I'm trying to get into making apps, and i've got everything setup in Eclipse, the SDK, etc etc and i've succesfully compiled a HelloWorld app (simple, i know )
But i'm not much of a Java coder, only just started C and C++ in school, so i'm looking for some projects that i can import into Eclipse and see how they're made and take a look at their source code and perhaps use some of it.
Anyone know how? I'd be very glad if it was possible to both get examples of simple apps and perhaps some more extensive ones
I tried decompiling an app with APK Tool and i can't make heads or tails of the smali files and all that..

Anyone?

Have you tried File -> New -> Project -> Android Sample Project in Eclipse ?

I was trying to use the visual layout editor and it says "LayoutLib is too recent. Update your tool!" What does that mean?
I'm not 100% certain but it sounds like the visual editor is attempting to do something that your version of Eclipse doesn't support. The visual layout editor should be part of the ADT plugin for Eclipse. I think your version of Eclipse might be backlevel or something? What version are you running? You'll probably need one of the recent releases like Helios or Indigo.
If you have a newer release of Eclipse then you probably need to ask the Google folks that create the ADT plugin what on earth that means...
I had yo update my ADT to 12 (or something like that) so that the visual editor would work with the updated sdk.
need to know waht eclipse version u have because some oldest versions rent supported anymore , other thing u need to update ur adt then , go to help then choose updatesoftware then a new small window will appears , choose add then add this link:
https://dl-ssl.google.com/android/eclipse/
if ur problem persist , send me a pm
Hey, brayann16k, this worked for me! I tried the update function and a few other things I found on the web, but this one worked! Thanks a lot, I'm very new to developing for Android and the visual editor will be of great help finding some important relations and understanding the layout xml structure.

One thing to consider when developing is that xml defines the layout, and java determines what each of the elements (buttons, images, etc.) does. Look up thenewboston android tutorials on youtube. Theres 200+ videos and he covers every topic imaginable
Hello everyone I would like to TRY to take a dive into theming, maybe even starting as small as theming apps. But I would like to know what tools are needed to do so? I'm running windows 7, and already have Java, SDK, etc... I thought that some current tools won't work or have issues when theming ICS stuff... Any input would be helpful! Thanks
Hi.
I'm a java developer who wants to start to develop and learn cyanongenMod and AOSP. Start by saying that I have a good knowledge of Java and Android development but little knowledge of programming and debugging in C / C ++
I have readed all the documents from AOSP sites and following the guide found on source.android.com.I was able to setup Eclipse for all the Java applications
Pros: I can study the whole Java nature of Android and Cyanogenmod, using eclipse as a "code browser"
Cons; unable to edit the layout.xml (for example) and unable to use the Android feature of an eclipse project
It could be nice for Java developing, but for the others projects and OS parts there isn't a "IDE setup guide". I am a little bit confused about how the general development workflow goes. The build procedures for every device found at CM wiki are great but...after that?
How to develop, modify and debug a single Java Application on a real device?
How to develop, modify and debug a c/c++ driver or patch for a real device?
If I want to work only on a single Java application, I can't import it in Eclipse. If I want to debug on a real device (for example, the photosphere feature in Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 does not work), I can't setup a debug environment.
Where I can find a good guide-site-tutorial ?
I use this link whenever I get a new computer etc. This not only explains what to do but has all the download links and more. Good luck!

My question is not about developing android application, but about developing android operating system. I find a lot of articles on makeuseof.org about installing cyanogenmod, for example. But no articles about developing cyanogenmod

Sorry but I think that is impossible that no CyanogenMod dev reads XDA forum.
If a noob want to find guide and tutorial and start develop for AOSP o CyanogenMod, where he can ask for help?
Ask from a dev in free xperia project. They develop cyanogenmod
Hello,
I want to develop an app for the Android OS but I am a total newbie and need some advice to get started.
What I want to do is study and add some extra features to the existing Android Open Source Project Contacts Manager (found in github: github.com/android/platform_packages_apps_contacts/tree/jb-release). I figured that reinventing the wheel is a bit stupid. I tried downloading the source code and creating a new android project from existing code in Eclipse. Unfortunately the code is full of references to classes that aren't there. I don't understand how this is possible when everything seems to be in order, the Google APIs are there including Android.jar.
Obviously I am doing something wrong or I have missed something, or maybe I am doing this totally wrong. Thanks in advance.
Ok so i'm planning on building my own rom for the rez to continue developement, I have many tools setup such as Cygwin, Android Kitchen, SDK, JDK, APKTool, Baksmali and Smali. I also have an ubuntu based linux setup that i rebuilt and recoded myself. I do know alot of coding and how to decompile / recompile apks so far. If any Devs can shoot me a message on any tips or anything else ill need i greatly appreciate it. Also i dont know how updated things need to be for 4.3 development on the rez as i've been learning on how to go about doing this since gingerbread. Thanks
Only one other thing I can think of; GIMP or Photoshop if you're planning on doing any kind of themeing.
Here's a link to free Photoshop CS2:
https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/entitlement/index.cfm?pid=4485850&e=cs2_download
Will need to login/create an account.
Yea I have all that to and making themes already....so I'm all set with what I need for ROM making then
