I'm creating this thread for anyone running on a 3HG network. There seems to be problems with custom firmware not being able to differentiate between the 2G and 3G networks.
I'll explain. I'm currently using a custom ROM and very happy, however, the stock rom seems to have some built in special features to detect the 2g and 3g portion of the 3 network separately and ban roaming unto other networks. (For example, O2, vodefone etc say (not allowed) next to them when searching with stock rom.) I know 3 does not run their own 2g network and the 2G portion is "roaming" onto vodefone without charge. Even though the phone detects the 2G portion as "3", whenever you connect to it the phone goes into Roaming mode. However the stock rom default is to "Allow National Roaming" (An option not present in my custom rom) and the stock rom then bans other networks besides 3 so that you can't accumulate massive data charges.)
I assumed that this feature was built into the .csc portion of the stock ROM. However, this is not the case.
I was able to download the csc portion of my rom from androidfirmware.net.
Unfortunately, I did not solve me problem. I'm on 3 Ireland. My stock rom can breakdown the network information into two networks:
3 (3g)
3 (2g)
It then selects the best one based on signal.
Unfortunately, myl custom rom (omega 13.1) just see two networks named as:
3
3
It doesn't switch back to 3g ever. It's a shame, I thought flashing the csc and modem from stock rom would fix this but it doesn't. I might have to always run stock firmware.
On another note, for those interested in modem files, regardless of which 3 Network you are on, you MUST run either NELF1 or NELE modem on your rom. I have extensively tested all modems and 3UK/IE are setup to specifically work best with these two modems. The download speeds are very fast, but more importantly they are consistent. I was able to obtain better speeds with some other modems but it would stall and hang and drop. These speed bursts did not make it faster overall. My signal was about 1/3 of the 3uk modems with all other tested modems. If you flash any custom rom you will notice a vast improvement in battery life, signal and consistency using one of the above modems

(newest) NELF1
I have not tested between the two, I tried the latest version NELF1 and was blown away by the difference so just kept it. Cheers!
Any help with the above network differentiation problem would be appreciated. Feel free to post your thoughts or comments or suggestions.
Thanks.
Its well known that the NE modem range are better and even better than stock for some on non 3 networks
First general release was. 3 Ireland
Firmware info: PDA: XXALE8 | Phone: NELE4 | CSC: 3IEALE3
UK 3
Firmware info: PDA: XXALE8 | Phone: NELE4 | CSC: H3GALE4
Same modem different CSC
jje
I run every sort of Rom on my phone and never have those problems.
Using XXDLH9 modem now and pulling 6mbps down and 2-3mbps up and I live in the country, haven't used NELE4 since the day I got the phone.
Also in regards to the roaming and the massive charges, you won't incur any charges when you roam in Ireland, it will use Vodafone and that's it, even then they only let you use 2g data too and that's not charged either.
You must get poor signal where you are seeing as it keeps dropping back to 2g, try going into settings > more settings > mobile networks > network mode and changing it to wcdma only wait a few minutes and see how you get on.
To add to that: as far as I know NELE4 and NELF1 won't work on new firmwares. Voice calls get messed up, you can't hear them or they can't hear you.

Hi there, I have exactly same problem with I9300 and Three Ireland, did you find a solution ???
I have two Three simcards and problem is only with one of them, I even replaced this simcard for another one but with no luck
any help?
thank you

Hey lads,
Did anyone ever find a solution to this problem. I'm on three ireland. I've an old galaxy s young with always stays on H/H+ and never drops to egde no matter where you are where as my new S4 consistently drops to edge over H when coverage is low.. is there any solution to this problem? I've flashed on the three firmware from sammobile but it's no fix!
Eoghan.
I'd also like to find out if a solution was found for this? Does anyone know how to go about modifying modems or something along those lines that could solve the issue?

