I'm have a bit of a problem with CWM not loading external sd card.
I have been tring various roms & have now decided to go back to stock.
I have installed the latest stock UK rom & the modem & kernel & have now rooted with tool kit, latest version.
When I go in to cwm recovery it's loading the sd card, I no there is nothing wrong with the card.
How can I fix this problem?

Nope that didn't work, rebooted after install then in to recovery - only seeing internal memory - NOT sd card
I had that problem as well. I use a 64Gb formated with ExFat. What i did was as follows.
I copied all data from the sd card to a pc. Then i formated the sd Card with Exfat again on the PC and copied all data back.
After that it was working without problems again.

I shall give this a try.
In the meantime, has anyone else got a solution or reason this happened?
Don't use exFat. It's a horribly hacked filesystem with even worse implementation under Linux (read: Android) due to it's very low acceptance.
If you want something more advanced than FAT32, use the much more sophisticated and reliable NTFS (requires an aftermarket kernel) or the Linux-native EXT4 filesystem which is also used on the internal storage.
Using Fat64 is just asking for trouble

Looks like this has got everyone stumpted.
So I tried a 32gb card & it's just the same - SD card not showing in CWM.

Hi guys,
i have flashed a few miui v4 roms and i think they have messed up my external sd card settings or something along the line.
now i'm back on a gb rom, i see the sd card when the phone is up and running but if i try to flash from cwm 4.0.1.5 it doesn't see mmy external card ?
do you guys have any idea how to sort this out ? i want to say that this sd card has always worked fine on this device, it's just now that cwm doesn't see it.
thanks
Format the card & see if the phone recognises it. If not, faulty card given you're running stock & the card should be visible to the phone/working fine if the card is good/not faulty.

What version CWM recovery are you on?
I meant, if you go to the Mounts and Storage menu, does it have an option for mounting or unmounting /sdcard? If so, does it say mount, or unmount? If it says mount, then you have to mount it in order to use it.
4.0.1.5 and yes there is mount, i mount it, go back to choose zip from sd card.....and there's no internal card detected....if i boot in the system i can see it with file explorer or the likes...it's just cwm not seeing it

Hmm. I've not used 4.x.x.x in quite some time.
I'm using 5.0.2.7. For me, anything that refers to "sdcard" is the external card. "internal sdcard" is the built in flash memory. And as it turns out, I didn't even have to mount /sdcard to use either.
Sorry man...

Hi
I am rooted and CWM always aborts when doing a NAND backup because it can't find android secure !
I know it should skip it but it does not.
Anyone know what I should do to fix this in cwm ?
Should I flash a different version of CWM ? If so can anyone recommend one that will work ?

Kind of running into a similar issue. When I try to do a back up in CWM, I'm getting that it can't mount backup path (but doesn't say what that path is, and I can't seem to mount sdcard in 'Mounts and Storage'). I'm going to assume this is like the SII where I need an actual ext SD card to run backups to? Can someone confirm? At work with no ext SD card.

The latest version of CWM-Recovery should work well, on both internal and external storage. I've tested it on numerous occasions. I have the Rogers I747M, which is effectively identical to the AT&T unit.
Use this link for the correct/latest version of CWM:

If you don't have an external sdcard, then you need to choose "backup to internal sdcard".
So I recently flashed TWRP and when i try to mount the the externel sd it won't check the box. So I can't save backups onto my external SD. I can access it fine when I connect using the usb.

From what we discovered. The newer version of TWRP is very picky on how the sdcard is formatted.
Go to "Install" and make sure it is point to /sdcard.
If it doesn't go to /sdcard. Keep toggling the radio buttons for internal and External sdcards until it pops up or press "Install" then back a few times.
You beat me to it! What I actually had to do to get mine to work was go into advanced and partition the sdcard, I made the ext-sd partition as small as possible since I never plan on using it. Once I did that everything was fine. Just make sure to back up your stuff because it will wipe your sdcard!

So I have EXT Size and Swap Size. Which one do I make small and which one do I make large? Also, do I use EXT3 or EXT4
I set the ext size to 128 and swap to 0, I also used EXT4. I don't think it really matters which one you use because you're not going to be using it anyway. EXT4 just provides performance enhancements over EXT3.

