Should i RUU before CM9? - HTC Rezound

I've been out of the scene for a while,
I haven't done any of the new RUU's and I'm also on a very outdated kernel I believe.
I'm running Viperrez 1.3 with kernel version: 3.0.16. S-OFF'd
I'm planning to install CM9 AOKP, should I RUU for the new radios, etc?
And if yes, if there are instructions on how. That would be great!

if you are s-off then i would say yes. update to the latest ruu.
steps for s-off:
download ruu
rename ruu to PH98IMG.zip
place on root of sd card
back up internal storage because the ruu will wipe it.
run ruu
first time flashing ruu it will update hboot and 4 other things and then ask for a reboot.
let the phone reboot back into bootloader and continue with the flashing.
boot phone once.
remove the ruu zip from sd card and place the this hboot on the root of your sd card
boot back into hboot and let it update.
boot back into you phone and remove hboot zip
now this part is up to you. you can either run the fastboot command to flash a recovery or find a recovery that is already in zip form to flash in hboot.
profit

Latest firmware is listed in the Firmware thread in the dev section, no need to run the whole RUU and wipe out your phone if you're s-off.

Flashing the RUU and wiping can avoid potential radio issues, though.

Help with upgrading...

I was wondering if someone could help me or point me in the right direction. I'm currently locked, rooted, s-off, GB firmware and radios (hboot 2.11) and running cleanrom 4.4 . I would like to have ICS firmware and radios. Reason for this is being on the ICS rom mixed with GB firmware & radios seem to cause alot of heat and fast battery loss. So what would be the best way to accomplish this? Any and all help is greatly appreciated.
Run the ruu if the firmware you like but be warned the heating probably won't go away
Btw look for the thread called "even newer leak 5/7/12"

So will that change the hboot? Also will it affect my S-Off?
it will install a new hboot and all... it won't affect s-off ever.
hboot-2.25.0000
radio-1.22.10.0421r/1.22.10.0424r
openDSP-v13.6.0.7611.00.0104
you'll have to re-install amonRA as well, but it all works great. join us on irc if you need more help.
i don't know what he's talking about with the heat, works great if you install everything kernels/radios..et al.
Go to this thread:

Download the appropriate HBOOT + firmware combo. Rename to PH98IMG.zip and flash via bootloader. It'll give you the appropriate version. You will lose your customer recovery so you will need to reflash that as well.

do the new firmware patch first, since you can't have two ph98img.zip's at the same time
after new firmware completes you can run the amonRA recovery install the same way (ph98img.zip file)
wiping is always a good idea when upgrading like this, to ensure no settings cause any problems.

You shouldn't lose root...I didn't...but if you do just run the "all-in-one- toolkit" and reroot it.
So he can go straight from a custom ROM to the newest leak update without having to ruu back to a stock ROM? Just curious. Is that a benefit of soff?

This is my process:
1) Was on S-ON, HBOOT 2.11, CleanROM DE with GB firmware patch
2) Got S-OFF, ROM ran perfectly normal still
3) Flash firmware+radio+ICS HBOOT combo
4) Reflashed recovery
5) Wiped and reflashed CleanROM

you'd download the 600mb 3.14 leak file, check the md5, rename it to ph98img.zip and put it on your sd card... reboot the phone to the bootloader and flash it (it'll take a while to flash, with an automatic restart or two)

How do you flash an RUU when s-off

So now that I'm s-off, is it easier to flash an ruu? Can someone explain?
I believe I no longer have to relock the phone. True?
Will either sd card be wiped in the process?
Can I go back to earlier ruu's if I want?
Thank you.

no you dont have to relock anymore..sd will be wiped as before..you can go to any ruu you like..flash process is the same for ruu
The only plus for an s-off device as fast as RUUs go is that you get not only to upgrade but also to downgrade, which on s-on devices would cause a brick.
So if say you tried the 3.14 RUU and wanted to go back to GB you sir can.

Ofcourse not, you've to flash the RUU from the bootloader.

1. Won't have to re-lock
2. It will wipe everything but external SD

4. Offical RUU's are .exe flies you run on windows while phone is plugged in.
5. All the leaks you put as Ph98img.zip 's and you put them on root of SD then boot to bootloader.

RUU
You would do a true RUU executable in Windows with your phone in fastboot.
The misnamed RUU's that are actually PBxxIMG's are flashed on startup into bootloader.
A custom ROM is flashed in Recovery with install from sdCard option.
Im s-off running Nil's business ics v2.2 sense 4.0, gb patch/sdcard fix. Ill be honest, the phone works absolutely better than ever right now, but, im intrigued by the fact that im still on gb firmware and may be missing out on the full potential of the latest firmware. Does the patch replace the need to upgrade alltogether? If not Is there really a big difference between gb and ics with the performance/radios?

