Hi!
I've finally managed to root and update my Xperia S. Now it's time to remove some bloatware, but I have no idea what is save to remove. When I had the Xperia Arc I had found a list of bloatware but I don't find one for the Xperia S.
Somebody has one or can make one?
Or are these safe to remove:

Firstly, SEARCH the forums and READ. I spent about 10 minutes and was able to find a lot of information about the question you are asking. The other thing is, if you don't know what something is or what it does, and more importantly, how to fix it when it breaks the rest of your phone DO NOT TOUCH!!
A lot of what you have listed isnt what I would consider all bloatware. Its Android system apps as well as definite bloatware. If you are after a completely stock experience devoid of bloat consider flashing CM9 (ICS) or CM10 (JB - experiemental at this stage though) as it will be safer than removing apps you don't know anything about :good:
Also, don't just delete any apps - use an app like Titanium or Rom Toolbox Pro to freeze apps - that way you can restore them if you need to do a factory data reset and start again since you are still on stock. If you just plan on flashing already modified ROM's make a nandroid backup of the stock rom and flash away.
My personal method for stopping any apps from running I don't need is with Root Explorer and I add .bak after the file or apk - that way its still there should I want to do a full factory reset without drama's and it prevents the app from unfreezing or causing problems by just removing it.
Before you do ANYTHING however, make a full nandroid backup of your system!
AntHalService - ANT+ service - heart rate monitors etc. Do not remove if you use such apps and addons.
AntStateNotifier - ANT+ service - heart rate monitors etc. Do not remove if you use such apps and addons.
ApplicationsProvider - Applications Service Provider (ASP) personally I would leave it
ChromeBookmarksSyncAdapter - Bookmarks Sync - only remove if you don't sync your bookmarks with Google.
Facelock - Security app - safer to leave installed.
FbCalendarSync - Xperia Facebook Integration - Only remove if you don't sync Calendar app with Facebook
FBIAppShare - Xperia Facebook Integration
FBMediaDiscovery - Xperia Facebook integration
FBMusicLike - Xperia Facebook Intergration
GoogleCalendarSyncAdapter - Calendar sync - Only remove if you don't sync Calender to Google server
GoogleContactsSyncAdapter - Contacts sync - Only remove if you don't sync Contacts to Google server
GoogleLyricsPlugin - Walkman plug in
GooglePartnerSetup - Unknown, safer to leave installed.
HTMLViewer - Unknown, safer to leave installed. (Depends on where you look as some say safe, others unsafe...your call)
Keychain - security app, from my understanding provideds method for managing certificates etc. Safer to leave installed.
LearningClient - Learns user typed words from keyboard, only remove if you don't use that function.
MediaProvider - Media storage, ringtones, music, notifications. Do Not Remove.
MediaUploader - Media uploads, but will cause errors with media playback (won't work) if disabled/removed. Do Not Remove.
NoiseField - Live Wallpaper
OMAClientProvisioning - OTA Network settings download. Safer to leave installed.
OMADownload - OTA Network settings download. Safer to leave installed.
OmaV1AgentDownloadServices - OTA Network Settings download. Safer to leave installed.
OneTimeInitializer - Unsure, but has something to do with Play Store. Safer to leave installed.
PhaseBeam - Live Wallpaper
PicoTts - SVOX Text to Speech - Only remove if you don't use navigation, translators etc.
PowerSaveModule - Unknown - Personally I have stopped it with no issues.
ReadyToRun - Unsure - Google/XDA Search reveals that its tied in with surface flinger and/or SMS message retention, either way safer to leave.
RemoteControlService - Decide for yourself: http://developer.sonymobile.com/2012/02/29/new-remote-control-service-on-xperia-smartphones-video/
SecureClockJava - web clock service needed by DRM
SemcClock - Clock and Alarm - Only remove if you want to use a third party clock and alarm app.
SemcCnapProvider - Required by System Do Not Remove - again, quick Google/XDA Search reveals this is tied in with baseband, dialing features.
SemcContactsProvider - Contacts Storage - Unsure, personally I would leave it, unless you use a third party app.
SemcDlna - Media Server
SemcDlnaHandover - Media Server
SemcMusic - Walkman
SemcPws - Unsure - Safer to leave
SemcSetupWizard - The initial startup screen when you first boot into your phone when its new or factory reset.
SemcTvLauncher - Connecting to TV
SemcVideo - Video Player
SettingsProvider - Stores your settings - Do Not Remove
Stk - Sim Tool Kit
Storefront - thirdparty apps installer, I have removed this without issue.
Tag - Used by NFC
Talk - Google Talk
TalkBack - Talkback - Accesibility Options - Personally I remove it.
More reading here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1089470 and http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1546253 and of course http://developer.android.com/reference/packages.html
Here is my list of apps I have succesfully 'frozen' without issue on my device. I sit happily with around 280-320mb of free ram (but in Android thats not such a big deal anyway as any unsued ram is just not doing anything.) I also have disabled fast-dormancy as my provider doesnt support it properly yet and having it on the device can cause battery drain problems. I don't use Timescape at all so its all removed. I also disable the following as well for fast-dormancy:
Code:
/system/etc/fast-dormancy
fd_custm_conf.txt
fd_ext_conf.txt
fd_int_conf.txt
/system/bin
fast-dormancy
Code:
EventStream
EventStreamPluginTwitter
facebook
fast-dormancy-incall
fast-dormancy-incall.odex
fast-dormancy-wakeup
FBCalendarSync
FBIAppShare
FBMediaDiscovery
FBMusicLike
FBSetupwizard
GenieWidget
helpapp
Home (Stock)
JapaneseIME
PlusOne
POBoxSknMono
POBoxSknPink
POBoxSknSelector
POBoxSknWood
PostViewer
retaildemo
SemcEmail
SEMCFacebookProxy
SemcPowerSaver
SEMCSetupWizard
SocialEngineCore
SocialEngineFacebookPlugin
SocialEnginePicassaPlugin
SocialPane-Apps
SocialPane-FeedWidget
SocialPane-FriendsWidget
SocialPane-StatusWisdget
storefront
talkback
textinput-chn
timescaperssplugin
TimescapeSpline
TwitterPostViewer
UpdateCentre
WapPush
Again best thing is, if you do not understand what something does leave it alone! As I found with a quick bit of searching many people have different opinions as to what actually constitutes 'bloatware' so don't follow blindly or you may brick your phone!!
I am not responsible for any errors, heartache, bricking, or otherwise problems you may have as a result of the above advice.
You mean simply adding .bak to any apk would freeze it??
Can you just give me an example??
Use the thank button, it's there for a reason