How did you manage to backup your SD card to partition it when in the first place you can't backup it because TWRP fails to mound the SD card!
I can't seem to get my SD card to mount either. I flashed TWRP last week. I just rooted my wife's old rezound. I tried all the fixes mentioned and nothing worked.
Sent from my Infected Rezound using xda app-developers app
TWRP keeps telling me it can't open 'E:' (when trying backup to ext_SD).
'E:' was the drive designation used when formatting the card.
How do we tell TWRP to just write the card that's installed in the tablet?
TWRP 2.8, KitKat 4.4, if that matters.

I my case same you just format sd-card in Primary partition no logical partition and then try again [Use Mini Tool ] Link:https://www.partitionwizard.com/download.html
I was originally going to post this under the developer section, but seeing how it won't let me post there until I've reached over 10 posts, (started new acct instead of trying to find old login info) I figured I'd try here:
I successfully rooted my device earlier and all is going well, but I'm running into a snag for backing up in custom recovery/flashing new ROMs. The recovery isn't recognizing my extSD card, but the phone when booted will. I've moved the ROMs to the extSD to save space and want my backup to go there as well.
Anyone found a fix for this at all?
What kind of sd card?
Check /mnt/extSdCard/
I've got OUDHS CWM... so depending on the recovery tool you have, it may be different for you.

FAT32 is what you need. I have a 64gb Samsung card and the same thing happened to me. Formating in the phone won't do it. I ended up finding a 3rd party app (EaseUs Partition Master - free edition) and formatted it on the pc (using either built-in or accessory card reader). Afterwards you'll have all the access you're lacking!!
Just confirming what the others are saying - if you installed the card on stock and then rooted to CM you will find that the card doesn't work but DOES still have data on it, if you want to get it off easiest way is PC/Mac otherwise you can format it if you don't mind losing the data.
I have an extremely weird SD Card behavior with my Note 2:
After deleting files and rebooting, the files reappear.
I can't format the SD Card using the Android OS - it goes black screen and requires me to pull out the battery in order to start the device.
I removed the SD Card and attached it to my laptop's SD Card slot and tried formatting using Windows 7- the format process completed after ~30-40 minutes, yet the SD Card appeared UNCHANGED!
I used multiple SD Card formatting tools, still no dice - they either complain about write protection, that they can't start, they start and stop halfway with an error, you name it.
It's like the SD Card has built in protection that keeps the files in it in stasis form, never ever witnessed such a behavior in any storage device. What gives?
Any help, preferably from people who may have encountered a similar behavior, will be greatly appreciated!
Bump.
Experienced this in my old motus.
Would love to see advice, just in case

I doubt the SD Card is corrupted, as I can read the files on it just fine, each and every file.
A VBS virus that prevents me from even formatting the card? Never heard of such a thing.
Has my SD Card became sentient? Are the machines preparing their assault on mankind?

Its not the problem of virus!
And you say visual basic script is used to create a virus?? Hell, No!!
Maybe it is the permissions in the sd card is not allowing it to format!
If your device is rooted and check whether it has ClockWorkMod recovery support.
You can use any other recovery. But ClockWorkMod is more stable.
Go to android recovery and flash that CWM.
And then go to mounts and storage > select format /sdcard.
Check if the format completes. If it gets complete, reboot your phone and again format in the settings.
If it doesn't help, after doing all these steps, now try again with some softwares on your computer and then try again.
Press thanks if I have helped you.

My SDcard just got worse.
Now it doesn't have a filesystem. Android reports it as blank, and Windows wants to format it because it has the RAW filesystem.
What's more, total space decreased to 30MB!
It's hard to lose all my multimedia files

OK, I have a backup image from CWM and Titanium Backup + Perseus CPU Governor, so I initially thought that they might cause this behavior, but it doesn't explain why formatting via Windows 7 seperately from my Note 2 didn't work.
I'm on stock 4.1.2, rooted, of course.

The android will surely report is as blank because you have formatted everything in ClockWorkMod.
Now all you have to do is go to settings > SD card and phone storage > Fomat SD card.
If it shows an error that "SD card is busy", then unmount it and then format it

I will describe:
- card suddenly unmounts itself
- Android remounts it and reports it as blank or having an unsupported filesystem
- went to Windows for confirmation, turned out that SDcard turned to RAW filesystem from FAT32
Basically I have a dead card.
