So I have an HTC ARIA that I planned on selling. Before I do was thinking of getting it rooted/unlocked and I am wondering if the phone can hand Jelly Bean? Thought it would be worth more?
oh, and I've tried to unlock with one of those online unlocking places but didn't work?

It would not affect the value of the phone
Root: www.unrevoked.com
S-off: www.revolutionary.io
Cm10 ofor the aria also has bugs. Some stuff isn't working. So to the novice user, they will think the phone is broken
aria already have a CM10
It's true about bugs. Especially camera glitches, they're annoying.
I still think the best way to sell an Aria (if Newbie), is the stock ROM. Maybe flash in the Liberated ROM. Even on a stable CM7 ROM, a newbie would still have a hard time.
Sell it simple
If it's going to someone inexperienced with rooting/custom ROM/recovery then they need a turn key starting point. That will allow them to enjoy then screw up their device without complaints at the seller.

The Aria can handle CM10 fairly well, but still has glitches, most notably in the camera, The link for the current and most stable rom can be found here.
As said by absolutelygrim, Unlocking and Rooting the phone doesn't change the value of the hardware. However, if you're selling to people who would want it the minute they get it in their hands, you could probably spike up the price just a bit.
If you're going to sell the phone with a custom rom installed, make sure you state that fact and that it's well documented. The most stable one for new users that's still custom is the Liberated Aria ROM (2.2.2).

I recently switched from a Droid X (running CM9) to the Rezound, and I am loving it so far. I have read all the stickies on unlocking, rooting, and installing ROMs, and it is very different on this device. I understand the general idea, but I have a few questions...
For one, I am accustomed to being able to SBF back to factory if anything went wrong with my DX. I realize that there is no SBF process for a "bricked" Rezound, and that there are ways to fix your device if something goes wrong. I am wondering if there is a way to actually brick a Rezound beyond repair by just flashing ROMs and kernels. And if this does happen, has anyone had trouble getting a new device from Verizon after using HTCdev to unlock their device? I realize that it may void parts of the warranty, but I was just wondering if anyone has actually been denied a replacement device because of this.
My last question is, does Chrome work on ICS ROMs on the Rezound? I've looked through a lot of threads for the different ROMs in the development section, but I have not even seen it mentioned. On my Tab 10.1 (also CM9) and some other devices I have played with, you could just change the build number in the build.prop to fix Chrome if it didn't work with a ROM. Does this work for the Rezound?

Bricking is pretty tough on this phone. I haven't heard of full on bricking yet.
Also haven't heard of a warranty being voided just for flashing ROM's, at least for HTC.
There is a Chrome APK in the Themes forum. Sideload it as the very first thing you do once you flash an ICS rom. After that you are golden.
Good Luck.
Anyone know when ICS is out for Motorola Razr?
What? You aren't going to find to many people in this forum that actually care about an ICS release for the Razr.

I am a almost 3 year Motorola user using that root/flashing/sbf process. I haven't went back to unrooting yet on my Rezound, but I can tell you it's a little more difficult to get rooted than the original Motorola Droid and the Motorola Droid X2 (which is what i upgraded from).
First you have unlock the bootloader. I did it the slow way step-by-step through HTCDev.com becuase the noob method wasn't working for me. After you get the files you need from the SDK Android app it's pretty much easy from there to unlock the bastard.
Flashing new roms is pretty similiar, but there's a hitch. Usually when you flash a ROM you have to flash a kernal that is compabitable with the ROM. Which means you have to do it in the bootloader instead of in Recovery. The only time you don't have to do this is when the ROM has a built in kernal (boot.img) and it almost flashes it for you automatically.
I'm very happy with my upgrade from the X2, but then again the original X had a lot more variety as far as development. The X2 wasn't very popular even though for a short while it was the best specced pure 3G device on Verizon when 4G LTE came out.
I've tried a couple ICS ROMs and for the most part they're pretty damn stable with a few bugs in them. Personally I like ROMs very polished with literally almost no bugs so I'm sticking with GB ROMs until something pretty polished comes out. I will be totally happy with my Rezound if we get a full or pretty close to a full AOSP ROM released under Ice Cream Sandwich.
If you have any other questions private message me. I've owned the Rezound for about a week now and have been happy with it.
Chrome shows in the market for ics running rezounds, no need to side load.

