Would You recommend the Archos to Others? - Gen8, Gen9, Gen10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My mother has been looking for a tablet for the last couple of weeks and I have been
advising her towards the Acer Inconia A100 7" ($199) tablet or the Samsung Tab 2 7" ($249) or the Google Nexus 7 ($249).
Now she decided she wants a 10 inch tablet and I told her the price just jumped by at least $100.
But, yesterday I saw an Archos 101 G9 Turbo 10.1 on sale for $199 (regular price $349).
It's has a 1.5 GHz dual-core Texas Instruments OMAP 4460 processor and 1 GB of RAM,
A 1280 x 800 capacitive TN-type touchscreen
Android 3.2 Honeycomb operating system, upgradeable to ICS
Full HD 1080p video playback
720p front camera for HD video chats
8GB Flash Memory
720p Camera
GPS
Would you recommend this tablet? I have read some reviews on the net, but I would like some personal opinions.
What are the pros and cons with it?
She will read books, play some games, do some surfing and email. I know the 101 will handle these easy tasks,
but I would like to know will it handle them smoothly and be easy on the eyes.
Many Thanks,
Ian

It's a perfectly adequate tablet and you won't find anything as capable for the same price.
I had a 8" non-turbo but broke the screen, and was very happy with it overall; I will be buying my 101 Turbo in the next week or so as a replacement (I'm getting the 16Gb version)

I have used a bunch of tablets now. The archos is not as smooth as other tablets out of the box, and just adequate after rooting and extensive modding of the os. I recommend the Acer or Asus tablet, or a nexus 7.

Thank you for the info.

Well, my mother bought 2 101 G9 Turbos. She got them on sale for $199 (8GB) with free shipping, so it was a great deal.

Should I buy a Touchpad for android?

considering buying a Kindle Fire or a touchpad.. a used one priced about the same.. which one should I choose??

well the screen is not yet a problem to me
My sister-in-law recently bought a new Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 for only $399 during a sale. (including Amazon Prime free 2-day shipping and no tax)
That's only $150 more than the price of the average Touchpad these days. If I must buy a tablet with Android right now, I'd go with the Samsung as well. (average price about $450 right now)
Sure, I love my Touchpad, but only because I got lucky and bought it for under $100 during HP's firesale. It now runs ICS perfectly and I use it daily. No complaints.... but at $250? No, thank you...
Seriously, I'd go with the TP instead of the Fire - the Fire is nice, but it's still somewhat limited. Plus, Amazon's pulled some crap where they have apps specifically for the Fire, that are different than the rest of our Android apps, and they don't work as well as the standard apps do.
Plus, yes, then 9.7" size is quite nice, and the dual-boot is good for when you need certain features (Skype, a desktop browser, etc).
Op, Fire's 512mb of RAM is just NOT ENOUGH for an Android tablet. Damn, 512 is too low even for a phone! I think you should choose between B&N Nook Tablet and TP. Or, better wait for this $250 Tegra 3 tablet which one of manufactorers has promised on MWC.
well both tablet fit a flashaholic, if android runs on the TP flawlessly, guess I will go for it.

heh, I just got a G-tab for $299 refurb'd. it might as well be new though, because I can not tell that this thing has ever been used at all.
The plan was to sell the Touchpad now that I have the G-tab. But honestly, with the latest CM9 builds on the TP, it is really a great device. So I'm keeping both for a little bit longer to decide.
Anyway, Touchpad vs, Kindle Fire is a no-brainer. TP all day, any day of the week. The Fire is slower and has a lot less memory. My GF has one and it's great for what it is, but it can't compete with the TP. In fact, as much as she likes the KF, she told me she wants my TP if I get rid of it, so I'll probably just give it to her and install the kindle app on it.
Best advice I ever took was listening to my buddy who said "Go buy an HP Touchpad. For 100 bucks during the sale, can't go wrong."
Hell, this thing runs better than my laptop, and with Splashtop, I can even game from my desktop on my tablet. Or control my sound board. And my light board. And all other sorts of awesome things.
Yes because touchpad have best processeur dual cour (s3) with amazing price

not quite right... spec-wize.. the KF has a OMAP4430 which is somewhat better than the APQ8060 (same as the msm8260 without modem..) in TP.. the OMAP is A9 and has shared 1MB L2 with dual channel DDR2 Ram, but the APQ is a modified A8 by Qualcomm and has two standalone 256KB L2 with single channel DDR2..

