Hey guys,
I am soon going to enter the rooted world of android and flashing roms on my note. Is there still a reason to remove bloatware from the phone when running a custom rom? Will the bloatware apps still be running or will they merely just be taking up memory in the storage?

The answer largely depends on which rom you choose..
Most custom roms are relatively bloat free, unless you are wanting to use a rooted stock variant build ...
And with regard to running bloat, the answer is yes ...
Apps like Google maps, navigation apps etc. Will often run in the background as available services, even when closed.
But you can use titanium backup and other similar apps, to "freeze " these applications....g
Edit : I always remove my bloat .....even from stock builds ....by freezing a suspected app for testing....
Then if all is well and stable ....I dump it ....g
Takes up space
possibly running in the background
things you may never use anyway
can add as you want after the custom rom
They fixed the battery drain issue with Google maps...don't worry about any Google services.

I'm posting on behalf of my brother who isnt used to forums, he has had his galaxy ace since release and as far as i know it is fully stock not even rooted. Unfortunately its incredibly slow and has been for quite a while, before he goes and buys a new phone i wanted to check here for a possible solution.
Thanks in advance

This is what happens if you don't use a custom ROM .

Slow with opening apps? Or slow user interface? It shouldn't be slow unless he has tonnes of apps.

Do not make him buy a new phone, this phone can be hella snappy actually!
Start by rooting your phone, you can easily find a tutorial just by searching the forum or via google.
My personal preference:
ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1263292
Tweak: V6 SuperCharger Update 9 Beta 6.2.2 (tutorial here)
When installing the tweak, chose option 7 (agressive for 512HP)
APPS: Autostart (find it in market)), preventing useless apps to start, but you must have chose the apps manually.
Auto Memory Manager(find it in market), chose agressive and save the changes.
If he is new at these sort of stuff it could take some time to get it right but it's totally worth spending a day fixing it, he'll get a fast a snappy phone in long term.
Has he tried using the task manager to clear memory? It sounds like he downloaded an application that doesn't behave the way it should (memory/cpu hog). If clearing memory helps he has to find and uninstall the misbehaving app(s), i think there's an app called watchdog or something which monitors memory and cpu usage of all installed apps.
If that doesn't help, go i'd go for a reset. And before buying a new phone, give the custom roms a go because they do tend to increase performance quite a bit!
Thankyou for the quick replies everyone very helpful, he gets force closes on twitter and facebook all the time and also it just randomly shuts down aswell.

Factory reset needed. And you could help him get a custom kernel.

hi! regarding the suggested tweak? is there a detailed summary on how to use and instal this type of tweak? ive been reading the post and it seems it only has the overview.. thanks!
my advice is just forget all those mumbo jumbo tweak script. its already incorporated in cfroot kernel. its also doesnt make sense. all it does is doing the same thing. tweak vm dirty, tweak minfree, tweak stagefright and so on with the only difference is the fancy mancy name to make it looks yummy. people just install 2-3 script with different name when all it does is the same, and u actually already done it when using cfroot.
You might also want to avoid CM because it's unstable, just flash a stable custom rom that's still in active development. Make sure to get the latest cfroot kernel version.

They have, but UK operators are notoriously slow with pushing their own, branded versions. Especially on a midrange phone like the Ace. Avoid CM, especially Grif's as that has quite a few bugs. Some bugs in Cyanoace but not as many from my experience.
For starters, root your phone (or get a custom rom with integrated custom root), than download Titanium Backup from Market, and then uninstall all the unnecessary apps, also, delete app and internet cache. That all should make your phone better than new
I would agree about using cfroot.
Root phone with cfroot, titaniumbackup pro backup to sdcard, factory reset, download mode and flash latest stock rom from sammobile.com, root again and then restore apps only, only restore app+data for games.

VZW always sticks us with all this bloatware and everyone hates it. I don't even want to see it there. Especially the VZW Navigation, Backup Assistant, and Media Manager.
But, I got started thinking. Besides just looking annoying, how much does their simple presence really matter? What is gained by removing them besides I just don't have to look at them?
These "unused" apps sometimes run in the background and take up precious ram which may in turn slow the phone down. For people who are neat freaks (like me), I like to clean out any useless apps because they are unnecessary and take up room on my phones screens and memory.
I currently have my OG Incredible and will be moving onto the RZ so ram may not be as much of an issue to you guys, however, why have something on your phone which you don't use and could potentially slow your phone down? Not me
Does anyone have a list of what apps are safe to remove?