Not long ago I flew from Oslo to Moscow and my phone had one of the latest GB-ROMs. In Oslo my phone worked like it should, but when I landed in Moscow I couldn't get any connection. Fortunetly I had several modem files on my phone and I flashed one of them and got connection.
This time with an ICS-rom (LP2) which is Russian I have no problems in Norway nor Russia.
How can we know if our phones with the installed modem version will work when we are travelling Wordwide? For us with rooted phone we can stack a bunch om modem files when we are travelling but for those who haven't rooted they will have a problem.
I can't beleive it should be like this. Or maybe my experience was out of the ordinary and a one time case?
You can't know for certain, apart from other users' experience with using various modems with different networks (or your own). Different modems work better with different networks sometimes. Fact of life.
If you've got a rooted phone, keep your modem collection on your SD card so you can flash them with CWM when you travel.
People without rooted phones, bad luck. They can talk to their carrier about poor reception or data speeds. Us who like to mess around with our phones can do something about it (try different modems).
SGS2 is no different to any other phone, some networks & in some areas you're going to have problems with reception/data.
Hello all
I'm just wondering what modem do the three branded s2 handsets come preinstalled with in the uk? I'm trying to find good modems for my s2 but cannot find something that would work as well as I would want it to. For example the other day my mate with a wildfire, on the same network had full bars of signal, whereas I had barely 1 bar. I was using Ki4 at the time, now I changed back to kl1 (im on checkrom v6 atm, but planning to go to cm9 again). Can anyone direct me to the modem.bin file or a stock rom file from the Three branded handset, i'd like both a gingerbread stock and ics stock rom from them if possible. If they are modems which are easily available please share the names with me.
Thank you
EDIT:
I tried a number of modems, which includes NELP2 which is meant to be good with three, although I don't know why I have had this problem on several roms before, where my signal randomly dissapears and goes to emergency only calls. Can anyone help with that also?

I recommend NELP4. It is designed for Three but many UK users use it as it supports great battery life and speeds + signal strength. I'm on O2 and using NELP4 and have great reception in places where there was no reception on LQ5/LQ6

hi,
You could try using ki4 modem ive been using this even after rooting my phone (originally used on GBrom) and had no probs with signal drop or overheating as some users have iasues with various modems.
Hey guys... I just picked up a
SGH-i717
v 4.0.4
Black Star V LF6
LTE Sim, LTE phone, downtown Toronto
I just picked the phone up on the weekend.... It's my first unlocked phone and my first rooted phone. I can't seem to get a network connection (I'm with Fido).... initially I tried a number of APN settings as I browsed through various threads on APN settings for Fido, Android and Galaxy Notes. Over the weekend I had connection of approx 1 to 2 bars, and was at least pulling light bandwidth off the edge network. I called Fido last night to have my network settings reset, and since them I haven't been able to get on my network. It seems to jog between no connection, 1 bar and 2 bar signal strength. Where before it said it was on the edge network it now does not connect to a network.
Calls to Fido show that everything is set up ok from their end; they can't support a non-Fido phone, and they say that they can't guarantee I'll get more than 2 bars connection on any non-fido phone. I was making calls & texts from the phone on the weekend whereas now, following the network reset from Fido, I have no connection. Yet when I Reset to Default the APN settings it populates the fido LTE apn without issue.
I'm lost... could someone please help me out here? I have no experience with either rooted phones or unlocked ones... and my furious googling and thread browsing just seems to be hitting the same recycled threads.
'
Where I'm left is now it's saying 'Not Registered On Network' regardless of the APN setting I use.
You need to check your baseband, or modem. And verify you have the correct one for the fido network.
I Dont know which radio image is going to work for you, but it sounds like the rest of the device is fine.
Check in the general section, and open the "super everything" thread.. There you will find many solution threads, and possibly the correct radio image to get your device running properly.
Radio images are almost always a .zip file that is flashed in recovery. and they are very easy to use. You simply download the image you want to try, and place it on your SD card. then boot into recovery and flash the file....reboot, and test.
You should read up on the flashing method too, and ensure that you understand exactly what you are doing "before" making internal changes to your device.
Additionally, you should make a nandroid backup of your current rom, just in case something goes wrong. then you have the ability to restore the old build and get the phone running again.
read, read, read....it's the only way to grasp this information...
good luck.....g
Thanks gregsarg, that's a great start for me. I will throw myself into that direction. Thanks again for your help.