The list of apps I provided above - I use Root Explorer and simply rename each like this:
From: EventStream.apk
To: EventStream.apk.bak
Changes the actual icon of the file - you could put anything after .apk and it will prevent them from running as its no longer a valid file format for Android. BUT..best thing is it stays where it is originally located, and it doesn't lose its permissions either.
Bit more fiddling around than Rom Toolbox or Titanium but I prefer to pick and chose what I am doing and rather read about each .apk as I go through them one by one. Also allows me to do the same thing to any .odex file that may be there as well.

Can you safely uninstal Backup and Restore default app? It gets on my nerves because it keeps running, and if I kill it, the whole phone reboots. But it reall needs to be safe because removing Talk already messed up my ability to download from Market.
Thanks.
Yes you can, you will have no problem after removing it.
About Google Talk... you can remove Google Talk but you must NOT remove gtalkservice cause the market app wont work after that (as you already said).
I always remove the following apps:
backupandrestore
datatrafficswitch.apk
facebook
GeoTag
Google Maps
Google Maps (Street)
Google Talk
neoreader
officelauncher
officeupdateservice
pccompanion
Peggle
playnowappinstaller
playnowback
playnowclient
ReadyToRun
roadsync
semcemailsmall
SEMCSetupWizard
SnsContactImageCacheProvider
stk
sync
syncwizard
timescapepluginmanager
timescapeprovider
Timescape-smallui
trackid
uWlopProvider
VoiceSearch
wisepilot
By the way, i'm using Flashtool application to remove the abovementioned apps.
I just use Root Uninstaller from Market because I'm a dummy. Can't learn the heavier stuff for the life of me.
So I will upadte servce to fix my phone and do it all again.
If DID in fact remove Talk And Talk service! So if I leave the service alone it should be fine?
Since you seem very knowledgeable, I also removed default sms app and delivery reports in Handcent stopped working. Is it best I leave default app alone?
Thanks so much!
(Oh, btw, I was told to leave sync alone?)

