afreechart legend issues - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
I have been using afreechart to get some charts in an app I have been trying to develop (very very slowly). However I noticed that, when I plot a XYLineChart, the lines for each data series do not show up in the legend. See attached image. It seems odd, as it can get the info about the series, such as the name, but it does not display the line. Has anyone bumped into this? Any idea?
Cheers

what is odd is that I installed the exact same app with the exact same code to generate the graphs on a phone running GingerBread and the graphs and legend showed up exactly as expected, while they misbehave on ICS or JellyBean. Oh well it seems like nobody has any experience with this library. I tried to contact the devs of this library and got no response or support, so maybe it is time to consider a different way to display my graphs.
Cheers

I stand corrected. My apologies :good:

I am not sure if this is any use to anyone, but I found the solution and I thought I'd post it here for future reference.
The thing that pointed me in the right direction was the fact that the graphs would behave perfectly on the emulator, independently from what version of Android the emulator was running. That made me think that maybe the hardware acceleration (which if I am not mistaken was introduced with HoneyComb) had something to do with this. A bit of googling showed me that other graphics libraries had similar issues on ICS and JellyBean, so I tried switching off the hardware acceleration for the chart view:
Code:
chartView.setLayerType(View.LAYER_TYPE_SOFTWARE, null);
lo and behold, the graphs and the legends show up just as expected on any device.
Hope this saves some time to someone in the future.
Cheers

[Q] Shed's Gingerbread possible bug

Hello all,
I had to post this here since I dont have 10 posts yet, but I think I have found a bug related to Shed's gingerbread (v. 1.6). Well either that or something is wrong with my Eris. I have attempted to view the animated gif weather radar located at mobile.weather.gov/radarhl.php?radar=kbuf but it doesn't work. Can anyone verify this and let me know the results / possible fix? Thanks for the help!
PS - Shed your skills are amazing. Keep up the great work!
PSS - Sorry the link isnt a link above but my post level wont allow for links either.
I am at GSB v1.4 and I can see a radar map of buffalo, but it doesn't seem to be animating. Same thing happens for kvbx (Vandenberg AFB, CA).
I'm not sure it is a bug, it might just be a limitation on the software and/or hardware. Animated gif support is only recently supported as I recall and might not be at all on our hardware.
I took the OP here and put it up on the other thread for you.
Thanks Super_Dork_42!
The loop radar on mobile.weather.gov don't work for me either, but the animated radar on mw.weather.com does work.
Rooted OTA 2.1 Eris - soon to be Gingerbread.

I can see the same thing as you, radar picture with no animation. It was working on my phone at one point so I don't think it is hardware related. I cant remember if it was when I was running XTRAsense or Sheds GB v1.2.

No problem dude. It was just a few days ago when I couldn't post to that thread. I tried to make a thread for those that have fewer than 10 posts could post a question and if someone else wanted to they could quote it to there. It got deleted within five minutes because, while technically not against forum rules, it is loopholing them. Oh well, I can still do it if I want.
I understand why they did that, but I really wish that there was a way I could post directly into that thread. I think that I might get more of a response if it was where it should be. I really want to know what the problem is.
Just go post in the off topic section to get your post count up.

But he's right. Topics like this one have been discussed over and over again here at xda. If he had used the search function himself he would have discovered some "cool applications" by now. That's how we all acquire the software for our devices: By searching this forum and many other well known sources like the openmarket app store (once again easy to find using google).

