OK--people are talking all around this issue, and I am looking for a blunt answer. Hopefully this thread can be found easily via Google.
FACT: The GPS fix for stock Galaxy phones we all know about doesn't work for many people.
FACT: Some custom Vibrant ROMs, like Bionix, claim to have fixed the GPS issues.
QUESTION 1: Is the GPS fix in these custom ROMs the same as the one released by Samsung for the Captivate?
QUESTION 2: If not, can anyone verify the performance of the custom ROM fixes? I have seen threads on this site that suggest the GPS is even worse after using a custom ROM (including Bionix).
I am the minority it seems, but my gps is much worse after flashing Bionix 1.8 and 1.9.1. When I was stock JFD I actually created a thread complimenting my GPS.... and now it's useless. No matter how long I stay outside I can not get a lock.
I am not certain what the issue is, because some on the same ROM claim it is great. Not sure how I lost out.... and not blaming sombionix, his rom is so good I still use it even with this issue (and I consider it a big one).
I do not know enough about what he did, but I don't think much was altered from JI6.
Thanks s15274n!
I am going to do some testing...I have access to a stock Vibrant (with no GPS fix), and a stock Captivate (with recent GPS fix). I will do a "map my run" route with each (using my Nexus One and maybe even my G1 as an experiment control), then root the Vibrant with Bionix Fusion, and post my results--probably here and in a blog post. That will give me 5 separate results to compare.
The screenshots and data output should settle all the BS flying around, although I am sure that some people will claim that their particular phone has no problems whatsoever.

Just to add my two cents, I've continued to experience horrible GPS performance despite the fix in JI6. Quite simply, it's unusable if I don't open G-Maps before I drive away from my wirless SSID.
Unfortunately, questions posted here are routinely met with "reflash" and "why can't people search? these issues have been solved a million times!". Most people seem content to assume that since it was fixed on their phone, we're too stupid to figure out how to apply this particular "fix".
This is my fifth phone. My G1, MyTouch, and Nexus One all had GPS' which worked simply and reliably. My Galaxy S phones...not so much. It's gotten to the point where I'm seriously considering paying HTC to fix the busted AMOLED screen on my Nexus One so I can go back to that and sell my Vibrant and i9000 on craigslist.
Sorry for the rant. I only meant to chime in to say "you're not the only one". I'm just frustrated.
I'll be interested to see your results if you go through with your test.
First, to all that have created and contributed to this site, Thank you.
Now I know I'm new here and I'm probably going to get murdered for posting this but I'm completely out of ideas. I've tried searching everywhere and I can't find any answers. I tried flashing the Axura 2.1 and 2.2 roms and my GPS stopped working completley. I've tried using several different modems with the roms. I tried flashing the macnut roms and had the same result.
I've tried searching but there are so many gps problem thread that I can't find the answer(unless I'm skipping over it). So now I'm hoping that somebody will be able to help me out.
Sorry for my ignorance but I really am desperate cause I really wanna get this $500 phone working like one
this needs to be in Q&A, but; ODIN to JFD/JI6, then run the GPSRestore app from the market. If your phone's GPS still doesnt work, then it's the GPS hardware.
I've run GPS on all TW roms, and each one locks quick and accurate.
JL5 and JL5 GPS are spot on.

I don't think you're going to get murdered for posting a question. It just needs to be in the right forum. Next time please post questions in the Q&A forum to keep the Dev forum clutter free.
As far as your problem goes, when you say not working is your gps seeing satellites and just not locking or not seeing any at all.
Is your roof made of solid tinfoil???
Just kidding, but seriously, Odin back to JFD or some other 2.1 firmware and download GPS restore or something like that from the market and go stand OUTSIDE and test it.
If this fails, then you have faulty hardware. Send it to Samsung.

exactly. or your house or where ever you are is getting bad GPS signal. my gps worked flawlessly for a while now. it's just with newer modems, they lock faster.
I had similar issues to what you describe. My GPS would not work with any ROM combination. Sometimes I could see satellites but I would never get a lock. Tried anything with no luck. Finally- I did three things, and I can't tell you for certain which fixed it- but at the end it was fine.
First thing was I followed the hardware fix guide at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=878970 and then I installed a JL4 ROM (I hear JL5 works great too), left settings as stock and made sure Server FQDN Type was set to Auto config instead of www.spirent-lcs.com. Then I went outside and waited like 10 minutes in LbsTestMode "Get Position Test". Now my GPS works!
I haven't had a real problem with the GPS ever since JI2, and the GPS performance in the Froyo-based ROMs is even better. If it's not working for you at all, then you need to exchange your phone for a new one. You should be able to arrange that with T-Mobile at not extra cost to you.
If you bought your phone through T-Mobile you need to contact them. Jump through their hoops and get a replacement ordered.
Sorry for not putting this in the right forums. If a mod has to move it....
This is exactly whats happening. Whether I'm outside or not, the little gps icon blinks but it says my location is temporarily unavailable. I don't think its hardware cause this is a brand new phone that was working yesterday before I installed the ROM. Thanks for the suggestions. Some more are welcomed
no rom or modem fixed my gps completely till i was on eugene's ginger clone r2 and flashed the JL5 Modem WITHOUT doing the Samsung GPS restore from the market. In fifteen seconds i was locked with less than 10m.