Howdy.. I just received my Amaze 4G from T-mobile two days ago (Free with contract.. caught the sale right before it ended!)
In love with the phone, it's my first Android phone.. and I really want to upgrade to ICS.. but there's a couple of things holding me back
I've noticed benchmark scores have decreased considerably for people in ICS.. is this simply a lack of optimization for given benchmarks or something else? How is real world performance compared to GB?
If I upgrade to ICS and wanted to go back to GB for whatever reason, is it possible without hassle? (I'm stock, s-on, locked bootloader) This is a major one for me.. I'd like the assurance I can go back if there's something I don't like about it.
Will upgrading to ICS effect my warrenty or insurance policy? I'm afraid that if I upgrade to ICS i'll immediately have a problem with my phone and my warrenty will be void for upgrading..
And last but not least.. will upgrading to ICS ruin my ability to receive OTA updates? When ICS is officially released, will I still get the updates or will I have to revert to GB and then receive the upgrade (See question about reverting to GB.. is that possible easily?)
Sorry about all the questions! I've been doing as much reading as I can, but these are the questions I still find myself asking every time I'm about to try and flash ICS..... thanks guys for any information.

Performance-wise, ICS is way smoother than any GB ROM I've tried on the Amaze by far. I never look at benchmark scores because I think they're bogus half the time.
Downgrading back to GB shouldn't be a problem since a lot of people are saying that the ICS radios are backwards compatible with GB ROMs, which is pretty convenient.
I believe unlocking bootloader will void your warranty but if a hardware problem occurs (eg. screen has a dead pixel, etc), HTC may still honour the hardware warranty since it's unrelated to software, I'm not sure 100% sure about this though.
Regarding OTA updates, I wouldn't worry too much about those since the developers here are always releasing ROMs based off of the latest firmware updates for the phone for us to flash so in one form another you'll be able to get the latest and greatest firmware.

Thanks for the reply! I wasn't planning on unlocking the bootloader.. I was just going to flash ICS with s-on and a locked bootloader. The major thing I worry about is that I see mixed reports about the new radio, some people having a major loss in quality/reception while others might ever report a gain! So I assume that the update to the radio isn't reverted if I were to downgrade to a GB ROM if ICS did not work out for me?
And I'm also assuming that if I do upgrade to ICS, that I would be forced to unlock the bootloader if I wished to downgrade back to GB?
Ah I'm so torn haha.. brand new phone and I love it so I'm a little weary with a "dont try to fix what aint broke" mentality...
my wifi is slightly better after upgrading, and signal is noticeably stronger.
After upgrading firmware I ran fourth bar fine, so going back shouldn't be a problem.
you shouldn't have any issues once you make the switch. If you're worried just waitt for ota

I was right there with you, ericdjobs.
I decided to upgrade due to battery issues.
Custom ROM's that are debloated and tweaked do help, but the warranty concerns and OTA issues do bother me, too.
Now that OTA is out, did you wait long enough to stay stock and locked?
My WiFi speed has dropped about 10mb/s but data speed has increased about 5-7 mb/s

Nope. It's not the rom that's the problem, its having that rom use a non stock kernel. To keep 4g, you would have to use a psuedorom that doesnt mess with the kernel. The only one still in development is MOF's 2.3.5ish rom.
But yes, the Photon is an amazing phone. Without a doubt the best I've ever had. And ICS is supposed to officially drop soon so that means our Jelly Bean and ICS roms will be working flawlessly. The only risk you run in ordering a Photon is that it might already have 2.3.5 on it. If this is the case, you wont be able to unlock thus unable to install any custom roms. If you do choose to get it, order it from ebay or something and make sure to ask the seller to verify it still has 2.3.4 on it by going into About Phone.
alright thanks for clarification
Great choice for you as you can have a very good phone at a affordable price. I am on Cm10 on my photon it's fantastic can give any 2012 phone a value for money competition

Considering it was released last week it's stable as hell. Obviously it'll take a bit to work out the kinks. Sending/receiving mms messages is messed up for some people, camera is a bit laggy, camcorder doesnt work, noticeable twitching in general due to the lack of 2d libs, overheats slightly, and some are reporting iffy battery life. But the exact same problems exist on our CM9 and that has been out for many months. Basically, it's about as stable as its gonna get without the proper pieces we need from Motorola. Considering they said the Atrix's official ICS build is coming in Q3 and our Photon is nearly the exact same phone, I would say we'll have the pieces we need by the end of August or mid September. Guess we will see. Congrats on getting such a good price!
Need help finding ROM with Vanilla launcher
Just brought Motorola Photon 4G on ebay and it will come on Sat or Mon! I also told him not to update it haha.
Meanwhile, i want a stable vanilla rom and this rom is close as vanilla rom. Can I flash that rom ? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1224896 Or any roms that have vanilla launcher. Not a big fan of ADW launcher btw.
Yeah you should be able to flash that, but it is kind of outdated. If you want to use cm7 you don't have to use adw launcher. Just download a different one.

