[Q] Has anyone managed to install new Google Now/Search without root? - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

Not sure if it's possible, but it's the only thing I'm looking to be able to do with my phone right now since I can't root ( HBoot 1.15 problem ).
Could the manual steps outlined HERE work if I'm using a stock phone with now unlock or root? It just seems like there's no need for root with any of these steps, maybe I'm wrong?
Steps:
Manual:
Download The Google Now Apk. [Link below]
Open up Root Explorer and go to your downloaded apk.
Rename the apk to "GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk"
Now go to [System - App] mount R/O and rename "GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk" to "GoogleBackUp.bak"
Now copy the downloaded apk [The one you renamed to "GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk"] to [System - App]
Reboot

Why can't you root?

You can still root with the new HBOOT, you just can't get S-OFF, which is not the same thing. And those instructions you quoted won't work without root since Root Explorer requires root.

Yes sorry rather then ask I should have told them that. Use HTC dev unlock, fastboot flasg recovery and then flash root installer. My guide doesn't have any tutorials but it explains just about everything you should know about your phone, its worth a read. I explain soff, HTC dev unlock, recovery, ROM, radios, you name it and I probably already added it. I even have very specific troubleshooting scenarios and I explain the cause (and solution for the harder problems)

I don't want to HTCDev unlock. I'll wait for S-Off for 1.15. I can access the root of my device over this program on my computer without being rooted... Just figured I'd ask.

Root access and accessing the root of your phone are not the same thing. Also for this particular phone, the internal memory is considered the internal SD card, this is not the root filesystem. HTC just uses a screwy workaround. You can unlock and root or remove root relock and restore to stock at anytime and you can do most of what's possible with soff there's no reason to not do so even if waiting for soff
Hmm root some how slipped my mind, I guess I'm off to add an explanation of superuser permissions to my guide

yes but you cant copy with out root.

You have to root. And I'd suggest dev unlocking now anyway. You can always soff later if it's found

Yes i have done it
what you have to do is download 2 apks, but first tell what device, is it ics 4.0.3+ etc.

[New ROOT METHOD] No PC Quick ROOT!!! MT 3G SLIDE

J Ok so in my never ending struggle against the Evil Eclair/T-Mo/HTC NAND Protection and the Futility of Trying to flash a ROM With the "Supposed AndRoot QuIck Root Method" As well as a fine point from Nbetcher that the Engineering build must be flashed because Android has NAND protection while running. I have devised my own "No PC ROOT Method!!!"
Required Files (Tested For MT3G SLIDE Latest OTA Unrooted Stock)
1.Download Androot From Location of Choosing (I'm Using Version 1.6.2)
2.Download ESPRIMG.zip (ENG build)
3.Download SlideEng-Package.zip
4.Download Custom Rom Of Your Choosing(Mine Is CM 6.1.1 Stable)
5.Download Android Terminal Emulator(From Market)
6.Download Root Explorer Android (Requires Root) (From Market Or Some Place Online)
7.Download File Explorer (Dev:Adao Team)(From Android Market)

