This is the way I've done it (both on T-Mo and AT&T, US anyway)
1) Find someone who is in good standing with T-Mo, who hasn't unlocked a phone recently, and who doesn't plan on it.
2) have them call into T-Mo, saying they have a phone for international travel, and that they are looking to unlock said phone to ensure that they can have adequate coverage if they travel outside of the country, using local SIMs.
3) have them give the rep the IMEI for your G1, receive the unlock code (WRITE THIS DOWN, just in case, ive had to re-unlock devices before)
4) Profit!
This is a typical policy for most phone companies to have, and they will often enough unlock cell phones for users if you talk to a rep without too much fanfare. Only thing is, you cant just call them up every time you want to unlock a new phone, so this person probably wont be able to unlock another phone for a few months.
If you don't have someone who is on T-mo, you may be out of luck, and have to go through the old fashioned methods of paying for it with a 3rd party service.
I was able to say that I'm giving my phone to a non T-Mobile user and T-Mobile emailed me the unlock code the next day

Thats EXACTLY what you do. A t-mobile customer who has a good account (which is 99% of customers) can get the UNLOCK code. It will take a bit, I just did it with someone and it took almost 10 days for T-mobile to get it. Tmobile said its something with the Mytouch IMEI numbers that takes so long. Ususally it take no more than 72 hours, but either way T0Mobile always comes thru. If you do get it it will be a 8 DIGIT CODE, any more or any less and u are getting ripped off.
ok, but after I get the IMEI... What I'm supposed to do with it?

The IMEI is actually a sort of "Serial number" for your phone, you'll find it on a sticker in the battery compartment i believe, you will have to give your IMEI to the rep.
They will give you an unlock code, which you will be prompted to enter once you put a non-tmobile SIM into your phone.
Questions should be posted in Q&A forums, not Development forums.

Anyone have any ideas on how to unlock this phone?
Dont worry mate..
The moment some one unlocks the first windows phone they would sing it from the top of the houses...
There is no way you would miss that
The Mozart I received from Telstra did not come carrier locked. It's my understanding that no WP7 handsets can be locked by the carrier, though this might just be a Telstra thing.

All the UK WP7 handsets are carrier locked, except the HD7 (as the carrier which has it provides SIM free handsets).
I successfully SIM unlocked my Orange HTC Mozart with one of the 3rd party online services within 20 minutes. Search the web.

Maybe its all those anti-competative names Telstra have been hit with over the last few years that has turned them around. Or maybe they just haven't figured it out yet.
Hopefully should be getting one of these phones today, just wanted to know if I had room to move. Cheers guys. I'll let you know how it goes.
Correct, Telstra aren't SIM Locking any phones anymore.
Hey guys thanks for the responses.
We got the first of the phones already and can confirm that they are indeed unlocked.
is there any difference between unlocking the phone from Orange UK and from web based unlocking people?
any idea about cost involved in either case?

Anyone know where to go for an unlocking code that works? I've tried several different sites and none of them can generate an unlocking code for the Mozart

he did unlock mine
the guy's name is secany on this forum
so u can send him a private message
Actually, don't have to PM me to check. You can check your phone can be unlock or not here:
http://www.nckzone.com/htc/index.php
Just type in your 15 digits IMEI and check, if it says Supernew records, then you can phone be unlock by "some" (NOT ALL) online service, I recommend here
http://www.nckzone.com , price is cheaper than other and most important is code comes in <5 mins.
If it says "No HTC tool is available for your IMEI" then you have to wait for about a week or two then try again.
Thanks Secany appearing on the horizon
I checked on the website mentioned secany and message appeared ""No HTC tool is available for your IMEI". But I found on this forum that Mozart can be unlocked. any body got mozart unlocked?
Like I say, some Mozart will give result supernew records, those units can be unlock right now.