This is a brand new phone. Its my 3rd one in lest than a week. This GPS was working to some extent right before I installed the Axura rom. I just did a the GPS restore and now it still won't lock onto my position but it will do the navigation(poorly just like before) to a spoken destination with voice guidance. If I ask it for a map of something it will bring those destinations up also. I'm at a complete loss but I do like this ROM better than Eclair.
samsung restore isn't in the market anymore.
Can someone upload the .apk please ?
Thanks

I'm very tempted to try out an ICS ROM and wonder which I should try. Some swear by Onecosmic's ROM saying it's smoother and more stable than Passion. It's 911 and e911 seem to both work but GPS seems to be broken. Passion seems to be getting the most traffic. e911 is broken though 911 works. GPS is way better than Onecosmic, if I understand correctly, but kernel dependent.
Which are you using and why? Or should I wait for more issues to be fixed, e.g. mute/unmute?
I ran Onecosmic's for a while. 2.11 was pretty good. They then produced a 3.1, but didn't bother to change the build.props values from i9000, guaranteeing problems and showing a lack of seriousness in supporting the Vibrant, so I tried the CM9 kang. Build 14 was good, but 15 was terrible (looked like build.props was incorrect), decided to stay with CM7 until an ics rom has CM permissions management. No experience with Passion.
I agree a lot with what cashmundy said. Neither onecosmic nor the cm9 teamhacksung have vibrants and are builing for the I9000 so we are just getting I9000 ports with no true support from the rom dvelopers. Not that either is a bad rom but the Vibrant community is the ugly step kid in the development. Neobuddy and Nelson are building ICS Passion on their Vibrants and supporting it well. Passion is based on cm9 as far as I can tell with Neobuddy working it for the Vibrant. Nelson is constantly trying to improve the kernel and latest is based on rev 3.1.10. Passion has it's bugs and each new version fixes some and regresses on others but it's a Vibrant rom worked on by Vibrant devs and is the most complete IMHO.
I honestly havent tried OC's rom. Been really happy with Neo's Passion. It seems everyone has a different quirk. Some people's GPS works, some don't, some have the mute/unmute bug, some don't. My GPS works AND don't have the mute/unmute bug. One of the lucky few it seems.
ICS Passion v12
I like it a lot after CM dropped further development. It seems to move around faster and is clean. The mute/umute doesn't seem to be an issue for me. Haven't tried GPS except to play with Angry GPS. Seems like I was picking up satlellites, best I could tell. I read something about a unlocked Samsung phone from China not working on 911, but did on 112 (international emergency). I'm beginning to wonder that if Samsung won't share the codes...DOES 911 work on the stock ROMS??? I'm thinking I can live without 911, since my option of returning to the Eclair ROM makes me ill... .
Seems like 911 is broken passion v11 onwards
ICS passion it should be, as cashmundy said, its dedicated to Vibrant. I have working GPS but the Mute/Unmute issues bugs me. I am still on v11 btw.
Both roms are good, I think that passion has more tweaks. Both are stable less mute and unmute bug which is keeping me on trigger 822. But other than that everything else works great. Just irritating that a phone does not do the simplest feature of answering a call correctly.

how can I put the firmware in order to avoid a bug with the microphone?
In general, there is such of the ICS?
There is a new Onecosmic version out, 4.1. I'm pulling it down to see if the build.props still say i9000 instead of t959.
One important philosophical difference is that Onecosmic is explicitly AOSP and only AOSP, whereas Passion is using some or all of CM9. That's reason enough to choose Passion for me. I'm just waiting for permissions management to get ported.
PS: download of Onecosmic version 4.1 finished, took a look inside with Ghost Commander (must-have tool) and the build.props is correct for T959.
Give me the link.