always welcome....g
Well, a slow evening with little progress. After reading much, I ran a backup and tried installing a radio...no error message, just says installation aborted... not sure what tdsp is but I tried downloading and installing goo manager as I read where CWM (which is what I.assume I have now) doesn't work that might, but the installer which was supposed to have rebooted my phone and installed, it did not. This was a good 3 hrs and I was spent for the night. Guess I'll keep plowing away tomorrow.
I created a TWRP backup and have begun flashing different radios/modems... When I try to access mobile networks with the different radios installed none seem to work... .... so far I've tried:
Blaze_4g_LB7_radio_ATTNOTE
icsblaze
ROGERS_MODEM-CWMXLA2
UVLG3modemfori717
VK1_Test
KID_TEST
I've always wiped the dalvik/cache before flashing a new radio. My baseband was i717UCLF6, but after I restored it's now T879UVLG3, which is wierd because UVLG3 was the last radio I installed before I restored. I assume the radio didn't restore and I'm now using a T879 radio as opposed to an i717 radio, but it does not prompt me for a sim card after the restore. I can select a preferred band using the *#2263# command, but none seem to drive a better signal - I'm still idling somewhere between a no-signal and unknown network (most of the time) and 1 to 2 bars. Some of the above recognized my sim and suggested either HSPA, GSM, etc on the *#2263# command, others showed nothing when I did that.
Am I correct in assuming I just need to keep doing this until I find a compatible radio and upon flashing and rebooting it will simply connect with a solid signal? Is there any more specific versions of radios I should be targeting?
Re: SGH-i717 No network connectivity
The modem isn't changed or restored when you restore a nandroid or flash a rom.
If your goal is t-mobile or wind or simplemobile. You have the correct modem installed.
Just go to settings and input your APN and save it. Not every rom has the apn's , and not every carrier automatically sends the apn settings.
Thanks Ranger... my goal is to get it working with Fido... but I'm not sure if that's synonymous with T-mobile or Wind yet
and ngretud
Anyone else have any input on Fido radios? I can seem to find one that works for Ontario....
consistent tomsisu
I've now tried the following radios:
ICS Kid
ICS Telus
ICS.zip
ICSblaze
Kid_Test
UVLG3modem
VK1_Test
Every single one upon reboot leaves me with no connection.,, I don't get what I'm doing wrong here... frustrating. Only way I can get any kind of connection after flashing radios for hours is to flash my restore, which brings me back to the edge2 network. I've tried the Good Blaze ICS newamss and the UVLG3modelfori717...n7005amss too, and while I do get a connection it's virtually the same as the existing crappy 0 to 1 bar, or none with a no-connection symbol.
Any help guys?
Anyone at all? I get weak to no.reception in most places and when I leave the city I have no.connection at all. If it was the radios then why wouldn't trying all those radios show improvement? At this rate I am considering just scrapping the whole thing and getting a phone tats locked to Fido if this is the best there is.
Is this the right forum for this?
Re: SGH-i717D Radio/Modem for Fido - help!
There is no such thing as a Fido radio. You flash a T-Mobile compatible radio (recognizes and uses the two bands/frequencies AWS), verify the baseband in phone settings is the radio you flashed, input the correct APN settings for Fido.
Things to check: your sim works with data in another phone, data is enabled in phone settings.

Thx... SIM works fine, data is enabled. Phone always says unknown under the baseband on phone settings. Pretty confident APN settings are fine, I had them confirmed with Fido. Is it just I haven't found the right modem/radio?
I tried the ones I've found most common in threads: iceblaze, KID, VK1 and even an UVDLE from an S2 thread.... still getting the same low, low signal, 0 to 2 bars with intermittent EDGE:2 signal.
Re: SGH-i717D Radio/Modem for Fido - help!
Ok, so you are sending/receiving data. But is that only using EDGE network or have you connected to 3G data network?
And if you don't have a baseband, the usual remedy is to return to stock at&t ICS rom and reflash your preferred modem.
Have you had better data strength with another device? Maybe two bars is all your location gets.

