[Q] SD card folder structure? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

When I got my Notea few months ago I installed the SD card from my Streak into it, without reformatting as I was short on time. Now that I have a moment I reformatted that card so could get rid of the Streak data and gain some space.
Does the Note create the file structure that it wants as I use it or should I recreate folders in whatever structure I want? Previously I had media, music, video...etc folders; created by the Streak I guess I am asking if whatever folders I create have an impact on the device or will it just find whatever I put in there?
The Note created a Lost.dir folder immediately, as well as DCIM. In addition I now have a external_sd folder on the card with another DCIM folder inside.

The rom will create the file structure...
Additionally ....some apps will use the space as well ...
It is known as the EMMC partition ...g

Thanks!
I forgot to mention that I am on stock AT&T ICS. Not rooted or anything (yet). I assume that doesn't matter in this issue? The Streak was on a bunch of ROMs over the year or so I had it but I never looked to see if any had an impact on the SD structure.

Nope...no impact at all..
And just FYI...
You do not need root to flash custom roms...only the custom recovery....It can be found in the note everything thread, at the top of the general section...g

Let's start with what exactly you did that resulted in you losing the pictures in the first place.
do you see a bunch of items in the lost.dir directory?
If so, then try opening some of the smaller ones with an image editing program. You never know... it might still open them. If that's the case then all you need to do is rename them with the proper extensions. Worth a try.
I lost over 600 image files myself for no apparent reason.
A google search quickly told me this was a "known android issue", but no effing idea why...
For me it want just camera images but ALL images on the sd card.

This is why flashing experimental/custom roms is often a process that will teach you to back up your stuff. Sometimes this lesson is learned the hard way....
You can try to mount the partition in Windows or MacOS and throw file recovery software at it, Recuva being one of the better free ones for Windows. Best of luck
lost.dir is a filesystem folder, (kinda like if you realy explore and ntfs drive, you'll find a SystemVolume folder, and a few other ones).
Your pictures aren't in the lost.dir folder. And you're probably one of the ones who had their internal SD wiped while using the dead horse kernel. Sorry to say, but there's no way to get them back.

@murdamo305:
Exactly. So as another use has already suggested...BACKUP! Both Titanium and MyBackup are available freely from the Market. Android bug or not with a working backup handy you don't lose anything.
Here's your situation:
You = lost information, want it back.
Problem = the way sdcards store info + the filesystem = pretty much impossible to recover usable info from your sdcard (specially since it has been written to again, no matter what you think). Sorry to say, but you're SOL.
lost.dir is a filesystem maintenance folder, pretty much exclusively for OSX use. It's not a "trashcan" or anything like that. It's not user accessible.
Besides, that kernel doesn't have code in it that says "move everything to lost.dir". It's got a bug in it that essentially runs a remove recursively and forced on the /sdcard/ directory.
Do a "check disk". It worked for me when i corrupted my memory card.

can we delete it? there's nothing in it at all for me
you can delete it, but the android system will create it again.
I dont appreciate some of your assumptions
Just to automatically assume someone has their phone rooted and or flashed right off the rip is stupid. My fiancée just came to me telling me all her music on her SD Card was gone. Windows says the memory is still occupied however I found all the music files renamed to digit only filenames with no file extensions in the Lost.Dir. I renamed one to Test.Mp3 and opened it. Kabam it played a 3 and a half minute song. So to tell someone that welp your files are gone sorry nothing you can do this is what you get for doing something that they might not even have done in the first place. Her phone is stock no mods, no roms no tweaks. It is a rare occurance that happens in the Android OS. Not a direct result of what someone might have been doing.

100% agree with you, i also suddenly lost my pictures from my ext sd card, i founded the lost.dir with the files i just rename with the JPG extension and the pictures come back to life.
For everyone that append the same, don't lost your hope, you DON'T loose your files rename with the correct extension and you'll recover the lost file.

[Q] Sd Card Almost Maxed Out

So, I was looking at my SD Card info through settings and I only have 2.43gb free. I only have 7 songs, not many photos, videos or anything else. I went through my SD and cleaned it up, but nothing changed.
I am running SC 2.5v no theme, and nothing really on my SD card for roms, themes or anything like that. I know this is a stretch, but what could be taking so much memory on the SD. I don't have titanium, i have cleaned my back ups and don't back up my apps... I know. Crazy. Anyone have any ideas. I know you don't know what is on my SD but, anyone have this issue as well?

