Hey guys, I am looking into an HTCDev unlock solution for your Incredible 4G devices and I think I may have something here. I'm interested in the /misc partition. The one that andybones sent me only said...
Code:
recovery
--wipe_all
FNOC
FNOC
but the /misc partition should have more info in it than that. Here is what my EVO 4G LTE says in /misc...
Code:
SPCS_001
DeviceWarmBoot
CE Serial InUse
Debug Cable Ena
CE USB InUse
ClearAutoImage
2.13.651.1
EBR_Update
GiftDone
recovery
--preload_content=/sdcard/update.zip
FNOC
FNOC
I'm thinking you guys might have had the same issue we did where flashing a recovery borked the /misc partition. (ours looked like andybones does now before we found the issue was recovery) So, if there is anyone out there that has a stock, rooted device (and DIDN'T flash recovery!), please let me know. I will work with you 1 on 1.
The other option is to RUU back to stock (if you kept your unlock token), htcdev unlock, root, don't flash recovery and then check /misc partition. Post in here if you want to help, adb knowledge would be best. Please tell me what you have done to your phone. We will go from there
No one, really?
I will work with you on this one. I installed recovery though so I'll need to RUU back and do the whole unlock process again. I can't jump on it right now but should be ok to do so in a couple of hours.

yeah suprised no one has jumped on this given our biggest threads are always about "how to root or why we cant root" lol

True - But I think the only people who regularly check this forum are the ones who missed out on the unlock and are still unrooted.
Hell, if he needed someone with an unrooted phone I would have been all over this like white one rice.

Yeah, I saw it seconds after he posted it. I just didn't have anything to say because I'm stuck unrooted, otherwise I would have jumped on it, too.
Also, I was unaware that the unlock code stayed forever. Awesome for you guys. I know the unlock token that the bootloader generates every time I check it changes, as part of HTC's new security measures, so I really didn't think reusing the same code would work, since it's a one-time password and all...
I didn't reply earlier because I thought -viperboy- was looking specifically for roooted stock users that didn't change their recovery. I changed my recovery. So I wasn't certain how much use I would be. If it just takes going back to the ruu then I would be willing to help as well.
Might not be helping after all. I can find my unlock_code.bin file. :/

Not much to say yet. -viperboy- is looking in to the file that I sent him. I will do some more experiments tomorrow (can't today as I am at work) to see what causes files to change. After I flashed the recovery nothing changed for me in the /misc partition but once I went back to the stock recovery files disappeared.
That's where things are at on my side of the fence. I'm sure -viperboy- will post if he finds anything.
Might have an idea for root! Send me a PM only if you have ADB experience and are available right now!!

A lot of people have said they cant get recovery to work when they use the HTC unlock method. I too had this problem with twrp. But IEF sent me a link to a CWM that worked fine for me. It didnt reboot when I tried to go into recovery like twrp did. So give this one a shot. I flashed in fastboot: fastboot flash recovery filenname.img
I was able to also do a nandroid restore.

yes, because I didnt want it to get buried in a thread or have to post the link in the "27" topics that are discussing recovery not working. This thread isnt like those. it offers a solution to the recovery problem (at least one that worked for me)

+1 on this, it needed a new thread so it doesn't get burried. Hopefully this will work for the people that never had s-off before.
Thanks for the tip - this worked. I had tried the newer version of CWM without success.
I already rooted with s-off and have the eng hboot myself but I was wondering...
Once you take this update can you flash the eng hboot and then flash twrp?
Thankyou for recovery. Got my root back with it.

nope, well I'm not sure. I know I wasnt able to on my buddies phone who I used the HTC unlock method(his phone was new never rooted or anything like that) I went to flash the eng boot and it would start to parse the zip the kick out back to the bootloader with no error message. Also I couldnt flash splash screens. When I tried the zip it did the same thing as the eng bootloader zip and when I tried flashing in FB I got an error about a signed bootloader. I think they only partially unlocked the phone. You can flash roms and certain recoveries(not sure why) but I dont think you can flash bootloaders, radios or splashes (have only confirmed not being able to flash splashes and the eng hboot so far)
I can also confirm I was able to flash a rom (I used this one from Haus: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1223979) after flashing this recovery.

What you just said contradicted itself. There are already 27 topics on the subject (hyperbole), so let's make another to pile on top of it so it doesn't get buried. However, if everything thinks this way we will get another pile of topics that will bury each other. If every stuck with the same thread from the beginning they would never be buried under duplicate threads.

I have only seen threads about recovery not working after the HTC unlock. I didnt see any about a solution. Only people saying"recovery not working after HTC unlock" So yeah instead of posting the solution in all of those "recovery not working threads" I created a new thread offering a solution.
All I see is a bunch of threads full of people whining about how many threads there are. Seriously - it's like a bunch of retards trying to hump a doorknob. Let's move on.

