Currently on Checkrom XWLA4 2.3.6 with Speedmod kernal.
Last night I performed a Titanium backup and a Nandroid backup in preparation for an upgrade. I had previously performed an EFS backup sometime back. I didn't perform the upgrade, just completed some backups. Anyways over night something seems to have gone wrong with my phone. I wake up to find that it's showing there's no SIM card detected and then when I checked baseband version and IMEI both are showing unknown as well as a bunch of other fields.
I've tried a number of ways to restore the EFS folder. I've tried GSII_Repair, EFS Pro 1.9, kTool, and a couple of manual methods. All of which give the same result.
Some strange things that I noticed, I have an EFS folder inside of an EFS folder. The /efs folder seems to have less files then the /efs/efs folder. Also /efs/efs folder was the fold that had the .nv_data.bak and .nv_data.bak.md5. Not sure if its suppose to be that way.
Wondering what the best way to try to get my phone up and running would be.
Thanks,
Lu.

The problem:
(a) You performed nandroid backup in CWM recovery while your phone was connected to the charger. This is a known bug of almost all versions of CWM recovery.
(b) Baseband missing means that your Modem was wiped off which happened as a result of the bug in (a.)
Further Explanation
a. this has nothing to do with your /efs folder
b. If baseband is missing then the phone can never read your IMEI, hence no network
Possible Solution
a. Download Modem (CWM zip format) of your choice. If you already have a modem then, skip to next step
b. Disconnect your phone from the charger
c. Boot to CWM recovery
d. Flash modem.zip you downloaded
e. Reboot phone
check your phone info after reboot (give your phone about 5 minutes to settle down), your IMEI, network etc should be back now
good luck

it was definitely plugged into my usb port charging at the time. just tried what you recommended and still the same issue. i wouldn't be surprised if everything that i tried today with the efs folder made it worse.
any recommendations? would it help if i tried a fresh install of xwla4 (2.3.6) or something newer like xwlpg (4.0.3)?
really need to get this fixed. any info or step-by-steps are greatly appreciated.
thanks.

You shouldn't have messed with your efs partition after the issue came up. it's suppose to be the last solution and not the first one.
ok.
try this:
-Remove your SIM.
-Reboot to CWM recovery
-Flash modem
-wipe cache partition
-wipe dalvik cache
-reboot phone
-Allow phone to stay for 5 mins.
-check your phone info, check IMEI
if both are back fine, just reinsert your sim and continue normal life.
let me know what happens

please provide answers to the ff questions:
1. Is your baseband showing now?
2. Is your IMEI back?
3. Goto Settings > About, in your phone and post everything you see there.

Not sure what happened or how this happened but while I was retrieving the information from the About Phone screen the baseband was showing unknown and then once I glanced back down to get some more info, it just appeared and within another few seconds I got my IMEI and cellular services started working!
Thank you very much kind sir! Greatly appreciated!

When you have this kind of problem, messing with /efs should always be the last solution and not the first one.

in your own case, where baseband and imei was missing, changing anything in the efs comes last because, if it's other thing related, flashing modem , firmware and things like that should fix the problem.
Then the last thing is messing with /efs partition.
Why, because, efs partition is not touched during flashing of ROM/firmware. It contains sensitive files, and should only be modified as last resort.

I did a back up on sd and pc. Before. I had only flashed from rr 2.6.1 rom to a jb rr rom after a few days of not changing any thing it came up network locked enter code etc. Whilst out driving so nothing I changed iko. Now it still changes imei but I have a stored working backup so I jus restore that and reboot. Would a modem and rom have to be compatible? I've never changed my modem do I need too and is it flashable? thanks
I only have these problems cos standard isn't different..

