Extremely short battery life(few hours) and unstable WIFI - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys,
Not sure what could be the issue. I'm quite a veteran when it comes to troubleshooting these phones and flashing, etc. I've been a power user since the S1 and S2.
I flashed CM9 a few weeks ago, one of the stables and it was all running fine. One day I picked up the phone after charging overnight and it was really hot, the battery drained in about an hour or so, the whole time it was extremely hot.
I flashed a few other CM roms, which didn't fix much, tried full wipes and everything.
I've now gone back to an original samsung rom which I flashed via odin. This seems to have fixed the overheating issue, however, my battery barely lasts more than 3 hours on full charge and this is with absolutely minimal use (few phone calls).
WiFI is also extremely unstable. It takes a while to connect to any network, and when it does, it'll drop after a few minutes. I've tried different networks.
Scanning for WIFI networks works fine, so does this rule out a faulty WIFI chip?
I'm thinking the battery drain may be related to the WIFI card.
I've also tried a new battery.
Any suggestions, or is the phone fried?

A number of posts saying the same .

No, to get up your hopes, the phone isn't dead, yet.
Try flahsing a ROM, other than CM. I have the same problem, with AOSP, that's why I stick to sammy based ROMs, AOSP is made for the device, but Google only tunes it up to their standards, when it has something to do with their Nexus devices.
I'd say: Try a different ROM, don't overclock it. If that doesn't work, flash stock and then try it. One of the two should work, though!

I've gone back to a stock Samsung 4.0.1 rom. Flahed using odin, yet still the same issue with battery life and WIFI.
I've heard somewhere that flashing CM9 can cause WIFI issues, and there's a specific flash procedure to get it working normal again?

There is no 4.0.1 for the S3. I'm just sayin'.

Fascinate CM7 standby battery drain

So i have a verizon fascinate and am currently running cm7. (first tried the stable release but niw a nightly). Im eeally liking cm, but since i got it my battery life is garbage. Basically the drain seems to come from either the android os sercice or cell standby. Whenever i leave my phone inactive for a while, when i wake it up the battery has dropped a lot and tge phone is very warm. I have been modding this phone for a while, but im no android programmer. Purely based on the forum searchi. G ive done on the issue, it seemsblike cm7 has an issue with my modem or radio.
Extra info: my 3g/2g signals seem fine (always 0% time without signal). Wifi connectivity seems fine. Im also running glitch's kernal altho the problem has persisted with and without it (i did do a kernel cleaning first). I used the "go from anything to jb vanilla" guide cuz i was having issues switching to mtd at first (sry dont have a link rite now but it was on xda) . I get occassional force closes, but not really a problem. When i did a titanium back up, the very first time i flashed cm7 i Did restore system settings, but i did not do that every time since then. Ive done a fresh flash of the stable mod around 3 times trying different stuff, but this one is niggtly as i said, and each has had this issue.
If looked around a lot, and wgile this seems common, no one has posted a consistent solution or explanation to the problem, so thats what im looking for.

You could flash jt's vanilla gb rom. That has good battery life.

I have had the standby battery drain on every CM7 version and Kernel tried so far including 7.1 stable,7.0 nightlies,JT's Vanilla, and PoolParty. It's even worse if I shut phone down and don't plug in. It will drop 50 to 75% overnight with phone not on?
Has done it with undervolting, overclocking, and voltage control not even installed. This is first time I have seen others having similiar issues.
I think this is a known issue for all MTD roms on the fascinate, if I'm not mistaken.

I lose only 5% to 10% overnight on CM7 never really notice how much on MIUI cause I never ran it long enough. I guess every phone would behave differently for MTD's or maybe you have an app or mulitple ones that refreshes frequently(Fancy Widget comes to mind).
Well that really sucks, because i do enjoy cm7. But this also means if i go back to a touchwiz configuration like stock dl09 i shouldnt have these issues right?
But before that, has anyone who had these issues tried anything (ie kernels or maybe standby mode power conservation setting, etc... ) that have at least noticeably improved your battery life? Right now mines pretty unbearable (im talking 8hrs while on but totally inactive), but if i can get it up a little i might b able to manage.

