[Q] Completely new to rooting - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello guys! I am completely new to rooting and I am concerned, cause I keep finding guides, but from experience I should always look for something new, and as in updates comes frequently and might mess up old methods of doing stuff. So to start off I'll give you the info of mine.
I got a Samsung Galaxy S ll
Android version: 4.0.4
Baseband version: l9100XXLQ6 (I've seen I need this for kernel...something)
I really want to know what Flashing, Odin and that kind of stuff, what they are! And the reason I am asking, is because I've found a few guides but it's never the same as being explained to, haha.
Is there anyone who can help me? I don't mind reading, as long as its informative and can help me towards getting Cyanogenmod10.
By the way, what are my options for getting the original Jelly bean 4.1 Android software on my phone, when it is relased when my phone is rooted? I'd like to stay "original" but for now I really want to try rooting and experience it!

Well, First of all Excuse my English
I prepared this INDEX of guides, because there are many guides, many duplicated threads about the same tutorials, etc.
This can became confussing for some users.
Sooo in here i'll try to put them in order. I better say first, that i tried to included the updated guides. The ones from a year ago or older where not included, unless i found them relevant or still usefull
Please if i missed a guide/tutorial fell free to PM me.

that thread is a sticky thread. You can't just miss it

Use the 4th one down in that root guide list(by Rachmat3).Root the phone then flash a kernel like siyah so you won't succumb to the brick bug.
Then post back about changing rom.

Model Number; GT-l9100 but it said "Canadian/Australian SGS2" in the guide that was posted, so I am not sure, haha
Okay thank you very much! Will there also be this "Superuser" acceptance pop-up when a application wants to access some superuser files? Or whatever files they were I don't remember where I've read it, but it was quite neat!

No. You can still root but in order to stay safe,
1. After Rooting, you must not wipe anything in recovery
or
2. Just flash a custom Kernel immediately (which will even give you better performance and battery backup than the stock kernel). this is the safest way if you actually want to root your phone

But I don't really know how to wipe anything from recovery (I suppose its the recovery mode we're talking about).
What does flash mean.. I interpret it as install a custom kernel. What is battery backup, there is nothing to backup about the battery, is there? lol
And if it's the safest way of rooting I am definitely chosing that one till I know more about this! How do I install Cyanogenmod 10 after this?

1. Yeah, i was talking about recovery mode.
2. Flash/flashing means installing a firmware/ROM, it's similar burning on discs. You can flash kernels, modems, ROMs, firmwares and many other things.
3. Battery backup is how long your phone can be used without charger connected
4. Since you will be installing CM10, it will be better and safer, if you flash a custom kernel.
Please answer these questions:
1. Do you know how to use Odin?
2. Do you know how to use CWM recovery?

Nope! I've seen a few guides where they use Odin, but I always want to be completely sure before I do anything (It's annoying, but its better than ending up having a bricked device) And nope, I don't know how to use CWM recovery, unfortunately! But everything has a beginning!
But if that's your best advice I will follow that!

Ok. Don't worry let's get started.
Let's use recovery method.
First, you need ROOT access. When you are through with ROOTING, let me know.
Root your phone with this method: forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1501719
It's the same method previously suggested.

And a Recommended method is downgrade to 4.0.3. Cuz doing this will make you safe from emmc bug aka super brick bug.
You can still root in 4.0.4 but after rooting and flashing kernels.. A single wrong step can take your phone's life..

Read post #4 of that thread. It has a WORKING link to the "[04/Jan][ROOTING/UNROOTING] DooMLoRD's Easy Rooting Toolkit [v4.0](zergRush Exploit)

If you can't understand this and think it's not helpful, I would suggest you not root your phone. No offense.

I'm not a noob but there is so much info and it's sometimes difficult to read the correct things because of the language.

