How to recover IMEI from generic? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys.
Here`s my problem.
My brother bought an international variant of the Galasy S3, i93000 a couple of days ago from an online auction website. To make the story short, after trying to figure out why the device isn`t connecting to ny carrier, I found that it had a generic IMEI. Go figure, got the same problem earlier this year with an SII.
The previous owner flashed it a few times, as it came with a variant of Jelly Bean, XXDLH8 I believe.
Flashed a stock open europe ICS (XXBLG8) and rooted it but still have the generic IMEI.
I found some threads online on how to rewrite your IMEI code back, since it is written on the back of the phone and on the box, but it only applies to the Verizon version of the S3. I need to access *#7284# and select something that isn`t there on my device. And using a piece of software called NV reader/writer, you edit your IMEI directyly on your phone. It has to be put in the correct form, but it is possible.
My question is, how can we edit our IMEI code on the international version of the SIII ? Don`t get me wrong, I don`t want to modify it all the time, just trying to get it back to how it was.
Sending back to waranty isn`t an option as the previous owner bought it from another country, and also he now refuses to answer my calls.
I`ll have to mention that the device isn`t stolen, it has the Samsung generic IMEI, which wouldn`t be a problem ig it wasn`t blocked by my carrier.
I know have a really expensive device that isn`t more than an iPod. My brither doesn`t even want to see it anymore.
It has to be a way we can restore our IMEI via nv_data.bin and a HEX editor.

You can not be sure that this phone wasn't stolen. Previous user could wipe or modify efs partition to not be tracked by IMEI. Or he just broke efs while flasing and sold the phone because he couldn't fix it.
The warranty is valid throughout the whole European Union, not only in country where the phone was purchased. But you did not write where the phone was purchased nor where you live.
You can serch your internal sd card, maybe there is a backup of efs folder. If not, you can try to use some tools to restore correct IMEI to nv_data.bin from .nv_data.bak (EFS Pro or similar).
You could also try this manual solution:

i9.0.1.3k galaxy imperator

Hi there.
Yes, I can be sure that the phone isn`t stolen as it has all the necessary paperwork to prove it.
Regarding your suggested fixes, I`ve already tried the first one, restoring from the .bak files with no success.
Also I read the second one earlier and I can`r apply it as my nv_data.bin file doesn`t have even have the lines mentioned in the tutorial. It says that I have to edit line 0188008, but my files goes from 0188001 straight to 0188014.
I`ve found a tutorial over at http://forum.gsmhosting.com/vbb/f606/tutorial-galaxy-s3-backup-restore-imei-without-root-1513909/ (sorry for the external link if they aren`t permitted) but it applies to the Verizon version (I believe) with the Qualcomm cpu. When I dial *#7284# on my device I only have the 2 sections with 2 options each. UART where I can select Modem or PDA, and USB with the same two option. Because of this, the app NV reader/writer can`t access my device.

Need a NV file for LG KS20 (euro) / IMEI and BT address problem

Hi guys,
i need a stupid nv file for my ks20. yesterday i tried to create a nv backup but the LGMDP_EURO didn't recognize the model of my phone. after than i tried the emergency mode and i clicked the wrong button: it flashed my phone with a brandmarked firmware from vodafone germany.
i found in this board the original unbranded firmware and flashed it on my phone, but i couldn't use it due the "unavailable otp block".
i also read that you have to erase the efs if you have this problem and so i did it.
i lost my imei number, maybe the bt- and wlan-address, too.
do you know a solution for this dilemma?
lol, no one who can help me and the bunch of people with the same problem?
except for the IMEI the other nv options should be the same at every ks20. and this IMEI entry could be replaced with the QPST tools by an invalid one.
why do i find so many crap about "how to ****flash ur bricklocked simphone" but no informations about reconstruction? that's cheap.
but yes: i'm the noob who erased the efs because some bigger noob meant to suggest me to do that...
so plz pm me at least!
+1
Who can help us???
SOS SOS
To everyone,
If u need .nv2 file, pm me with ur imei no. and email address, i can generate one for you, but the last digit, which is calculated by your phone, would likely to be different and also i can only generate branded .nv2 since i only got branded .nv2 file. It could be work in unbranded phone but just u need to flash a branded rom or hybrid rom to use with it.
The last digit of IMEI is a checksum, so if the 14 first digit will be correct, then the last one will be correct as well.