If this is the case, then I'd have to argue that this is only a partial unlock... Its not worth it in my opinion to give up your warranty and still not have full unlock.

I agree, Glad I did revolutionary on my phone fully unlocked and still have my warranty. Although most warranty issues I've had over the years have all been hardware related.

I guess we can call it "Partia-Root". Yeah, that's the root where you kind of have root access to the device and S-On at the same time. I wonder if the S-On is really the second half of the "Real-Root" that we are lucky enough to have gotten from Revolutionary.
This thread is good as it does present the solution (modified recovery) to those that were completely stuck before but it does bring to light just what you get/don't get with the HTC Unlock.

What version of recovery did you try?
So has anyone gotten a newer version of recovery to flash yet?
So i was kinda scared but i knew this day would come, VZW is pushing a update to all rezounds with H-boot 2.11. Concitering we dont have S-off yet this usually wouldnt be a problem but H-boot 2.11 breaks temp root. I have been using it for a while and it fails to push SU.
Just a warning so no one gets stuck without root
What about the people who are fully unlocked with perm root ? What happens if we run the update
Update failed in recovery for me. I've deleted some bloat though.

As far as I can tell, the update will not run. I let it download to my Rezound and then it auto-restarted after 3 minutes. Booted into recovery and said update failed. I rebooted from recovery and once booted up, I got a message saying "No new software update available" or something to that effect. Clicked "Finish" and since then, my phone has been working like before. From what I just experienced, there is no harm to your phone if you let it try to install, but nothing will happen either, so there is no benefit.

You can only update radios when your device is locked or relocked. The ? Is can we unlock after we are on hboot 2.11

I am rather new... I'm not entirely sure:
1) How to get stock recovery back, haha.
2) If I even want to get it back. If HBoot is updated by this OTA, I don't know that I want it running and screwing up my root. Is that possible if I am unlocked and perm-rooted?
To be clear, I am willing to experiment for your guys' benefit, but would just like to be sure what I am getting myself into.

I'm not entirely sure but if you are willing to experiement that would be huge.
it does update to 2.11 hboot, so the question is can you then do the unlock and root again.
i think you need to be on stock recovery to the update to take.

OK, well I can't do anything here from work, so when I get settled at home later tonight, I will see what I can do. I don't mind losing root until someone can figure out a workaround for those stuck with 2.11 hboot, mainly because a custom ROM is the only benefit I use from root at the moment. I can't figure out tethering to my Transformer Prime for the time-being anyhow, so losing Nils' ROM is a hit I'm willing to take for a bit.
If someone else does not figure out what you need before later tonight, I will do what I can.
By the way, it would help if you set up some steps for me. Like, do you want me to restore stock recovery, then check to see if stock recovery and custom ROM lets me install the update, then if it doesn't work, go back to stock everything and see if it works, then if it doesn't work go to relocked and see if it works? Just lay out each operation you want me to do to test your theories. I know far too little to be making up my own procedures. Inevitably, I'll finish and people will say, "Well, what about... and what about..."
I just don't want to waste my time or yours.

I need some help, and as I always say I don't ask for help unless I really can't find a solution. I tried unlocking my bootloader using the HTCDev method, but when I try to flash the unlock code bin file it gets stuck saying its sending and never moves. Same happened weeks back with my HTC Mytouch 4g Slide and I had somehow got it to work after fiddling here and there. I have HTC Sync uninstalled (I even reinstalled it to uninstall it again and keep the drivers) and I even eliminated my PDANet which seems to cause issues in situations like this. Rebooted my computer literally over 10 Times, same bull. I just can't remember how I got it working on my MyTOUCH. SO...I'm on hboot 2.09 and was wondering if these files would downgrade the hboot or something. All drivers seem to be proper, so I don't see why I'm having issues. I'm familiar with the adv and fastboot tools, I even made the android folder on the main harddrive directory that every post recommends , have the unlock_code.bin there but its the issue of not pushing. I have an old PC but if it worked on my MyTOUCH at one point I doubt it has anything to do with it.
So I wanted to know if its possible to downgrade the hboot to use a different method.
The method of rooting the phone is the same regardless of Hboot, so downgrading won't help you. Click the link in my sig and go to the section that contains the bootloader unlocking tools. Click on the WinDroid toolkit and see if you have any luck with that, instead.

Not root, unlocking the bootloader. It says Sending and never does a thing. It should say Okay immediately after pushing the file but its not doing anything for me. Its supposed to quickly give you a disclaimer on your phone to select whether or not to unlock the BL, but all my phone does is sit in fastboot mode. So I wanted to know if these stock restore things can downgrade the HBOOT as well so I can unlock it in a different manner instead of HTCDev's method. I've been stuck with a locked bootloader for a week since purchasing this phone. My MyTouch4g slide had the same issue but I had done something that got it going, in this case, I've tried everything. Also these self made executable programs like WinDroid give me a "not a valid Win32 application" message on my laptop. They just won't run at all.