I am also experiencing poor battery life. I just flashed 7.1.0 yesterday and absolutely love it. Was using com rom for a few months, but a friend said to try out cwm 7. I used to get about 6 - 8 hours of Pandora while at work and today I only got about 4 before my phone shut off. I'm going to try completely killing battery and charge with phone off tonight an see if it's any better tomorrow.
Any other suggestions? I'm not a noob when it comes to custom roms and flashing (I used to flash the **** out of my G1) but there may have been something I over looked when switching to cwm7. I wiped everything a few times before flashing including battery stats and dalvic.
My battery life is actually really good. Running latest nighty, undervolted -75 across the board, stock kernel, and no overclocking.
Just can't figure why I lose 50-75% of battery overnight when phone is shut down and not charging?
I have the same issue with CM7.1, turning phone of at 80% battery at night to find it at 25% at morning
Is there knows solution?

From what I've heard, it's usually improved - BUT some power management bugs that affected stock Gingerbread kernels but were fixed in all custom kernels are still present in ICS, such as the good old fuel_alerted wakelock - so while it's better when working well, it's more prone to breaking.
I'm happy if my battery lasts for a day as i'm always messing with it(one of these days I might use it to make a phone call)! Have you tried putting it on charge at bedtime? I find that helps a lot.

I would try to avoid over-charging it, it's not good for any battery. Once it hits 100% (so long as it's correctly calibrated) unplug and use as normal.

I noticed ram usage has increased as well as the amount of system processes. both times I rooted and removed bloatware. when my contract runs out in 6 months I will be looking at either a pure asop phone or an iphone 5, The galaxy s2 has a great screen but the batterylife if weak no matter what custom rom and custom kernal is running. Also I can get a wifi signal in my bedroom with my laptop and my old iphone 3gs but nothing with the s2.
Also please can anyone advise what the best pure and minimilistic asop rom will be for the galaxy s2 ive read cm9 mite be soon but is there anything thats great for battery life ? ...... thanks for you time in advance :=)

did u manage to fix the problem is "exchange something that can be removed ?
Upgrading to custom ICS roms is usually a great way to enhance your battery life, because they're always containing tweaks and optimizations!
This worked for me
Device: GT-I9100 (Samsung Galaxy S2 international)
Carrier: Smartone
Country / Language: Hong Kong
OS / Browser / build number (if applicable): ICS 4.0.3/IML74K.ZSLPE
I can confirm that I have resolved the battery drain issue after upgrading to ICS on my device. The problem was partial wake locks caused by the exchange service.
One of these measures fixed the problem for me (it might have been any of these, although I have a strong suspicion that the factory reset is the only relevant one):
- factory reset of phone; didn't restore the settings and accounts, but set them up manually
- wiped cache
- did not reinstall ADW launcher
Hope that helps.
The good news is that now the battery life is definitely better than it was on Gingerbread.

This isn't really true. Once it hits 100% it pretty much runs off the charger.
By depleting it all the time you are ruining the battery that way

Leaving your phone on charge longer than is absolutely necessary ie taking it off charge as soon as it gets to 100% will not affect your battery life and there is also no need to manually calibrate the battery. I installed DXLP7 and was getting poor battery life due to a wakelock, I found and dealt with the cause and immediately battery life improved. In my experience battery life on ICS is as good as it was in gingerbread. Better battery stats is your friend.

I had upgraded my sgs2 to ics yesterday. The new version is draining the battery very seriously. In the previous version, my sgs2 could last for about 12 hours from a fully charged state. But now the version can only last for 6 hours, which is really unacceptable.
Is deep sleep? You can check with CPU-Spy. If not, remove the battery a few minutes and then returned.

I had huge battery drain issues from exchange and email waking the device and constantly doing something. Removed the accounts and then set them up again. Like night and day now, better than gb. On LP7 and never wiped.

