Can't confirm root. - Motorola Photon 4G

I rooted my phone way back when using one click root and I have superuser installed but never had any custom roms. Every time I use root check it does not confirm if I am rooted or not and keeps checking for what seams like an eternity. Am I missing something? Please help, I am trying to back up my current stock rom and can't get by. Thank you in advance...

Ways to get confirmed:
1. Use root checker from market.
2. Install terminal Emulator and run command su
$ su
Click to collapse
If SuperUser popup comes out.. you are done rooting..
3. To get rooted.. Universal Androot for 2.1 - 2.3 devices.
Sorry I dont have the above mentioned files but you can have those with a little Googling.
Also you haven't mentioned your device, on which you are performing XperiMents

I guess, If its Photon4g, then go for Photon Torpedo method, and confirm the root with above.

Thanks for the reply. Every time I use root checker I just runs forever and never stops checking. But I used the cmd prompt su and and the cmd line changes from a $ to a # so that means I am rooted. I been trying to perform a nandroid back up with rom manager and I keep getting a Failed to Boot 2 message every time, any ideas?

By the way my phone is running on Android 2.3.4, Kernel version is 2.6.3.2.9 and the Build is 198_6. Rooted using one click some time back but never unlocked bootloader or installed a custom rom. I've been holding out on the ota update so I can unlock my boot...

yeah. don't ever ever ever use rom manager. it's junk and doesn't work. do not use it or its recoveries. use jokers v3 or photon3 or another confirmed working recovery. NEVER USE ROM MANAGER.

Ok it's a lot to go through, but I'm going to see what I can get.

Don't call an app junk just because it does not fully work on a particular phone. It actually does work for most things.
The recoveries that u mentioned are just modified versions of the recovery built into Rom Manager.
But of course u knew that!

Try the photon torpedo direct method it will tell you if your rooted and also can apply a proper root if your root install went bad.

[Q] ROOTED, but says it's not... WTF?!

Stock 2.2 Long story short, I rooted my Vibrant. Says it rooted, everything's fine. BUT
Busybox says it's not rooted, superuser is there.
Everything acts like it's rooted otherwise except ROM Manger doesn't ask for permission but won't boot into recovery.
Tried custom 3e recovery installer. When I try to reinstall packages it never goes into CWM recovery.
WTF?!?!
I don't think you can root 2.2. I have always found the best way is to Odin back to 2.1 and then use super one click root. Then install your customs roms or whatever from there.

Somebody better tell my phone that lol. I had 2.2 rooted previously
got it. disregard

You can root 2.2 I did it but did you power down your phone after root... it needs to reboot as far as cwm you cant use it on 2.2... 3e is cool but alot of people have problems with it... Odin to stock 2.1 its easier...

How did you get it to work? I am having the same problems as you described.
run superoneclick and reboot phone afterwards. You must reboot for it to work.

[Recovery] CWM Recovery

If you are on honeycomb you are free to flash recovery via Rom manager.
If you are on gb I am working on a compatible recovery right now. Once I get it done you will be able to use the features in Rom manager but not flash recovery via Rom manager
confirmed working with Honeycomb htcdev unlocked hboot 1.14.
whats the difference from this one compared to the older one most of us currently run?

any hope on porting a touch based recovery? I think all tabs should have a touch based recovery since the lack of HW buttons
Guessing this still does not allow to use the internal memory for anything?

That is next on my list. I'm hoping to get with doomlord for the touchscreen stuff as the flyer/evo view uses nonstandard calls.

I removed the update zip. It doesn't actually replace recovery. Only soft boots it. Use img file via fastboot

is there anything special we gotta do if we already have the older version? Or can we just use the fastboot command and boom?

Updated OP
I just rooted my view last night.. I flashed recovery once, enough to put the SU file on SD card to root. But since then, I've tried to do a backup (through ROM manager) and the white HTC screen pops up and doesn't go away. So then I tried to do it manually through hboot and when I choose recovery it does the same thing .. what do you think might be the problem? I'm very new to this so I'm hoping it is something simple that I missed... Please help

Unrooting itself?

I had unlocked my dna on Friday, installed cwm and flashed supersu zip. IT didnt work though, tried to update the binary and it failed, so i did some searching and found A superuser flash zip, i flashed it and root had worked for a bit and then today i went to calibrate my battery, apon receving the error 'root your device first' i checked out titanium backup and same error 'no root'. Is this a bug ? Or is my phone going nuts
Without a special kernel you can't use any root app that attempts to edit /system.

Root Checker is a nice little (free) app...sometimes helps when in question so then your energy can be spent elsewhere finding solutions, I know there are other apps as well that do the same thing....

Lost root?

Rooted last night. Flashed the stock, deodexed Rom, Flashed a couple of mods like the camera mod, transparent Rosie, and the 50 gb dropbox mod. I used root explorer last night and it asked for root permission, now today it says I have to root permission. Any of these mods break root?

anyone?
Ok...a little more information here. I flash FactoryRom debloat final, I have root..when I flash transparent rosie I have no root.... When on FactoryRom final, I open root explorer it asks for root permission I allow it and I can access system files. After I flash the transparent rosie mod, when I open root explorer it says and I try to open a system folder it says my phone isn't rooted and it doesn't ask for root permissions.
Do you have a modified kernel?
i haven't flashed anything seperately, just whatever kernel came with factory rom
That's why, you need a custom kernel

Well as soon as I said that, I got it working, but I had to reflash the supersu and busybox zip then download supersu from the market, but all is well now
I just hope I don't have to do that every time I flash a mod.

You only have to do that if you go stock
You're still going to have to have custom kernel for actual root

[Q] Questions about recovery

1. I was in rom manager earlier and noticed it says I have both CWM and TWRP installed. I remember installing project freegee w/CWM but not TWRP. Is this an error? If so, is it an issue?
2. I'm seeing something about CWMtouch or whatever. I just installed what came with freegee. I'm not quite sure how to use adb for the updater script. Is it necessary that I install this? Is freegee using a way outdated version?
Thanks in advance.

You need to upgrade to a new recovery. The one that came with free gee is broken, so any backups you made with it are no good. I personally use sk8's recoveries, but TWRP is good to go too.

I don't use rom manager, but I'm pretty certain you can only have one recovery. Also, the updater script isn't needed either.
Someone will jump in here with more info.