[Q] Help with S3 IMEI 0049 after SDS fix and NV method is not working

Hi guys I’m having problems with fixing my phone, here comes the descriptions of the problem:
I had SDSyndrom on my S3 on April, I live in Brazil and I’ve bought my phone in Paraguay, however, this phone was made in UK….
So I’ve took my phone to Samsung Brazil and they told me they couldn’t fix it because it wasn’t a Brazilian phone. After that I found a charlatan that told me he could fix the phone. After 1 month trolling me, I’ve decided to pick my phone back and send it to ANOVO in UK by mail to fix it.
I’ve got it back recently and the phone is turning back on again, however, I first experience one minor problem, the Factory mode (like this one: http://i.imgur.com/kdbwtX8.jpg) and after a long time in the phone with UK they told me they hadn’t modify anything except flush new hardware.
After long internet research I was able to fix the Factory mode by a terminal code.
However, I’ve put my SIM card in the phone, I’ve got antenna signal but it wouldn’t call or receive calls… after a long time researching again, I’ve figured out that my IMEI was changed to 0049… (probably was that f*king asshole here in Brazil that told me he could fix it and he couldn’t!).
What I’ve done so far:
Flashing new firmware with Odin won’t work,
I’ve tried to access *#7284# but the Qualcomm USB settings is missing with the all android versions I've tried (4.0.4v; 4.1.1v; 4.1.2v; and 4.2.2 leaked v) so I’ve typed su -c 'am start -n com.sec.android.app.phoneutil/com.sec.android.app.phoneutil.USBSettings' in the terminal to access it
When I’ve select 'RNDIS + DM + MODEM' my pc tells me it couldn’t recognize the device and ‘RMNET + DM + MODEM’ won’t find any port in NV-ITEMS Reader/Writer (http://prntscr.com/1gw4ts) . The only option that the Reader/Writer will find a port is with the ‘MTP+ADB’… witch will not work.
I can’t find the *ss h*le that did this to my phone and other places won’t change IMEI because they say it is illegal to change IMEI, But I’ve just want to put my IMEI back to normal no change it… Is there a method to put back the IMEI that it is written on the back of my phone, without using a Z3X Samsung box? (can’t seem to find them here… and in Brazil this definitely would be way expensive… probably it would be cheaper to buy a new S3)… ANOVO in UK told me I could send it back by mail again, at my costs… but that would cost me again about 150 US dollars…
Sorry for extending myself, but I've couldn't be more direct...
I ain't a advance user for this matters, but I'm trying to do my best...
Thankz
Rodrigo
You cannot flush or flash new hardware its impossible .
Is the phone a I9300???
Looks as next step is a service centre if you have no backed up EFS folder.

Sorry my bad English is not flash it was swapped (I think the mother board)
It is a I9300 phone
And I do not have any backup because I’ve just got it back and it was like this…
I’m trying to contact that guy that dealt with my phone in the beginning but he won’t answer his phone… the place he work is closed and there is a new store in there…
I’m pretty sure that if I take my phone to a Samsung repair center here in Brazil they will tell me what they told me before with the SDS: “the phone is foreign and we cannot do anything to assist you…”

(sorry I'm using Microsoft word to correct my english and I mistakenly copy all)
there is nothing you can do. you need a motherboard with an imei, which this one apparently isn't. you've been scammed
I cannot be scammed because ANOVO is one of the two authorized service centers in UK...
I don't know what they changed because they don't tell, but every post you look about SDS they say that the motherboard are exchanged in this process
motherboard is changed, yes, but the efs is there. your motherboard doesn't have an efs and there's nothing you can do about it but take it back. it's not going to be a problem if those guys are as good as you make them out to be, right?
Thats not the problem... not sure if u readed the whole post. The problem is that I live in Brazil, I've got to send it all to way to UK because it is as UK phone and Brazilian Samsung won't fix forign phones.
Besides costing almos 150 US dolares to send it to UK and getting it back, it took almos 2 months to all this process!

Fact is you have the generic IMEI and no backup of EFS .
You may not have been scammed but something is not right with your phone .
Anova flashed new firmware and fixed phone . Flashing firmware can delete the EFS folder and render the generic one .Easy to fix with a backed up EFS folder .
Your report does not say they fitted a new motherboard .
Whatever you now need a new motherboard .
There are a number of Samsung repair centers in the UK the one you used is not one i would take my phone to .

You didn't read my reply. I said that there's nothing you can do but replace the motherboard

that won't work. but if you know anyone who has a z3x box or a smart sam box you can write your old imei to the new pcm. i had the same problem after changing the board. but take care write down the serial nimber of your board bevore writing the imei number, maybe you will need it if somthing goes wrong.
Same problem

Rodrigo, I'm also brazilian and I'm facing exactly the same problem that you were facing some months ago. I'd like to know if you already have a solution for this problem or not?