I know we are conversing privately but I'll continue the responses here in case it benefits someone else. I haven't been able to connect to a 3g data network yet.... Because my unit is an i717D (Telus), do I need to flash to the stock Telus ICS rom or do I need to use the AT&T rom?
I was using an HTC One S, same network but locked to Fido, default OS, same SIM card, and was getting perfect signal and data speeds. I can't see how a place like downtown Toronto would yield any signal issues... like you said it seems like it's a radio/modem issue.
Re: SGH-i717D Radio/Modem for Fido - help!
I hate to suggest it, but one old dependable T-Mobile compatible modem:
http://bayfiles.com/file/6FwV/WrxD5a/Blaze_4G_LB7_radio_ATTNOTE.zip
Its been modified and many have had success with it.
So I have flashed a stock Telus ICS ROM, and along with a stock Rogers radio am getting a baseband I717RUXLF4, Edge:2 signal, and even Fido under network. Getting 1-3 bars signal strength, but still no data.
I tried flashing like 5-7 ICS radios and all of them produced a 'no sim' on reboot. I had to re-flash the stock Telus ICS rom and the rogers radio to get it to read a SIM again...
Super frustrating as I feel like I'm going around in circles never solving the issue here...
Does anyone have experience with Fido modems in Toronto or Ontario? Everything I seen to find.is either for.Telus, Rogers, Wind or Bell...
Sent from my SGH-I717D using xda app-developers app
Another update for no one to read....
Tried flashing the Perfection ICS ROM... got same signal issues, installed the Rogers radio that seemed to work incrementally better with the stock Telus Rom... still floating around the issue of low signal...
There is a shockingly little amount of documentation on Fido setups here... most everything is either Bell, Rogers or Telus, with some Wind and Mobilicity.
Can ANYONE please provide me with some direction here? I think I've done my due diligence and respected the process for new people that these forums demand in terms of reading, research and such... I haven't spammed my issues anywhere else, and clearly seem to be stuck on this issue....
Ok, you need a modem that is 850/1900. at&t is 900/1900. So thats why you get 2G because in some areas you connect with a weak signal.
The Canadian stock rom and the Canadian stock modem for Rogers should work.
In network settings you may be able to select network frequencies. If so, select WCDMA only so your phone stays on 1900.
If that doesn't work, dial *#2263# and find the band selector, and select 850.
Hi i have an Samsung Galaxy s2 and it has verry poor signal,if i go inside house i get no signal at all, only outside i have signal but is not full.Anyone can help me?
Are you sure your network provider provides good coverage in area? If yes, you can try flashing a different modem.
That's normal for any phone/dependent on what spectrum (frequencies) & equipment the carrier uses. I'm in the same situation at home in particular.
Its normal when i enter a building to get no service?
Sometimes. Depends on the building, depends on the topography of the area, depends on the frequencies your carrier is using, depends on the equipment your carrier is using in nearby cells (this can vary widely from area to area even with the same carrier).
Have you modded the phone at all - flashed custom roms/kernels/etc, specifically have you flashed different modems or RIL's ? If you're running the modem that was on the phone when you bought it (or a modem that came bundled with a stock rom released by your carrier if you've done OTA updates), it's either:-
A) One of those carrier-side issues or
B) A hardware problem.
And as Banjara said, the only thing you can do about A (the solution to B is obvious, take it to a mobile repair shop or Samsung service centre) is to try flashing different modems to see if that improves things. If you're already running a modem bundled with a stock rom released by your carrier however, trying modems released with stock roms released by other carriers/in other countries is unlikely to improve things much (if at all) for a very simple reason.
Modems bundled with stock roms released by your carrier have been (one would assume this is the case with all carriers at any rate) tested so they work for most people on your carrier's network most of the time. If you're getting poor connectivity with one of those, switching to a modem meant for another carrier's network probably won't make any difference.
So...Where you go from here depends on your answer to the question I posed in para 2.
Also imei is a generic one.
You didn't answer my question (IMEI's don't disappear all of a sudden on their own for no reason), so I'm going to leave it to other people to attempt to help you here. Nothing personal, but I have no desire to play 20 questions with you/'pull teeth' in order to get the info I need to help you.
Wait until someone else decides to help you.

Didin't flash any roms,or modified the phone, its a second hand unit i bought from a guy.
Hello, I have got a Le Max 2 with 6 GB / 128 GB (used, no warranty). Got it with ROM EUI 5.8.019S.
I have severe mobile network problems. I live in Dusseldorf, Germany, where LTE/4G (vodafone) never was a problem. The Le Max 2 shows 4G, often H or E or no service. Very rarely I get up to 15.000 kbit/s, but more often I get nothing. I tried with new APN, both SIM slots, vodafone and O2-SIM cards, reset to factory and finally i changed to Madsurfer ROM which works fine but does not change the network problem.
I don't know much about mobile network management but it seems like something is going wrong there. When my phone can not work with 4G it does not fallback to 3G or 2G but is completely offline.
Is it possible to flash a different modem?