The gb patch/sdcard fix is the same thing, right? I think the Aroma installer installs the patch..
Anyway, yes the patch corrects for the firmware/ics rom difference. The change in performance/radios is subjective. I didn't notice anything different. Of course if s-off, you can always go back. My recommendation is go ahead and upgrade. You will sooner or later.
Well for some reason if i just flash the rom without the gb fix the phone will bootloop, naturally; but when i flash the gb patch i lose my sd card. So i have another file i downloaded(i dont remeber where from) called the sd fix that i flash last that does the trick. Come to think of it, i never tried just flashing the sd fix in place of the gb patch. Now that you say so they might be the same thing i might just have the wrong gb patch, idk. Buuut, its funny, you dont even know me but its like you know me so well, lol. Im gonna go ahead and fix the problem at the source by flashing the ics RUU as soon as i get a chance tonight. Its inevitable, im curious and this will bug the heck out of me until i do it. Just like s-off did.

4B. While still connected to PC, go into drive mode and copy Amon Ra 3.15 flashable package as PH98IMG.ZIP to sdcard2, reboot to bootloader and it will flash recovery.
5. Reboot to stock ICS ROM, connect to PC in drive mode and Put Nils' Business ICS Sense 4.0 v2.2 on sdcard2,

I never used supercid on my Rezound or any other handset (I haven't been on the Rezound since March). Not sure whether you need to do it. If you're S-OFF, you should be able to run the RUU for your version of the Rezound. There are official RUU's available for the Rezound, which is more than I can say for my current handset.

S-off won't affect your flashing any RUU. Just download the RUU you want to run , put on the external SD card rename to PHIMG98.zip then reboot to bootloader. Press power to access fastboot menu , it will then find the RUU and read it then ask it you want to update. Select volume up to choose yes and let it do its thing. It should automatically run twice , because the first time it just installs the stock recovery, and 2 other parts. Second time it installs the rest including radio's and system image.
When finally done it should reboot and you will be on the stock RUU that you ran. After that , just reflash a custom recovery and either restore a backup rom or flash the rom of your choice.

[Guide] Quick And Dirty RUU Flashing for CDMA S-OFF Users

This is going to be a short and simple guide for S-OFF users that want to update to the current RUU level or refresh their phone because they are having issues like being unable to boot certain ROM's. You will not lose S-OFF by flashing the RUU.
1. Do a nandroid backup of your current ROM if you want to restore it later.
2. Download the current version of the RUU for your phone in exe or zip format from this page.
3. Run the exe version of the RUU in Windows or the zip version as a PG86IMG.zip file through the bootloader. If using the bootloader method make sure the file is named exactly "PG86IMG.zip" and placed in the root of your SD card before starting the bootloader.
There is no need to unlock the bootloader before running it if you are S-OFF and there is troubleshooting information in this post if you have problems. It may be necessary to run the RUU twice if you have a custom bootloader installed when it is run the first time. If the utility hangs after flashing the bootloader from Windows just cancel it and restart.
I recommend downloading and installing the OTA(s) immediately after flashing the RUU to get the most current firmware while still 100% stock, but the OTA firmware update(s) can be downloaded as a separate PG86IMG.zip file if you forget or can't do that for some reason.
4. Flash a custom hboot using the instructions in this post. My recommendation for a good general purpose hboot is the JBear GB 1.50.5050 version unless you are running an ICS Sense ROM like stock or Cool ICS that requires an ICS bootloader (1.57.xxxx or 1.58.xxxx).
5. Connect your phone to a PC and start the bootloader in "fastboot USB " mode, then issue the following command to flash your favorite recovery:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img (where "recovery.img" is the name of the recovery file in your ADB/fastboot directory)
6. Boot into recovery and restore a nandroid or flash another custom ROM. You may have to wipe cache+dalvik and restart recovery if you get any error messages from the recovery program.
That's it. You're now updated or re-synced with the current firmware, the hboot that meets your requirements and your favorite recovery.
Here are some additional links that might be helpful:
4EXT Recovery OP for the Evo 3D CDMA thread with a direct link to recovery.img in the download section (not the most current version)

No. That's an older GB level and the most current RUU for the Evo 3D is the 2.89.651.2 ICS version. That's the one I recommend.
Since he is S-OFF already it's easy to revert to a GB RUU if neccessary.

It's not really that difficult if you are familiar with rooting and flashing HTC devices but I can understand how it might be for users coming from other brands. Samsung in particular is definitely less complicated.

I flashed the above RUU .exe and I'll get to 10%, then my phone reboots (RUU program says "attaining bootloader" or something) and go into a bootloop. Is there a specific hboot necessary to run this. I am on 1.04.200 and s-off, 1.09.00.706
I also tried updating via the bootloader method as well..... runs well....updates like four of the ten check offs and then bootloops as well.
Edit: turns out I was flashing the wrong version, oops

From experience I've discovered that the RUU.exe utility will sometimes stop after flashing the stock bootloader if it is run with a custom hboot installed, which is why I put this comment in the OP:
If the utility hangs after flashing the bootloader from Windows just cancel it and restart.