good idea, bu might not work for those who haven't yet heard of this modern invention
Wow - old thread is old.
Hi! I'm a noob. Well, technically, I'm not; I just haven't been back here in many years since I first started poking at registries and editing the old wikis (now defunct, horribly broken, etc.), and finally needing to get work done and thus not wanting to play with my WM device very much and switched to Android not too long ago. But given this huge gap, I might as well be designated a noob now so I watched the introduction video (how awesome is that thing?). And one of the things it says is to use google, search, etc. Well, I've done all that (almost, still browsing this forum section and going through a different forum's software announcements, but I've seen more of Handango, pocketpcfreeware, freewarepocketpc and those lot than I'm willing to see again (thankfully, most of them have RSS feeds)), and narrowed down the list of several thousands of apps to... well, still quite a bit more than 100.
So another thing the video suggests is to find similar threads and read those. Here's the thing, though... those also tend to be old. I could find a thread that speaks highly of cLaunch even though people have moved on from that to SPB and then Androkkid or, etc. The best part is - it's almost impossible to untangle! It doesn't help that a lot of software announcements don't even mention what they're compatible with
( Nor that announcements also happen in the 'Windows Mobile Software Development' section. )
I still have to try the XDA Market (is it or is it not dead? The thread is stale. Did I mention the untangling issues already? oh yes, one paragraph back.), but it would definitely be nice if there were a place where those of you who still play with WM devices could discuss apps and come to some sort of consensus as to what 'the best apps' are. I do specifically mention that in plural because I know from my earlier days, and from reading a few threads last week, that people still ask "what is the best X app?" only to be met with "depends on your preferences" which is certainly true but there's always some apps that are going to be significantly better than others.
So here's my dilemma... do I hijack one of the existing threads (as I'm sort of doing now, but please don't see this post as my asking about apps - I'll do a proper post where I detail the apps I've got listed already, my preferences, etc.) or do I start a new thread?
And, of course, in the mean time... if there already is such a consensus-on-app-worthiness list that isn't 2 years old, where might I find it?
Again, not asking for input on apps - just some pointers on where to look, specifically, after having already 'google[d] it'. Then perhaps the next poor sod that comes along and has the same question has a better idea of where to go after his/her brain is filled with app references.
*resumes reading this forum section, then the 'Windows Mobile Software Development' section, and then that other forum*

Given the number of xda members, threads and posts, searching for any info here can be indeed painful, frustrating and often fruitless. I generally prefer google over xda search, but with search results limited to xda forums, so - assuming we search for e.g. "cool WM apps", the search string will look like this:
Code:
cool WM apps site:forum.xda-developers.com
I know it's not a big help, still, the OP question was sooooo general, I mean, for some the cool app will be SpaceTime for WM, while for others it might be Crayon Physics....
Went back here to update my post - hadn't expected a reply, thanks! ( yes, I did press the button, noob-introduction-video! )
Yeah, I did that - but that's a pretty hit-or-miss method at best.. there's a bunch of posts that say something looks like a cool app and that they'll download it and "have a think about it" (broken English ftw) - then they come back saying it doesn't work on their device (WM2003 for a WM6 app)
That's why I'm just going over all of the forum pages (got time to burn - that's why I'm poking at the old WM device to begin with.. it had been collecting dust)
Anyway, the update I was going to make was just to mention that 'XDA Market' does look pretty dead-ish (nothing recent in there, what's in there is a fraction of what's available, and it sure likes to crash a lot). It also looks almost exactly like what I'd need.. I'll have to remember that when I hit its thread here and encourage the devs to pick it up again.

not surprising, given that most of the hardcore HD2 users jumped ship to android, sooner or later WM will be as popular as Palm OS is now, anyway, if your're looking for an app to perform specific tasks, just ask, there is a chance someone might know something
Yeah - just a shame, really.. there's lots of WM devices floating around still that can still find use.
I know, possibly the best use of them is disassembly, re-use where possible (too bad the screens are always undocumented or there would be plenty of Arduino guys with interest in at least that component) and recycle the rest.
But I'm giving the poor thing one last while to shine before doing that (probably the next time I get a new phone, I'll give the store this one).
A functional 'XDA Market' would definitely have helped with that.
I wouldn't blame them if they did abandon it, though.. even Microsoft abandoned their own Windows Mobile market even while WP7 isn't available globally yet, and Windows 8-on-mobile is is sure to kill the WP7 store, too. They're good like that.
I'll open a new thread (I guess is the best option) when I'm ready for it - right now there's still plenty of hidden gems tucked away in these forums that I'll go to, first

[Q] Can't install apps to phone from Android Market website. Is it just me?

