as far as I know, using a prl system to update LTE info makes sense to me

PRLs definitely impact any CDMA service. That's the driving force for your phone to pick up channels/SIDs.
I've already confirmed with my phone and several other users and including documentation that PRL entries are required for LTE to work. It doesn't work the same as 1X and EVDO scans. If the Geo area in the PRL does not have the MCC/MNC record then LTE will not work in any of the SIDs in that GEO. The LTE is controlled by the MSPL and MLPL files.
Now for the folks that want 12124 but want LTE, you should be running 56006. Here's my analysis on the new range of PRLs:
54006 - is close to 24006 except for about 21 international SIDs removed (includes international LTE records)
16006 - almost exactly like 12124 except for the LTE records included and 800SMR SIDS are higher priority over PCS band (does not include international LTE records)
56006 - very close to 16006 except some international priority changes (includes international LTE records)
and the post with the PRLs: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=30881283&postcount=14
Cool! Finally a PRL that give VZW 3G roaming and Sprint 4G LTE. I will have to test for full LTE coverage tomorrow when I'm in Atlanta though. So far I have a little 4G near the end of my neighborhood. Also it wouldn't recognize 4G until I cycled through CDMA and CDMA/LTE mode then it picked up 4G.
But prls do not directly affect sprints own CDMA services, they use prl primarily for roaming. Now they have begun to use it for lte as well, lte is a derivative of gms/utms which is also not a sprint cdma service

Why? Two words : backlash.

sprint will not be instantly switching to lte, the network still needs to be rolled out, it will probably be a few years time, all the while wimax will still be active. im sure wimax devices will start to get phased out before lte is ready to launch.
When Sprint switches to LTE will we be able to use Sprint phones on Verizon and vice versa, and have data?

Answer, no.. clearwire, which is the 4g Wimax, is going to piggy back off of Sprint with the LTE, which basically means that clearwire is going LTE too so the phones should work on there bands for 4g

DoctorComrade and NewZJ are quite correct. If you read the press release about it made by Sprint (Found here: http://newsroom.sprint.com/article_display.cfm?article_id=1989) Sprint entered an agreement with LightSquared to deploy LTE basestations on Sprint's towers. This is because it is significantly cheaper for LightSquared compared to deploying their own towers and network.
With this agreement, Sprint has the option to purchase bandwidth from LightSquared in the future, if they decide to.

From what I have read, no. As I understand it, the frequencies used for LTE and WiMax are part of the old analog TV spectrum. When the US switched to digital all those frequencies were auctioned off. Different carriers now own different parts of the spectrum and their phones need chips tuned to those particular frequencies. The lower end of the spectrum has the best building penetration and sold for the most money, that's the part that Verizon bought. As for whether they can make chips that switch depending on strongest signal, I don't know. As for whether cell providers will make deals allowing roaming on each others LTE networks, I don't know. As I said I could be wrong about this whole thing, this is just my understanding from the info I've read on the subject.
Wimax is 2000+ mhz, Verizon LTE is 700ish mhz
So no roaming, Wimax was said to be its upgradable to LTE via ota push
sent from the moon
wimax and lte can be any frequency, verizon happens to have approval for ~750, att ~700, sprint ~2400. fcc must approve the usage and sprint neither has the approval or spectrum to do it lower unless they give up iden (~800-850) and then get approval but nextel ptt is still popular

I'm pretty sure the frequency for LTE is dependent on the frequencies each carrier has purchased the rights to. I believe the reason WiMax is 2000+ and Verizon LTE is 700 is because that's the part of the spectrum that each company owns, not some inherent requirement for each technology.
Edit: NewZJ beat me to it.
For kicks, I used the stock PRL for the EVO LTE (24003) on to my Photon. Wow my data flies with it hovering around 1600kbps - 2300kbps down and 500kbps up. I attached the PRL file below with some screen shots. the first on is my status screen showing the PRL version. The second is my Sprint 3g speed. The last is my roaming. Feel free to try it at your own discretion and I'm not responsible if anything good or bad happens to your device.
Here are instructions to manually update your PRL. You'll need to be on a blur based rom and have your phone's MSL.

Its called QoS...I was expected something like this...wimax was never the issue ...it was the overall sprint bandwidth ...so now with lte coming how do hide that lte vs wimax was never the issue...it was the network behind it?...you set a network QoS to give most of the bandwidth to the lte devices and shortchange the non lte...even if you not using lte...the network will put the new stars of sprint lineup to the head of the line to make the look faster....wonder why you see all the reports of ever slower g3 on sprint for the other phones?...you just lower in the qos pecking order..you get what left of the bandwidth...you flying standby..the new first class phone fly first class on the backside of the network even if the local phone link to the network is just 3g

The short answer, in my opinion, is that the coverage maps are wrong (or not _yet_ accurate). I live and work in areas that should have LTE, but I never see my phone switch to it.

I agree with you on this one. I was in Lewisville, just north of 121 on Friday and had LTE but lost it on my drive home somewhere in Frisco. I have not seen it come back since then and the coverage map says I should have it at home and at work but I never see it come on. I think they only have a few towers up at the moment. I saw some techs working on a tower this morning on my way to work and I couldn't see the vehicle, but was hoping it was Sprint!