Please Note I Am NOT The DEV Behind these Apps nor am I Resposible For Any Damages You May Incur To Your Device or Warranty by using this Method! Also Before anyone says I repped someone off remeber I accidentally discovered this using 2 failed methods because they essentially cancel each other out.(The Latter Nbetchers works just not after the AndRoot One)!!!
So...
1st Download/Install all needed files from market( File Manager Android Terminal Emulator)
2nd Download all zip images, Recoveries, Roms, apps from phone browser Directly To SD ROOT(Google em until I get links up on Dev Forum)
3rd. Unzip SlideEng-Package.zip To Root using File Manager or Other Zip Program for android(Andro-Zip Works Well)
4th Change Name of Clockwork to Update.zip(Case Sensative)
5th Install AndRoot And Run Root Me With Install Su & Temp Root/Unroot After Reboot Selected(Or Else You Will Boot Loop)
6th Install And Run Root Explorer then Copy and paste flash_img and mtd0.img to /data/local on android device by multi-select copy then RM R/W in program in upper left on data local folder.
7th IMPORTANT!!! Long Press and hold each copied file and set permissions to allow read and write on both user and the lowest option (I Think Dev or system)
8th Run Android Terminal Emulator and type the following commands verbatim spaces included Pressing enter after each line($ n # will be there provided you follwed all steps if not go back to androot and root again):
$ su
# cd /data/local
# chmod 04755 flash_image
# ./flash_image misc mtd0.img
Now power off and reboot using VOL-DOWN + POWER
It'll reboot into the HBoot Screen and ask if you want to Check ESPRIMG.zip after Verifying it will ask you to flash Select Yes (VOL-UP) And Wait DO NOT POWER DOWN OR TAKE OUT BATTERY!!!
Once its Completed it will ask you to Reboot select no Instead and Go To Recovery
Now Select APPLY Update.zip to flash CLOCKWORK RECOVERY YAY!!! :-D Now We Can Flash a Custom Rom With Root and Even Go As Far As S-OFF!!! But Please Be Sure Its Already On Your Micro SD...
Select Wipe Data Factory Reset by Scrolling with VOL- UP/DOWN or Track Pad and Use Power/Trackpad TO Select.
Now Use Install Zip from SD Card to Install Custom Rom(Flash GApps Second if downloaded and desired if using CM Mod 6.1.1) Now Reboot And Enjoy!!! If you Wanna Flash Anything Else Use Rom Manager From Market and Som Custom Roms to Boot into Clockwork!!! Thanks to all the Devs and their tools and immense knowledge for Making this Possible! Thanks To All The ROM Chefs Too!!!

Edit:nvm, ill try it when i get my replacement slide.
I don't think the slide needs S-OFF to write to data but I do think it needs root beforehand, or at least shell root.
just to make it easier to anyone flashing this, i would put links to DL's of those files. first thing i noticed when i read. put me off to this method.
btw, this is me trying to help, not ripping on you

I don't think so? If /data couldn't be written to without root or s-off, how would people install apps who never rooted their phones? Where is the system data stored and modified? /data is fully modifiable I'm pretty sure.
I'm willing to admit I could be wrong on that but I thought apps were installed in /data because it was the system calling the package installer not the user.

In terms of read/write permissions, the system has the same permissions as the user. The system can't write to /system if the user can't, and vice versa. /data and /cache have no nand protection

In the post I did add if I had the time I would post links if not ill do it later to whomever above stated their statement. If you don't want to "Try" it don't and don't comment. It was an accident I found it and I have since replicated my process on 3 slides and it works. The Reason it does is because gaining temporary root inside android even without gaining full being blocked by nand or S-Off can be can be used to modify the permissions of system files while the memory is running tho not the actual NAND itself which I believe S-OFF does... So when I said 6th mount the drive as R/W in root explorer there is an option to remount the drive R/W to allow you to long press the items in that folder and change their permissions then I said unmount to save the permission fix that's what the Temp Root Gained from AndRoot Does.... Now I'm gonna try and update my Original post with links for people who want an esier time doing this like I would have liked and for the. Sarcastic ones so then you can just press the Thumbs Up button ok?

Your instructions don't have anything to do with /system I don't know what you are babbling about. I'm not disproving your root method, I was just trying to explain that /data is not nand protected. /system IS nand protected, and without s-off or a r/w overlay you wouldn't even be able to modify the permissions of files in /system, but since your root method has to do with /data it works.

The only thing about 4shared is that it doesn't work right on the stock HTC web browser, since javascript is kinda glitchy on that one. Works fine on froyo/cm6.1.1 with the aosp browser, but for a TRUE pcless method you need direct or mediafire links I think.
I post links because everyone *****es and yet someone still *****es. Those aren't my uploads, I simply posted them so people would stop *****ing. I personally haven't had issues with 4shared even with the stock browser back before I rooted my phone. If you want to reupload them to another hosting site be my guest but like I said, they aren't my uploads.
Stop whining

