[Q] Moving to SD card or "internal' memory - HTC Rezound

Keep seeing that more and more apps are allowing the option to move to SD. Is there a reason no to do this?
Don't quite get it, but a 30mb app went down to 5mb by moving it.
In there a rule of thumb of when/why to move to the SD card vs using the internal[?

You lose certain features when you move an app to SD. Widgets and anything that needs an "on boot" alert are the biggest things affected. Things that need to be available at boot time as defaults (like keyboards) shouldn't be moved either. You have to ask yourself what do you gain by moving. If you have enough internal app space, the answer is generally nothing. Most apps use the SD card for data storage even if they're running from internal, and internal is usually quicker than SD. If you do want to move things, grab the App2SD app so you can see on a per-app basis exactly what will be affected by moving the app, but I just leave things alone...there's generally no benefit to moving on newer devices with plenty of app space.

[Q] Rooted but can't move apps to SD?

Hello,
I have a Streak with the 318/12821 build. It's rooted and has busybox installed, but I am not able to move many of my apps to the SD card. I have an Aria in which I am able to move all of the downloaded apps to the SD card, but on this Streak, it is still very limited. More apps have the move to SD button grayed out than allow it.
Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks!
Unless I'm mistaken, it's actually something that needs to be enabled by the App developer. You can't (again, unless I'm mistaken) forcefully move any app to the SD card unless it's been coded to allow it.
The Apps2SD feature is relatively new so not all apps have been re-coded to enable it.
Personally, I don't understand why people want to move their apps to SD card. Unless you fill up your apps list with loads of crap, there should be plenty of room on the device memory! Think of it this way, if you want to swap memory cards (for whatever reason) then all your apps that you have put on the SD card will not function.
Then there's the fact that most SD cards are slower than the internal memory, and that any widgets will not function if moved to SD etc...

Actually not all of the phones carry a lot of memory. The more expensive the phone the more memory you receive. Thanks for your advice, though. I had the same question as the other person.

Using the apps2sd that is 'built in' yu can't move everything to the sd card, each app dev can choose to enable or disable allowing this and for some apps it is not recommended (apps with widgets for example) because if the SD Card is removed the app won't work properly.
Your Aria was probably running a modified version of apps2sd which, if I understand correctly, creates a partition on the SD Card to be used for apps. This works differently than the apps2sd that is native to Android.

Moving Apps to SD Card

It seems that choosing the "move apps to SD card" op tion merely moves apps to the internal SD storage...whiskey tangro foxtrot!
Google promised to fix the 2gb limit and awkward partitioning scheme for Android with ICS...a long, long time ago. What happened?
My issue is twofold-- one, is there a way to modify the phone so that the 2gb max can be increased before I move apps to the external sd card? Also, if there is just one large partition, will apps actually be moved where I want them? To my external SD? There has to be some editable property that chooses which mounted partition is considered the "SD Card".
Im surprised the manufacturers haven't been sued, considering you can't actually use the 16 or 32gb they advertise for-you can only use 1/8th of it for apps. And even when moving them to the SD card, you're still limited, because certain apps can't/shouldn't be moved, and others merely store "some" data on the SD card, and leave the rest where it defaulted to. So you might end up with 2gb of apps on the internal, and 2-4gb on the internal, but I've never actually seen a android device full for this reason. And remember that 2gb? Yea....you'll be notified that there's "insufficient space" even though you have 400-500MBs, and are only trying to install a 500k app.
What's the deal?

Moving apps to SD card

My phone has 16GB of internal storage, so there's definitely enough space to store a lot of apps. The problem is, only 2GB of it is actually allocated for the apps storage. So I thought about moving all of my apps, whichever ones possible, to the larger 14GB partition. My question is will there be any negative impacts on the phone?

Mostly no
Most apps will run fine from wherever you put them, some, like facebook for example, want to be on the main partition so that they can always be accessed, when you move them to the other partition the app thinks you've moved it to an external sd card, which again is why facebook wants to be on the main one, so when ever you take your card out facebook is still running, gathering information, I mean connecting you to your friends.
I suggest downloading an app called APP2SD, or even paying for APP2SD Pro. It will tell you which apps you can move and which you shouldn't. It also alerts you when you install a new app if it can moved to the sd card right away.
Hope that all helps.

Android apps taking up 4gb of internal sd card memory. How can I see which APPS take

the most space?
Also which apps can't I for sure move to sd card? I remember trying this with chrome and it didn't work. Any other apps or rules to keep in mind?
I don't think of Chrome as a system app but I still couldn't move it
A little cumbersome, but just going into the Application Manager in Settings will show you how much the apps take up when you click on them individually. I don't know of a separate app that does this... There are plenty to analyze your internal and external storages but not specific to app storage usage. But Chrome is typically installed from the factory so would be a system app. When you update, it places most of the data in the /data partition, but still considered a system app. Chrome and Facebook are 2 apps that take up a ton of space typically.

How to move apps from Internal Storage to SD Card

I just stumbled upon it and I though it might be useful. In order to move an app from your phone's internal storage to your SD card, you just need to
1) open Settings -> Apps
2) Tap on an app
3) Tap on Storage
4) Tap Change
5) Tap SD card
PS: Obviously apps will take more time to open (the delay is noticable in facebook).

You don't even need to do that. Just long press any app then >app info>storage etc...

Welcome to Android! :silly:
And for anyone tempted to try, the onboard 64 gig is far faster than any SD card you can currently buy. Many apps will run poorly, if at all. Moving apps to the SD card should be an absolute last resort, right after you've figured out which apps you really didn't need in the first place.

I tend to agree, I moved a much of apps to my SD now things run much slower I regret doing so.
Moving apps to SD is soooo kit kat....
Depends on what apps you moved i guess.
Ive notified NO CHANGE on the apps ive moved. WhatsApp is on the SSD card and behaves just as it did on internal.
Let's see.. samsung internet , Firefox, textra, all amazon apps, google drive, instagram, Snapchat, outlook, pandora, OneDrive...
NO DIFFERENCE at all.
Now there was one app, samsung gear 360, it did NOT like to be on storage card (kept force closing even though i was not using it when this was happening) so i moved it back to internal.
Also not ALL of the apps data is moved to the SD card. Some data of the app still lives on the SD.
EDIT: i dont use crackbook aka Facebook, so i cant speak on that, but i use WhatsApp, for example, and it opens up normally. No lag. None of the apps i moved are behaving out of normal. Again this is dependent on other factors, but in my daily use environment i dont notice any lag.
I also dont use the memory and storage optimizer (killing apps in the background from running)...
The internal storage is faster than sd unless you can find one of their new faster sd cards...if you move a lot of apps you may see performance loss...
