Help with firmware update - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I have an alert OTA that new firmware is available but when I try to install it tells me there is a problem. My phone is rooted, is this why? I can't take it in to get looked at unless I roll off the root and reset counter which is a lot of work. Should I just wait for Jelly Bean image coming out and install the whole image. This iswhat they are talking about with "firmware" right - Jell Bean, Ice Scream Sandwich etc. I was going to download the latest ICS image from my carrier and install it but the version listed and the one on my phone is the same....a little confused. I am on US Cellular by the way. Couldnt see a forum section for it so I posted here...sort of a general question anyway...thanks.

If your rooted. Then you either update through Kies or download the firmware from sammobile and flash it through Odin.

I had the same problem, you have to install new firmware via Kies on your laptop

Install Kies on your PC. Open it after installation and connect your phone to your pc via usb. Kies will automaticaly check if there is an update if there is it will download and install it even if your phone is rooted. After the upgrade you will loose root so you will have to reroot your phone.....If there is an upgrade for your phone you need it otherwise you wont be able to get Jelly Bean officialy.
This is the easiest way plus you get the official upgrade

[Q] galaxy s2 wont update

Hi i bought a new samsung galaxy s2 the other day and immediately checked for updates ota. it said an update was available, so i downloaded it and clicked install. the phone rebooted and began updating but once it got to 14 percent it stopped, rebooted then said update was unsuccessful. So i connected to kies and it told me my phone wasnt compatible for updates via kies. any ideas?
Kies is useless, if you really want to update you can use odin yourself... up to you and voids warranty
Try uninstalling and reinstalling but too be honest, forget kies...
hmm. ok. any ideas on why the ota update stops at 14 percent? im on stock 2.3.4 and not rooted.
yes, because kies is rubbish....
settings - about phone - update... Over The Air update is probably not available lol ...
With odin you can flash stock updates... really simple, but get used to the phone and if you want to take the leap, its not difficult but do plenty of reading, it can a bit daunting initially...
Is there anything wrong with your phone or just hungry for the latest version?
OTA is not in use/working for many yet but is supposed to be working when ICS is released .

i9100 stock roms in the stock rom thread al you need is to match modem and csc to location and network .
Rooting has nothing to do with updates or making the phone faster .

You said you're in the US? Then there isn't a stock ROM for the i9100 for your region. I'm in the US too. You should be able to use any from Intratech's official firmware thread just fine. I flashed from XWKE7 for the UK (2.3.3), that came with the phone, to XXKI3 for Poland (2.3.5). Haven't found a need to upgrade beyond that yet, but there are newer versions available.

OTA and Kies won't work for us dude, I hate to be the bearer of bad news. We'll have to rely on ICS being posted somewhere here.

Kies UGH *Facepalm*

Hello everyone, as most of you know, today, March 10th, the official ICS was released on SGS2. I was previosly on CheckROM HD v6, i flashed a stock Firmware(KH3 1 file thru Odin), connected to Kies and i get the stupid error, your device does not support software update via Kies. Question is, why doesnt it still allow me to update even though im not on a custom ROM? Which firmware do i have to be on. in order to update to ICS??
Are you sure You expect official ICS to show up on KIES today..?
The latest is.. No dates for ICS yet..
Regarding your current ROM.. you haven't flashed the right one.. KIES will only recognize the official ROM for your region... As per it came installed when you got the phone
kies sucks, i have never got any service out of it other than drivers, didnt support my samsung tab nor my s2 on stock rom, they just say its not supported, downgraded to kies 1.5 or 2.something and it just says you need to update your kies lol,
i hear it looks for updates based in your region so its best to wait till theres a recovery version or one extracted from kies.

ICS hasn't been released yet
I recommend you flash a 3 file ROM, to be as stock as possible, such as XXKI3
Who needs KIES? If you already flash with ODIN/CWM, having ICS in an ODIN flashable form is a matter of hours after the KIES version is released

Are you stupid? or just plain retarded?
On every single ICS related thread, you will find that, that announcement was cancelled.....I hate it, when people don't read.

Thank you for the breakdown. The way i saw it was, KIES will be the fastest way to get ICS, even before the file gets uploaded to XDA, thats why i went with it. Checked the Official Firmware thread, didnt see anything except the BETA 4.0 and tried KIES which didnt work. So its been moved back to the original date, March 15th? 15->10->15

We don't know the exact date yet... It's still better to go with ODIN. Kies is a piece of goddamn crap. Seriously.