Keep a look with BetterBatteryStats, and see if there are any apps messing up.
I have better batterylife with ICS by a margin.
And about leaving the charger on during night, these are kind of myths really, you can keep it on without any worries, and also charge it without being totally drained.
Most of these thoughts come from the old Ni-Cd times with memory effect.
I had removed the Exchange Account yesterday and the battery drain problem disappeared. The account was added back after about 10 hours. The battery usage is now back to normal (a little bit better than the situation before the ics upgarde). Thanks for your hint.
Cheers.
SG S2 ICS Battery drain issue
Had upgraded to ICS when it launched in India and literally went berserk due to the battery drain issue. Googled and googled, found a lot of things, tried most of them (except for changing ROMs).
Then, Voila, last 4 days - a complete twist to my sorry tale. I first disabled the phone backup option (to Google), did a factory reset, said No to most of the options that are asked on restart, and didnt install the earlier applications from the Play store en masse (earlier, had a number of games and other 'what I thought was useful' apps). Now, only have the basic apps plus Poweramp, Shazam and NQ Mobile added. And the result - the battery is back to normal. Phew....big relief as I use the phone pretty much for mails, music, phone.
I want yo add some thing very annoying, I discovered today after upgrading to Resurrection ROM.
In fact, even with the device connected to my car power supply and using Copilot for about 1 hour, the battery continued it's discharge instead of charging.
So what to say and what to do?
Cheers

[Q] Any custom rom makes galaxy s2 BBQ Grill-Heat

Hello all,
I've been experimenting with custom roms lately. First I tried resurrection since it got lotsa attention and then I tried sensation, all causing the same problem.
I was lucky to have a NAND backup so I quickly went back to my stock rom. But now I am wondering why are these roms causing heating problems but not the stock rom? Interestingly, many people are using them without any complaints.
I thought this might be a problem with my phone. I contacted amazon and asked for a replacement, they were nice to replace the product even after 3 months! (kudos to them).
But now I'm wondering if this will solve my problem. Moreover, I sometimes had heating while charging the phone, bolstering my thesis that the phone is faulty. Any ideas anyone?
you returned your phone for no reason!
If it works fine on stock, phone is fine.
Learn how to use custom roms, read how to flash each Rom in their thread.
Basically, modem and kernel are related to heat. Plus one needs to wipe his/her phone completely at least once before going to custom.

Lol calm down! I've not returned it, I am going to replace it. I've had heating problems with stock rom as well, especially while charging. I've changed the battery, thinking the problem was the battery but it didn't help at all. Also today, after being back to stock rom, it still heats up even with simple tasks. So I assume there is some kind of fault.
It's normal for your phone to heat up. If it heats up its perfectly normal because the cores are working fine. If u got battery heating warnings or any other phone heating warning thats the problem and you should investigate =D

[Q] Battery use higher since 4.1.2.. but why? (stock)

When I got my SGS3, I could have it on for about 2 days (with minimal use and bluetooth and gps off and such), but ever since I updated to 4.1.2 (from ICS to JB), it looks like the battery drains a lot faster. So I got Titanium Backup and removed most of Samsung's' bloatware, disabled Google now and finally got BetterBatteryStats to pinpoint the source. I found some minor things and disabled them too... I've optimized all settings across the board, yet I still can't get much longer than one day.
Now I get that one day is nice, and most people charge every day, but when you're used to having 2 days (or at least 1.5 on normal use), 1 day is just.. less
So, I am kind of hoping that someone with more knowledge than me (basically everyone here ) would have a look at my BBS dump file, because I'm kind of at a loss.
It would be much appreciated!

Do you mean "Location determined by wi-fi and/or mobile networks"? Isn't that used (among other things) to find the GPS sattelites way faster (because if it knows where you are, it knows where the sattelites are)? Because I use my phone for car navigation, I really would prefer not to wait 5 minutes while my phone searches the sky for GPS...
I'll turn the option off for now, but do you really think that's the main problem? Because I had the option on before this update.
Still, thank you for your suggestion
Location by wifi is unrelated to GPS location, it's just a way of roughly fixing your location by the networks and wifi around you.
It's a battery hog and doesn't matter AGPS, which is used to speed up GPS fixes but gets downloaded via your data connection.
I found JB to be better for battery life that ICS, even on a stock ROM. Since changing to a minimumcustom ROM based on the latest stock I get two days use with around 6hr screen on time.
If you are still on stock that was updated from ICS then you might be better off wiping the phone and flashing a fresh install, even if you only use the stock JB ROM for your country, as things might have become corrupted over time.

I think your issue is fast dormancy as you have the secril_fd wakelock.
There is an app on playstore that can toggle fast dormancy on or off on the Galaxy S3.