I can get it outside my house in Colleyville, but not inside just like WIMAX was. LTE will be useless to me if I cannot get it inside buildings. Frustrating. Thanks for any suggestions.

Ive been reading the threads and i see the fix is to cycle airplane mode. But i haven't seen any explaining why. Ive noticed that if you travel to an area without ehrpd(the hand-off from evdo to lte) itll drop you to evdo rev a. But wont put you back to ehrpd unless you either restart the phone, cycle airplane mode, or switch cdma/lte to cdma only and back to cdma/lte. If this has been explained, i apologize but i can't find it
So Sprint/HTC needs to fix the hand off back to ehrpd when you get back to an ehrpd area. Chop chop

We've been talking about this in several threads and its across many forums. The problem has been known since the phone was in Sprint's lab before launch. They rushed it out so OG Evo people would lock back in to 2 yr contracts. They tried to fix it twice via OTA firmware but still failed. Sprint is in denial there is a problem and so is HTC. You come to your own conclusion if it will get fixed or not.
It's working much better in the latest cm10 builds. Running the 10/25 build from deck. I've been holding lte almost exclusively. And have it places even toggling it before wouldn't get me. The handoff can sometimes take a minute, but it's on lte so much in comparison to before it hasn't been an issue.

So if you were to flash a sense rom right now, your lte issues will return as well? Is there anyway you can do a quick nandroid then flash a sense rom to see if it goes back to having the same issues? I am very curious as to what the results would be. I would do it myself but I don't have lte where I am right now.
So I'm at work now, and I'm still not picking up any lte inside. But I am when I go outside.
And I picked up and held strong lte at my girlfriends place the other day, which has never happened.
So it seems it is better, but still not 100%. As an iphone or s3 would have lte in my building.
If I go back to a sense rom I cant hold onto an lte signal at her place at all. Even when set to lte only. That part i can reproduce.
At least seems to confirm software issues.
pretty frustrating having to do the airplane mode trick to get 4g back (even then it doesnt work all the time), especially since when 4g is working it's so nice to FINALLY have acceptable data speeds from Sprint.
kind of feel helpless here with this phone, I haven't gone to a sprint store to complain yet, but it's not like I can reproduce the 4g connection issue it just happens.
I think they have fixed some it on the stock rom.
I left for the GS3 about a month or two into owning my EVO LTE. My main gripe was getting stuck on 1x after driving around Dallas.
After having some issues with my GS3 after their LI3 update i decided to go back to my EVO LTE since it too has had some updates.
The week i used my EVO LTE i never had any issues with it getting stuck on 1x. It also did switch back and forth between LTE, eHRPD and EVOD/A normally. If not a little slow to switch to LTE from time to time. I did find another thread and it looks like they have the LTE scan time set to 30 minutes. Way to long if you ask me.. But i guess in a year when more areas have actual saturation of LTE then once your connected it shouldnt matter much what the scan time is.
Yes, we know they have tried twice but it still doesn't work right.

I'm curious. You bought a GS3 at full price? EBay?
I'm getting tired of this issue myself. I considered maybe switching to T-Mobile and getting the new LG Nexus, but I checked, and Sprints ETF doesn't start getting pro rated until after the fifth month! It will be at least next June before it becomes financially feasible, maybe longer.
I don't have a lot of hope that this issue will get fixed. The weird thing to me is that it's obvious Sprint values the name, EVO, yet this will effectively kill that reputation.

Well how i got it isnt really relavent to the conversation. but if you must know it was a trade for another phone i had on CraigsList.
I like both devices but to me the upgrade from ICS to JB didnt really do all that much on the GS3.
Today i switched back to my EVO LTE and am going to use that for another week.

Working downtown LA today in one of the high rises - no 4G, even after doing the airplane mode trick or re booting. I guess they're not going to make their October deadline!

Well, here's the press release saying where Sprint is going with the LTE.
http://newsroom.sprint.com/article_display.cfm?article_id=2459
I really wish it would come to my area, it kinda sucks having in markets on either side of where I live, but getting left out in the cold.

If that's the case, it's coming to Birmingham, AL soon. Having said that, Birmingham never had Wimax officially released, although some areas do have Wimax coverage.

Ha, I read Oklahoma and got all happy. Then realized it was Ardmore, with population of like 10.
Hopefully this means they'll keep building it out here though.

I'm guessing this is a joke. Ask the folks in Beaumont, TX that have had eHRPD for several months now and their LTE build won't even start until next year. So I guess technically you are correct, LTE is coming everywhere. The question is just when..
Nope, they will only offer in that town and only to 7 of the 10 people there. Lol of course they will build it out! :banghead:

Armpit Oklahoma, well I suppose cows/farmers/and hillbillies need better coverage.... Dear sprint, even Dan Hesse said the 405 area connection and coverage was one of the worst experiences he'd encountered on sprint....please build here. Thank you.

Don't get too exited. Sprints LTE is a joke. I live in Dallas where they first rolled out LTE and I got the HTC Evo 4G LTE on day one. Ever since they turned on LTE here in June I think I've had a LTE signal for a total of 20min. I talked to a sprint rep recently and was told that Sprint won't truly be finished with the Dallas LTE until sometime in 2013. Each city they do a roll out just means they started in that city(1 LTE tower)

Have you tried the LTE on another device? I thought it was a joke as well until I saw the real network with a phone that doesn't have LTE connectivity issues.