There is a list of apps which you can safely freeze using Titanium Backup over in the DEV forums:

We are still eMMC write locked so unless that app only freezes stuff, it won't help. Removing the APK doesn't do anything because it doesn't actually get removed.
after you have rooted OTA .211, time to de bloat right? well,
if you use rom toolbox to de bloat your roms, some apps wont uninstall. root explorer may solve this. a list of apps that wont uninstall are:
amazon kindle
netflix
nfl mobile
latitude
local
v cast tones
video surf
vz navigator
if anyone has any other ways to get them out of there then post it up.
Use Titanium Backup Pro?

that works to permanently get the bloat out of the rom?

I had no problem uninstalling or disabling them either. Netflix is gone too. The OP probably didn't uninstall any updates first.

OK. I know a lot of people are complaining about the bloat that can't be disabled by ICS, and some are due to bloat apps being updated in the market.
Also if you are unsure if what you take away just use a debloat program which will freeze or uninstall app until you decide.
If anyone knows, please list which apps are safe to freeze with TB.

There is also a custom rom called The Arctic ISC based off .211 that is just mainly a debloated ROM.
I just got it running this morning and my phone has never been so responsive. I'm very pleased.
Quote from the ROM thread on DroidRazr forums:
"The base of The Arctic ICS is the 6.16.211 stock rom by Hashcode. We have made it Deodexed, Zipaligned , Debloated, and removed so much bloat that this thing could float on water! Most of the MotoBlur apps have been replaces with smaller, more efficient Android Open Source Project apps such as but not limited to Gallery, Clock, Calendar, Calculator, Email, Messaging, Browser, and a modified Blur Camera by EmericanX that works with AOSP Gallery! We also have tons of juicy tweaks to make the best of your phone. Battery savers when you don't need it, performance increase when you do! Our Rom currently has the high scoring benchmarks of any other ICS Rom, including CM9! "
Bloat
Might want to check preinstall directory and remove programs from there or else they will reappear even if you delete them...

So use it to remove the bloat then create a new rom with the cleaned image? I dunno.....I dont install bloated roms to begin with and it always worked well to clean up a stock rom.

Ive also debloated a stock Rom just fine. Its just some of these other custom ones out there have added features or speed tweaks to help things run smoother. This is the current on I loaded today.
http://www.droidrzr.com/index.php/topic/2832-rom-eclipse-razr-ics-v10-62112/
So I'm relatively new to android in general, and I've always assumed that the stock apps on a manufacturer ROM are just something that are there and you can't do anything about it (They don't normally have an uninstall option from the launcer)
I was playing around with ROM Toolbox and I stumbled across the uninstall apps feature (Which I had previously not used because I figured it was redundant) and discovered, by uninstalling Peep, that it can actually uninstall the stock apps included with my rom.
Is this a bad practice in general or is it something that people do all the time? I don't really want to break things so I'm not going to touch any of the more central services or anything but say I want to uninstall the stock gallery and replace it with a Jellybean one from the market. It won't break everything, right?
People do it all the time.
Just be sure not to delete anything that you think might affect the ROM.
You can also use it to move any app to your SD card.
I love ROM toolbox.

+1. One of the many perks of rooting... Removing bloatware!!!
Thank you much for this thread. And thank you XDA for the implementing the similar thread recommendation feature. Its a win for everyone.
You can also do this with Titanium Backup
Hey xda,i'm on Omega latest build and syah kernel. My problem is the lags and delays I have on the UI.It's smooth but I'm having lags and delays. What would be the problem ? I have big delays when starting system apps like Contacts,Mesaging etc. I have only few apps installed and all bloatware uninstalled.
you don't have a problem, it's a known issues of samsung's roms.
try to install 3rd party apps like ex dialer - super quick.
So you're telling me that this 700$ high-end phone, has a issue like this?will this continue if I flash cm/aosp/aokp rom?

Running foxhound 2.2 here, this ROM is rapid.
When flashing any ROM, do not do an advanced restore and refrain if you can from not performing a full wipe.
If all else fails then perform a mega wipe and re install your apps from the play store rather than titanium.
Test the ROM prior to this and choose a decent kernel. If its perfect when nothing is installed then you know that its an app or apps causing the issue.