I know there's plenty of GPS problems with this phone, but after reading that GPS works in both the roms i've tried, i think im doing something wrong. This is where i'm at:
After using both of these roms on 2 different vibrants, i can't figure out for the life of me why i cant get the GPS to do anything at all on these roms.
I've used ODIN to go back to stock, and then tried flashing the roms but with no luck.
I dont have any clue how to use Angry GPS either, so i haven't messed with that at all. If i need to change some settings within the app, please enlighten me.
Thanks for anyone who helps me with this problem. The only Rom i know of that i have 100% working GPS is with Team Whiskey's Bionix-V 1.3.1.
Anyone? I dont want to be pushy, i just wanna figure out the problem.
And on a side note, i know i posted in the wrong section.
GPS works but it is also a work in progress as no one knows what is really going on with GPS in the Vibrant. The ROM seems to have little effect on weather the GPS works but the "kernel" that underlies it is where the effort is being placed for a fix. While the GPS works on all the kernels it eventually stops working after some time. It is believed to be an issue with how Android starts and stops different services to save power.
Most users have reported great GPS using Kiss 2.2 kernel in combination with either of the Team-Passion Roms (Passion, Euphoria). The most recent kernel is Kiss 8.2. Get it here:http://team-passion.com/index.php/downloads/galaxy-vibrant
For info on each kernel see here: http://team-passion.com/index.php/forum/2-about-team-passion/283-test-kernels
Keep in mind that the developers in my opinion have been working on these ROMS and Kernels like it was their full time job. And they are determined to make GPS work consistently so give them some encouragement to hopefully keep them motivated as they are likely our only hope.
Passion is a faster more responsive but Euphoria has more customizations baked in. The kernels are interchangeable between these ROMs but they have different performance characteristics.
GPS working after deep sleep on Euphoria
After going through 10 ROMs and 20 Kernals I think I may have a semi working GPS. Running Euphoria RC2.1 with stock KB5 modem and gingerbread bootloaders. Installed these gps fixes
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1550327
Ran ultimate cleaning script then flashed Glitch then the subzero kernel in the same recovery session
CM9-vibrantmtd-Glitch-V14-B6.zip
cwm-subZero-vibrant-1.1VC_build61-CFS_BLN.zip
Lock immediately after boot with angry gps and phone has deep slept multiple times and gps picks up after granted after 50 seconds
I really appreciate the help guys, the Kiss 8.2 kernel fixed the problem in the Euphoria 2.1 ROM. I get locks within 10 seconds, and also better battery life.
So now as far as im concerned, this is the best combo there is.

8.2 did the trick for me. Locked up in under 20 seconds, and I'm inside my house (by a window) Don't know about deep sleep recovery, but I'll let you know.
You really need to change to Chimera v2.2
I searched through some threads and I couldn’t find a definitive answer on this that was recent.
I am currently running ICS Euphoria on my phone, but I recently started having issues with my phone missing calls intermittently. What happens is I will get a voicemail from a call that never came to my phone (no ring, no missed call). Since it has been awhile since ICS was released, I figured this would be a good time to upgrade to JB.
I’m looking for a slim, fast, and functional version. Don’t care about customization, just need a good daily driver. Specifically I’m looking for a ROM with decent GPS (as good as it can be on the vibrant anyway).
What do you guys recommend?
Slim bean, I know the final jb41 build had solid gps, not sure about jb42 beta builds. CM10 stable also hassolid gps.

Slim Bean seems to come highly recommended, but when I looked at it originally the big complaint was no GPS, maybe that has changed?
I have stayed away from CM roms since they seem to be more on the bloated side of things, but offer lots of customization. Really what I'm interested in is a fairly vanilla experience that runs fast and doesn't eat battery like crazy.
There are some flashable files that will help gps, yagf2, experia gps files and gps wrapper. IMO, slim is your best bet.
What you don't know could fill a book.
You can look at the thread I started here with the same Q and my experience: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2040685
Bottom line (for me so far) is that NONE will have a working GPS,
and if you do get a gps it will eat your battery with all the Kernel Wakelocks caused by the gps.
Again, this is MY experience, I know others have better exp, would appereciate if you could update what you found...
BTW, on Bionix (Froyo) my GPS worked OK, so I don't think it is my device, but who knows...
Interesting points guys. I have had a few different roms on this phone, and the best gps so far has been ICS euphoria.
I think I'll give slimbean a try. I still need to do the little hardware mod for the GPS as well. Hopefully this will net me somewhat reliable GPS.
I have a copy of PA 2.54-360 with ICS GPS files that jrongi1 sent me. If you would like it you can PM me.
The GPS worked great for me!
And I still got love for the streets..
Gps is tricky with our phones. Each is different it seems. I have an orriginal T959 so I did the harware fix. The hardware fix combined with my use of angrygps.apk. I use "supl.sonyericsson.com" port 7275 in both gps.conf and angrygps.
I dont have DS issues with 4.1 or 4.2 roms. never had.
I installed cm10 and kept the gps.conf that came with it, it looks working OK, not the best signal but that might be phone fault.
Its IMPORTANT to use port 7275 in the supl server and not 7276 as some other posts suggests, the 7276 port was the reason for the kernel wake locks and GPS drain...

RemICS-JB v1.0(Team Remics) has good GPS. Doesn't lock as fast at first. Then after few seconds it kick ass. Great rom may I say.
