hi all, I'm considering getting the Motorola Droid Razr M. I currently have a Samsung Droid Charge (rooted, but still stuck on GB). My main reason for getting the Razr is for better battery life and a smaller device. My Charge drains at 5% per hour on 4G in idle mode (1% per hour on WiFi in idle mode). Thus, I need Juice Defender just to make it from morning to night.
Curious to see how easy root/unroot is, and what the benefits are (aside from removing bloatware)? I've been somewhat spoiled with my Charge, as the phone is unbrickable. Is the Razr just as user-friendly?
thanks!
I had the Charge as well, and while I prefer Odin and the Charge in terms of flashing kernels, ROMs, radios, etc., the RAZR is just as easy.
The RAZR has locked boot loaders. The release of kexec should allow better development but it's gonna take a few months. You should wait and get the RAZR HD or Maxx HD. Those two will give you better battery than the RAZR M and they have better displays. Same as the GS3 I believe, Super Amoled HD.

Pretty much what he said... but the razr m seems like a better fit if you want all around smaller.. we have booting kexec roms with everything working but camera due to ril... lol.. im sure your familiar hearing that coming from the charge.. im personally gonna pick up the maxx hd on battery life alone...

thanks for the responses y'all.... I'm not a developer, so I'm new to the "kexec" terminology. I did some google searching, and from what I gathered (briefly), is that kexec is needed to install custom kernels (hence the K part)?
I don't mind waiting for development to develop for the Razr, as it looks like the M has some "smartaction" features that help with battery conservation.
just getting sick and tired of my charge dropping down to 85% after just 2 hours (even though I'm running JD).
Be aware that likely most development will happy with the developer edition of the M. deves have chimed in on that pretty loudly. at least on the twitters.
Did anyone notice this?
In countries outside the U.S., the device will ship with an unlockable bootloader where operators allow.

It will be tough to resist, that HD Maxx.
Hopefully the ergonomics are better than current maxx. The current maxx, even with same screen size as my Charge, just feels clumsy in comparison.
Odd considering it is thinner than the Samsung.

I will belive it when I see it.
If the bootloader is unlocked in the EU version I might get a HD MAXX.
Ofcourse, I will wait until it is confirmed. I will never trust motorola's word again.

Wow, is this a fun, beautiful phone.
Curious to who I know around here. Any x2/bionic peeps around? Curious to all of your thoughts on this phone and if any of you here are cheesecaking.
I must admit, I think I like this better than the Nex. Additionally, Moto made some very nice improvements to their interface (*blur*) on a lot of different levels.
Anyways, just saying hello to all of you. Let's keep this forum alive.
Cheers.

Hey 'Wolfe. Glad to see you here. I made the jump from the x2 (wife needed a working phone & I needed a new toy) the day this came out. So far, it's been a great experience & I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it. Glad you're on board.

I don't use hotspots so I haven't experienced this, but I do know I don't lose apps after a reboot
So far mobile connection seems far superior, as does performance. Also, huge fan of the screen, although I do get kind of a greenish tint at times where I feel it should be white - market hang screen for example.

It is great mobile. Am coming from nexus s after i broker the glass :'(.. So o designed to take this mobile over samsung s2
I really like it except the the larg body
BUT i noticed the wifi range is weak!! And there is no video calls option
Rather than that every thing is great

you can use viber or Skype for video call

I'm sorry I didn't quite understand the trade-off bit...apologies...but when I saw it once, I was looking for a faaaaar brighter screen, considering the fact that its a sAMOLED...but I found it a little dark...but was told in some forum its because of some ambient setting...will make sure to check it next time properly...
But am surely buying it for sure...in a while... Congrats on your phone BTW.

Hope to see you here soon, this really has been an impressive improvement on Motorola's part. As far as the screen goes there's an additional option to allow the os to manage auto brightness to conserve battery. Net effect: it's about 25% dimmer at times than just "normal" auto brightness.
Sent from my DROID RAZR using xda premium
I believe the dimmer look is attributed to the AMOLED screen. What I was saying as far as a "trade-off" is that I'll take a slightly dimmer screen to get a less pentile effect. This screen looks much nicer than the Bionic in my opinion...
I just "upgraded " from the nexus to the razr and I am absolutely loving it. The nexus' radio was awful. This phone is just so much more solid overall.

Got this phone a week back! Totally loving it. My old Xperia X8 was almost driving me nuts! Already rooted and safestrapped!
So how's your RAZR experience?
So because my old razr wouldn't update I was sent a replacement
So for a few days I'll have a GB and ICS razr so if anyone would like any side by side tests ran let me know.

Any way you could do a battery test?
I would be very interested in such a test. It seems that battery life might be shorter on ics and that would be a deal breaker for me, as the only reason I got my razr maxx is battery. If I have a better understanding of the differences between ics and gb I might choose to stay with gb

I would be most interested in side by side call quality tests, both incoming and outgoing. If you only have one SIM, a way to do this would be to record yourself speaking to voicemail reading the same paragraph with each phone, and then listening to the readings with a high quality landline.
I would also like to see a comparison of signal strength (max distance to tower before dropout), as well as wifi range.
Thirdly, a comparison of music playback through a high end audio system would prove excellent.
All of these tests are almost never seen in phone reviews (except briefly in passing sometimes), and yet they are arguably the most fundamental, and most important qualities of any phone.
Just my 3 cents...
Hi has anyone had a problem with the screen on there RAZR where in a dark black room and you watch a video for example and you get to a black screen there are black spots all over the display and screen leakage on top of where the capacitive buttons are.
I have had two razrs because of this in a week I can't stand it and I just called verizon today and they said that there is nothing wrong with the phone like they don't believe me but I don't think they went into a dark room to really test this issue.
Just want to see if anybody has had this issue and what can be done to possibly show verizon proof that I am not lying about the screen on the phones they have given me.
Thanks