There is no other method to unlock the bootloader aside from HTC Dev. Doesn't matter what Hboot version you're on or what software version you have. Even programs like regaw_leinad's toolkit uses HTC Dev-it just automates the entire process.

Tried to unroot and go completely back to stock and I am now somehow stuck in the bootloader. If I run the RUU it gives an error because I do not have the correct version of hboot. If I try and roll back my hboot I get an error that says signature check failed... and it's a never ending circle. I've been working on this for about 5 hours now and I just really want it to work again. Any help would be greatly appreciated...
EDIT: I am currently locked and s-on while stuck in the bootloader. this seems to be my main issue
Ur pretty much Sol. Go get a warranty replacement

Flash the stock recovery and see if that helps.

I've tried that. Still get a signature verification error. If I try and flash anything I get a signature verification error.
Redownload the files.
You're getting signature errors because the files are corrupted or you have the wrong files.

I've re-downloaded everything multiple times and it's a no go. I don't think it's because the files are bad I think it's because I am trying to dwongrade my hboot. if I go up a version it flashes fine but you cannot downgrade an hboot on an htc with S-ON
You're right, I assumed you were s-off. Looking back at your original post you mentioned you were s-on and I missed that.
Try moonshine s-off.

Tried that as well. The firmware upgrade seems to work but moonshine errors out.
Try revone or beaups new rurunner method which is posted in the original android development forum.

I don't think I can use those tools because I cannot use adb commands since the phone will not boot.
EDIT: and I have actually tried using Rumrunner and revone I know won't work because I can't push files to the phone with ADB

Rumrunner doesn't mention adb, most likely you have to be in fastboot.

If you have problems go to andirc, beaups and other great developers are there to help you out.

If your s-on and locked then your screwed till we get a new leaked RUU. Only way to get it fixed is to pay $35 on ebay for someone to JTAG. You have a brick unfortunately at this moment. I claimed warranty on mine and got a new one. Verizon will just RUU it and give it back out most likely.
i went through everything. heres my thread when i had the issue about a week ago. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2549943

I went to the Verizon store yesterday to try and get something figured out... My phone is 2 days out of manufacturers warranty, I am not a happy camper... Looking at getting a ONE off of Swappa or something until a leaked RUU is out and I can fix and sell my DNA
Talked to that wonderful individual beaups on IRC for a good bit yesterday. He was able to get it sorted out. I needed to flash the new 2.07 RUU. It isn't an exe like the 1.15 though. It's a zip file that you can just go fastboot oem rebootRUU and flash it that way. Worked like a charm, took the OTA's and ran rumrunner and just like that I'm back in business.

You're rooted. Run RUU tool to unroot and go back to complete stock. TWRP is the recovery menu and the gateway to flashing new roms and kernels etc.

Okay so i downloaded and unzipped, The instructions on the thread are very vague
So I think i need to use a backdoor or something cause I can't get my phone to boot into android
Quote:
Q: But what if I can't get into Android?? Surely there is something I can do!?
A: Yes, I designed a "backdoor" to allow you into VipeRUU. However, BE CAREFUL! This skips important checks that VipeRUU does when it start (most importantly, if your phone really is an EVO 4G LTE!) but it will allow you to do this procedure from the bootloader. All you have to do is create a text file in the "files" folder called "bypass.txt" and then start the program. You'll be alerted with a few warnings when doing this.
Also do I need to have the phone plugged into the computer or something. I am so sorry but I am very lost

I've never done this process myself, but I'll do my best to help you.
First: reboot into your bootloader, Hold down power key with volume down key until it reboots into the screen where you listed all that information. It should have a white bacground.
Second: Naviagte to fastboot and hit the pwoerkey
Third: Connect computer to phone with usb
Fourth: create a blank bypass.txt file and place into the file named "file" from the zip you downloaded.
Fifth: Run ViperRUU and select whichever option you need.

Are you running windows? Open up a command prompt and try to get su access through fastboot. You may not have high enough privleges. Also, do you have HTC drivers installed? Once you're inside the fastboot menu, don't touch anything. The reading on the top should say "Fastboot USB"

Here is the link to the latest RUU I wouldn't mess with VipeRUU if you are not sure what you are doing.

Do what BD619 says. I had hoped ViperRUU would work, but the stock HTC one is much easier to use and operate. Also I usually use Ubuntu in these situations due to how much easier it is to work things in Terminal than it is to use Window's command prompt. Just a thought in case you ever need to do something fastboot related in the future.

VipeRUU will work fine but he's still new this kind of stuff it can be confusing. It took me a couple tries to get it to work the first time I used it.

No matter what it's a bad sign if you need to RUU. Definitely something I never want to do. Means something major screwed up lol. Yeah I was gonna give him the regular HTC one until I read all the paranoid stuff the ViperRUU posted in his thread.