GII_repair (app), you must backup your efs first,
Or manually repair your efs folder by following the tutorial here: forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1264021

Hello, I own Galaxy S2, after I tried to update firmware to JPKI1 ( Downloaded from samfirmware), the flash went ok but after that, I noticed the Signal is gone, IMEI and I CANT do any reflashing either to stock or custom, I used ODIN to do the flashing procedure, each time I flash a Firmware nothing happens the old (JPKI1) version still there, I'm confused what to do now DIY or Service center?.
Regards.
sounds like you may have nuked your efs folder.
If you ment to write I noticed the Signal is gone and the IMEI
Hopefully you have a backup

Can you flash a new rom & rooted kernel via odin
then look to see what you have in /efs
If you have any backup files under /efs, say /efs/_nvdata.bak you may be in luck (I was)

Well, I tried to flash another kernel and another rom but the weird thing is after finishing the flashing, nothing happens at all, the old version is there, even if i do a data wipe, the data doesn't wipe at all, every thing is still the same, thanks for the reply.
BTW: I haven't found anything in efs folder.

whoa, this was quite a ride.. just for information (if anybody would like to know how to solve this..) - my phone was showing Unknown IMEI and acted like no SIM was inserted (believe me, it was [correctly]). I reflashed kernel - nothing. Restored ROM backup - nothing. Restored efs - again, nothing. Then I noticed "Unknown" in Baseband column too, my life sudenly became brighter and I thought I've found the problem/solution. Flashed modem file - believe me or not, nothing again after few full wipes, resets and flashes via Odin (only PDA file), the last thing I thought might help was downloading full ROM package (since not all ROMs have CSC,ROM and Modem file included) and the only one I've ever tried was XXLPH, so I downloaded it and after flashing this WHOLE package my phone started to work again, all I had to do was restore my CheckROM backup. strange thing about this all is that my EFS folder was untouched from the beginning of the problem (I checked that first), the phone simply started (yes, through normal usage, display was on and I was playing some game) to act like no SIM was inserted and no Modem was flashed. Considering that I'm in this root business for less than two weeks (check my registration date), I'd like to thank god for his/her help you can't even imagine how stressed I was, I don't want to go through this again though no-one here helped me, thank you anyway go in peace, give money to charity and love your family. and hopefully this won't happen to you.

Sometimes they do. A few years ago I lost IMEI after installing CyanogenMod 10.1 on Samsung Galaxy S Advance. After flashing 3-file rom using Odin it came back. So flashing this 4 file rom with Odin won't hurt and it might bring IMEI back

I must have wiped the EFS folder in CWM not realising it's important. If I do a factory reset or wipe "data" in CWM, the phone IEMI code is lost and it only allows emergency calls. Only a restore from the image brings it back to a usable state.
I have a image backup, so I'm sort of ok. So it's running ok, but that means I cannot sell the phone off, as I cannot do a reset without bricking it (and I cannot delete accounts)
Is there anyway of recovering IEMI, NV_DATA.BIN?
I wouldn't be fiddling with this phone if I had enough RAM in the first place. I have tried QPST but I cannot communicate with the phone, it just says not found.
Is there any other way of copying NV_DATA.BIN modded to my IEMI to EFS folder?
Is it a simple fix?

Use galaxy toolbox to restore imei and search the thread how to use it.
will it recover iemi from a nv_data_bin that I don't have?
tried it, still does not work. EFS partition file is about 1MB when backed to micro sd card. Is this right?
does anyone have a backup of theirs and could they edit iemi for mine?
I've been having wifi problems too, it keeps on dropping out with the wifi address. This one of the problems with lost efs/iemi?
getting it looked at by phone shop, I've restored the image, done a factory reset, unrooted it, do I need to do binary counter reset?
IMEI partition is very small, that's right. On russian 4pda.ru some people repaired their IMEI by installing stock rom via odin. (that, wich comes with 4 files.)
I have downloaded the single file and repacked versions.
Which version of Odin should I use? I cannot get odin to communicate with the phone, is there another way of flashing the phone?
phone FIXED! Managed to unzip the repacked files, used odin 1.85, flashed the three files, rebooted, then reset to factory defaults, and can now dial out!