Thanks for the response it is appreciated but for the newbie stuff I am not a newbie to xda and searched what I could but as I am on a phone with no computer available the search function sucks and I didn't find one answer so again thanks for your help this issues annoys me it might not be big to others but for me it is I came from a sensation never had this issue I have also had a evo 4g, a desire, a Samsung intercept no such issue and screen quality is a big deal for me I just needed an answer

That being said, I accepted it and it does not bother me one bit.

I have noticed it on my Maxx too, but I have only ever seen it while playing one particular game when the screen is really dark. Other than that, you can't see it at all, so it doesn't bother me.

It's a minor issue and imo not worth making a big fuss over. Overall the razr is a very high quality device. Great hardware, and software (although updates can be slow to push) we will be receiving JB.

To me it is unacceptable I got a new phone worth a defect would you buy a laptop with screen issues I wouldn't so this isn't good to me at all.
So I went into Verizon told them about my issue talked to someone on the phone found out I was in my 14 days still and Gabe it back can't have this problem but one good thing came from it I now game a RAZR M and it is beautiful without the screen issue also thanks for everybody helping and enjoy your RAZR it is a good phone but not for me with the screen issue on two different new phones.
By the easy RAZR M is a great step up in my opinion same size screen better quality screen though (even though technically it is the same) and fast.
Sent from my XT907 using xda app-developers app
You will probably have the same.issues with the RAZR M. It's not a defect per say, it's just something that happens with this type of screen, which the RAZR M also uses.

I don't think the M or the HD's will have this issue. They are using different screens.
I really am surprised Motorola released the RAZR with this issue.

would he razr hd get the same battery life though?
I mean it has a newer processor which helps with power consumption
so would that make the 2 about the same if you figure that in?
and just to make sure everyone's on the same page....
im talking about the droid razr maxx and NOT the max hd
The maxx's battery is much larger. A better processor will give some additional life, but not as much as a bigger battery. I simply no longer pay attention to my battery with my maxx.

Same here, I hardly ever look at the battery, I have a Maxx xt910. I am currently on ICS because my phone is a Asia.03 (that I somehow got stuck on EU firmware...anyone know how to revert PM me lol)
It all depends on whether you want to upgrade past JB or not. The Razr Maxx is going to get JB by the end of the first quarter, but that's it. No other updates after JB. The Razr HD may get Key Lime Pie because it's newer but it's not guaranteed. Also, the Maxx doesn't have NFC capabilities so that means no Android Beam. I don't know if the HD has it or not.
Sent from my DROID RAZR using xda premium
Well is price a major factor? I think the Razr Maxx is relatively cheap or free on contract, whereas the HD is $200.
Im just getting a poll. I might start developing roms for this again. Just post in the comments if i should.

Yep! My daily phone since my Droid Inc 4G broke. Don't think I'm getting another HTC phone but that's beside the point. I'm using the Jelly Bean ALPHA CM 10 rom. It's extremely buggy. Usable, but extremely buggy.
Motorola Droid X2
Just got one for my wife on straight talk , running eclipse v 2.3
Just got 2 of them from my parents.
Upgraded the wife and myself from our OG Dinc's
Unfortunately it seems the Incredibles were better phones.
Even after rooting, running Eclipse, debloating and running V6 Supercharger.....these are the laggiest pieces of crap ever...
My wife says if she ever needed to call 911 she'd get on her computer.....go to the verizon website.....deactivate the DX2....re-activate the Dinc and make the 911 call on that....it'd be faster than trying to dial on the DX2....
But hey - the larger screen is nice....
Dan
better idea..
Or, instead of developing for this phone your self you could teach me how to develop ROM's for android and I could do it myself!
I have newer devices for work, but I still use my dx2 as my personal phone.

My DX2 rocks. CM7 if very fast...only 2 real issues are wifi dropping out sometimes and dialer lagging when dialing out a bit... Still a solid phone.
Yes...do it for Tracfone Users
This phone is getting a lot of interest as an eligible BYOP alternative for Tracfone Android users. It would be great if someone could help folks like me find a decent, cheap phone that would work for this network.
Is the phone really as slow and doggy as some have mentioned?
Tracfone BYOP requires a non-LTE CDMA phone...users are looking for larger than 3.5 inch screen with more than single core 1Gb processor...any suggestions?
My X2 is still in use. Running Eclipse and working great.
That is exactly why I bought my dx2, except for straight talk byop. I've found eclipse to be the most stable and feature inclusive ROM so far, and am really enjoying this phone even if it doesn't have ics, jb, or kk. Especially like that it's on Verizon - best coverage hands down in my neck of the woods.

Where would be a good jumping off point for this phone? I have a friend who's stuck with it, and I've tried a few of the root guides but there's missing files, bad redirects, and just generally dated info. I just want to root it and probably put a slim rom, and by your review I'll probably go with Eclipse. I tried the zerg root but it threw an error that the phone was write protected. All help is greatly appreciated