You could have flashed a custom ROM withOUT rooting. Indeed, there are several custom ROMs that come already rooted.
EDIT: Sorry, ignore the above sentence. I'm mistaken. You need root. My bad.
Sorry, but in my opinion, you went backwards on this. You rooted for the sake of rooting, then wondered "what can I do now that I have root?", instead of rooting because you needed to do something that required root. But I digress, and I'll get off my soapbox now.
That said, several apps that require root that I like are DroidWall (control what apps can access the internet via 3g and/or wifi), SixAxis Controller (use a ps3 controller on your phone - great for emulators), AdAway (ad blocker), Chainfire 3D (for Tegra only compatible games), Root Explorer (essential for tweaking files in system folders), Startup manager (control what apps are allowed to start when the phone boots), Titanium Backup (backup/restore applications and their data, freeze apps), and SetCPU (undervolt/overclock/change governors/etc).
First of all i rooted for the apps that need rooting like titanium and some other apps.
Second, indeed for flashing because i always thought it was essential. (saw your edit)
Third, i read some things about security issues (dataleaks fe.)and thought i had to root to solve them.
Maybe i'm totally wrong but as i said before there is so much info that its hard to pick the right things out of the topics.
Thanx for your help. Learning more everyday

Flashing roms two methods ODIN or CWM and now MOBILE ODIN .
If you want to flash a custom rom you read that roms install instructions no more and no less .
Most but not all custom roms are flashed via CWM
CWM requires root and CWM install .
Root + CWM .

OK getting further and further every minute
Now know that with the actual root i can't flash.
Do i need to unroot this root before Root CWM?
So i read this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399 and took Odin.
Now wondering wich CF Root to take.
My kernelversion says: [email protected]#2
Wich kernel i need to take:
this one: CF-Root-SGS2_XW_XEF_KJ2-v4.4-CWM4.zip
or this one: CF-Root-SGS2_XW_XEF_KJ2-v5.0-CWM5.zip
Or am i reading it wrong?
KJ2 might as well take v5 CWM

And what about the unroot part? Do i need to unroot first and then CF-root?

Thanks, unfortunately this method will increase the flash counter, is there a way to avoid that ?, meaning just tweaking the existing ROM configuration without flashing anything on it, I think I've read that's possible with the Galaxy Nexus and Note International
... Next time try posting a quesion like this in general witha q on it. Once we have the q and a section it will be easier. Anyway, right now its impossible except for the one root that stars with system, but that root does not last forever.

By flashing a kernel like siyah v6 b5+ via odin.
Thanks for the answers!
Now first of all, ExynosAbuse would be perfect but does that support 4.1.2?
Also what comes to sidyah, does that support phones that are sim-locked? If so, how can i get rid of the operator sim-lock and is this risky?
And for the last: if i root my phone, can i get official updates in the future from samsung? Cause i don't wanna mess with the style that i got in my jelly bean quite like it, just want to get superuser-access.
So the app that i'm searching for is one click root that supports updates in future for 4.1.2. Is it impossible?
Thanks!
I'm with theunderling here.
I've always flashed via Odin woithout any problems and it very quick too. If you do everything right, it shouldn't take more than a minute, dead serious. 1 minute. Okay maybe more, but maximum 2 according to me
Just download tar or md5 file. Open Odin. Put the file in PDA. Then start. (and make sure Re-Partition is NOT checked)
(Im not going to give you step by step instructions cause that is for you to find out But i've actually helped you out alot
Good luck, and post for further question. Just dont forget to search before.
*EDIT* Yea, siyah is one of the best kernels, and dont worry everythin should be the same. You can get siyah kernel from gokhanmoral.com