There is description here how to check bands. Maybe you have US bands? There is also newest version of ROM 5.9 21s
If I help you please express it.
Do you mean the post about activating LTE / 3G bands? I tried this and it improved a little but only for a while (maybe random coincidence) and now it seems to be even worse. I flashed several roms with twrp but there was no improvement.
I found out that the modem settings are stored in special small partitions like modemst1 / -2 and you can erase them with fastboot. There exist some post about other phones where it helped to erase them and after a reboot they are created new (from other backup partitions) but I hesitate before I have further information - though I think I can not destroy more.

The modem files are changed by original roms.
Cooked roms do not change modem files.
so, try to install a original rom, like indian o chinese...
Try with the Indian ROM.
I flashed indian and chinese stock (with full wipe each time), did not help. Tried also madsurfer, TeamSpain Revolution and now Rom V6-X820 of Bshuy2003.
I still get network, internet works, after a while I can't download anything and often lose network completely or get E(DGE) though LTE signal should be good even inside building (in Düsseldorf) where I am testing. My Note 4 gets 4G all the time with no problem. I do not only have that problem in buildings though. Net is unreliable even outside. Works and then stops working after a while.
I installed LTE Discovery and found out: The Phone connects to LTE band 20 station, RSRP from -70 to -90 dBm (which is good), I can download at reasonable speeds (not very good though), after a while it connects to LTE band 3 or 7 stations with bad RSRP (above -100 dBm, often -115 dBm) and I can't download anything (My Note 4 can even with about same RSRP). Often it then moves to (E)DGE. If I restrict the Phone to 3G sometimes I get H or H+ (HSPA) but no good connection. Often carrier is lost completely. Sometimes LTE Discovery app states "Potential eCSFB issue detected", maybe there is a problem with the Fallback management.
It would work if the Phone did not change vom LTE band 20 to 3 or 7 stations.
I found this in CatLog, could it be related to the problem?

I also faced the same problem with brand new Indian X821. Mobile signal very weak or not signal at all. No amount of flashing stock or custom ROM fixed the problem. Flashing new or old NOH-HLOS.bin doesn't help. Other than this, there is no problem at all with the phone.
Any help is appreciated.
any update on this?

I didn't face such issue. Probably hardware problem?

Flash it with twrp and reboot.
I have a 4GB X820 and use USA AT&T. After recovering my phone from a hard brick using FlashOne, my cell data (voice would still work) would never come back up after switching out of airplane mode, and I'd have to reboot to get it to work again. Also at times, I would be in my house and would watch my signal go from full bars to one or none, every several seconds. I just flashed the 16s v.00024 modem in the USA folder from the link sky104hk posted and all is well so far.
For reference, my old modem was MPSS.TH.2.0.c1-00229-M8996FAAAANAZM-1 1
Thanks for the list of modems!
My phone no longer connects to the Tmobile network. It will connect to some towers and not others. Did tmobile push some sort of update? Many places I just get no service. I tried flashing the 26s radio, but still no dice. Or is the cell modem in my phone broke?

My old APN had connection but it was not good so I updated and it was better.. but it's just my provider.
I suggest you to flash another modem to see if that helps

Hello and thank you for your work. I have an X829 and I want to use it with European frequencies including the B20. What version of modem should I flash. Because I don't read Russian. Thanks
None of them. X829 does not support B20 so you will get LTE only in areas with B3 coverage. X820 supports both of them.

Dear siijii, I have the same problem.have you find a solution? Thanks
Hi,
Thanks for sharing Modem files.
I just got X820 but for some reason it is not connecting to LTE Band 20.
The ROM it came with is 5.8.019S
The questions are:
1) Is there any hardware difference between International version and Chinese version?
2) can i flash Chinese ROM on my x820 (my mobile has CE0560 written on back cover, so i assume it is international version)
3) When selecting *#*#4636*#*# >> select radio band >> "set GSM/UMTS band" list is empty, so do you think i need to flash modem to get European band profile here?
4) Which modem file should i flash for band 20, the Modem directory i downloaded from your link, has Russian language directory name.s If i use Google translate i can see the directory name with modem files are "For developers" , India, China, Russia & USA. No modem file for Europe which has Band 20 enabled?
Thanks in advance.
Take a look at the backside of your X2. If there is a branding in the downside of it, it isnt a X820. Got the same problem, bought a X820 and became a X829. Luckily, I got B3 here working.
