question regarding stock messaging app - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Probably one of the most annoying thing to me on the s3 is the stock messaging app. When you open it you are always in the last message that you viewed before, even if you just received a new message. I think if you get a new message it should either open in that new message or at least open on the main list of all your messages.
Is there a setting that i am missing to change it from always opening on the last message that you viewed?

If you closed the messaging app by pressing the home button than it will open at the same place you left last time but if you close it by pressing the back button than next time when you open it will open in the main menu...

It requires you to press the back button twice as appose to just ones with the home button but it is at least a work around. Thanks for the tip! I will just have to get in the habbit of doing that. Thanks again

[Q] How to exit Contacts

On all of the 2.2 ROMs that I've tried, when I use the back button to leave the Contacts app it does not close, but stays running in the background. Every other app closes when you exit via the back button.
Anyone else experiencing this?
How do I get Contacts to close when I exit via the back button?
There is no real reason this needs to be closed. If android doesn't feel like it needs to be and it's in the background... I cant see how this possibly could matter.
If it really bothers you, long press on home, task manager, kill it.
Thank you for the lecture, the correction. and for not answering my question
It really does bother me, shouldn't it work like all other applications and close when you exit via the back button?
I want it to close like all other applications when I exit via the back button so when I re-open it I can browse from the beginning of the list.

The reason it stays open is because its one of the main apps of your phone.
Once you open it, it stays in the cache, because when you press the app again, it can load instantly and come on.
Whereas, if you exit it, and re-open it... it will tkae about 5 seconds more. depends on how many contacts you have. It doesn't waste more battery, it just saves you the 5 seconds.

your question was how do you get contacts to close when you press the back arrow.
Rather than answer with "nobody knows" I thought I would point out that it doesn't matter, and it really should not bother you... BUT IF IT DOES, you can always long press home. Sorry for trying to help.
I think it does that on most 2.2 ROMS. On 2.2.1 it closes once you hit the back button. I have no idea why though.

I'm not concerned that having it running in the background is wasting battery, in my second post I stated why I want it to close.

Problem?

I'm using the Evo 4G LTE if that's necessary information or not... Lately for some reason, every time I close out an app and then re-enter it, it loads back up to where I last was or last thing done rather than the main page. For example, open facebook app, it takes me directly to the last notification I looked at rather to my newsfeed and it will continue to take me to that notification when opening the program until I look at another notification. With instagram, it takes me to the image upload screen, the one where you crop the image before uploading it; all the time. It gets annoying having to navigate back to the main page. Anyone know what's up?
Umm. It's multitasking...
Sent from my One X
How is that multi-tasking by, for instagram's example, sending me to the upload page of a picture that i've already uploaded? At that point I shouldn't be brought to that page again with the same photo after I've already cropped and uploaded it.
It's going to open up where you left off - that way you can, say, start writing a post with tapatalk, go respond to an SMS, then go back to writing your post without losing your progress.
Instagram is one app, it's going to behave how it's designed to behave. I would assume it's taking you back to that page because it can't really take you to the post-upload page. So it just goes to the point nearest where you left off... but I don't use instagram, so that's just speculation.

Your explanation is how I believe multi-tasking is supposed to work and has been but let me explain what's happening in terms of a message board. I click new reply, write my statement and then click submit reply, and i'm now back at the thread page. So in essence, if I now switch out of the browser then go back to it, I should be back on the thread page. But instead, it brings me back to the reply page where I would be writing my response before clicking submit reply (if that paints the picture anymore clearly).
It's not just with instagram but it's with facebook and a few other apps. After doing some messing around after reading your response I did kill the tasks, re-open the apps and they loaded to their default pages as they should. so it's something that's causing these apps to re-open to the last action you did inside the app rather than the last thing you were viewing in the app.
in phone settings don't you have the option to close app by long pressing back button?