Hi guys! I'm a noob, and I have some questions

Hi guys!
First of all, I'm sorry if my english sounds wierd, not my main language.
I'm not here to ask witch rom or kernel are the best, just some help.
Recently I got an S2 - GT-I9100 with stock 4.1.2 room. I'm loving this phone, and I kinda like the samsung's rom even tough it consumes a lot of battery. I'm kinda curious about CyanogenMod and using moded kernels, but, I'm kinda afraid of messing up everything and brick my phone. Checked if I had the eemc firmware insane chip and I got it, so it makes me even more insecure of trying out new stuff.
Now for the questions:
I have this phone locked to a carrier, can I still flash it?
Can I flash it even if I have the eemc bug without any problems?
Can you guys recomend a really good newbie guide with each and every step to flash and install a new kernel? (I've looked around this website and the internet, but, those that I find kinda' dont explain everything in an easy way)
I've instaled clockworkmod on my phone, but it says it dosent suport it. why not?
Can I have a custom kernel with sammy's stock room?
thanks in advance.
1) Yes, you can flash custom firmware if your phone is carrier locked
2) Yes, you can flash your phone despite having a chip susceptible to the EMMC bug, which only affects phones running rooted stock 4.0.4 firmware
3) Do not attempt to flash anything to your phone until those guides make sense. Right now they look like they 'don't explain things in an easy way' because you obviously don't know a lot about Android, and in particular this phone. If you take the time to read/learn, the guides very quickly will become easy to understand & you'll know what you're doing. Flashing without knowing what you're doing leads to busted phones & dented wallets.
4) Without knowing exactly what you flashed, I have no idea. If you want to root your phone, there is a thread stickied near the top of Q&A that has all the info you need. It honestly doesn't get any simpler than that thread. If you don't find it easy to understand, as I said above, don't do anything to your phone until you do.
5) Yes, you can run a custom kernel with a stock rom

Well thanks for replying!
Yes, its better not to flash it before I fully understand what I'm doing. Would you recommend some guides that I can read, from your personal experience?
And I instaled cwm from google play. -____-"

If you flash Philz kernal for your software build its a safe kernal from the brick bug. If you download the zip file it will not only put the safe kernal on but also root it. Link below
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1877270
What exactly is the EMMC bug?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
If you're running rooted 4.0.4 stock & you do a factory reset, there's a fair chance you'll brick your phone. For the technical version, Google/XDA search is your friend.

Hi once more!
Can I ask you for some more help? I read the post about philz kernel, understood what I have to do and I want to thank you about trying to help me. I'm sorry to bother you once more, since I prefer to be certain.
Got the GT-I9100
I got stock 4.1.2
Baseband is I9100BULS1
Kernel version is 3.0.31-88955 [email protected] #3 SMP PREEMPT KST 2013
Compilation Number is JZO54K.I9100XWLSD
So I guess the one that I need to download and install is:
<< 17.04.2013 - PhilZ-cwm6 v4.93.6 with CWM 6.0.3.1 based recovery >>
XWLSD (bootloop fixed)
http://www.mediafire.com/file/4cb3mf...3.6-signed.zip
http://www.mediafire.com/file/q642zb...4.93.6.tar.md5
Also I got SuperSU already installed, this means I have to unistall it and do this or can I install this kernel anyway?

No worries, Im happy to help.
If you already have superuser just download the "tar" file and flash it with odin as thats just the kernal.
Your build is LSD, download that one. which is philz 5.06.1
Your LSD build is quite old, have a look on samfilmware for your region as im sure you should get atleast LSW. Theres also LSZ and MS1 builds out.
Sorry here is the one you need
http://www.mediafire.com/download/q642zb02je6l1bb/PhilZ-cwm6-XWLSD-OXX-4.93.6.tar.md5
Sorry for being such a pain in the ass.
Well tbh, this phone is second hand, and the guy that sold it to me, had a custom rom on it but I asked him to flash it back to stock at the time. it came with stock 2.4 or something, but I updated it trough kies to 4.1.2. I looked around samfilmware and I only saw the build I have right now. I dont think I can update it
So I only need to get odin3, put the cellphone in dm, flash the new tar and thats it?

