Please Help - Rooted Evo 3D (2.3.3/ 1.13) ---> ICS? - HTC EVO 3D

What would be the best way to update both the software and to ICS? Through a rom or another form?

Find a rom in the development forum that you want, and flash it, simple as that. Most ICS roms work fine with older firmwares such as yours. If you want straight up stock, no tweaks or changes, check out virus's thread, he has stock roms with root access, if you want a different ICS rom, by all means go flash one. The worst that can happen is it doesnt boot/gives you bootloops, in which case you just flash a rom you know works, or run the ruu and start from square one again. No harm no foul

Thanks for the quick replies. I was only asking because I've had this evo rooted since day one using the Synergy ROM and Ziggy's OC kernel and I haven't had any problems, at all. Looked into some new roms over time that seemed to be "based" off of the the newer sprint shooter software, so I didn't know if I had to manually updated to that version first as I am still on 1.13 and not 2.08 etc. Finally, will this change my Hboot? (I'm on 1.4)
Also, do I need to revert kernels first? Since this one probably wont work with ICS

All it is, is just software, hboot and radios don't really have to do much with Sprint stuff. Most ics roms have intentionally been modified to work with older softwares

Ok, silly questions, unlocked, s-off now ready to flash

Ok I'm all set now, I got everything flashed, but now I sill have question.
I started with the ENG H boot then I wen to the safer hacked one.
I'm looking for ROMS now and they have a PH98IMG file. Is that the kernel or updated firmware? I wouldn't want to flash different firmware right?
also what about the old firmware patch for ICS roms?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1614180
Do I need to be using that as Im still on the GM H boot?
and finally what about mainver errors? since Im s off will that still warn me?
I just want to be careful not to do anything I shouldn't now that most of the safety nets are gone.
Also sorry of my questions are silly, its late at work and I've been starting at this screen all day. Its time to go.
thanks

ROMs generally will never have firmware present unless it specifically states otherwise (perhaps somebody will release one after an OTA if there's a new firmware update). Prior to last week, we all had S-ON (well most of us) so all ROMs came with a script that would dump the boot.img (kernel and RAMdisk) into a PH98IMG.zip, then reboot to bootloader so you can flash it.
Use the old firmware patch for ICS ROMs only if you are on HBOOT 2.11 or lower.
I'm not sure about mainver issues... I don't think they matter now... but if you do get that error there's a simple fix thats been around for awhile.
I am on 2.11 so I would need the patch. Is it ok to use even it I'm not on am ics Rom, should I flash it just in case or wait until I need it.
Yeah I was kinda thinking the same thing about the mainver. Not sure either though

The patch is apart of the system so you only flash it when you are going to run a ics Rom based on the ics firmware. You already have the patch files in the Rom you are running if its GB. But when you flash a new Rom the system is wiped which is why you need to flash the patch. I hope I explained that ok.

I understand, its ok. You right though dont know what I was thinking, of course the system gets wiped.
Im debating which ROM to run now. I was going to go with one of the BAMFs, but I also would mind a senseless ROM either.
Is it wrong that I actually kinda like Sense, I just wish it didnt bog the phone at times.
Also I thinking its probably best to say on the 2.11 firmware, that way I can still run GB if I want and go to ICS ROMS too if I want with the patch.
I like sense too especially since this is my first HTC phone so its something different for me. I had Motorola's in the past. I'm on GB firmware with the eng hboot and running ics Clean Rom.

Well Sense is certainly an upgrade for me from TouchWiz....I miss a few things but overall it is better...
I think you would be happy with CleanROM, extremely fast and reliable ICS build. You would never know it wasn't stock.

You have to be rooted to acquire s-off. Up until this point you had to be unlocked to acquire root. Now, if you are s-off you can root without unlocking. It's a vicious circle! Lol!

[Q] ? about wanting to run ICS VM leak

Ok so i have been out of the ROM loop for a bit, so i figured i would ask questions before trying to do so. I am wanting to run the newest ROMs running the leaked ICS VM base, but everywhere i see, it says to upgrade your firmware? I've looked all over the place and have yet to see the upgradeable firmware i need to do so! Can anyone please clarify this for me or at least point me in the right direction.
You don't need to upgrade anything. I'm on the original firmware and the only thing that was working, but has since stopped was the camera. I also haven't updated the rom since it was released, so that could be the problem. I did run into a problem when I first installed it. Using rm -rf instead of formatting the partitions did not work. It kept boot looping, but changing it back to format worked.

well see my issue now is that i flashed it just fine like i would any other ROM (no FW upgrade) but it sits on the splash screen. this now happens with ALL ICS ROMs. at first they randomly rebooted but now the only ones that work on it are older ROMS (GB, FROYO) but ICS will not boot. i guess i might have to wait until the offical release hits for us

DO NOT FLASH THE VIRGIN MOBILE FIRMWARE / VIRUS!!!!!!!!
As for the bootlooping, if you are hboot 1.5 s-on, then ICS does that unless you use Chad's kernel (which breaks USB and 3d camera). I recommend you get s-off by downgrading to hboot 1.4 or use the wire trick. See my signature or the stickes in the cdma development forum (assuming you are CDMA) for more information.