There is 90% of my reason. I was one click away from buying a Kindle Fire. The other 10% was faster processor and more RAM. I even made that choice before I knew the TouchPad ran Android. And I was very satisfied with the elegant, intuitive experience webOS brought. The fact its also arguably one of the top 3 android tablets even still today is just icing on the very delicious TouchPad cake. Then the fondant flourishes on top of the icing is the dirt cheap accessories like the TouchStone and HPs own case.
The TouchPad is undoubtedly the best gadget purchase I have made to date.

[Q] Recommended tablet under $400

I'm selling my iPad 2 to my dad because I'm not digging it and want a android device with ics. Any suggestions?

And this is related with EVO how exactly?

I trust my fellow 3d users lol. I want a tab that has good development pretty much. I was thinking of a galaxy tab though.

Galaxy 10.1 has good support
Asus Eee Pad and Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime got also good support here
I don't know if kindle fire has ics, but it seems like a good cheap option. I have the Sony tablet s and it is a nice tablet but has horrible dev support. Not one dev has the tablet. So I'd recommend acer icona because it seems like a great tablet for its low price.

get the HP touch pad, it has a 1.5ghz processor oc'd runs ics soooo smooth, much faster than the transformer and other high end android tablets and you can get a 16 gb one for like 150. I'm sooo happy with mine. Kindle fire blows stay away from that the touch screen is horrible.

The TouchPad is nice - especially if you can find one for $150. It runs ICS pretty darn good and i'm quite happy with it. No major problems with the latest cm9 nightlies except for the camera not working yet, some random speaker crackling(which I haven't experienced), and lack of hardware acceleration. With that being said, where are they going for $150? I got mine for $99 at retail when they dropped the price but I haven't seen them anywhere close to this since...
Asus pad 300 for $399. Shipping April 22nd. Right now this is the only one I would get. I have an Asus Prime now but its $499 but I love it.

Putting in my 2 cents on owning a touchpad.
It's one of the cheapest versatile electronics since my hd2 as to future development.
Plus in the USA, on Craigslist they are usually under $200.
Been around using it over the last 6 months.

[Q] Which tablet to get?

Hi guys i need help/advice on what type of tab to get. I only got $250 so i can't get much.
Main things i want in a TAB:
Dual Core
Able to get latest android *SOMEHOW*
Good battery life
Camera(depends though not NEEDED)
The tabs i had in mind are:
Acer Iconia A100
HP Touchpad
Kindle Fire
What would be the best option of those 3 or at least something thats better or comparable and in my price range
I think you should wait up and read on the nexus tablet that's rumored. It is meant to be cheap but not have the BEST hardware add a result, but of course those are rumors

Capacitive, ICS Z& 1.5 Gig Cortex? Not bad
the resolution kills it for me
Circuit city.com is where I got mine from. After playing around with them I decided I had to have 10". If you can pull together a little more funds you can get a refurbed Acer a500 for $299 or a galaxy tab for $329. Or wait a little bit longer for the tegra 3s to come out and the price of the tegra 2s will hit rock bottom.
Kindle Fire...
decided to get a HP Touchpad 32GB for $200
ICS runs nice on it
thanks everyone

[Q] What's better: Nexus 10 or 101 G9 Turbo

What is better, an Asus Nexus 10 or an Archos G9 Turbo?