Alien is quite dated. No one has worked on that since last year. Technically, CyanogenMod is vanilla android with extra customization options. Blows AOSP out of the water and is clean as a whistle. CM7.2(gingerbread), CM9(ICS), CM10(JB) -- take your pick! Id start out with 7.2 as everything works flawlessly. Once you are familiar with everything and are willing to deal with a few bugs but still stable builds, try CM9 or 10.
I have just ordered my first smartphone, a new unlocked AT&T Motorola Atrix 4G MB860 from Ebay to be used on Cincinnati Bells network. It has Android 2.2 installed on it now. I have found all kinds of information about updating to Gingerbread directly from the phone when I first use it, but thats where i get lost.
My Questions:
1. Given the fact there is no data saved to get lost should I update it to ICS or JB now?
2. Is there a need to upgrade past Gingerbread?
3. To do the upgrade I have read about com10 and all kinds of ROMs, EXACTLY what do I need to upload (given no mods are on the phone).
4. Is there a post that is pretty much "upgrading for dummys"?
I figured if i need to upgrade now is the time so I dont get used to one OS and then have to relearn another because this one stops being supported (like the Iphone 3G).
Given that this is your first smartphone, it would probably be best that you just use it as is for a while and NOT TOUCH ANYTHING until you get VERY familiar with all the options and terminology. Who knows, you might just get to like it the way it is. Not sure why you want to tamper with it already but it sounds like you are sure to be on your way to disaster with your current level of experience.

Its not that I want to tamper with it (infact i would rather not). Thats why I was asking the questions in advance so I dont find myself with an overpriced Frisbee. I have had the "old guy" flip phones for years but its time to get into the21st century.
I was just given an Iphone 3g locked to AT&T. I unlocked and jailbroke it but soon found that all the apps I wanted were out for ios5 not for mine. I bought an unlocked Samsing Focus S windows 7.5 phone on Ebay and LOVED, LOVED, LOVED it. With Cincinnati Bell though, half of the features wouldnt work. After talking to everyone but Bill Gates himself, I contacted the seller and they have offered me this Atrix 4G in exchange. I just Want to make sure Im not getting myself back into the 3G scenario again where nothing will download to it due to having an outdated OS.
It all depends on exactly what apps you want/need. Most apps should work on older phones too (no matter what OS or brand), I'm kinda starting to suspect you are mostly after very new stuff. It is true that Froyo is now considered outdated (heck, even Gingerbread is just barely hanging in there), and I suppose you can try updating through "official channels" (either OTA or a downloadable official firmware), I would just suggest you don't go the modding route until you're familiar with the territory. I'm not saying it's difficult or complicated, I'm just saying you have to know it.
Also, I'm not sure why you call this "your first smartphone" when it's quite clear that you've had plenty others...

That's less of an Android problem because of the fragmentation (probably the only good thing about fragmentation). I think around 40% of all Android phones are still on gingerbread, so developers aren't about to abandon all those users for their apps. The majority of apps work with gingerbread and you won't have a problem. The only app I have that is only for 4.0+ is Nova Launcher which can easily be replaced by one of the many other launchers that are compatible with GB.
Definitely just stay on GB for a while and use it however you want. If you start running into app compatibility for some reason, then you can look into roms. But I highly doubt that will be the reason you want a 4.0+ rom. After a full year on gingerbread I finally tried a custom rom. There is no rush at all to start changing things because it can brick your device really easily. Stay with stock everything and only think about messing with more advanced things once you actually require it.