Yep, gtalkservice is needed by Market so you should just remove Google Talk.
Unfortunately i cant answer your question about sms but it seems logical to leave the default sms app alive and kicking in your phone.
The 2 sync services are the ones who are used by the SonyEricsson Sync Service which i dont use at all!
Google mail/contacts/calendar work normally including PCCompanion/Outlook sync.
PS: I'm really a noob you know. I just like sharing the little things i know!
Interesting, I have removed both Google Talk Service and Google Talk Storage and I can still download from the market.

Storage or service?
I uninstalled both with Titanium Backup
Lucky ladies! My market stopped working without gtalkservice.
@xeperiaforme:
Have you tried to copy the conversations.apk using Root Explorer to the /system/app folder and set the permissions similar to what the other applications have: rw-r--r-- ? You then have to reboot your phone.
The same with gtalk and gtalk service provider.
Untill you manage to get the stock messaging back you can do this (I have checked this by removing the stock messaging on my phone and sensing an sms from handcent to another turned off phone and got the delivery report when that phone was turned on; until then, the sms status was pending):
For delivery reports in Handcent, don't use the handcent menu - delivery rpt.
Instead go to the handcent menu - settings - notification settings - sent notifications - check "notify when message is received (needs carrier support)".
Then go to Receive message settings - check "Delivery reports" and uncheck Handcent delivery report.
If you notice the time stamps on the delivery reports are not correct because you are in a different time zone, the use the "set delivery report offset" to add or remove hours

Do the 2 sync srvices run on it's own and drain battery or did you just remove it because of freeing space?
For space mostly but they might consume some phone resources as well.
Oh thanks again And what are these for?:
semcemailsmall
SEMCSetupWizard
SnsContactImageCacheProvider
uWlopProvider
semcemailsmall --- sonyericsson email app (not gmail)
SEMCSetupWizard --- first boot setup wizard
SnsContactImageCacheProvider --- timescape
uWlopProvider --- timescape
there you go!!!

Here are some system applications from my stock 2.1 backup. Unzip the zip on your sd card and copy the apks you might have deleted to your /system/app folder. Don't forget to set proper permissions for the copied apks.
Thanks to both of you
Good stuff

sent from this midget x10 mini pro using cm7.2.3.3 14.5
you can delete conversations.apk from system/app folder
and rename handcent.apk to conversations.apk and push it to system/folder
with permisions r-w-r-r.
for me its way easier with root explorere, its all in phone, no computer required

I've cleaned up a little bit my Player after obtaining root privileges, this thread will help you if you want to do the same.
So, below is the list of the stock apps of my Samsung Galaxy Player 4.2 that I've freezed using Gemini App Manager (see attached apk, it is a free app).
Disabling those apps is good for me, but may not be good for you. The reson for this is that I don't use social services and don't own a google account, I try to use free software and avoid proprietary ones (as much as it is possible), I will try to warn in parentheses if you may need the app, but not when the name of the app says for itself (e.g. YouTube), just keep them if you use them.
For the open source and free apps I would greatly recommend the F-Droid repository, enable Unknown sources in your settings, install the F-Droid apk and use that app for obtaining free software. You can also add the Guardian Project's F-Droid repository into F-Droid's repositories list to have more nice apps.
I would recommend not to immediately remove the apps that you don't need, freeze them, let some time to pass, then you can remove them if everything is OK. Here is my list of the freezed apps:
Code:
AccuWeather.com
Adobe Flash Player 10.1
AllShare
BadgeProvider (Keep this if you use the Gmail app)
Books
Calendar (I use the [url=http://f-droid.org/repository/browse/?fdfilter=calendar&fdid=com.droidwave.offlinecalendar&fdpage=1]Offline Calendar[/url])

com.sec.android.app.lcdtest
com.sec.android.providers.downloads
Dialer
Dialer Storage