permroot for S-off Flyer

How i got perm root on my Flyer (does not give S-off just permroot of an S-off device)
YOU NEED TO HAVE A S-OFF device!
1)Start off with a fresh install of ROM check RUU thread
2)Used temp root from FlyerROOT.zip Thanks TeamWin for the temproot method Here is thread for orgnial files)
open FlyerROOT\ADB (on pc)
Make sure that you have USB debugging turned on (on phone) and drivers installed to PC
Run Fre3voFlyer.bat (from FlyerROOT\ADB)
3)check in ternimal ((on phone) need to install from market)) and see if you have root (I got permission denied)
4)ran superonclick with Gingerbreak exploit (thanks CLShortFuse for making this tool) (on pc) - S1C thread
open FlyerROOT and click on Superoneclick.exe
change exploit to Gingerbreak
hit root
Installed busybox when asked by S1C
Run Su test and looked on phone and Superuser asked for permission
5)Tried opening a app that uses root (root explorer) and SU FC on me
6)go to market and make sure you had latest version Installed (i had an update I needed)
7)Update binary when opening SU for the first time
Allow the SU app SU priviliages (funny I know)
8)Open a root app (root explorer again) and SU asked for permission
Test for permroot
turned off fastboot
deleted a system/app file (in this case htcfmwidget and htcfmwidge.obex) -using the r/w option in root explorer
Rebooted phone and reopened root explorer and looked for removed files and they were not there
None of the tools that I included were made by me they were made by the people I thanked. I just wrote the script for the tools to work. go to their threads and thank them.
Disclaimer I am not responsible for breaking your phone, melting it, or anything that may happen when doing this. Remember this is your choice
I have been able to use Root explorer, Titanium backup, terminal emulator and was able to remove APKs from the system folder that I do not want.
Thanks a lot! I followed your steps and got the perm-root for my Flyer. :-D

Do you know if this will work for the View as well?
this method not working for my s-off flyer. I can temp-root but cannot perm-root using this method.
When using temp-root seem that my /system folder got rw but I don't know why I cannot change the permission to ro. Anyone noticed?
When using SuperOneClick, I got this error and the script looping like no end >>
mount: mounting /dev/block/mmcblk0p25 on /system failed: Device or resource busy
OK
Great News Everyone!!! Thanks for the instruction. I just got the S-Off from Revolutionary. And now Permroot from this Thread. However I had slight issues with the direction. I still ended up having the files after reboot. I know I deleted those files. But everything else seems to be working. I have Root Explorer and Titanium Back-up working. Quite Excellent. Thanks!

Hi crackeyes,
I am not very sure what need to be done on step1. I am lost after opend the link and there are many version of ROMs. Which to use? and what I should do next? Thanks.
My device is S-OFF with Revolutionary.
When I click root on superoneclick it stopped to "waiting device"....
test adb manually, to see if it is communicating.
Maby 'couse I have'nt installed HTC sync yet!
But I was sure that worked since "revolutionary" made very well the dirty job!
Now I'm installing HTC sync and re-tryng!

yongck7, you need to grab the correct ROM for your device. You should read further and it will explain which ROM is for Which. Mine is WIFI only, which was like the 2nd or 3rd comment on that Thread. Once you are sure it is correct ROM, it's pretty simple. Download and execute the file while your flyer is connected. I'm not sure if Debugging is needed, but I had mine on. (Setting/Application/Development) But Like he said, start fresh, I tried this after I S-Off my flyer and it didn't work.

[Q] Disable future DNA OTA updates?

I am running stock DNA, rooted, and with CWM touch recovery. For myself, being root is not merely a luxury, it is a need. Most importantly, I cannot stand having a crippled unix terminal without busybox, which of course, requires root.
I know not what the imminent OTA will bring, but root is too precious to risk losing. I would therefore like to engage in a DNA-specifc discussion about disabling the OTA update.
From what I can tell so far, the two methods include:
1) renaming the otacerts.zip file in /etc/security to a .bak file. This will not work in the present case, since /etc is mounted at /system/etc, and /system can only temporarily be mounted rw due to us being stuck with "S-ON" for now.
2) installing "FOTAkill.apk", or, flashing its corresponding zip (attached below) in custom recovery. Again, in the present case, this file was written for the EVO, and will most certainly not work. The updater-script in the zip can be modified to reflect the correct mount points, but there is a corresponding binary which I have no clue contains what, and would certainly need some expert opinion about.
Any ideas ye fine fellers?
You could always do load ota root keeper from the market back your root up temp un root via app update ota and then re root using the app, I have done this on other devices and I never lost root. Worked well. Might be worth a shot.

There are system writable kernels out there, and you can always rename your files in recovery. S-Off is not an issue in this scenario.

I have indeed heard this alternative thrown around but I am not willing to chance it; I have seen an equal amount of horror stories about people having their systems fried with this method (the Droid X for instance, which I had and where the last update broke root).