Calm down bud. There is no virus but he is correct. Do not update if you have hboot 1.5 if you are s off then fire ahead using the update package from freeza. Then use the mod to convert it to sprint. After that go be flash happy.

I'm not the one who called it a virus - many of the devs who worked tirelessly trying to rid our phones of that firmware coined that one. From what I've read throughout the forums, I would highly recommend against flashing that, even using the mod to convert it to Sprint. Every ICS ROM I have tried (CDMA) has ran fine using Freeza's all in one version 2.17.

Could be only s-on people had issues removing it, but I personally would not risk it. The ics roms all work fine without it if you are s-off. Deadlocked I am genuinely asking (seriously not trying to be argumentative): what benefit you see from using it since afaik, there is none.

HI i'm kinda a noob on this stuff (but learning) ...anyways
I can't seem to be able to get ics on my evo 3d .. it's a sprint cdma version it's got s - off all I want is a kool rom/kernal with the following
i think the problem is that im using gsm roms/kernals (why can't developers put that in their descriptions)
I'm looking for the following features
(CDMA)
I.C.S.
3d camera
over-clocking
battery saver
full beats audio
and some kool eye candy
i tried many roms and kernels but nothing works.. either the phone freezes at the first htc screen .. or it goes to the first htc screen vibrates and then reboots in a loop (i found a few were gsm such as king cobra)
i tried the fastboot method .. clockwork mod...and 4ext.. nothing works ... am i loading the wrong kernal/roms... mabe someone can point me to what im looking for ?
can anyone help me ?
thank you so much

Maybe we can see what you did wrong.
The first post has enough information. Sprint is CDMA, King Cobra is GSM. You need a ROM from the CDMA development forum.

Go to the EVO 3d cdma development. The gsm and cdma sub forums are split. I'd recommend using the kernel that comes with the Rom. And no, you can't use any kernel with any Rom.
Just find a Rom that you like and flash it. Don't worry about kernels as much.

If you really want to tweak your system and stuff, you can get the Anthrax kernels (search google). Though you have to sign up to their forum. Also, make sure you read which version the kernel is for. No every kernel cannot work for every version.
can i do this?

ok its a sprint evo 3d flashed to boost
on that link it says -- 1.2.17.651.5 ROMs need the latest firmware. See freeza's all in one firmware update if you haven't done that already. If you unlocked via the HTC method, you know the drill: you'll have to take the OTA and then re-unlock.--
the thing is most of the features i want are handled by the kernel such as o.c / battery saver / beats / ect... thats the only reason i want to change my kernel
heres the question,,, being i originally did the htc unlockr which made it s-on then did the wire trick and made it s-off will i still need to unlock the phone then relock it ..see here is the problem we found that when we did the wire trick i had to reflash to boost it reset the sprint info (at least that what we think happend) ... and this is not an option right now (the guy that did it for me is at school)
is there a way i can install the freezas firmware..anthrax kernel(which it requires) and the mean rom with out having to reflash boost?
If you are already s-off, then no do not relock. I would really suggest you just start all over. Because if you keep on flashing you could mess it up.
Just take thr ruu for your phone version and start over. You may loose root. But i believe you will still be s-off.
Root again then install recovery, make backups, wipe everything in recovery, then install the rom.
By the way you will have to use joeykrim's flashimageGUI app to flash the kernel before the rom IF you are on1.5 hboot. If you are 1.4 hboot disregard.

Like I said, I think ou should start over. Take the 2.17 ruu.exe. I also suggest you downgrade via the "bricking" method and then root using revolutionary.
If you don't want to do that then, root with htc method. And do not install the boost firmware! Install recovery, make backup, use flashimageGUI or 4ext. And install rom.
You have to do this on 1.5
If you downgraded to 1.4 then you can disregard flashimageGUI
I think your problem is that you flashed the boost firmware. You could have kept the original meanrom and nothing would have happened.
Just start over.

New OTA 2.13 Root via HTC Dev

Due to WiFi issues on the release day OS, I took the 1.22 OTA and screwed root. I knew it would happen but the fixes outweighed the issues. I waited to see if root would be achieved via Regaw or the like since I didn't want to lose any of my configuration. Now... Sense 4.1 was just too tempting to pass up and since I wasn't rooted anyways, I went for it.
I decided to attempt root and start from scratch anyways as I was having random app issues and some bloat problems.
The root method from HTC Dev worked flawlessly on the new new OTA and I was able to load TWRP and SuperUser via fastboot (instructions can be found by searching as I did).
So now here is the question: where does this leave me as far as flashing ROMs... Obviously I am aware that I am S-On and know those limitations. My issue is if and where any limits may apply now that I am HBOOT 1.19. Will I be stuck with only 2.13 ROMs that we're built based on the new HBOOT or can I flash any Rom based on 2.13 (or even older revisions)? I cant risk bricking so I am asking to be cautious as well as your answers providing any new users coming in with new phones running the latest OTA.
Thanks
Why did HTC update hboot 1.15? Because they discovered an exploit flaw that we could gain S-OFF with, which is FAR better than being on HTC Dumlock. If you are not concerned with obtaining S-OFF via LazyPanda and the like, this should not be a concern.
Also, being on the new hboot means that backwards compatibility to ROMs that are not based on the new OTA could become an issue.
Sent from my LTEVO via XDA Premium
New h boot for you only means that you won't be able to get s-off for a very long time probably since nobody has figured out how to even s-off h boot 1.15 yet. You shouldn't have an issue flashing any rom from my understanding as long as it's through recovery.
Edit : I would listen to Michael on this one regarding ROMs sounds like he knows more lol.