OP, if I were you I'd probably go ahead and upgrade it to GB by the official OTA update process and try it out for a while till you get more familiar with it as ravilov mentioned. But that's just my opinion.
Thank you folks. Now I have a better understanding of the support of android. I think Ill do the GB
The apps. in question..... Weather, facebook, calendar ...... As far as the first smart phone.... Doesn't the newest official AT&T firmware overwrite your bootloader making it impossible to tamper with it later on? Correct me if I'm wrong, since I might be mistaken. (I unlocked it the second I got my phone and haven't looked twice at any official firmware since then)
@ OP: I don't know you, so I don't know how computer literate you might be, but if you feel like up to the task, I would recommend unlocking the bootloader AND then staying on the official firmware (through the use of fruitcakes or Blur based ROMs), so you can get used to everything with as few bugs/quirks as possible. If you later decide to upgrade to more up to date firmware, then you'll have that option as well.
IF you're not very good with computers and other gadgets, then I would suggest you just leave it be and stay on the official firmware. But to make this choice, you need to be honest with yourself as to whether you're capable or not of doing it. How to use custom software on your phone isn't some well guarded secret or anything particularly complicated, it just requires for the user to do A LOT of reading so they understand exactly what they're doing, otherwise it's a recipe for disaster.

It is uncertain really. There are some indications that the bootloader in .145 is not really changed compared to the .141, but I guess the safest thing for the OP to do is to update to .141 if possible. I've also never had anything to do with official updates so I don't really know how it goes. This phone got rooted pretty much as soon as I got it and unlocked and flashed only days later.
@OP,
You certainly have a very strange and uncommon definition of "my first smartphone". Like, this Atrix that I'm holding right now is totally my first smartphone in the last hour...
BTW, a smartphone is not defined by "a phone with the smartphone service", in fact in most countries (mine included) such a concept doesn't even exist.
Also, all of the apps you mentioned should work perfectly on Froyo or at least on Gingerbread.
I decided to come back from WP, mostly because the phone I have lacks an LED notification light (yeah, it's a big deal for some of us).
Anyways, I picked up an Amaze 4g off of ebay at a decent price, but would like to return it to stock before I decide about custom ROM's and such.
I have a reasonable amount of experience flashing ROM's on other android phones, and so on, but I've never used the Amaze and it's already on CM. Basically, I just want to make sure I know the basic approach of flashing it back to "stock", while maintaining the ability to root and unlock it.
Here is the current description:
Android 4.1.2
Baseband 1.15.550L.....
Kernel 3.0.57......
Cyanogen Ruby 10-20130728 Nightly
I'm basically just hoping someone could politely nudge me in the right direction on how to approach this. If it had been my phone from the start, I'd be very comfortable, but I honestly don't know where to start when it's one I've never used, but already unlocked, rooted, and on CM . Is the amaze even fully supported and bug free on CM?

It arrives tomorrow, but as it's an unlocked, t-mobile branded model (that has proof of running on AT&T as well), and is on Cyanogen already, I would expect that it is either both already, or capable of doing both without an issue.
I will post back when I check if S-Off is set to permanent, and if supercid is currently installed. I assume root and CWM are a given, but I'm not familiar with the custom kernels and basebands for the Amaze, so aside from what I posted above I'm not sure I know what is considered stock at the firmware level, and what is considered custom, or if it matters when it comes to the Amaze.
Hopefully I can return to at least to a stock ROM and go from there, so I know that everything works as it should, before thinking there's a defect that is really just a bug related to how the previous owner set it up. I should have asked him to set it back to stock + S-off/root, but the price and condition were right, so I didn't want to ask for more than what I paid for.
Thank you,

It arrives tomorrow, but as it's an unlocked, t-mobile branded model (that has proof of running on AT&T as well), and is on Cyanogen already, I would expect that it is either both already, or capable of doing both without an issue.

well if it worked with AT&T it means its been super cid to super cid it has to be S OFF thats my guess , well if its s off all you have to do is run a RUU and you'll be in stock firmware

Thanks for your help!
Update:
Yep, it was s-off, super cid, and 4ext, all ready to go. Thanks again. I'm not used to HTC so I wanted to be extra careful and know what to look for. CM 10 didn't allow for BT calls, which is odd, but a deal breaker because I pretty much only use BT for voice, so stock is working out very nicely. Sense is actually better than I expected, or at least the modified Afnan tweaked one I installed. It's very fluid, and has good access to the controls I need. I had to tweak all of my other devices a lot more, to get the same functionality. I slapped on Nova launcher, tweaked it a bit, and I'm really liking the Amaze.
The one odd thing is that BT is terrible if I have the phone more than about 3 inches from my head. I'm guessing my case has issues, but haven't tested it without it yet.