[Q] Official network unlock not working i9300

Hi everyone,
I come to you as I am a noob as far as twinkering with my gt i9300 goes and I think I messed it up big time.
Here is what I did :
I had android 4.2.1 on my gt i9300, the stock rom from sfr (french career).
I network unlocked it using my career official unlock code, which worked great. It recognized my japanese career sim very well (i am in japan now).
Then I got greedy and wanted to update my android version so I downloaded a 4.4 android rom from I don't remember well, and a cwm manager.
The network unlock worked fine at first but after a restart it did not work anymore. It asked me for a network unlock pin.
I thought it was asking for a sim pin at first, which my sim did not have as I hadn't set one. I got mad trying sim pin code and gave up. Had I given it the network unlock code instead of possible sim pin code it might have worked but I will never know.
Then I tried to solve the problem installing android 5.1 cyanogen version but I had the same problem except this time I understood it was asking for the network unlock code. The problem is that when I fed it to him, it did not work, the request was unsuccessful.
So I looked for a solution on internet and found all kind of things:
I read about restoring the efs partition, but i do not have any back up.
I read about installing a stock rom version, change the csc and retry the official network unlock code, but it does not work, whether I restore through Kies (which gives me a vodafone version) or manually (with an sfr version, french vodafone it seems).
I read about installing Galaxy simunlock app after rooting the phone and installing userbox, but it tells me that my locking system is not handled as it is too new.
I upgraded, downgraded, rooted in every possible way but nothing works.
I am running out of solution and I therefore turn to you for help, hoping you will be more creative than me.
I have the official network unlock code, the phone, no back up of any kind and really little hope.
Thank you in advance for any help you could give me !
Have a nice day !
Sadly you didn't make a backup of efs. That should be first thing before playing with customs.
Oh well, I suppose your efs may be screwed up due to entering couple times bad network unlock key.
I suggest go to next corner GSM shop and pay 2400JPY for efs fixing and perm sim unlock. But before that, check your IMEI and serial number are correct. Thay can fix all of this in one step.
You need to do this via box, you can't reprogram that or fix yourself because you did everything that may help and you still have a problem. You can't use any software on efs v2. It will not work.

Thank you for your quick answer !
I will follow your advice and go to a "professional".
However I don't understand how they are able to do what I can't, do they have special softwares or anything ?
I would like to know because I do have the official unlock code.
Also, I would still like to upgrade to android 5.1 cyanogen version, do you think it will be possible after such a modification ?
I should not encounter any risk if I backup the efs beforehand right ?
Thank you again
Service will connect your phone to, so called, box, ie Z3X Box. This is some kind of pc-phone bridge hardware which can alow to decrypt and encrypt efs files, fix IMEI, serial number, flash firmware, IMEI certificate, remove network locks, sim locks etc.
Of course you can backup your efs now but it is corrupted and useful. Backup this partition after repair. Than you will be able to flash anything you want. Even CM12.1,no problem.

Ok I understand better now.
Thank you very much for your answers, they have been really helpful !
Do not let them plug your phone to the box if you want to install 4.4 or 5.0 because if you give them they will replace your imei number with a clon imei number and you will stuck with max 4.3 and you need to install a patched modem and kernel every time you format your phone... tell them to try to fix without replacing your imei number first. Replacing the imei number should be the last thing to do...
Why do you think they will clone his phone's IMEI? It's even illegal.
If someone doesn't know how to use box than he should not work in GSM service.
You can rewrite original IMEI and serial number without cloning anything.
An probably IMEI is fine, it's network lock problem.

Most repair shops dont care its legal or not. Also most costumers dont know this kind of things and as long as phone is working its okay for them. Mine is just a warning to make him look like he knows this things so repairman doesnt do something with no going back...