Ok, I've installed it and turned FD off... I'll do a full charge now and see how long that keeps. Thanks for your suggestion! Is FD a new feature since JB? Because I haven't changed providers so if this has always been the case, it's probably still a seperate problem.
To be completely sure, I'd still like to do the complete reinstall, so I would really appreciate it if someone would point me in the direction of official updated stock roms. Thanks!

You can reset it completely through Kies if you go to Tools>Firmware Upgrade and Installation and follow the instructions this will flash the latest firmware and reset your phone, do any backups you need first like contacts etc, then root the phone again or do whatever you want afterwards.
FD is not new. It just depends whether you provider supports it or not. If it is not supported and switched on it can cause battery drain.
Saying that my network does support it but when I first upgraded to XELLA I started getting the secril_fd wakelock. Switching off FD solved it at the time. Since then I have made a few changes, including modem and have switched it back on again without issue.
I noticed you've also got the Multipdp wakelock. A modem change sorted that one for me.
As I say I've since moved back to XELLA without issue and neither wakelock has returned.

I've found all the JB ROMs that I've tried to consume alot more battery than ICS, with the same set of apps running and the same location/sync settings. I eventually reverted to CheckROM 3.5 (ICS) to get decent battery life again.

Ok, thanks for the info. I don't think that's my problem though: my provider hasn't changed, the only thing that changed is that I upgraded to JB. Either way, I tested it: with FD off I still have pretty much the same result (maybe a bit better, but I need to properly test that. Yet it's definitely not the problem ). Too bad, it was a good suggestion.

overnight it lost 25% in 11h42m, so I'd say that's a definite improvement. It didn't see any use in this time, but it should last me at least 1.5 day now, so I guess the problem was in the update after all. The battery of my (6 months newer) SGS3 still holds out longer, but I think that's the battery itself: hers also charges faster than mine.
Thank you all, for helping to think up solutions and get it working for me again! :victory:
Edit: Multipdp is now a lot higer up in the list (it's the top partial wakelock), maybe I should change modems. Can someone tell me how?

[Q] Save my Thunderbolt from me!

I need some help. I want to make all of the pain go away and send this POS out the window of my vehicle. It has been a cause of so much frustration over the last year.
Most recently, I installed Santods excellent official ICS deodexed debloated ROM. I didn't notice the issue I'm having now before I installed that ROM, but I have since installed another ROM (Jellyblur) and my issue has not disappeared. It started when I was using my camera... i noticed a long delay after I impatiently hit a button while it was thinking. it shutdown. upon restarting, battery went from fully charged to maybe 20%. A couple pictures later and it shutdown again and upon restarting showed maybe 3%. It's not just the camera that causes it... GPS, browsing, calls etc. can all trigger this behavior. After showing a battery level of 3%, I plug it in and it is instantaneously at 65% or 72% etc., but never showing that its in need of a full recharge.
Is there a chance I screwed up something that "tells" the battery it's time to shutdown? Here are some logs from the most recent episode.

Pretty ironic seeing as the phones name is 'Thunderbolt'.

Like it was said you have a bad battery. Get a new one and all will be good again

Here's why I am still reluctant to believe it's the battery.
1. I was getting a full day of normal use out of it the day before I installed the new ROM.
2. After achieving a total drain of the battery, upon plugging back in , it shows the charge is already at + 50%.
disclaimer: I have no prior experience with owning a smart phone and dealing with batteries, so I have no idea how they are supposed to act. Limited experience flashing ROMS and no real knowledge of common problems that can occur when flashing etc. etc.

2 Things to consider. The rezound battery is all that is available atm and it is rated at 1640mah vs our 1400 mah.
A new battery is usually not more than 20 dollars
If you are having these problems ensure you are following the suggested directions.
Install ICS Radios
4ext Recovery
Wipe all except sd card
install rom
I have returned to GB rom and i stay on the ICS Radios with 0 problems. So no matter what rom you install i would suggest the new ICS radios. I have installed the new radios in 3 other phones besides my own with 0 problems crossing ICS radio with GB ROM.

Same here, ICS radios and currently using a GB ROM (Jellyblur) with great success... (phone shutting down and battery insta-drain aside).

I will mail you a thunderbolt battery I have left over when I owned one. So you pm me your address and I will mail it free of charge. That's how sure I know its your battery. What you have to lose? If its not the battery then you got an extra battery.