[Q] Bad ergonomy of the back button in Android 4.0

Hi,
I just found a complain here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1820551 but not with not interesting answer.
My question is : Why Google change the way that back button is working when you come from a notification. Everything is writing down here :
http://developer.android.com/design/patterns/navigation.html
Before, when a notification fire, and you open it. Pressing back button take you back to the application you was one before you open the notification.
For example : You are browsing the web. Someone talk to you on GTalk, and you decide to answer. You open the notification, respond, and press back. The difference between Android 4.X and Android 2.3 is here :
On Android 2.3, you go back to your browser, continue to read your article
On Android 4.X, you go to the contact list of GTalk !!! It's just illogical ! If I press back button, I want to return to what I was going just before ! Most of the time, you press Back multiple times, goes back to multiple old conversation. Then finaly, annoyed, press Home, search for the browser icon, waiting for the reloading, and continue to read your article.
I made a little picture to explain the problem

[MOD][XPOSED] Disable keyboard auto pop-up

Stop the keyboard opening itself when you open an app containing text fields
Download at the repo
enjoy!
Awesome thanks, that keyboard popup tends to annoy the crap out of me. I'll check this out.
Now I just wish I could find a mod which disables the unbelievably annoying and useless "continue searching for network" popup dialog which shows up every 30sec when I lose signal (riding the tunnel transit etc) on my S4. If anyone knows how to disable that let me know!
Nice module ! was looking for this for a long time
The keyboard however doesn't disappear automatically anymore when returning to home screen by pressing home button or when long pressing home key for recent apps. Could you fix this please?
Edit: found out that the keyboard just doesn't disappear automatically anymore whatsoever
Thank you.
It's not working well, first time after device restart when I run app with text field it was OK, but second time keyboard displays and stay also after returning to home screen, as Benny wrote.

What is your hardware? I'm trying to imagine the problem this fixes. My 4.4.4/Nexus 4/CWM Recovery/Rooted/TouchPal X doesn't open keyboard until I touch text field.

Hi there!
Does this module stops the keyboard being shown again when returning to the Hangouts contacts list?
I simply hate this. A lot of times when returning to the contacts list the keyboard (SwiftKey here) simply shows up even without any text field over there!
Yeah, the keyboard doesn't show up but it also doesn't disappear, @hamzahrmalik
When the keyboard is up and I press the home button the keyboard keeps showing and I have to press back to hide it
But awesome module and it's exactly what I was waiting for

Works pretty well. I would like to see the keyboard not auto pop up in google now, and in the play store. Those are the only 2 things I've found it still pops up in. I never realized how annoying the auto pop up of the keyboard was until I saw there was a way to disable it :silly:

Just noticed that. It used to, was the main reason I grabbed it. Keyboard popping up when you just want to read comments is annoying, and then you have to hit back twice.
For some reason my keyboard doesn't auto close anymore when I leave the app that had an active text field in it. I have to close the keyboard manually. Ps I'm using SwiftKey
Yes. I think this need to be update.
It not auto shown. But once I really in chat and enter. The keyboard still there and I need to press back again to close it.
If not I cannot see the buttom of the screen.

Hey, this is a nice module indeed!
But I was actually looking for the opposite. LOL
Could you develop a module to ensure that the keyboard always auto pops-up whenever a text field is available on the screen?
Thanks
Doesn't work with Textra
In Textra, I turn off the quick reply pop-ups because I want to see the entire thread, but then the keyboard pops up blocking most of it.
I do like this module, but I wish it would work with Textra as well.

Same problem for me JB 4.2.2
Doesn't work for me on Instagram. So irritating that when I click on someone's profile, then press back, the keyboard automatically pops up and shoots me straight back to the bottom of the comments, and I have to scroll aaaaaaaaall the way back up to get to where I was. Maybe not a problem for some people, but when I do art features every week and get 200 comments, it's a great hassle. I was hoping this module would eliminate the fact that I have to use 2 androids during features, but doesn't seem to work at all. Huawei Ascend Mate 2, 4.3 stock rom

Odd notification pop up after oreo - text/email

Hey all,
My first post here but I've been using your help for MANY years now! Please let me know if this is in the right place or if I'm doing anything wrong.
**Okay so I cannot post my screenshot because I haven't yet posted 10 posts. How can I get this screenshot across to you guys**?
With every text message and e-mail now, after updating to Oreo, I get THIS type of pop up in my home screen.
If I'm in another app and go "home", I cannot use my homescreen until I acknowledge this pop up. I have to either press the little trash can or ONLY the BACK button on my Note 8.
Additionally, I stopped receiving heads up notifications for both Text and E-Mail but I fixed this using the Heads Up Notifications App.
Please let me know how I can disable this home screen pop up?
