Jelly Bean and paid apps bug; any workarounds? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just flashed randomblame's excellent JELLYTIME ROM on my Inspire. It's working great, but like so many others I've been bitten by the paid app bug in the Play Store encryption process. I'm looking for a work-around, but there doesn't seem to be much out there, or I'm missing it.
As far as widgets go, HD Widgets responded well to the "back up, delete and restore" treatment. But neither of my preferred keyboards (SwiftKey or Thumb Keyboard) will persist after a reboot. I tried the process mentioned above, but keyboard still reverts to stock. I'm using a free version of another keyboard app, and it does persist, but I'd really like to find a better solution.
3 questions:
1. Is there a workaround to get these keyboard apps to persist? I've found nothing, and I'd rather not go through the whole installation process every time I reboot.
2. If not, is there a way to use Tasker to install after reboot? I'm not really knowledgable about Tasker, and this seems to be beyond it's capabilities, but I'm not sure.
3. I've read that Google disabled encryption in the JB Play Store. What does that mean exactly? That apps purchased from JB Play aren't encrypted? If that's the case then they should persist correct? But I have, I think, the JB Play Store, and when I installed SwiftKey from Play, it still doesn't persist. Maybe I don't actually have JB Play. Or maybe Play remembers that my phone was originally Gingerbread and it won't let me install JB apps. I don't know.
Any suggestions?
P.S. Just checked. Along with JELLYTIME I flashed JB gapps zip found in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1796675
Looks like the right one to me. Hmm...
Another P.S. When I search Play Store for Google Wallet on my laptop, it tells me it's not compatible with my phone. So I'm thinking Play doesn't realize I'm running JB. Is there a way to fix this?

[Q] Multiple 3rd party issues.

I just bought my Nook Tablet form BBuy. It's firmware 1.4.0 I installed some 3rd party apps (Aldiko, kindle, amazon store which work fine. However, I have issues with ADW and Launcher Pro, and I can only get some apps to run. I know that is a a common issue, but I would like to delete the apps that do not work and launchers, but I cannot find out how. I have no need for two launchers, so I'd like to delete Launcher pro -because it wont even launch- but I cannot figure out how to do it. Also gmail -which I read all over this site works- does not work, and I would like to delete it as well. It still pops sup in my searches so I know it's installed somewhere. My other issue is launching ADW. The only way I can get it to launch is when I power off the device and it auto launches into it on power up. If I search for any combination of ADW it does not come up in my lists. So if I exit ADW I have no way to get back into it. Any help would be great. I'm just about to throw this thing out a window and just get a Fire instead.
Okay so i'm a noob at the nook tablet myself but i'll try to give you some ideas..
The apps that don't run.. you don't say.. but i can tell you that honeycomb apps probably won't work so you'd need to make sure they are not for that version of android
This thread gives you great apps that work on the nook tablet
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1353040
you should definitely consider loading app Manager to have side loaded apps appear on the nook home screen.. and Button Saviour so you can get to the alternate home screen (launcher pro, go launcher whatever you use..)
There is great info in this forum. and honestly it took me a day of reading but now my nook rocks...
I've been using my nook for almost a week and i can tell you it's a great little tablet for the price.. i bought it after selling my ipad2 and wanted something to use whilst waiting for the ipad3.. i can tell you now.. i'll be keep this nook tablet as it is a great size for reading and covers all my surfing and movie watching needs.. the kindle fire is good but having also owned that for a couple of days before returning.. i can tell you the limited storage space and inferior screen put me off...
Lol. I had read thatbthread at least 4 times and never saw how to delete apps until now. Installed google framework and now my youtube app doesnt work, and gmail still doesnt work.
You need to install NTHiddensettings.apk in order to delete apps from the Nook.
As I mentiined, I figured out how to delete, but does anyone know where the apk.s download to so i can remove, after installing them?
Seriously? No one knows where the apks download to? Also, how in gods name do you get gmail to work side-loaded. All my other questions have been answered per linked thread.
/data/app
And did you root and install gapps? Without that, I don't think you're going to be able to use gmail.

No not rooted. People are claiming successful installation of gmail, google+, and other google services specific apps, but I get the "Unable to establish stable connection" every time I try to side load them.

Are you saying others have side loaded these apps without rooting? I don't think they work without the Google services framework, which you have to root to install.