Mount the SD card on your computer and then select all the files in explorer (turn on show system files and hidden files first!), and check their total size (size and size on disk). If the size on disk for all the files is far lower than the amount reported as being used for the volume, something odd is probably up.
If the 'size on disk' is actually about the same as the amount of used space on the volume, you can then start checking the folders/files to see what's taking up the space.
@Jason Black: Why'd you want to repartition it? Or did you mean reformat it?
Another thing you could do is look for hidden files on windows when u open up removable drive then on the upper the upper left hand side hit tools then view then scroll down and hit the bubble that says show hidden files and see if thats what's taking up space

Do you use ROM Manager, or have you used it? Also, do you have/use Titanium backup to create backups or have you done any nandroid backups in CWM? Also, if you download things on your phone, that would be another thing to check and clear out.

Yeah you can try clearing download cache in rom manager and also, those nanbackups take up a good amount of space if you have a lot of apps and data. I also have 2.40g left. Thats a lot of space unless you are downloading movies lol.

I recently had that issue and went through my sd card and deleted unnecessary files. Old Roms such as superclean 2.1-2.3 I found in multiple places each taking up about 150MB. The main culprit was the nandroid backups. I had 4 backups each took up about a gig. They were in the clockwork mod folder. Im now limiting myself to 1 backup at a time.

I had a lot of lost space on my card a while back. I suspect from removing the card/inserting the card while still mounted and losing clusters.
I simply put the card in my PC. Backed it up to my hard disk (hidden files and all). Formatted the card. Copied the files back. This restored the lost space. (and gave me a backup too which is handy)
Thanks everyone for the replies. I only have 3 nandroid back ups so far. I have rom manager, but the one adrynalyne posted with fix permissions. I have titanium, but dont use it.
I will mount my SD card to my comp and take a look at it. See if I can find hidden files.
Ok. I figures it out. I use a PC for rooting purpose stuff, but put a bunch of files on my SD card from a mac. Well I found out that when you delete files on your sd card from a mac.
It creats a hidden folder call .trash where it stores everything you delete. I used stock "My Files" hit menu when open, click more, setting then select show hidden files. You can delete all .trash or whatever .(folder) there. That is the hidden files mac create.
I hope this can help someone. Once i deleted those folders, I wernt from 1.8gb to 12.58 gb.

Macs also create other dot files when coping data, including a dot file for every file you copy over (it's to store the file's metadata... that's really not useful), as well as some others. Some poster around here has a link in his sig with a 'guide' on disabling those things...
In my /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup folder i have 9 backups. I'm guessing I might want to keep the oldest one in case it has a backup of my stock phone (I'm rooted now) and the latest one. The rest can be deleted, right?

TBH I haven't made a back-up since december 2010 and have deleted all mine long ago. With odin/TiBkup I find it to be an error free process. Restores always seem to have their own issues so I just gave up on them. But yes you can delete all older ones and keep the most current.
good day.
^^ same here. Haven't done a nandroid since November. Nandroid backups are a pain. It only takes like 10 minutes to get all your settings back the way you want them after a good ol' clean odin. Plus titanium backup, of course

Agreed. Delete all your old backups. I had about 10 on mine at one pint. They eat about 1gb each
I've been KANGBANGED!!!!!
I've done a Nandroid restore a couple of times now and it went smoothly. A couple of cache and Dcache clears before, wipe data, clear caches again, install ROM, clear caches a couple of times, boot to make sure the ROM functions, then recovery, cache clearing, then advanced restore and restoring just data works for me. I used to use TiBu to restore everything but this has been working out fine, although I'd heard some people had problems with it. Although now that I think about it, I've only done this when re-flashing the same ROM as before. Maybe with different ROMS some things don't play nicely.
Still, I don't need 9 backups just sitting there taking up space, so thanks for the go ahead on deleting them. And I still do TiBu and MyBu backups because I've found you can never have too many resources when things go bad!

According to me , you have the hidden files and folder disabled on your PC. So enable it, the from your old sdcard(8gb) copy a folder named ".android_secure" and put it in 16GB, then check again if that worked.