If anyone else is running MIUI 2.1.13 with the latest SiyahKernel, could you please try downloading/installing some app or another from the Android market website? Because I live in a 2g area, I have to download my apps from the website. Any time I try to search for an app in the Market on my phone, my connection times out. I have no wi-fi for the vast majority of my day, so that's also out.
I would really like to determine if this is a known issue or if this is an isolated problem. If it's isolated, I'll reflash in hopes that it will work. If not, I'd obviously rather not.
Did you look in that ROM's thread in Dev to see if anyone else reported a similar issue?
I searched the MIUI thread but didn't find anything. It's possible that I missed it, I suppose, but I don't know what else to search for other than what I already have.
Try to enable sync on all Google related services and then using the Market on the website.
If its turned off then it probably won't get pushed to your device.

Did you before you made this jerk response? Or did you just assume that help was already in that thread.
I made sure that all google services are free to sync as they wish. That didn't do it. I re-flashed MIUI. That didn't do it either, unfortunately.

New users come to xda and ask simple, common questions on a regular basis. It's not uncommon for someone with a low post count to dive straight into posting, rather than utilize the search button.

It didn't look like a jerk response to me. It looked like a reasonable response. He was merely pointing him in that direction to see if it might have been answered, especially since a lot of people on here don't bother to search.
As for the topic, my experience with MIUI is that all the apps never show up in the market, and is part of the reason I've never really stuck with it. It has to do with google not recognizing it as one of the standard UIs on their list for our phone, therefore not all the apps are shown. At least that's what I've seen explained in the past. Hope this helps.

Unlike your response, there was nothing jerky about mine. The guy has 8 posts. It's possible he might not have even thought to look where I pointed him. I said nothing derogatory to him. Any perceived jerkiness is in your head as evidenced by the two following posters. Don't bother with an apology as your screen name fits you perfectly.
Thread cleaned up...
Have the same issue as the author of this thread. Using Nexus S, Kalimchoaz's Rom v. 2.1. Does anyone have any solutions?
I was able to do it just fine on WIUI 2.1.13 -- I probably got around 80 apps that way. However, I was redownloading them and had previously already gotten them, so it may be different. I no longer have WIUI, so I can't check if I have your issue. I guess MIUI may be different than WIUI...

[Q] Anyone else have XDA Problems

Of course the XDA Community is the very best! But quite honestly I find the XDA site is really fairly low quality completely unintuitive software. I also can't find anywhere to tell some moderator this so I'm posting it here to see what sort of attention it gets.
In addition to the general functional shortcomings of the forum software I am regularly (as in more than 50% of the time) hit with the following madding problem.
There is NO SEARCH feature. Right now for example I have the site open in Firefox, Chrome, and IE. I'm logged in with firefox and chrome and not IE. I also probably have never even been to XDA with IE. There is no Search at all at the Device level (one up from this forum). In fact it doesn't even render the menu drop down button. At this Thread level the Forum tools only has:
Post a new Thread

As I said this happens more than half the time. I have of course tried clearing out the cache etc. Same results.
Honestly I find the search facility really doesn't work as well as I'd like. I guess that is because I'm spoiled by the heuristics of Google. But not having it at all is infinitely worse.
Does anyone else just not get any search options? Or is this just some black hole made especially for my torture? BTW, sometime later it will all be back and work fine - until it doesn't again.
If this were my site the missing search would be an indication that the back end search subsystem had failed and the JSP was smart enough to not render a search button. But I haven't seen anything to make me believe this forum software is anything approaching that level of sophistication. So I'm going to stick with my initial assumption - this is a big hairy BUG!
Thoughts?
I can't find the search either. Very frustrating. I just got a galaxy S3 and would really like to figure out some stuff without having to post new threads for stuff I'm fairly sure is common.
And..... Now it's working again.

[Q] Tracing Error Messages

Hey all, I'm not actually sure where to post this, so I'll give this subforum a shot. I'm a hardware guy. I don't develop, but I need some guidance on my research topic so I'm turning to those of you who know what I don't.
I'm working with a software deveopment board based around the Snapdragon II and I'm performing some tests on it. At the moment I can't divulge the nature of the tests, but I can tell you that I'm working specifically with one of the cameras. During my tests, I am monitoring the board via a serial connection and ADB, and I see errors pop up and the camera application crashes. I've uploaded a screenshot of the ADB output for those of you who are interested, but since I'm new, you can't see it. PM me if you want to see it.
My question is this: How would I go about figuring out where these errors came from? I'd like to know if this is a driver issue, an application issue, a kernel issue, or something else.
Thanks for looking!