I will look at what's out there and if it is stable enough to be flashed. How does one rename files in recovery though? I rebooted into CWM (touch) and I see no such option - unless you can remount a partition and rename files in it somehow.

This avenue seems promising. Has anyone tried this before? Also, how does one delete these in the S-ON situation? (I'm assuming recovery is the answer). I feel if I remounted rw, deleted and then rebooted, they will be right back where they are.

Great... thanks! I am looking into custom kernels. By the way, if custom kernels that do allow write to /system can be concocted, why is S-ON an issue at all? I was under the impression that this has to do with NAND memory being inaccessible, which seems to be a lower level issue than the kernel.

How to root now?

I used to have a copy of Hasoon's tool, but I reformatted my PC a while ago and no longer have it.
I have a replacement for my son's broken phone, but I can't get it rooted or even install recovery because I get the Main Version is older error. I used to just use the tool, but all links to it have been removed from everywhere I can find. Is there anything I can do to get that back?

It is so simple to root the Rezound, there is no real need for an all in one tool just remember that it will wipe the phone...
1) Download the latest SuperSU.zip from here: http://download.chainfire.eu/supersu and place it in the root of the SD Card
2) Unlock via HTCdev (instructions are all over the place, including at HTCdev.com) and verify booting and operation
3) Extract recovery.img from the latest TWRP package and place in adb directory
4) Boot into Hboot and then start Fastboot
5) Execute "fastboot boot recovery.img"
6) Install/Flash SuperSU.zip from Step #1
7) Reboot
Done... That's it, your rooted and no MainVer issues!
Although, I would keep it stock until it OTA's to the latest version... unless it is already 4.5.605.14, then you have to do it the way I mentioned, the all in one tool won't work due to Hboot being to new.
To add; you may want to install busybox as some root apps need it. Its simple as getting Stericson's BusyBox app and pressing install then rebooting.

No... On your computer you should have installed ADB (Android Debug Bridge), this is what gives you the adb.exe and fastboot.exe files to talk to the phone and perform operations from your PC... The directory that contains these files (usually .\adb\platform-tools\) is where you copy this file... These commands are done on your PC and the recovery.img is pushed to the phone.
There are tons of guides on this that are literally step by step, even Youtube videos, no offense, bur if you don't comprehend some of these steps you might want to do some more research before continuing.

OK, cool. If you need more assistance, fell free to ask.
Just for future reference... avoid the "one click" tools, especially on the Rez, they are mostly out of date. Plus knowing how to do it manually is usually quite useful.

Root access development

Before you read this trough : This is not a question about how to root my phone or add root access to an app. This is about how I can add root acess to my phone. I mean like ading root acess to a phone where no root is yet released. If anyone knows a github repo with the commits of adding root to the phone, please tell me. Thanks!

I currently don't look to compile for a specific device but I want it as basic knowledge when it comes to the case of a new device that has no root yet.

"How I can add root access to my phone" = root your phone? There's not much difference between the two sentences. Unless you mean adding the root path to the device without installing SuperSU or any other SU app?

Look. You have a phone that doesn't have root access. So what I would do is go to xda, find a root IMG to flash on my phone and then flash it. That would give me root access to the phone. The thing is, if there is no flashable IMG I would develop one by myself. Now I can't find any tutorials or sources of how to build a image like that.

1. Such methods would depend on your phone, not all phones go through .img file flash.
2. Usually I would associate .img files as kernel. So I assume you want to flash a custom kernel?
3. If you indeed want to flash a custom kernel, you still need root on the ROM before the custom kernel can have root access.

There are several steps to go about to developing a rooting procedure for a device when none has been released yet. The first key step would be to identify whether the device has a looked bootloader. If it does then you will need to resort to an exploit to gain root access rather then flashing a pre-rooted boot.img for example unless you can figure you a way of bypassing the img signature check which in many cases using an exploit is easier. A good basic place to start looking for exploits is here. You will then have to do research on how to exploit the security flaw which involves knowledge of Assembly, C, and Linux. If the bootloader is unlocked you can attempt to make a superboot or autoroot type boot.img which I would suggest taking an existing .img of those types and disasembling them to learn how they were created. Let me know if you still have any questions.