Thanks for reply, will try this..
If you do that you may be subjected to random freezes, lockups, etc. Not saying this for a 100% but usually that's the case. When you install apps and run them certain apps place folders on your sd card that are linked to the app. Also if you move apps to your sd VIA program/mod they are stored in the android_secure folder located on your sd card. When you format, move, alter, etc the folder from the sd or alter the contents inside of the .android_secure folder you remove/break the links, and just dropping the folder back on the SD will work but in most cases it dosent restore the links correctly from my understanding. IMO your best bet is to just uninstall the apps you had moved to your sd and then reinstall them. Also for future reference don't move or alter the
.android_secure folder folder if you have a nandroid that has some of the apps you installed moved to the sd. This is just my understanding. Hope this helps

[Q] what folder to put new ringtones into???

Regarding Android Jelly Bean version and my Verizon S4 (sch-i545)...
I know that the native folder location for ringtones, alerts, and notifications is at /system/media/audio
But, where can I create a folder on the sdcard (or ext_sdcard) to add my own ringtones?
I've created and moved mp3's into the following folder structures, rebooted and still don't see them when I try to add new ringtones:
\sdcard\media\audio\ringtones
\sdcard\media\ringtones
\sdcard\ringtones
None of the 3 above folder structures work. Anyone have an idea or do I have to move mp3 files into the /system location?
The stock ringtones are in /system/media/audio/ringtones ... I've been putting my files there but you need root explorer
\mnt\extSdCard\Alarms
\mnt\extSdCard\Notifications
\mnt\extSdCard\Ringtones
Those are 3 folders that work off of the external SD Card. Obviously if you're just looking for a place for a ringtone and don't care about alarms or notifications then just disregard the first 2.
I prefer the external SD Card so that my custom sounds can be carried over between ROM installations without a backup.

So I discovered what you responded above at the same time.
My problem was that I kept looking at the extSdCard as an external SD card. Therefore I was trying everything at the \mnt\sdcard level
When I finally stumbled onto the fact that if I put the files in the respective folders on the folder structure you listed above, then it works.
Again, my confusion is that I thought everthing needed to be placed at the root of scard.
Seems weird to me but I think the S4 looks at the external SD card as "sd card"

I think that TW on the S4 does something funky with what it calls sdcard where it's actually an emulated partition rather than a true file path like on other phones or variations of Android. Whenever you pull up default storage locations of app data and the like, it always shows up as something like: /storage/emulated/0...
For me, extSdCard is definitely my 64GB SD card that I put in myself. Maybe someone more knowledgeable can take it from here. This is my first Android phone from Samsung, and by extension my first experience with TW.
I noticed the same thing (storage/emulated/0/ ) confused the crap out of me at first. I would download files and had no idea where they ended up.

Yeah, I've been trying to research the SDcard vs. ExtSDcard differences. It seems to me like it's different from what I remember. I'd also appreciate any insight anyone has on this. I totally am not (yet) getting the emulated partition. When I go hunt for stuff, I use root explorer to go to \mnt\sdcard and don't start with the emulated partition. There doesn't seem to be much explanation out there so far as I can tell.

[Q] /emulated/0 and /emulated/legacy

Alright, so I was kinda flipping between ROMs, Hyperdrive, Bonestock, Beanstown, and even a couple of AOSP ROMs. After all that flashing I realized I had a bunch of crap on my internal memory that I didnt need or want in there, so without even thinking about researching it before doing it I booted into recovery (TWRP) and formatted my internal memory.
Oops.
So, since then I have applied the one click return to stock that odins a stock MDK image. I applied the stock MDK recovery. I booted into the stock recovery and wiped and factory reset everything besides doing the reset and delete everything from the settings menu.
Maybe its just me not paying attention but I am noticing something after starting fresh that I dont remember noticing before.
I have moved pictures from my External Memory card back to my internal memory card and I the files show up in two places, /storage/emulated/0 and /storage/emulated/legacy... My pictures in Gallery are also showing up as in two places, even after restoring back to stock mdk, stock recovery, wiping everything, etc. Is this normal? Is it just something that I missed and didnt pay attention to beforehand? I dont remember the internal memory being like this prior to my attempt to format it in TWRP but hey, what do I know... It doesnt look like the files are being duplicated it looks like its a system thing that shows two different locations that are actually the same lcoation but really, I'm too stupid to know better. Is there a way for gallery not to show the same files twice since it doesnt look like the files are actually duplicated but just maybe some sort of internal link from the folders showing two seperate locations?
If I am wanting to restore files from my ext card that I backed up should they be put in /0 or /legacy or does it even matter?
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!
I'm pretty sure they are the same thing. I've noticed something similar on my phone.
/0 folder was created when we went to Android 4.2 (becuase of the ability to have user profiles) So system need a way to install apps on a per user basias.
The /legacy is for olders apps that are still written for Android 4.1.2 and below.
I hope I got that right. lol