need help to restore my IMEI

hi Guys,
First, I apologize for that I'm doing the hundredth post on this topic
and secondly, I apologized for my "google translator english" (unfortunately I can not so good English because I am from Germany)
to my problem
I had the "Cyanogenmod 11 nightly" ROM on my Samsung Galaxy S 3. By the time the system was slow and I have flashed the latest CyanogenMod Rome via Odin on my phone. After the reboot, I had no connection to the mobile network, my serial number consisted entirely of zeros and my IMEI was not like it is in the battery compartment.
I have now spent several days trying to find a solution but for all IMEI Restore tutorials have not brought with me. Unfortunately, I did not know much about even before the Android system per se and the EFS folder and have therefore no backup.
I tried the IMEI
restore the NV_data.bin + NV_data.bin.md5 methodResult: IMEI was still so wrong seem right that my IMEI is no longer located in the System
restore with the downgrade to a German MG6 Android versionResult: IMEI was still not rightrestore using tools like QPST + nv ReaderWriter or EFS ProfessionalResult: EFS Professional -> Qualcomm NV Tools (after efsprofesional the mobile phone has put into the correct USB mode) -> connect to my phone broke off as soon as I wanted to read or write
QPST + nv ReaderWriter -> gave me appear not correct port on my phone
all the drivers I have installed clean and tidy. After further investigation, I found out that I need a special UARTcable this (and maybe a Z3X Box or something similar?)
My question is
How can I get now establish a new nv_data.bin file that includes my right IMEI
or whether (if it is really expensive) someone is so net and created me such a file
my Hardware is Samung Galaxy s 3 (i9300) (unbranded) (may u need this too: i bought it in germany)
I only want my own IMEI and I do not think out a like or I like to personally via PN or so to sample photos (for example, a predetermined word from the person) and the battery compartment of the phone with the IMEI
for I illigalität knows that it is illegal but not his own restore its IMEI change, because you paid a lot of money for his mobile phone and the IMEI is jointly contain. Who's afraid these publicly to write here because this information could be misused can I enjoy writing via private message. I would be very happy
Now im trying again to solve my problem with this Tutorial -> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XT42ri37RBU
my preperations:
im installing now a fresh windows 7 on my Laptop
i flashed I9300XXUGNG3_I9300DBTGNG2_I9300XXUGNA8_HOME.tar.md5 (SGS3 Stock Firmware DBT with android 4.3) downloaded with the SamFirm tool from http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-tab-s/general/tool-samfirm-samsung-firmware-t2988647
i rooted my phone with Odin3 and CF-Auto-Root-m0-m0xx-gti9300.tar.md5
i put the usb debugging on (settings > options > about device > [clicked 7 times on Buildnumber] that activates the developer menu and i put usb debugging on in settings > options > developer options > usb debugging)
i´ll post the results
dont work for me becouse "ONLY for US variants. It DOES work on Qualcomm CPU and DOESN'T work on Galaxy International Version with Exinos CPU!"
someone maybe got antoher way to fix it?
@sLeCks:
1. Flash last firmware with Odin (again), go to recovery immediatly and do factory reset.
2. If 1. doesn't help, try Ariza patch.
3. If 2. doesn't help, let it repair by Samsung-service (cheap).
Firmware Update dont restored IMEI (got still 0049 imei)#
Ariza patch wont help it just restore the baseband (like written in the Thread "wont help if u goot a 0049 imei)
maybe it works if someone got a i9300 (intl) (exynos NOT Qualcomm) and a z3x-box or another. i send him my right imei-number he backup his efs folder and create the right nv_data.bin file for me. then he send it to me via email or he put it on uploadet in ecample. i download it in put it on my phone and restore my imei.
maybe i think is a full efs.img backup file better xD. if this way work it would be the best i think.
Ißve called some mobile reperature stations an mony of then dont do an imei-restore. i got one and go now to him maybe he can help. but if someone got a box and a old sgs3 i would be sooooooo happy if he could help me.

G925F fake imei, no prior backup.

I've bought it like this and i thought it can be repaired, i had a similar problem with my i9500 a while back and i fixed it by flashing some modem on the right firmware, i don't even know what i had done but it took me 3 full days of trying, truly frustrating. I haven't got the phone's imei as it came without a box or accessories hope you can help me out !
Here is what i've tried so far :
- Flashing 3 different 6.0.1 stock firmwares, none of them worked and after every single flash i would encounter device root key error, i have no idea why but it's easily solvable by flashing some kernel as i've seen on some ytb tutorial.
- Backuped the efs folder from phone root on PC then deleting it from the phone root, restart the phone and proceed with replacing the nv_data.bin and the other similar-named file with the ones i backuped then changing permissions to 1001. <--- This i've seen on some forum, i thought it might help, but it didn't change anything!
I really hope you can help me out, i'm bored of searching the web for answers, most of solution i've found are related to some z3x box or octopus and i believe these cost a lot of money and there is no service in my city that can repair phone's imei
Heloo
Hi i had same problem 920f after flash a wrong rom the only fix is octopus box ...they must rewrite imei it cost me 30 euros!
As i said, there is no such service in my city (I live in Braila, since you're romanian too ), but i'm pretty sure it can be solved without special equipment. I think the owner flashed the 6.0 using odin and spooked when saw fake imei then rushed to sell it. It happened the same to me 2 years ago with a i9500 but i eventually solved it without prior backup.
