any US carriers with unlimited data for this phone? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am returning to the states this weekend and I need to get prepaid cell service but it seems that I cant find any service that has unlimited data. I was thrilled at first to read about virgin mobile but then i found out that it is only cdma. Does anyone have any recommendations? best i found so far is H20 wireless at $60 for 2 gigs

I have had VM for almost 3 years and I use the internet fine all the time. Hell I used to play EVE Online through my phones hotspot.

I hear good things about StraightTalk. $45 a month for unlimited (within reason) everything, and uses AT&T's network.

Virgin Mobile in the US uses Sprint's network. The i9100 doesn't work on that network.

[Q] Will our phone work with straight talk.

I was wondering that if i unlocked my vibrant and ditched t mobile will the vibrant work with straight talk 45 dollar a month unlimited plan? and i was also wondering if the internet would work like 3g cause i know Straight talk runs off the verizon towers. Thanks for any info.
Nope, if Straight Talk uses Verizon the phone won't work at all. Verizon uses CDMA technology, not GSM.

According to there site they do support both GSM & CDMA. So you should be good to go.
The two straight talk phones that are gsm are on at&t, not t-mobile. But I was wondering the same thing. I have a captivate and the $45 unlimited plan is ridiculously cheap. I was wondering if I unlocked my phone and just got a straight talk sim card would that work?
I had a friend who was looking into that several months ago and found out that you can only use their phone on their system.
Somebody says it can, bou they work in a weird way because as far as i know the phones i see don't use sd card
My wife has Straight Talk and their internet is ridiculously slow, definitely not 3G.
I have a Nokia E71 on Straight Talk which uses At&T's network and I entered the SIM card into my Vibrant and was able to get calling and texts to work but not the data (Edge or 3g).
If anyone has figured out how to do the data please let me know!

+1, my wife uses straight talk. Her internet is edge at best.

Galaxy S3 on ATT Go Phone Plan

I was going to purchase a Galaxy S3 from ATT and use it on the go phone plan. The rep at the store told me if I purchased the phone and it didn't work with my go phone sim I would be unable to return the phone. I asked if all I had to do was enter in the correct APN it would work. He said he'd seen other people try and not be able to get it to work. Is this guy full of crap? I understand I wouldn't be getting LTE but figured I would be able to get 3g. I was going to enter in the APN settings that I used on my unlocked tmobile galaxy s2 on the go phone plan.
Yah the guy is full of crap. It would be work but won't be using the phone to its full potential. Have you tried StraightTalk or Tmobile Monthly4G perhaps? I'm currently on Tmo's monthly 4G $30 plan and absolutely love it. I cant imagin myself being tied down to another 2yr contract ever again. I avg around 12-18mbps down with Tmobile btw.

Thanks for the information. T mobile has poor coverage where I am located. I currently have a go phone plan but have thought about using straight talk since it uses att towers and has unlimited data if you don't abuse it.
I see. StraightTalk's data speeds are actually pretty fast. But i've heard that even though it says its unlimited, they do cap you at only 2GBs.

I heard they don't so much cap you as they actually kick you off. I use less than 1 GB a month so it won't be so much of a problem.
I would look into Straight Talk for your needs. I suggest reading this thread for some good user feedback on ST(data cap, coverage, call quality, etc) on ATT http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1681307

[Q] Anyone using their Z2 on MetroPCS network?

Long time T-Mobile customer here and thinking of leaving them. Probably would go to Metro PCS and they offer un-caped data for unlimited LTE + Talk/Text for $60.00 flat. My grandfathered $70.00 T-Mobile unlimited everything plan with -15% employer discount is $72.00 (saving about $15.00 per month incl taxes and b.s. fees) will be ending next month as my employer was dropped from their special rate.
So the question is: Are any of you using this phone on Metro PCS or even any other MVNO's in the US? To my knoclwedge Metro PCS is the only one with un-capped LTE and unlimited. And for those that are not aware - Metro PCS is part of T-Mobile now so they use SIM cards.
Feel free to chime in!

I don't have the Z2 yet. You should get LTE in with no problem. Have you checked your APN settings?

Mine works fine on T-Mobile too. All I did was download internet settings.
I had a Z, Z1 and now Z2 on TMo. All work fine.

I'm not sure how the metro T-Mobile thing is going to work, but I stayed clear of the ones running off At&t because they don't offer the same coverage for pre-paid network and coverage in my area isn't that great when you have the full network. I'm tempted to give Metro a try since I'm using VOIP while on wifi.
As for T-Mobile on the Z2, I had no issues or need to do anything special to get it working. I did start with a brand new SIM card.