sorry, hspl has nothing to do with sim unlocking. it allows you to install custom roms, which are independent of sim lock. sorry if you were misled.
the only options really are - 1- call tmo and see what they can do or 2- google around and pay for service; i remember some threads about the latter option here.
I think T-Mobile's general policy is that they will give you the unlock code if they have record of you having the phone with their service for more than 90 days. But if I was you, I'd try calling them before paying for an unlock code. It won't cost you anything to call, even if they say no they can't help you. And I have heard of people buying unlock codes and then they don't work. So if you do end up having to buy a code, I would say be pretty careful who you are buying it from, read reviews, try and find out their reputation, etc.
Personally I called T-Mobile and they sent me the code in a text about an hour after speaking to a CSR on the phone, and they didn't even ask why I needed it. But I had the phone for more than 90 days too.
i did call tmobile. only problem j have never had an account with them. they asked if i knew anybody who had a tmobile account where they could link the phone too and there for give me the unlock code. only problem to that method is that i live in a AT&T dominated area (we have 3G LOL) and i dont know anybody who could have tmobile. only sprint and att /:
hi xda developers!
my uncle sent me an xperia x10 which is originally orange locked so i want to unlock it to use here in philippines. i tried to bring it to the technicians and they're charging me lot of cost and i don't even have a visa card or credit card to buy unlock codes or software online...so can you guys please help me to sort this problem out? please
You can't unlock the phone. There is a software mod to unlock but not sure if you can find it. You will have to buy the code/unlock . I don't see anything else
Damn there was a site for this that was free! Only I forgot it... I will try to search for it for you!
thanks so much! will greatly appreciate your help to sort this out...thanks!
i just noticed, where did my other comment go? is there something wrong with my post?
Do you mean sim locked?
yes it is....
hey guys can you please check this out?
it says that it can unlock sony ericsson mobile phones for free but unfortunately i can't also download it here in our country.

waiting for the end of the contract
maybe u`re thinking about http://www.omnius-server.com/, but they can`t unlock x10, only 90% of se models can be unlocked for free by that site

is there any other way i can unlock my x10 for free?
Yeah, I think Omnius *used* to have an option to unlock the X10 for free during a promotional period about a year ago for a couple weeks. I'm not sure if they could have done any of the Orange branded X10s.
Unfortunately, Orange is one of the most difficult (and costly) phones to unlock. The absolutely cheapest way for you to unlock it is to call Orange and see if they'll be kind enough to unlock it (I think Orange UK charges 20-25 Pounds or so, unsure of Orange France).
Only other option is to go with one of the remote unlockers. There are a couple companies that can send you a code with your IMEI but expect to wait around 25 days to save a few (and i do mean, few) dollars.

no but service provider (orange) will unlock it for free after 6 months of contract.
hey
i just started browsing around for you and whenever i got a carrier locked phone i always used IMEI unlock codes
try this http://www.cellunlocker.net/blog/2010/06/how-to-unlock-sony-ericsson-xperia-x10/
thanks for all your response, actually orange uk is charging 20 pounds to unlock it but unfortunately my uncle wasn't able to organize it as it was already sent to me via dhl. i don't know if they will still allow it to be unlocked as it's already here in philippines. I've been trying to browse around the unlockers to get a code or software to unlock it but as what i've seen there are lots of issues like:
on htccode what i saw just now is their system is seem down as per some client's recent posts who are wanting to get their money back.
and some other unlockers offer the code but will have to wait for 5-10 days. i know this is absurd but i have an itchy hand now so i really want to unlock it really quick and use it right away.
anyway thanks to all of you... if i get to unlock this soon i will post it here.
Hi! I'm also looking for the cheapest code, but for now, the winner is mrunlock for 20 pounds... I don't know if I can trust it... Have you find something cheaper???
none of the posts in this forum are related to unlocking the phone - it is just a bunch of paid links for a "maybe" working unlock service
where are the applications to do the actual unlocking - why no one is giving proper unlocking tips ?
Please post here only if it is actually working unlock software or guide - NONE OF THE PAID CRAP PLEASE!

Read the other threads. The only way to get an unlock code for an AT&T Lumia 920 is if you are an AT&T customer and push the customer support really hard. There might be some other requirements such as being on a business account too. I am on a business account with AT&T and was able to get a 920 unlocked after spending an hour with the customer support.
Any site claiming to be able to unlock an AT&T Lumia 920 is a scam, plain and simple. Third parties MAY be able to after May 9th.
not a AT&T customer - T-Mobile UK
problem is that here on this site was always the place you can find the tools to free you phone but for Nokia Lumia 920 there no useful posts for SIM unlock.

There is no problem, there just is not any unlock codes for the Lumia right now. Unless you are an ATT customer and no longer under contract you will not be able to unlock your phone. Your best bet is to get a Rogers version which is already unlocked as stock.
As you said all the sites for the 920 are scams and those claiming they have done it are working for or being paid by those same sites.

I believe the point here has nothing to do with carriers, but software plug in to generate code from phone directly.

Nothing exists yet. Only carriers / Nokia has the codes at this point.
flash new firmware
So
Just to get things clear
say I have a locked Lumia 920 (EE carrier UK)
if I will flash a new firmware with NaviFirm+ 1.7 and Nokia Care suite
Like RM-821 GLOBAL WHITE SWAP (059Q5C7)
wouldn't it unlock the sim lock?