I've had no problem completing the RUU.exe flash if I just cancel the utility in the Windows task manager and restart it.
Others have reported that re-flashing the RUU.zip file through the bootloader also works if the original flash is incomplete.
Also, make sure that you downgrade your hboot after flashing the RUU since the stock hboot won't boot GB or AOSP based ROM's.

Try removing/replacing the battery and then use the Power+VolumeDown buttons together to enter the bootloader.
The stock ROM has the "fast boot" option turned on in the power settings by default and that will interfere if you try to enter the bootloader after powering down from the stock ROM.

I honestly don't know.
There is a post by a cricket user in my rooting and S-OFF guide that says the customization is not lost for that carrier but I've never used Boost and can't speak to that.
Perhaps another Boost user on these forums has experience with flashing the RUU.

Using the bootloader procedure is, by far, the easiest way of doing the RUU process that I've encountered. From custom ROM, to stock, back to a custom ROM in less than 45 minutes.
ramjet, thank you for your contributions to our platform.
so my wife is hboot 1.40, radio version 0.97.... running a GB ROM. I need to update her EVERYTHING(you pointed me here) and get her on NegaLite BluROM. I believe I will need to update her hboot as well. At what point in this process should that be done? Do I need to be worried that her current ROM is incompatible with either the new RUU or the new bootloader? And if it is, then I just work through it all in recovery?
Very useful thread, and thank you very much, by the way.

so my wife is hboot 1.40, radio version 0.97.... running a GB ROM.

Is her phone S-OFF? If so, there is a link in the OP to a post that covers updating the hboot. If not, the only way to update the hboot is to flash a more current RUU.

Yes she is S-off. She also already has 4ext recovery installed.
Does this negate my need to flash recovery in the downloader?
Since she is S-off, this should be pretty easy.
I will still need to access the bootloader via Windows cmd, yes? Or can I accomplish all of this using only the handset?

Her hboot is:
SHOOTER XC SHIP S-OFF RL
HBOOT-1.40.0000
RADIO-0.97.10.0530
eMMC-boot

Is this a custom hboot, or stock? I ask because of the caution on the OP regarding custom bootloaders. And I am not sure because I changed her bootloader a week or so ago and had to change it back.

That's a stock hboot so you should be fine. You can still update using the RUU if a custom hboot is installed, but it might take a restart to complete after the stock hboot is installed.

[Q] Help with Rezound RUU please.

Hi guys
I appreciate if somebody can point me out in the right direction.
I just unlocked TWARPed, rooted, and S-OFF my Rezound (Verizon) and I want to install a nice custom ROM but it still on HBOOT 2.25.2525 and radio 2.23.10.0123r/2 and 0124r.
What should be my nest step now? Do I need to update the RUU and RADIO?
I have downloaded the Android police RUU 4.03.605.2 and as far I could read here I need to install it before install a custom ROM right? Is this RUU the latest?
Do I have to re-lock the phone to install the RUU even if I am S-OFF?
Can I use TWARP to flash the RUU and is the radio updated with the new RUU or is a different process to update?
I appreciate your help!
Thanks
My downgrade upgrade guide is what youll need....dont dload the 4 ruu.exe files...all you need if your on hboot 2.25 is the last 2... Follow it properly an youll need to reflash recovery afterwards

2.25.2525 Hboot is the custom S-OFF JuopunutBear Hboot and does not need to be upgraded (I've been running it for like a year and half with no issues on several versions of radio/ROM), also your radios are current so no radio/hboot update is required... Just find a ROM you like and flash and go!

Awesome, thank you
I was in doubt about the RUU because Nils' Business ICS 4.0.3 Sense 3.6 requirements says: Have flashed the 3.14.605.5 RUU or later.

Thank you REV3NT3CH, I will take a look on your guide right now!
Question for you guys, and I know it depends on preference, but could you point me out to some stable ROMs?
There are several out there and I normally don't mind reading hundreds of posts to learn the bugs and features but the amount of information about the Rezound it is overwhelming
I have CM10 installed in 3 of my Tablets but I also like Sense and don't mind using something different however I am not eager to try unfinished or experimental ROMS specially because one of the Rezounds stays with my wife, so a clean and stable ROM is the best option for us now.
Thanks you again!!!

You are already way beyond that...
What alotta people even android police confuse is that an RUU is not a zip file...its a windows exe program used to restore the phone....an OTA is a PH98IMG file...which the 2 files you need are the this 1st ph98img.zip and the this 2nd ph98img.zip and youre set

Although there are complete ROM ZIP images as well, even if all you have is Hboot & recovery and are S-ON, they will install provided the hboot is the same or older and partitioning is still good... The will install HBoot, recovery, radios, and system even if no system files exists. True they are not RUUs and do not perform a full system recovery (like in the event emmc is corrupted), but for many situations they are good enough.