Hi, I've had the same problem, I want to install jelly bean ROM on my galaxy ace s5830i, but tried it before and I only read a forum about backing up efs folder afterwards, so it was too late! Now I have an imei number but the efs folder is empty, so there's no way of installing a ROM like jelly bean without being able to recover the imei number later, EVERY TIME I INSTALL JELLY BEAN IT KNOCKS OUT THE IMEI! Does anyone know how to recover the details in the efs folder if you have accidentally wiped them?

1. You don't install Jelly Bean. You install themed Gingerbread ROM
2. You won't see anything in EFS folder ever. If you can't see anything in it, doesn't mean it's empty.

Hi guys
I was using slimbean 6 with SiyahKernel 1.9.1. I did a fresh wipe and install of slimbean 7. After the install and when booting i still got the siyah logo which I though was strange. After boot im not getting any signal. I then reverted back to my backup of slimbean 6 and I STILL have no signal. It's odd becuase it was working fine before.
I've tied using perseus kernal and that wont boot slimbean.
What can I try to get signal back?
thanks

Check correct modem and CSC .

I still have an efs folder on my phone, but i think it makes one if something goes wrong? Couldn't see a .efs file in there .....
Happened to me before.
I falshed a rom with different phone model.
Installing stock firmware via odin worked and saved my phone.
After having S3 for some months, I decided to update it to 4.3.
So I searched online and saw some tutorials how to root and install costum ROMs.
I read few tutorials to be sure how to do that and after all went good and the ROM installed, One problem has rised: NO SIGNAL!
so I wiped all and installed a ROM STOCK.
After that the signal came back "half way". It's showing signal bars but I can't call to anyone, even after calling to my provider...
I just don't know what to do. Please help

That is your backup flash with odin
( When you flashed a custom rom it probably backed up your efs some roms backup by default)
I would just backup your efs you have at the moment just in case you have problems flashing. You will then be able to return to how your efs is now even though it is not fully working..

The phone has to bee rotted to use ktool?
I also understand from the link you did about the EFS that there are two types of base bands and if I have an efs backup that I did on V1 baseband so I can't restore it on a v2 baseband, so my conclusion is to get back to 4.1.2... correct me if I am wrong

good that you found efs backup
yes you need root. or you use the recovery philz touch to restore your efs (then you don't need root, but a custom recovery).
well samsung roms based on 4.3 need efs v2, so you have to go back to 4.1.2 to restore your efs v1 backup.
if everything is working again, I would suggest you to use oding to upgrade to 4.3, because then everything should be updated correctly (but keep your efs backup, and make another one, just to be sure)
then you can try out again custom roms based on sammy 4.3
So what is the best option to restore it?
Because before I tried (while 4.3 stock rom was installed) the flash it with Odin but Odin always crashed when I was uploading it to Odin.
With kTool I tried before but when I am clicking on the button it says that it restored but he didn't asked for directory, when do I need to put it?
The same story with phliz, I also tried with this and he don't asks for directory, only asking whan the ending if the file-tar to bin...

Just extract the efs.tar and copy its contents to /efs.

Where is this folder located? I can't find it
and does it for xTool and phliz recovery destinations for teaking the recovery from?
Edit:
I found the /efs. I dind't know that I need to use root explorer...
I exchanged the files with my back up and suddenly instead of 0049 IMEI I got 0000 IMEI.
I tired also to flash a modem and also didin't work...

Hmm... try installing another EFSv2 modem, then do the /efs copying part again.
Suddenly after so restarts, the IMEI got back
But... The SN now is 0000000000
You'll need to correct the permissions of the files you've copied. Try searching for someone who already did this and duplicate what they did.

Ok,
I tried something new. I flashed a new modem, backed up a full backup and then installed a costum rom 4.3.
the IMEI GOT BACK! And even the SERIAL NUMBER!
But I think the serial number is not good because he has 16 or 17 (I don't remember) digits (numbers and letters).
But still i have signal bars but can't make or receive calls he says: "No registered on network"
For the finalle, I tried ARIZA patch but he Is stuck on 0%...
here I stopped, I really don't know what to do.
Don't use the Ariza patch once you've got your IMEI and SN back. Maybe try flashing a new stock version of Android with a EFSv2 baseband so as to not go through the copying fiasco.