Build quality I give to the nexus, the archos however, can take a major lickin. And will still work.
Display I don't know. I find my g9 display fine.
Performance, I will give to the nexus as its a newer technology. The archos is fine for most tablet"y things. I use mine for navigation in my jeep, doc editing, playing some games, doing the usual forum reading etc.
Utility, archos hands down. With a micro SD slot, micro USB and full size usb, as well as an available 250gb hard drive, the nexus does not come close to the archos in this area.
Firmware, if you do not need the latest right away, then archos is fine. Serdu purdu has amazing sets of roms for our devices. I'm running his clean and fast from now and its great.
Btw, archos has the 10xs out now with a lot of new features plus a keyboard cover. Very cool device for the same if not less than the n10. Do a specs comparison of those two.

I recently got a Nexus 7 and it crushes my G9 80 Turbo with build quality, display, performance, and most importantly firmware stability. And it cost less then the G9.
I do not know why anyone would even consider an Archos tablet these days with all their problems; given that there are so many better performing, higher build quality, lower cost alternatives available.
Nexus 10 is 400$
Archos 101g9 is 300$
Sent from my GT-S5360 using xda app-developers app
Nexus is the better quality tablet without a doubt, it also has the best display of ANY tablet currently available.
The major drawbacks of it are no expandable storage and lack of availablity.
I had wanted a nexus 10 but couldn't find one so I ended up buying the 101xs and I'm pretty happy with it

I got a "first generation" 80g9 1ghz/512mb and only 8gb storage.
I found a used one, only 60 € incl a 16Gb microsd, so i couldnt lose mutch if it whas junk
I thougt it whas a cheap chinese tablet, never heard from the name Archos before.
Just needed something to tinker with and for surfing around the web and of course the gps function.
And i didnt want to spent top money for "a toyish" tablet.
O man what was i mistaken, in a positive way.
Its a joy to "play" with, everything works as it suposed to and smooth.
Had a view bumps with a firmware update but that was my own fault.
My next tablet is probably going to be a Archos again.

There new archos would have to be near flawless. I have the 80g9 and its laggy and slow. I have tried numerous roms etc to try to make it smooth but nope, and archos has no time to send out firmware updates. The GPS does not work reliably either.

[Q] Archos Gen10 80xs or Nexus 7 or Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7in

Hi Guys,
I would like to hear some of you opinions on which tablet to get for my 8 year old son.
I was looking at the Archos because it seemed cool with the keyboard cover and the price. I live in Europe and I want to only spend around 200 Euros. I am looking at used devices as well, in order to stay around the 200 amount.
He will primarily be using it for games and video (Netflix, XBMC, Youtube, etc). However, I want him to start using it more with homework, which I provide him with (English and Math).
1. The Archos Gen10 80xs 215 € with shipping.
2. I have found the Nexus 7 (32GB) used, but nice and in box for about 240 €, and brand new for 270 €.
3. I have found the Samsung Tab 2 7 (8GB) used but nice in box for about 140 -150 € or new for 220 €
If I choose used, it will only be where I pick it up and check the device and get the original receipt. We have 2 year garantee on everything here.
So which one is the best one to get?
His BDAY is March 6th. So I have a little time to decide, but if I need to order the Archos, I will need to do it soon.
Thanks a lot for any input you guys have.
Best Regards,
Rick78
For me, I prefer a bigger screen than the Nexus 7 and I want/need an SD card slot and HDMI output so the Archos wins.
The coverboard is quite useful, not as good as a laptop keyboard of course but does make typing faster than the on-screen keyboard.
I haven't used the Samsung so can't comment.
Sent from my 101XS using XDA app
I vote for the archos too. Bigger screen and expandable storage win. I have not used the 80xs, so I don't know how fluid it is, but it has to be better than my 80g9.

wil it support android 5?

I agree. The 80g9 is probably the best size for a tablet. I wish that archos would build a high quality powerful tablet with the 80g9 dimensions. Would be in my hands for sure.