Firmware has no affect on the SIM. The SIM controls what carrier you connect to as it is the SIM that you actually are paying for in your contract. So in answer to your question, you can flash till your heart goes poof, it will make no difference. The phone will still be locked to what ever carrier the SIM was programmed for.
yes - flashing it not going to remove the SIM lock -already try few times
I wonder how many of you have heard of JTAG.
Too bad most people dont seem to know how to use it (or can afford that kind of equipment).
I would try to find a "unlocker" who you can actually talk too (face to face). I personally would use an online unlocker too BUT, it just seems weird having asian people try to convinve you they are american citizens, selling %100 authentic unlock codes. I also see bad reviews.
My Advice:
Look for some guy (or girl) who works at a phone carrier station store (one that sells multiple brands of phones). Perhaps they can JTAG Unlock or Factory Unlock your phone.
OR
Go to your phone carrier (not the one locked to the phone) In person, and explain how you have this locked phone but would LOVE to use it on their service. If they refuse, just keep asking "why not?". Try to justify your use on their service (meaning, tell them that they are supposed to be obligated to unlock).
OR
If you are really bent on getting a carrier unlock, go to the locked carrier and then tell them you accidentally purchased the phone second hand, thinking it would work with your network. If they refuse to unlock (under any terms or licence) then ask for a refund. If they refuse, then get mad. They just ripped you off.
OR
Contact customer support of the manufacter of the phone. Explain that both your, and the phone's locked carrier refuse to unlock, and you feel that their brand (the phone's) is really dissapointing to you. Most companies used to give free stuff to sad or rageing customers for free - perhaps you can get an unlock.
In the end: The truth will set you free. Unlocking should be free, but as time goes on, codes become more complex.
Good luck getting a free unlock. Im not saying its impossible, but it is all about time, money, branding, and customer satisfaction. And believe it or not, that all costs money. They (the locked carrier) lose money everytime someone hacks, exploits, or JTAGs their devices, which is why they usually come priced by duration of service or fixed fees.
Hope this helps. My texting hands are tired!

FINALLY!!!
Well, on my 4th call to ATT customer service I managed to get the rep to open a case, he gave me a case number and said I should be receiving an email within a week with my unlock code because I purchased the phone outright and it is not tied to my contract!!! you see, I dont have att service but my in-laws do, for a long time now....So, I called about 4 days ago and said I had a new phone that my children (impersonating a 60 yr old woman) bought for me because they knew how much I hated my current phone, so I registered it on my account and what not, then I explained to the rep that I was traveling to europe and that I needed to use my phone there with a local carrier because I did not want to incur any extra expenses with att, they then proceeded to ask for my IMEI and then to tell me that my phone was not eligible to be unlocked because there was an agreement between Nokia and att, I asked what should I do, that I couldnt believe that I had to purchase a phone in europe, that I was with att because of their 'easy ways' etc......I was transferred to another rep who just explained in detail why the phone could not be unlocked and told me that I should try to "rent a phone"......I initially stated that I was staying in europe for about one week and I was very very nice!, well, they would not help me. TODAY I called with a NOT SO NICE ATTITUDE, i stated that I was traveling to europe and would be staying for maybe 5 months, that I had called previously and was told that I could not be helped but that a friend of the family which was in my same circumstance, had his phone unlocked, so I was calling back because of this, because I had been with att for about 10 yrs and I needed to be able to use my phone, blah blah blah.... well the lady rep told me that my phone was not eligible to be unlocked (after i provided my imei), that I had not met the requirements for this, which were to have the phone for at least 1 year, etc.... I told her that the phone was purchased outright from my children who knew how much I hated the phone THAT WAS TIED TO MY CONTRACT, well, the rep started to get nasty and i did as well, I told her to transfer me to a superior which she did, then, I got a male rep on the phone who was very nice and basically explained to me in depth what this other lady said, I then said that I did not understand how other people that have not been with att for so long have been able to get the unlock code when traveling abroad, and I am not being helped, etc etc.... he then said that because there is an exclusivity agreement and the phone is tied to a contract that I could not have it unlocked, then I explained that the phone that I purchased on the contract was my older one, that the lumia was given to me by my children and that they paid around 500 dlls for it, that to please escalate this to the unlock team who sent my 'friend' an email unlocking his device, then the rep said that he was going to open a case to see if they could help me since i purchased the phone 'outright'!!
......SO, now I just have to wait!! hopefully it works out!!!!
SORRY FOR THE LONG POST BUT ALL OF THIS POINTS TO:
1) Find a friend or family member that is in good standing with att and ask them if you can impersonate them
2) KEEP CALLING THEM!!! You'll get there in the end..... It only took me 4 phone calls!
I will let you know if it works!!! :fingers-crossed:
p.s I just could not wait until May 9th, blame it on my ADHD!!!!!