DRM content

Dual Clock
EA Games
Email (I use [url=http://f-droid.org/repository/browse/?fdfilter=mail&fdid=com.fsck.k9&fdpage=1]K-9[/url])

Gmail (I don'y use it)
Google Backup Transport (I don't use Google Backup)

Email notification (stock email app from gapps corresponding to cm9.1.0) does not get displayed in status bar. It doesn't even get checked. Emails arrive only once I open the app manually. I did check "enable norifications" and check every 5 mins. The same setup works fine on stock rom. I also tried aokp jb milestone rom, and there it also didn't work. I have a feeling I am doing something wrong. Does anyone have an idea?

Had some probs like this with notifications from FB or G+ Messengers....
Never had the CM9.1, but maybe it's the same.
So only thing helped was to flash another Rom.
and updating to a newer release later.
Nobody knows why this happened.
Maybe u try it for urself, too. (f.ex. with CM10)
CHEERS
Well, I did try. I flashed the AOKP JB Milestone 1. And it was the same thing. Stock email app notifications were not working. So I started to think that I am doing something wrong.

Notifaction is activ, right?
Do u set something on a kernel spacific app?
ExTweaks for example?
Well, I did turn on notification in email app. And other notifications (missed calls, sms, calendar...) are working. I'm not aware of any general notification switch within CM9.1.0.
I don't have ExTweaks isntalled;

Nothign special except the "Dev tool" but maybe u never used it or at lest not for something important now.
Last option is that the prob is kernel related so...
Maybe u can try to flash another kernel? (f.ex. Dorimanx [if already on JB Rom the v7.16, otherwise the v5.92])
Sorry for no better idea for now.

Hey buddy, I had this issue appear randomly when I started using JB roms. Nothing I tried worked but then I found a solution online, give it a try and let me know if it works.
Just go to settings > data usage then press your menu button and make sure you tick auto sync data.
God knows why it started happening but this sorted it straightway away and I finally started getting my emails pushed through ok hit thanks if I helped.

I go it. It was me after all. Unlike stock ROM, and CM7 ROMs, CM9/10 and AOPK ROMs actually add accounts for individual provider that you use with stock email app. And since I never use any sync, I have it turned off. And that actually turned off yahoo and gmail email accounts too. Once I got the sync for yahoo and gmail on, the notifications started to work.
Actually, this probably has nothing to do with ROM, but gapps, which tend to come different for each ROM.
By the way, did you check settings -> accounts -> google -> click on [email protected] and at the bottom tick gmail.
It will sync then
That's what I'm talking about. It's not always there. Sometimes it is within google account. Sometimes it is in separate [email protected] account. Sometimes there is no sync for it at all. Depending on gapps you get.
Hi, I'm using ICS (6.1.B.0.544) for a month and a half and I came across the following app faults which little or nothing interfere with the proper functioning of the phone:
1) ALBUM App (Photo Editor) - Some FX Effects are corrupted;
2) ALBUM App (Online Tab) - Facebook photos: only updates photos posted by 2 FB contacts (the choice of the contacts do not have any sort of discretion and they are always the same). I have about 1500 contacts and the function worked on GB gallery. (Note: Facebook inside Xperia: Facebook Photo Extension & Friends Music&Video both checked, the latter works flawlessly in the Walkman application);
3) BROWSER App (Bookmarks) - Can't find any option ( in Accounts & Sync) to synchronize with Chrome / Google bookmarks. Note: In Chrome / Google account sync options only have encryption for passwords).
Anyone with the same faults?