Hi once more, and thanks for everything! Well, I managed to lose my fear of trying it and managed to flash it using the instructions from philz tread. Everything went all right!
I live in portugal, and my carrier is vodafone, I think that the build I have is the most updated one.
Really, thanks for helping me with this!

But the EMMC bug doesn't affect any S II phones with JB roms does it?
Correct (4.0.4 being ICS). Even if you have a susceptible chip, the firmware has to have the bug which causes the chip to be scrambled/corrupted, which means anything before 4.0.4 or anything after (or anything custom for that matter) poses no problems.

I'm at work right now, so I can only do it after work. So I just need to, follow the instructions on the NEAT ROM post to flash it? They dont say how to backup your things tough but I searched in this forum and found how to do it-. So I only need to use the cwm to back it up. Does it back up EFS folder too?
You have been so far a really helpful dude, thanks mate! Was kinda afraid of posting something here, but turns out there is really nice people around here!
Btw if the mods want I can just PM you for some help instead of posting here.

[Q] .:New Method to root Andoid:.

Hello,
I am currently using the Samsung Galaxy SIII GT-I9300. Bought this device last April. At that time I was completely new to rooting device. I didn't know what to do. I searched online about rooting device, read many post by users in various blogs and threads here in XDA. Then I was very curious to root my device. But even then, though i knew what rooting was and its merits and demerits, i had no idea how to root my device. So I started searching again for an easy and fast way to root my device. Then I came me across the framaroot thread here and thanks to the developer of Framaroot, I was able to root my android safely without any problems. It was a very useful app for beginners who had no idea about rooting.
After few months, I received a firmware update. I had no idea what changes it would bring about in my device. In a hope to find out the new features, I updated the firmware. But sadly, there wasn't any noticeable change. So once again I seeked the help of framaroot to root my device. I was left with an error message and didn't know what to do. Again by searching on Google, I came to know about the OTA update about which I had no idea prior to the firmware update. I realized that the OTA update was a curse to Android rooting and I was left with my boring stock rom without anything. Today again I searched all over the Internet for a very safe and easy method to root my device but couldn't find anything like the framaroot. So here I am kindly requesting, the deveopers to kindly update the already existing methodsor make a new easy method to root android devices so that people new to android can experiment and enjoy root features. Sorry for the long story, thought it might be useful by explaining everything in detail. Hope I have not violated any of the XDA rules. If I did, I apologise for that too but please don't remove this thread. It would be very nice if anyone can find a solution as there are many people in the same situation as I am right now.
Thanking XDA and all the developers for there services.

Thanks for the post. Nevers seen this before. I will surely try it out. I have heard about odin before but was not confident to use it as I thought it may brick my device. Is there any root apps like Framaroot that can help make the process a lot faster and easier without the use of a computer.

1- Its the fastest and most reliable method I femilliar with- just follow the vid orders step by step (according to your device model), and no harm
should be made (unless you plug out your device in the middle of the process, or using a different model type- but even those can be resolved).
2- No apps that I know. Although i would not recommend it even if I found one- just seems too riksy than using the computer...
Basically all the OP questions are answered in the faqs and guides .
Root is constantly updated as and when possible but its not a simple question of just making a new one . Read the relevant root threads .

If it was only that easy on S3 would save a lot of trouble ..yep follow instructions in thread and use PhilZ .tar.md5 not the zip file and if you are flashing CM 11 you do not need to root the rom is already rooted.

Without giving you a long explanation you flash custom roms in recovery (.zip files) and stock roms (.tar) in odin and same for recoveries.

Something is tempting me to try it out. Lol. If it works, i will report it here and it will help other s3 users too. At the same time, something prevents me from doing it. I get a feeling of bricking my device. Then I will have to fix that too
Before I do something like that, can u predict if it may work since the same method worked for the N7000 or can u tell me if have you tried it before? (Please tell me if I am annoying u, it doesn't matter )