[Q] Play store after root

I've followed the entire 'root the sony tablet' thing with interest and admiration for those involved. No idea how you did it. And when I can remember my paypal log in I'll send a few GBP to Condi.
And so with a certain nervousness I took the plunge and rooted my UK tablet and installed ICS using Condi's AiO tool. All went very well, tablet working fine.
Anyway I do have a couple of questions, hopefully someone has the answer:
First one, I installed the modded play store app from the AiO tool. It appeared to install, no errors reported. However after reboot it looked exactly the same as before. So should it look different to the UK one?
Second question, I assumed after root I'd be able to remove some of the Sony installed apps. Am I right to think that, is it possible.
Thanks in advance
Don't delete files that only makes your system unstable, but since you have ics you can disable your apps, in settings, but dont disable the question mark app because it will disable other apps too that you want to keep,
You must download Playstation Store from the insternet manually, search XDA forums,
This app is not downloadable for no one at least not from the market,
I don't want to disable any important stuff, I meant things like music umlimited for example. Is it possible to uninstall that sort of app
Not sure what you mean about the Play Store, I ran the modded play store app option from the AiO tool, but it didn't make any difference.
But thanks anyway
Oh sorry xD, I thought you ment the "Playstation" store, but indeed i did that too "Modded version" but that didn't work for me either,
You cannot disable Music unlimited, but yes you can uninstall,
Instal Rom toolbox free, and make a backup from the app, then uninstall that app, if you ever think you want to reinstall it again, then you know that you have a stable version on your own tab also if it gives you issues after deleting the app

Can I stop my phone automatically installing apps?

Got a no mark S4 clone on 4.2, perfectly happy with it, got CWM and a new rom on it, its fine.
I have exposed and boot manager and once a day it has its icon telling me 'google play services' has auto installed, and every other day an app called 'recents' with a sort of C:\ terminal icon. Now, neither of these I want, I've deleted them so, SO many times, selected 'dont auto update' and also 'dont notify' from within google play, set my firewall to block anything google when on 4g etc...
Is there ANY way to stop it installing stuff I dont need?

The only way is to build a new aosp rom for your device. My advise is remember that you get what you pay for and clones never really have any of the hardware they claim they do. I think you will find you are better off ditching the device and buying a new one.

That doesnt actually help me at all.
The phone is fine, no issue with it. Has a new rom on it, specs were as described, its a problem with google, and the play store auto installing, it did this on my old S2 and my galaxy tab stock, so its not the hardware.
There must be a way to stop the play store doing this apart from uninstalling the play store as I am currently doing.

Then that will lead me to think it is one of the apps you have installed. Some shady apps like CCleaner will install other apps. I would wipe the device completely and then install your apps one by one until you find the issue.

hmmm. I will try then, my tab is stock with different apps than my phones, and my phones only share a few similar ones as one is work, one home etc...
I shall keep searching for an answer, Ta.

"Search for something on @string/app_name"

I recently rooted (then un-rooted, long story) my Nexus 5x. After restoring my phone, I've noticed that if I do OK Google while in some apps, there's a message in the popup that says "search for something on (at sign)string/app_name" which seems to be a place holder for the actual app name. I never noticed this before restoring my phone. I attempted to reinstall the Google app but the issue persists.
Has anyone else seen this before? Any clues on how to fix it? Not really a huge issue, but it really bugs me.
If this is the wrong forum please let me know.
sounds like a bug in the app (typo in the code), as the "@" isn't used when referencing a string resource like that from Java.
can you post a screenshot? try updating to the latest version of the Google app and/or Google Play Services?
I just noticed this happen on my phone as well. I'm running Android 6.0 and updated the Play Store today. It seems to be an actual feature where you can search for a word on an installed app. E.g. fish on Facebook, cars or Pinterest. I tried this and it worked on a few apps but not everything. If this is actually a new feature and I'm not just confused that could explain the bugs. Since this happened to you a while back, maybe it was unlocked during root, kind of like the split screen Easter egg on 6.0?

Question Why are there separate google apps on these phones?

Google Lens is already on the phone, but there's still the Google Lens app in the store that you can install. There's also GPay already on the phone, but some apps tell me to install Google Pay from the store.
Why? Does having double the apps screw with anything in the long run?
Maybe updates? I would go with the factory load versions unless they don't work well.
For Gpay, the one on the phone is the old version. They are pushing everyone to upgrade to the new version, that is the one in the store.
I don't use Gpay. The worst that will likely to happen if you don't upgrade is eventually it will stop working. You could get into issues with Playstore which demands updating. Playstore is so on my bad side, I rarely use it anymore.
I use the factory load versions for most of the Google apps especially Gmail and Gmaps as the update's UI's* sucked. Some of the Google system apps are factory load too because the update caused issues like excessive battery consumption*. So it is after 2 years, current load is over 1.5 yo, still fast, stable and user friendly.
You should experiment to see what works best for you. Just be aware that updates (especially firmware) can break just as easily as they can fix devices.
*Samsung seems to modify these and many times the factory load version works best. Or perhaps it's just the oldest version before Google screwed them up more
I installed the Google Assistant app just so I could add it as an icon to my home screen in Nova Launcher.
It's for people who root and want specific apps installed without installing the background/integration stuff.