Yes, you will be stuck flashing 2.13 roms with the 2.13 kernel. However, you can use one of the workaround methods (fastboot, flash image gui, twrp dumlock) to flashing an older kernel, and then flash roms based on a previous OTA base.
A ROM doesn't include an HBoot though, so there shouldn't be ROM/HBoot compatibility issues, right?

I don't think that's quite right (I could be wrong though).
If he wants to flash a JB-based ROM, he will definitely have to flash the boot.img separately via one of the workarounds mentioned.
If he wants to move between Sense-based ROMs, he *might* be OK. But he will not get any tweaks the dev may have made to the kernel included with his respective ROM.
I was referring to the question above me that asked about ROMs interfering with hboots
Having an old ROM on a new hboot won't cause issues.
Naturally, you need to have a working kernel for your ROM. So yes, you'll need to make sure you have the right kernel.
If he goes from any ROM to a ROM on a different base you'll have to install the correct kernel. . But I don't think that's what he was asking

Correct me if I'm wrong, but, a ROM includes a Kernel, so when you flash a ROM you're swapping kernels.
The only kernel incompatibility would be if you flashed a ROM then flashed a Kernel, then you have to be careful.
If anybody is absolutely certain that this isn't the case and not just guessing, let me know and I'll stand corrected.

That's true for 1.12, since it allows you to flash kernels through recovery. The newer versions don't. That's the reason for using the fastboot or dumlock workarounds. That being said, I haven't heard anyone confirm yet that these methods still work on 1.19...I'm interested to know.

From what I can tell... No. You have to run HTC Dev first in order to get to where you can load a recovery program at which point you will have already had to wipe your phone to factory defaults.
It's unfortunate and the main reason I waited so long to unlock this way but as previously stated, Sense 4.1 was too hard to pass on

Yes, every ROM includes a kernel.
But Hboot 1.15 and above do not let you flash things to the boot partition in recovery. The kernel goes in the boot partition. So you can't flash kernels normally through recovery.
If your on a sense ROM and flash an AOSP rom, the phone wont boot
If your on an AOSP ROM and flash a sense ROM, the phone wont boot
If your on an old base and flash a new base, the ROM will have issues (if it even boots)

I am amazed at how many girlfriends have their boyfriend's phone and update things... I'm beginning to think it's the same cover up as when people say, "so I have this friend who... Blah blah blah..."

New radio etc

I have a question.. I am s on hboot 1.15 htc dev unlocked. I want to run meanrom 3.6 but it is based off the new update. I have read you can use fast boot or flash gui to flash the kernel and than flash the Rom after that. Question is.. Is this true for my setup and is there any concern about not having actually updated everything on the update? I read stuff about a Rom or base mismatch issue..Thanks for any help..

You got it...just fastboot flash the boot.img from the ROM, then flash the ROM in recovery and you should be all set. You shouldn't need to install the latest firmware for it to work, but it's probably recommended. That being said, since you're s-on you won't be able to anyway. Should be fine with just the kernel and ROM.

If you are having issues though before you decide to take that awful journey of relocking unrooting to take that ota stop and think of the consequences and the possibility of never being able to obtain s-off...from what im reading the new base aint that exciting anyways

time for shameless self promotion, albeit very late. i have written a short guide that explains most of the basics for flash root and recovery and i will probably update it with basic troubleshooting scenarios but then again i may not but its very thorough information

The new radio kicks but. Solves most or all problems with LTE. The dream of s-off for hboot 1.15 is a fantasy. Even the developer for Meanrom decided it wasn't worth waiting for an s-off that will probably never come and took the latest ota to bring his new phone up to date with the complete firmware package. Mikey was s-off and completely bricked his phone by accidentally putting the old firmware zip on his sdcard and flashed it. His replacement phone came with 1.12 and instead of going with s-off he decided to take the ota and keep it s-on. That way, he will have to flash just like the 1000 other users that use his rom. Yes, I am happy I am s-off, but if you aren't, you might as well get the full use of your phone and take the ota, unlock your phone again, and install MeanRom.
Those people that chime in and say the latest ota isn't worth it sure haven't tried it. This phone is so smooth now it is indescribable. The radios alone are worth it, but HTC did a great job with this update. Sense 4.1 and Android 4.04 are a grat combination.

Are you still s-off with all the latest firmware and base Rom?