They are symbolic links that directory. As a result, they take up next to no space. Deleting them would be inviting trouble for, quite literally, no benefit.
Do not delete either one. I did that on my Galaxy nexus and deleted all my files they are linked together somehow

/0 folder was created when we went to Android 4.2 (becuase of the ability to have user profiles) So system need a way to install apps on a per user basias.
The /legacy is for olders apps that are still written for Android 4.1.2 and below.
I hope I got that right. lol

This is correct. They are simply symbolic links pointing to the same directory. No worries.
same issue but doubleing the space used on internal memory
So I have the legacy and 0 folders same size same files. The problem is I have this awesome HTC one mini but stupid none expandable memory. I have not put but about five gigs in my phone, but with these two folders showing twice my phone is counting it twice. Basically I ha e no free space on my phone. Only half is actually there. WTF do I do?

No, they're not using the space twice.
/storage/emulated/legacy/ is a pointer to /storage/emulated/0/
Anything in /storage/emulated/legacy also shows up in /storage/emulated/0 but they are the same file.
If you delete something in /0/ it will also be deleted in /legacy/ which means it's gone. Same thing happens if you delete anything from /legacy/.
It's not counting twice, you are. If you try to free space by deleting one of these, you will lose files you need. Look elsewhere for ways to free up space.
Double files for sure.

I used the script SuperWipe_M4_xpirt.zip to completely clean my Phone because after I copied to my pc then deleted all my titanium back up media and DCIM my sdcard only had 1.4gb in on it. On the device all those files still showed under my legacy and /0 folder and I found a third under storage in the device. This is something funky. So after the SuperWipre Script from thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2423576 I then flashed 4.3 sense 5.5 from thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2575766 and now I have 11 gb on my phone. I will pay more attention to my storage when installing and changing things so I can see what, where, and/or how that happened. I have never encountered something like this before, nevertheless, i have never settle for a phone without external storage either. I wont ever do that again. But for a free phone plus a $56 credit to my account, I can't complain too much. Just a little. The One Mini is way better than the crappy lame POS LG Nitro HD .
I deleted /storage because the only thing inside it was "emulated" which appeared to be a random file, as opposed to a folder with a 0 inside of it. Expectedly, it seems, I lost everything. (Even though it was inside /mnt/sdcard/ with all my other files, i.e. /mnt/sdcard/DCIM, /mnt/sdcard/Music, /mnt/sdcard/storage, etc, so I didn't think it could somehow lead back to my files). Am I totally screwed and everything is gone or is there a way to like recreate the links to the files or something? Not sure if this made things worse too, but I've already restarted the phone somehow hoping it would recreate the directory structure or something.
Anyone know how to fix this issue.
Build Number: LMY47X.G928PVPU2AOI6
Model Number: SM-G928P
/storage/emulated/0
/storage/emulated/legacy
They both contain the same files and are linked together. So if I erase something from one it is erased on the other. That's fine I understand they have the same files.
The issue is my phone is counting the space being used twice. Say I have 14 gb's of free space. Then I download a 2 gb file and I go from 14 gb to 10 gb free.
I also noticed that these 2 paths are linked and have the same files /storage/sdcard0 and /sdcard.
Now I've discovered that all 5 of these paths have the same files I have a Galaxy S6 so I only have internal memory.
/storage/emulated/0
/storage/emulated/legacy
/storage/sdcard0
/storage/sdcard
/mnt/sdcard
Please help it's bad enough I only have 25 gb of space to begin with. Having 12.5 is even worse.

Dammit this thread screwing with everyone. Every path is like the way to get to a file in your sd card. The two paths are like different sets of directions, but both lead to the same place.
I know they are different paths but why the double space

I know they are different paths but why are they taking up twice the space? My S4 had the same paths but it didn't count the files twice towards used storage.
/storage/emulated = 7 gb
/storage/emulated/0 = 3.5 gb
/storage/emulated/Legacy =3.5 gb
Shouldn't /storage/emulated = only say 3.5 gb?