How fast will it be ready to be downloaded on XDA of the moment its released? Approx a few days?

Less. Usually, Sammobile gets the hold of files as soon as they are released on KIES or even before.
My guess is ICS will be a staggered release by region.
so unless you're lucky enough to be in the 1st region xda will have it before you get it via kies.

[Q] Error with Kies/stock questions?

So I had a rooted SGS2 using the odin flash, and everything went well. Now, I want ice cream sandwich, but kies won't let me. Is it because I am rooted?
When I plug in my phone, I get "Your device does not support software upgrading via Kies" (Bell i1900)
So I "flashed stock firmware" (atleast I think I did, I don't have a yellow triangle anymore, but I still have a superuser app, and a CWM app). And I am still getting that error.
A couple questions.
1. How do I get rid of the error?
2. How do I know if I am completely on stock firmware?
3. Is it maybe because ICS is not out for bell?
Thanks
^^bumping^^

You do not have a phone with matching codes to upgrades .
So I "flashed stock firmware" (atleast I think I did, I don't have a yellow triangle anymore, but I still have a superuser app, and a CWM app). And I am still getting that error.
A couple questions.
1. How do I get rid of the error?
You restore your original saved firmware or you Google CHECKFUS and download firmware .
2. How do I know if I am completely on stock firmware?
No branding probably .
And no provider firmware .
3. Is it maybe because ICS is not out for bell?
Have Bell said its out if not then they have not released it as its not a worldwide rollout .

If you have this error it's mean that your combination of ROM, kernel and Csc doesn't support by Kies. You may try to change you region. Maybe it's help you.

I have a stock unrooted SGS2 that I got new from sprint 2 weeks ago and get the upgrade error with KIES. Would be nice to be able to get rid of the error.

how do i do that? is it with the *272 kiem# or something, because it won't work for me

A couple of questions.

got my s3 yesterday and I thought I would try to upgrade officially rather than root straight away. tried kies first but wouldn't work and then I thought I would try the update through the phone but my phone doesn't have that in the about device bit.
so my questions are is there something wrong with my phone? and should I just use odin and flash the latest stock firmware? or which is the best custom firmware that keeps all the stock functions?
my apologies of this has all been covered before.
thanks
First we need to know what firmware have your phone preinstalled.
Type *#1234# in dialer.

Your phone should be able to receive OTA updates, Kies is for most users a pain in the xxx. Best way to update is to flash the updated rom through Odin (see item 2 and 3 in my signature). For custom roms see the developers thread, there are many good rom`s with all the stock features. My preference is what you see in my banner. First read up about rooting, flashing, CWM and stuff to avoid problems
Well, since you are asking in XDA, YES don't wait for OTA or Kies. Use odin to flash original firmware.
Root it as fast as you can
Try every custom roms until you found the one you like the most.
Happy flashing

I appreciate all your answers. I'm not new to to flashing as my last phone was an S2 running wajk miui, just curious as to whether there was something wrong with my phone as it doesn't have the update in about device.
didn't want to root straight away as I'm not convinced I want to keep this phone yet, not impressed with it as I thought I'd be.

You say Kies does not work ???
No update well that begs the question is their an update for your phone .
No OTA in settings About Phone System Update that suggestions that the vendor has removed OTA updates .If so firmware updates are via Kies when the vendor decides to push them out .

[Q] Factory Unlocked S2 and official jelly bean update

Hello to everyone. Sorry if the post does not go here.
I have a factory unlocked Galaxy S2 and wanted to know if there is a way to update it with the official jelly bean update, since the roll out started for some countries i thought maybe i could do the update too. My country didn't recieve the update yet, and when i search for updates, it obviously says theres none. But wanted to know if theres a method, that does not involve rooting or something like that.
Thanks in advanced
Just flash some other countries rom
I.e Spain
Yeah i heard that, but i wanted to know if there was a way to updating it without flashing some rom. Because i cant understand why i can update since my phone is unlocked. I even tried to search for updates without a sim but with no luck.

No.
If you want JB now then you will need to flash Spains or some other countries stock rom via ODIN or flash a custom rom via cwm recovery.

It's about the firmware, not about network status (locked - unlock).
Judging by your nick you are from Argentina-Uruguay. You'll get the update in march.

Just flash it via Odin / mobile odin so you can show off running JB while your friends run gingerbread or ICS (or iOS, they always look away going like "argh...I got nothing to show against that spaceship", luv it )