From what I've read and been told - the Metro LTE is the same at T-Mobile's. Unlimited and not caped at the $60 rate plan. Coverage for me on T-Mobile isn't an issue so this is why I'm tempted to try Metro out and maybe before canceling my T-Mobile.
I was already tempted to give Metro a shot since I'd be safe at home with VOIP & could switch back next month if coverage wasn't the same. If that's the case them I'm going to have to find a local place to pick up a Metro SIM since my month is just about to end on T-Mobile.

I had to go to 2 stores to get a SIM activated only to find out that MetroPCS isn't a good carrier to use with Google voice(they can't disable carrier voicemail).
They said I can get a refund if I go back to the store I got the account from if I used less than 60min talk. Well the store isn't near my house and the 22min I spent on the phone them put me over 60min.

On vacation in Europe, data plan dropped to 2G

Hi all,
I'm vacationing with my family to Disney Paris and T-Mobile has a nifty feature of unlimited data and texting in foreign countries included in my plan.
Awesome!
Unfortunately the data is only 2G. Makes it impossible to use GPS. Surf the web or send pictures attached to a text.
Is there a mod that can bump that back up to 4G?
Thanks,
NJ

That's the reason why it's free
GPS should work fine though. You can pay to get 4G data, but it's so expensive for so little data, I wouldn't bother. Try looking for free wifi hotspots.

Go to your T-mobile account and buy a one week 200 MB data for $25 (or 2 weeks 500 MB for $50). This is fast data, the free one is 2G only.
The best data prices when traveling abroad usually entail getting a local SIM card. Prepaid or sometimes a regular (cancel anytime) plan. For example, the last time that I looked SFR France had a 1 GB data plan (3G+) for 8 Euro.

Totally forgot about this. OP, do this. Europe is so much cheaper than here for cell service, you can get something that will cover you for an entire month for about $10. You do have to make sure that your phone is unlocked though. If it isn't and you've had the phone for more than 40 days on the same tmobile account, you can ask mobile to give you the unlock code. If you haven't had it for more than 40 days, then you can just pay for one online.

That is exactly what is supposed to happen. Your connection may range from 2G through LTE when roaming internationally, however on the "free" plan you will be capped at 128kbps. Which isn't great, but it is fine for email, light web-lookups, most apps even skype calls!
You are lucky that the S5 worked out of the box. I was in London last week on an LG G3 and it took hours of fiddling with the APNs to get the damn phone to roam over there. So much of a hassle to have to find the perfect combination of mobile network/APN, that I just gave up and traded for an S5. I'm hoping that like my old iPhone 5s the data will just plain work without any fiddling.
T-mobile's free data plan may sound slow, but compared to roaming plans that existed before, this is the best thing since sliced bread! Imagine landing in a foreign country and immediately having working data...without having to hunt for a local SIM? Priceless. For folks who travel to many foreign destinations for short times, this is perfect.

I agree with your statement that the Tmo roaming works right out of the box, no fiddling. Where I go in the Caribbean, you step off the plane and everything just works (slowly).

[Q] Advise needed on Sim for USA visit

Hi all
Visiting the states next week
LV and LA area for about ten days
need advice on 2 gsm/3g sim cards prepaid
after mainly data prob lots of it and going to make about 4 calls all up
have nexus 5 phones
what you guys use
Thanks in Advance
Anyone?
Ps i live on the other side if the world so have no idea who the providers are
Depends on what you mean by "lots of data".
With pre-paid and a GSM phone, you'll be using an MVNO or subsidiary of either AT&T or T-Mobile. AT&T will give you better overall coverage, but T-Mobile has a strong network in both LA and LV. MetroPCS uses T-Mo's network and you can get a plan with unlimited high-speed (LTE) data for $60. A bit pricey for only 10 days, but you don't have to worry about data caps, throttling, or refilling your "bucket" or card. Plus you can bypass their tethering provisioning and use your data on a laptop without having to worry about finding a hotspot or paying for the hotel's crappy wifi.

A convenience store or airport, probably not. At the airport though, I'd be very surprised if there wasn't at least a kiosk or even an actual store within the airport, or at least very close by.

I honestly don't know how activation would work. I imagine it differs from company to company. From what I gather, activation with MetroPCS when buying a device or signing up for service is free. But if you do it at an "authorized retailer", they might charge a fee. I don't know if they charge for a SIM card or not. Cricket, for example, charges $10 for a SIM, activation in-store is $25, but free if you do it online.
I've traveled and a lot of the major ports offer Sim card kiosks/machines or you can find them in a store at the international terminals
Usually its from carrier mvno mostly that specialize in this type of thing.
